I have a 1914 Craftsman architecture house with a steep pitch roof, two chimneys, built in gutters, 4 Eaves, up on a bank bordering the forest. I also have a detattched stone garage ground level built into the hillside with a 4’ stone arch connected to a stone wall. Both structures There was nothing easy about this job including the delivery of roofing supplies and so I spent a lot of time interviewing roofing companies. I didn’t want a “shingle nailer”, I wanted craftsmen with expertise. I feel so lucky to have found A Cut Above Exteriors. Rodriego and Brahyam were those craftsmen; they are incredible workers. I am so impressed with their skill and their work ethic. They were respectful and they put in long days, in hot weather, with a lot of heavy product up and down the hillside and then ladders. At the end of each day, they also did a wonderful job of clean-up. Randy was an excellent Project Manager with actual roofing experience; something I found is not a given in the industry. He did a nice job of keeping his pulse on the operation. As is the norm with old houses, there were some surprises but he didn’t miss a beat. He was a great thought partner and I never had a worry. They may not be the cheapest but don’t be deceived; the hidden costs with less experienced roofers can be significant. I have already recommended this company to others without reservation.

It went very well. The company seemed really good, and the roofers that did the job were simply great-Rodrigo and Brian. Our roof was installed in April, and they did a fantastic job working with Oregon rain to make it no problem. Well done guys.

I had to have one side of my house re-sided due to heat/weather damage. Sam was my project manager. Nick and Antonin did fabulous work in 95+degree heat. The house looks great. A Cut Above is a great company and does very professional work. I had them do a re-roof for me a couple of years ago and they did such a good job that's why I called them again for the siding. I highly recommend them!

Peter (our sales & project management contact) was absolutely terrific throughout the entire process. This is even more impressive given the hoops he & A Cut Above had to jump through to comply with our lender for the FHA Rehab Loan that was requiring the work. We never heard a complaint, and Peter was great getting all the paperwork in alignment--no small feat and very important to us because without it, we wouldn't be able to buy our home. Once we finally got to the point of having the work done (delays by the seller, lender), work done by Rodrigo & crew was on time and at a high quality level. The work site was always clean and we had absolutely no issues throughout. Not once did we feel nickle & dimed, and it was refreshing to have contractors take the high road and put our satisfaction first--not charging extra for every little piece of plywood that was replaced, paining ALL the trim work when they likely only needed to do touch-ups, etc. 10/10, would hire again. And we likely will when we decide the garage roof also needs replaced.

Peter came out and gave us a bid - they weren't even in the ballpark of competitive on pricing, but I couldn't have had a better experience. The salesman was direct, honest, incredibly friendly, and recommended we go with the alternative before he even went through the official quote. He explained some of the reasons they were more expensive, including materials, workmanship, certification, warranty, etc...it was still 15k over the price of our lowest bid, and about 8-10k over the next closest. He gave extremely useful tips on what to look for during the competitors install and even offered for us to call him and his team with questions despite not having our business. Absolute pro.

It went great! Everyone was very professional and efficient. There were some long delays due to design choices with the windows and some back and forth with the permits, but everyone involved was super patient and helpful throughout the process. The actual install went much faster than I anticipated, especially the windows - which was great as the disruption to the interior of the house only lasted a day. Overall a very good experience.
Description of Work: I needed all the siding and two windows replaced on one side of my house - the existing vinyl siding was warping and splitting, letting in water. A Cut Above removed several stacked layers of old siding, replaced it with Hardiplank, painted it, and helped consult for and install new windows.

They did a repair on my property to fix a leak. It was improperly installed kick out flashing on my roof. They did not diagnose the problem correctly, so I am now stuck with a $4700 bill for the repairs. Another company came out and did an engineering report to find the problem. I presented this report to A Cut Above Exteriors and they refused to use their insurance resolve the issue. I would expect after sharing the report they would take care of it. The work was initially completed in June 2005. They came back out in October 2007 and said it was a drainage problem with the gutters which I had repaired. However this did not fix the problem and the new owner of the home called me to pick up the bill for the actual repairs of deconstructing the building, installing new boards, new siding and fixing kick out flashing and window flashing.

Overall they did quality work. They were a bit rough on our landscaping even though we had it trimmed back to their requirements. However, the weather was not good during the installation and they went above and beyond with our home repairs. We were impressed with the quality paint work they did too. We appreciated Peter B. the site manager. He was very personable and friendly, keeping us informed and answering all our questions.

I made an appointment to get an estimate on replacing a roof and windows in my rental home I am considering selling. They were two weeks out, as all others seemed to be, on being available to give me an estimate. It is busy season which I understand. A couple days before the appointment they cancelled stating I am not the market they are targeting. This now puts me 2 weeks back on getting another estimate. I am hoping to get the work done this summer and now I am delayed two weeks so I can get another estimate to compare to what I have received. I am not a home owner that goes with the cheapest bid, even if I do decide to sell, but apparently that is what A Cut Above felt in stating I am not their target client??

Response from A Cut Above Exteriors
Hello, thank you for the feedback. I would like to personally apologize for the experience you had. While real estate situations are not our general field of work, this was mishandled considering you were the still homeowner (many cases we get the potential buyer calling, who we legally cannot enter contracts with until they own), and you were not even dead-set on selling at the time. The wasted two weeks is a serious matter and is not something we take lightly. The person who responded in this way is no longer with our company, and we will do our best to ensure that no one else calling in has this experience going forward.

I hired them to reside a 1500 sq ft house. They were not the low bidder or the high bidder. I picked them because they have good reviews here and other places, and had credible replies to all of my questions. It appears to me that the work they delivered is superior to what the higher bidder was promising, so cheaper AND better. The original promise was that it would take about 2 weeks. Two of the nicest guys you can imagine showed up at 8 am the start date. A truck parked a bunch of siding, a porta-pottie and a dumpster. They started work immediately. Within 2 days, the siding was off and some vapor barrier sheeting was up. There was a windstorm. Not one leak or issue with the open parts of my house. It was that well protected. They were done in 5 days, not the 2 weeks. Every step of the way, any questions got immediate clear answers. Very polite, very respectful, very friendly. At the end, they cleaned up everything, and had the dumpster, the porta-potty and mess gone by the next day's lunch. Day 4 had a mishap and damage to my electrical power panel. I got an electrician out there who diagnosed the issue and said it would need a new panel. I expected a bunch of blowback, hemming and hawing, based on experience with a previous contractor. Instead, Cut Above's foreman spoke with the electrician directly. The electrician showed him the damage, said why he felt it was a safety issue, and he agreed to cover the cost of a new panel. Yes, you can argue that it was his duty and not noteworthy. But how many times will a contractor just do what is right instead of what saves a few dollars? To me, their response bought as much respect as the rest of the job did. There is still a matter of paint that will need to be applied when the weather clears. But I did not want to wait any longer to encourage Angie's readers to give Cut Above a call if you need siding. Their work was top quality, the materials are top quality, their people were nice, their product was superior to the highest bidder and when a problem showed up, they took care of us without a second thought.

My wife and I chose A Cut Above after getting several quotes for replacing the siding on 3 of the 4 sides of our house. Our initial concerns with all the vendors were: A. Will the work done be of high quality? B. Will we be "nickeled and dimed" by extra costs? C. Will they disappear in the middle of the project? D. Will the people they employ be people we would be happy to have around? E. Will they be responsive to our questions and concerns? A Cut Above was absolutely superb in all categories: A. Quality of work: The quality was excellent and they give a lifetime guarantee, which means that it is in their own interest to do a good job. B. Extra charges. Not only were there no extra charges but they did a lot of extra small jobs at no charge. They never argued about the need for these items. Even those that were not related to the initial contract. They did charge for some extra work but the charges were extremely reasonable. This was the greatest surprise - and the most pleasant. Although the initial quote from them was not the lowest, by the time the job was finished, I believe the actual price paid was lower than if we had used anyone else. C. Disappear: They did not stop until the job was completed. They never disappeared. D. People: The people they use are excellent and we, at all times, felt very comfortable with them. They were all polite, considerate and friendly. E. Responsive. They allocated a project manager who was always responsive to our texts and calls. We received responses within an hour and often immediately. There was a real concern with our satisfaction, from the salesman to the project manager to the management of the company and to all concerned. They could not have done anything better. Overall, we could not be happier with A Cut Above and we strongly recommend them with absolutely no reservations whatsoever. They are a class company, providing a class product using class people.

I used A cut above for replacing my roof and siding on a 100+ year old house. I felt like I was being told the whole picture on how the project will pan out and cost. A cut above was able to match my 100 year old siding with a modern hardy plank version very closely. They were able to blend problem areas on my house effectively and aesthetically. Peter my project manager was very helpful and always a phone call away when I had questions or concerns. Armand and Edward did a great job getting this project complete, and were very nice to work with. The roof looks great and the siding is beautiful. Over all I am very happy I used a cut above to complete this project.

This was the first big project my wife and I did when we bought our home and it took us some time to get over how much more expensive the quote from A-cut-above was than some of the others - Marvin, Home Depot, Pella. A-Cut-above were very patient and polite through the months it took us to make a decision. They did tell us that their product was of better quality than the others but we assumed that was the sales pitch. The installation went smoothly and everything was done very professionally - the scheduling was clean, installation in the dead of winter was painless, and their follow-up was good (attending to minor adjustments). Since then we have replaced some more windows and a sliding door and I am able to clearly compare the quality of the work and the quality of the product to what we used the second time. A few things stand out - 1. A-Cut-above did a terrific job with the install. To this day - 5+ years on - every time I use the windows and the door it is a pleasure to feel how smooth the operation is. 2. The Andersen product is very good. We have seen it weather 6 winters and the windows and door have done beautifully well. The second time around we went with a Marvin sliding door. In hindsight I would definitely change my decision and use the door from A-cut-above - the Andersen door. The difference in quality is stark. I do not believe it is just the Marvin doors. The ones similar to the Marvin felt the same way as the Marvin at their showrooms. I am fully sold on the value proposition from A-cut-above. Their prices are higher but feeling the satisfaction of a smoothly snapping/operating door after 5 years is so worth it. When it comes to windows the difference in quality is less stark. The Marvin windows we got installed through a contractor function as smoothly as the ones from A-Cut-Above. The biggest difference is the Andersen screen - way better than the alternatives. Their product wins out on that count. The windows we replaced in the second round of remodel were facing the back of the house and we did not need the Tru-Screen level of quality. Hence it was not such an important factor for us. Overall, 5+ years after the work was done I am still delighted with the quality of the work A-Cut-Above did and also the quality of their product.

Delayed due to rain but the workers were terrific, hard-working, committed to doing everything well. Jeremy, the sales rep, provided great info and suggestions, such as increasing attic venting and replacing an attic fan that had a hole in it. We had several other bids, this was in the mid to high range of all the bids, but the materials, warranty, and professionalism was worth it. Supervision by the general manager was great, the employees who did the actual job worked non-stop and always pleasant. All details, including a porta-potty and protection under the dumpster for the driveway were taken care of properly. When there was a slight glitch (crack in the ceiling) they sent a drywall firm out to fix it promptly, even that went well. Still pending is a slight dent in Leafguard gutters, but A Cut Above Exteriors has already contacted the gutter company to handle that. All in all, very professional, well-run company, and the roof looks great.

From initial presentation bid to final execution detail, Cut Above Exteriors did a fine job. They really do have great systems in place for delivering on their promises. We are so happy with our siding, windows, and roof. Our house is a place to be proud of now. We are very happy we went with a company that we had confidence could deal expertly with the potential unexpected problems. that a budget 1970's house might have. Cut Above had the experience to deal with everything in the best way. We felt confident that in every aspect care was taken. When we did have concerns or requests the team: Bill McDermott and Peter Bretz listened and gave us the best options. We feel now and in the long run we spent less money having expert people with great products on our home than struggling through mistakes or compromises with other initially lower expensive bids. Also, since we were having several projects done: roof, windows, siding, structural problems, we wanted one company that could deal with it all, so the coordination and communication was seamless. The managers made sure the quality stayed accountable to their standards. As in all bid presentations, one wonders about over promises, but the company came through with every promise of quality and customer service. In addition, the workers tried really hard to clean up daily. Everything was left very tidy. We had great communication along the way. Peter Bretz, our project manager, was a really nice person to work with. This is a great company with people that intend to live up to the company's name--A Cut Above!

A cut above was very good about coming out to look at our project. Getting them to provide an estimate is another story. After 2 weeks without an estimate i contacted them and was told "the job was closed by the salesperson" with no reason as to why. They said they would look into it and get back to me asap. Another 2 weeks have gone by and nothing from them. If its this hard to get a quote from a cut above i don't want to know how hard it would be to get them to do the work they agree to. **updated 1/8/15** A cut above contacted us and explained what happened. They were up front with where they made a mistakes and did not try to blame anyone else. They told told us that there was going to be a meeting setup for the multiple homes in the neighborhood that needed work done and that it never was put together, But they also said that it was not a excuse for not giving us a bid and they were sorry that they didn't follow up the way they should have. After the way A cut above has handled the situation i would now give them another chance on future projects.

We are sorry we did not provide you a bid on your home. We were told by your neighborhood lawsuit construction consultant that they were arranging a neighborhood meeting for us to meet with several homeowners interested in bids on their homes. We waited to bid your home because we would be able to provide you with a group discount, but unfortunately the consultant never arranged the meeting or let us know that it was not happening. Had we known this was going to occur we would have provided you a bid after our initial meeting.

When contacted by this company, I was told that the minimum amount of siding that they would replace was a complete wall. I only needed three panels replaced. Nowhere in their ad did they mention a minimum. Even the person that I spoke with, commented that they needed to change their ad to reflect that they require a minimum amount of work before they will accept a job. They agreed to refund my money.

When we bought our house in the spring of 2014, we knew it needed a fair amount of work, including the roof. There are a lot of trees around where we live, and both the roof on the house, and especially the roof on an outbuilding on our property, were in pretty rough shape. Although one company told us we could get another 10 years or so out of them, no one else we talked with, including our contractor and the home inspector, agreed. We wanted metal because we understood it to be the longest-lasting and most environmentally friendly option overall, so I contacted three different roofing companies for estimates. Of the three, A Cut Above came in the highest, but it was pretty clear right away why that was. For one, Josh, who handled the estimate and sales end of the transaction, came out to meet me right on time, and spent nearly an hour walking around the property and explaining the finer points of metal roofing, and our particular roofs. We didn't have keys at that point, so he came back the following week after we closed the sale and spent a bunch more time looking at both roofs from inside the attics. He took pains to explain exactly how A Cut Above approached a metal roofing job, focusing on what they *did* do rather than what other companies *didn't* do, which I appreciated. He was also the only person who had anything to say about ventilation, which I learned in this process is a critical part of having a long-lasting roof and avoiding problems with mold, etc. (the outbuilding had NO ventilation for the roof and attic, so this was added). Our contractor, whose focus was exclusively the interior of our house but who has decades of experience with various companies all over Portland, told us he'd heard nothing but positive things about A Cut Above's work. Although it was expensive, we felt confident we were making the right choice, and hired them to do the job. Overall, they did fantastic work. There was a slight delay getting started, but it was clear from the get-go that the weather had an impact on their schedule, and they started only about a week after their initial target date, which didn't matter to us. Rob, the project manager, kept me well informed of the timing for everything, and continued to check in throughout the entire project, both via email and text, and also stopping by in person. They also took pains to coordinate with our contractor to ensure there wouldn't be any issues with, for example, having a dumpster in the driveway for the old roofing material, or other things where there might be overlapping work happening. This is key -- WE did not have to coordinate these things; they took care of it and kept us informed the whole time. The old roofs on both the house and outbuilding came off in one day, which our contractor said was the quickest he'd ever seen. They did repairs where necessary to the ship lap on our house roof and plywood on the outbuilding roof, and the metal was delivered right on time. During the the walkaround for the estimate, Josh had also noticed some rotten boards in the soffit, and as part of the ventilation work, arranged for repairs to the soffit on three of the four sides of the house. I heard later that finding the right material for this part of the job took a while, since the house was built in 1962 and this style of board is no longer in wide use, but they we able to match it exactly. Installing a metal roof takes time -- in all, they were going for about three weeks getting both buildings completed. I should mention too that we had hard rains a few times in between the removal of the old roof and complete installation of the new roof, but both buildings were always protected with waterproof material, and we never had any problems with leaking. The team arrived every day between 7 and 7:30, and worked with one short lunch break until at least 5, but most often until 6 or 7 in the evening, never stopping. They were always friendly and extremely courteous. It was damned impressive to watch, and obvious that a great deal of care was taken to install every panel perfectly, to cut openings for all the vent stacks, and ensure that things were properly sealed. In all, we are very happy with the job A Cut Above did for us -- in addition to being rock solid, the roofs look fantastic, and we've met many of our new neighbors because they've come by to comment on it and ask questions. While it is true we've had these roofs for a relatively short time, everyone we've dealt with at A Cut Above has insisted that they stand behind their work and will be out immediately to fix any problems in the unlikely event something goes wrong. Given our experience thus far, we have every reason to believe them. We would recommend A Cut Above to anyone looking for roof work, and will surely hire them for future work on the exterior of our home.
Description of Work: We needed to have the roofs replaced on our house (built in 1962) and an outbuilding on the property (built around 1995). We decided to go with metal roofs, and found A Cut Above on Angie's List. They installed metal roofs for us on both buildings and made repairs to the underlying materials. They also added ventilation on both buildings and did soffit repair on our house.

It went extremely well. The men who did the siding work were highly skilled and very pleasant to work with. The subcontractors who did the gutters and siding were also well skilled and efficient. There were a couple of very small issues we informed the project manager about and he was very responsive. Excellent customer service all the way!
Description of Work: Replaced all exterior siding and gutters then repainted the entire exterior.

I've hired A Cut Above for several jobs over the past few years. Yes, they are expensive, but I would still hire them again for my next big job that requires long-term support. Here is why: - Sales process: Josh Robertson is a completely down-to-earth, problem-solving guy who knows the industry. He has literally spent hours with me to help me brainstorm and plan my projects, and to do what he can to work with me on price. The time he has spent on brainstorming alone is above and beyond. I felt like I was talking to a good friend who cared about my house. I trust him. - Delivery: I have had two project managers oversee my different projects. Rob Colson and Peter Bretz have been nothing but professional and dedicated. On my projects, they have kept me informed of the plan, adjustments needed, things that didn't go as planned, and how they were going to fix them. Yes, there were problems, especially with my siding job. I have had a few subcontractors through them who I was unhappy with. But, A Cut Above was 100% responsive to my feedback. I have never had to make a stink about the problems that occurred, because these PMs took the initiative to put a mitigation plan in place before I had a chance to get upset. I can honestly say that I feel that Peter and Rob have gone above and beyond to ensure I was happy with the quality of work they provided. They also were cool enough to take photos of unrelated problems on my house that there is no way I would have been able to spot on my own, while they were up on the ladders, enabling me to take advantage of chimney warranties and other types of repairs that other providers were responsible for. They have followed up on my jobs even while they were on vacation. Above and beyond. - Customer Service: On some of the earlier projects, small things failed over time (gutter leaks, etc) and they have always immediately resolved the problems without giving me a hard time. You can save money by hiring independents on smaller jobs that don't need the long-term support. But I feel that the extra money is totally worth it on roof, siding, painting, and other things that you may need followup on years later - A Cut Above will much more likely still be in operation, as opposed to the independent who might have retired to Arizona within a few years. I only wish the price was a bit less. They really are not cheap, but I don't hesitate to recommend them and I would definitely hire them again if I had to do any of it over again.
Description of Work: 2011 - Replaced siding on garage, painted siding, doors, trim, repaired flat roof and gutters 2014 - Complete house roof tear-off, attic flooring, skylight, partial siding replacement, repainting entire house.
