I take my 15 year old car there to keep it limping along. I appreciate them fixing as little as possible as compared with the dealership.
Even though I was a new client, they were able to get me in the same day that I called. That was very helpful. They did the work right then and the cost seemed reasonable.

I took my car into Clay's because of all the positive reviews on Angies List. If I had also checked Yelp reviews I might have just kept on looking. The people are courteous and professional as far as I can tell, however the prices are outrageous. I was needing a repair of a leaking radiator. I had got under the car and looked for myself and could see the leak was from either the radiator close to the lower radiator hose or from the radiator hose itself. Every time the car was parked there would be a puddle under the car on the left side(driver side). So the first thing they did was charge me $70.00 to check to see if the cooling system was leaking. I guess the puddle of coolant wasn't enough to convince them. Next, 2 radiator hoses were almost $80.00, I mean really. Then there were 2 mysterious charges... "supply fee" $30.00 note that this was not a parts charge, but as listed. Then the charge of "other fees" $3.00. Anyway, the work seems to be fine, I just feel like I was taken advantage of on prices and will not be going back.

I dropped my car off at Clay's and got a ride home from their great courtesy shuttle. Clay checked my engine and AC for the loud noise and tightened my drive belts and get me a full oil service. Then Beth came and picked me up with the courtesy shuttle. They did a great job as usual and they never try to do more work than is needed! I also got a AAA discount and now the noise is gone and my car is running great! I have always gone to Clay's and would never use anyone else. I love the great customer service and great car repairs!! Thanks Clay's Auto!

Transmission was overfilled which resulted in oil being sent out of vent tube. However they took truck back in and checked everything out and corrected issue. Everything else was completed with no issues and quality has appeared to been very good. No issues. Truck was used in 1500 mile trip two weeks after work was performed and performed well.

I went in because the tires were worn on the edges and had to be replaced, but I don't want to replace them until the underlying cause is dealt with. I drive a Town Car, and they (like the rest of the panther platform) have a tendency to eat ball joints. Given the wear pattern and the vehicle, I suspected that was the case, and that was what I wanted them to check. Took it in 0800 Thursday AM, got a call toward noon telling me the ball joints are fine, and that the idler and pitman arms were worn to the point of it being a safety issue, but the good news is it would be cheaper. I'll leave it to the reader to speculate on how many garages would have done both jobs, even if the ball joints didn't need replacing. At that time I also asked them to attend to the fluids and filters that had been a bit neglected as well, which they did. The car was there overnight, so early this afternoon I stopped by to check on it. I was told it would be finished later this afternoon, and that's exactly what happened. While I was there, I asked to see the work in progress, and it turned out Clay himself was working on it. He escorted me into the garage, lifted the car a little higher so I could see, and also showed me the parts he had removed. I wasn't checking up because I don't trust him, I just wanted to understand what was going on, and he was very nice about it. When I picked the car up this afternoon, I saw right away that they had even washed it too! That was a nice touch that I appreciate. To be perfectly candid, the price was not a bargain, but it was a fair price for fair work, and that's all we can expect, right? They do good work, run a solid business with people that know what they're doing, and that costs money. Beth, Dan, and Clay were all very professional and courteous, and it's nice to see a local family business that I can walk to from my home doing well, and I find it very rewarding to spend my money THERE. I would not hesitate to recommend Clays to my neighbors and friends.

Excellent service, always. I have used Clay's exclusively since I moved to Oregon in 2002. The first time I brought a long list of things that my brother (an out-of-state car mechanic) told me to have changed/fixed based on the mileage of a used car I bought. The list included new belts, oil and filter changes, spark plugs and wires, air filter, distributor cap, rotor, the list went on. He also gave me a price range based on his shop prices. I took the car and list to Clay's, and asked them to give me estimate before doing the work. When they called, they said that almost half the things on the list were not necessary. Mind you, they could easily have done and charged me for everything on the list and I would not have been any the wiser. Since then, I take my car in for regular work. Being a 1997 CRV, it does need attention from time to time. When the fuel gauge stopped working, they ordered the part. But when they actually removed and cleaned the original part, it worked, so they put in back in, and only charged me a minimum service fee. They also said if the gauge failed again within 3 months and did need the new part, they would not charge for labor again. The exact same thing happened with the motor for the rear windshield wiper. They fixed it rather than replacing it, again for a minor service charge. This is typical of their care and service, and I recommend them to anyone who will listen.

I dropped my 2003 Subaru off at Clay's Auto Service and Dan told me they would call me once they figured out what was wrong and how much it would cost. Then Clay drove me home. That is just one of the many great things Clay's does for their customers, they have a drop off/ pick up car. I received a call a few hours later telling me what was wrong and how long it would take to fix. Beth came back later that afternoon and picked me up from my home and brought me back to the garage. My car was all ready to go. I use Clay's Auto Service for all my car needs because they are so nice and my car runs GREAT! I have been using them for the last three years and have been totally happy every time. Thanks Clay and Beth!!

Engine noises are never a good thing. I brought my 16-year-old car in because of what sounded like a banging noise in my engine. I was prepared to say good-by to dear old car. But Clay was able to find the source of the problem and fix it. Clay's Auto Service has serviced my car and my wife's care several times. I trust them completely!

Clay's is wonderful. It's a little more expensive than the run of the mill place, but WELL worth the price. They are very responsive, the quality is great - I never doubt if they tell me something needs to be done that it *actually* needs to be done - very honest, and the customer service is outstanding!!!! I am so glad we found Clay's and we'll continue to use them! They even give complimentary rides to/from work or let you borrow a bike (and gear) if you aren't staying to wait for the job to be done. Also, the staff is very very friendly!

I made an appointment to have my truck reviewed to determine the repairs needed. I made an appointment for 8am on the 24th and had my truck towed to Clay's because the starter was not working. They did not start diagnostics on the truck until 4pm. I had to wait another business day for an estimate. The estimate on the phone was $1,500 plus a list of other items they recommended. (The truck is a high mileage older model) I called other auto service companies to get an idea of whether $1,500 sounded reasonable for the work they quoted. When I went in to talk to Dan he let me know that the $1,500 quote might not fix the starter problem. Additional diagnostics fees might be needed. He had only identified the first part of the work to be done, not diagnosed the complete scope of work to make the truck start. Dan's quote was very high per phone quotes from other service companies. His and quot;bookand quot; quote was 9 hours of labor + fixing anything else he had not diagnosed for the $106.00 Dan was professional but but not pleasant. His technician was the same. When questioned about his inspection of the transmission fluid and filter needing to be changed (it had been changed only 30 days earlier) he acted like he was put out and that I did not trust him. Dan's attitude was not helpful, it was defensive. He gave me the feeling that if I didn't like it I could take a hike, but in the very politest words. I was given the impression that he was sure I was stuck because my truck had been towed to his business. I paid him the $106 he charged for partly diagnosing the truck, paid $166.00 to have my truck towed to another auto servicer, and had the work done for $450. I saved a minimum of $670 and the other auto service company was pleasant and happy to have my business.

I needed to have my car towed because the alternator went out as I was driving home from work. I managed to get a ride home after leaving my car in a parking lot in Hillsboro. I checked Angie's List the next morning and found Clay's. The reception I received was well below Angie's List's level of satisfaction. The man answering the phone told me, after I explained my situation, that Clay's could get me in but they were way too busy to help today, but I could make an appointment for next week. Really?? Wow!! Then I asked if he , the same man, could refer me to another repair garage in the area. He said, and quot;I live in east Portland so I am not familiar with any in this areaand quot;. Really???? Wow!! I have worked in customer service for a number of years and this response will not promote good business. I did mention that I found Clay's through Angie's List and he, still the same man, commented that I should check Angie's for sure. Really??? Wow!! I am still frustrated by the lack of good customer service I received. Maybe they are so busy with return business that there is no room for new customers. There should always be room for new customers. Clay's may have good mechanics--I will never know--but as long as their customer service remains the same, I will never know.

Pam, who we talked to when I called suggested an inspection (cost @$70.) to go through all the major mechanical areas of the truck (Ford F150). Within 3 hours of dropping the truck off the shop called with their recommendations. Change the oil and replace the battery and battery terminals. They also recommended we get new tires sometime in the next month or so. We authorized the work and it was completed ahead of schedule and exactly at the price we were quoted (@$375 which included the inspection.) We were expecting more problems given the mileage and the price to have the work completed was reasonable. We asked them to provide us a quote on replacing the tires. (20" tires). They gave us 3 quotes with different types of tires depending on our usage... from just road tires to off-road tires. The prices included alignment and balancing (@$825 with the tires being $677.) This was less than we had paid 3 years ago for just the tires and the ones we selected were comparable. We decided to have them do the tires too. Throughout the entire process we were kept informed and given options. As a woman taking a pickup truck in for work everyone at Clay's is respectful and I know that I can trust them. This is the 2nd time I've taken this truck to Clay's and I wouldn't go anywhere else. They are fair, reasonable and friendly. They also have a nice customer waiting area that is clean and comfortable. I consider Clay's the gold standard in what an auto repair shop should be.
Description of Work: Inspected for potential issues as it is coming up on 100,000 miles and winter. We wanted to determine if it made sense to do repairs or sell it.

We described the problems, and they agreed to call with their findings. They determined that the brake rotors were slightly warped, but that there was no safety issue associated with it. To my pleasant surprise, they suggested waiting until the pads wore to the point of needing replacement, and then replacing the rotors then. In addition, they didn't charge us for the evaluation, just the cost of the oil change that we had at the same time. I am so used to my former mechanic giving me the hard sell, and overcharging me to boot. I will definitely be coming back to Clay'.

From the moment that I stopped in to schedule an appointment until that time I picked up my truck... the service exceeded my expectations. I met Beth, one of the owners, and she understood that I was new to them and cautious. Five minutes with her and I knew that I could trust this company. She was informative, kind, explained their policies ($65 to check the brakes and remove any stones or impairments) and if there was more that amount would go toward the repair. When I dropped the vehicle off they did not ask for a deposit and offered to take me home. They even have bicycles to loan if you want to bike home. They think of everything! Beth called me after they determined what was wrong with my brakes. With 100k on the miles we expected to have to replace the rotos. Our pleasant surprise is that their quote was WAY less then we thought it would be. We of course gave them them the ok to go ahead and they had our truck ready even before they promised. They could have told us we needed the back and front brakes and rotors and we wouldn't have been surprised. Instead they told us that the front had to be done but we could hold off on the back. This is a company that through their actions... and their kindness... I know that I can trust. What a blessing for a woman... Dealing with this stuff by myself. I highly recommend Clay's... and I highly trust them to do what's right.
Description of Work: I was having a problem with the brakes on my Ford F150 with near 100,000 miles. They test drove the truck, inspected the brakes and told me that the front brakes and rotors needed replaced as they were near a safety issue. The back however they said were fine and probably didn't need repaired yet. They quoted me a price and a completion time... the beat both. Awesome experience.
