Delivered 4 hours late, much of the sod was dry and cut crooked, 4 of the 10 pallets delivered that had 50 rolls of sod 25' long were dumped by the inexperienced skid steer operator off of the flatbed trailer and into the street. Took about 2 1/2 hours to restack the rolls on the pallet and move the 100' to the staging point in the driveway. There was a lot of dirt from the sod rolls left behind in the road because they were dry and did not bind. Needless to say the integrity and quality of this sod was greatly compromised. The two full size wine barrels were fine, however the four half barrels were cut in half extremely crooked and slanted, I did not complain about the poorly cut barrels. At the time of the delivery I called Westwind's and spoke with the owner Jari. I explained the situation to Jari and my concerns rather than send the shipment back, and after some tense discussion where he questioned the accuracy or truthfulness of what I was telling him, he begrudgingly and with some additional rude and unprofessional comments agreed to a 10% reduction in the invoice. I let him know I would make a note on the invoice indicating the 10% reduction, he questioned whether I had the money or if I would be able to pay the invoice, or if I provided a check whether it would be any good. Odd question considering the original invoice was payable by check to begin with. I told Jari I would email him photos of the situation I had described. Which I did. I paid the driver the amount indicated on the invoice less 10% as agreed to by Jari upon completion of the delivery. It's also worthy to note that to have the sod delivered the cost per square foot is nearly double than what it would be if you picked it up yourself, a very costly premium for the delivery service. The 4 pallets that were dumped equaled 2,000sqft of sod, a lot of sod was compromised, I'm not implying these 4 pallets were a total loss, but a significant amount of it was negatively impacted. We were laying the sod nearly as quickly as the driver was shuttling it into the driver, in fact the group there nearly had it all placed before the driver departed hours later. It is 3 weeks later, and the lawn looks great in the areas where the sod pieces were moist and intact, there are several areas where the sod that was damaged, dry and minus the dirt that remained in the road and on the flatbed trailer, where there are brown spots interwoven in the lush green areas. Given the nature of the discussion with Jari and after reading some online feedback comments on various sites, I anticipated there being an issue when I returned the sod pallets (the 6 pallets that were not broken up, the driver took 4 pallets that were broken up during the offload with him), I was correct. Sheila (the co-owner and wife of Jari), was extremely rude, called me dishonest and threatened to have her husband confront me on taking the discount. I told her I had no problem discussing the 10% discount that I had discussed with Jari during the incident. She got on the phone while I stood at the counter, with another unknown to me person also present, as she discussed "that guy" with her husband, who was in another building onsite, I'm guessing their home next door. He declined to come and discuss it with me and Sheila, angrily pulled the $60 pallet deposit I had paid from the drawer as she complained to me as to what a dishonest person I was. As she started to hand me the money she quickly snapped it back and said I needed to sign a logbook that indicated I received my deposit back. Afterwards she handed me my $60 deposit back while stating don't ever come back there if I need sod again. I thanked her and assured her that I would not be returning to Westwind's for any of their services or products. I will provide copies of the photographs from my delivery of sod, the poorly cut wine barrel planters, and the random dead grass throughout my lawn integrated with the healthy sod (Images of lawn is 3 weeks later, properly prepared, watered, and fertilized). Very pleasant while making the sale..... as a customer I find their integrity and professionalism way beneath par and unacceptable for any future business, which they lost a significant amount of future business I would have provided.
