J & G Outdoor Improvement

He gave a free estimate which wasn't written, but a verbal agreement with a handshake. He wrote up the estimate at home and didn't add in all of the items discussed. When I added them to the list the next day, he agreed to do them, but stated that they weren't a part of the original discussion when they were. He had agreed and specifically stated the day before that he had the equipment to do a rather tall job. I specially questioned him if he had the equipment knowing that portion of the job was difficult. He arrived with no ladder and asked to borrow a ladder of mine. I loaned him an 8 foot tall ladder. When he got to the tallest portion of the job (arbor vitaes on a 3 foot tall mound), he stated how difficult that portion of the job was going to be. I said I knew that, but that was what he had agreed to do the day before as a part of his estimate. When he stated that he was finished and I questioned him about not completing that portion of the job to the specification that he had stated the day of his estimate, he got a little irate...telling me that he wasn't going to kill himself to do that portion of the job...which he had given an estimate to and agreed to do. He then cried poor and that he had kids to feed and his truck was on empty. He said he couldn't run home to get the larger ladder that it would cost him too much. Told me to knock $200 of the price, but that he wasn't going to do that portion of the estimate. He also hadn't finished another tree and claimed that it wasn't a part of the estimate, but recanted his statement and admitted he was wrong when I pushed the issue. He also made claims about "this is why he doesn't work in Sylvania Twp too much". ...as he thought I was being difficult to ask him to fulfill what he had agreed to do. He stated that in this part of town we are too picky about the quality of work. He said we could pay more for this job if we wanted better quality. When I made the check out to his business name, he told me that he couldn't cash it that way, as he doesn't have a business account, but yet his original estimate included tax. FYI... He also asked to come in and use the bathroom and for a glass of ice water. Never had anyone do outdoor work for me who asked to come into the house to use the bathroom before or didn't bring their own water or ladder.
