The job went smoothly from quotation to installation. They knew the vendor's product line very well. The installers did a very professional job. These guys are at the top of my list for future jobs.
Description of Work: They replaced the entry door on my home. The new door has 2 side lights, aluminum cladding, and a screen door. They had to remove the old door and install the new door.

Project was expected to be completed in 5 working days. It took 3 months, countless doses of aleve and a sense of humor that should be in the hall of fame. (the running joke continues to be that i am being punked!) Even though they say they don't use subs, that is indeed what i got. After he was "almost finished" and guilted me into paying him early, all of the work that he did was horrid - even to the untrained eye - and had to be completely re-done. Carver & Sons did agree to cover the cost of the re-do after they saw the workmanship that had been delivered. Unfortunately, it was clearly not a priority for them as I had to chase all subsequent follow-ups which were met with some level of disdain (if there was any communication at all). They did technically complete the re-do (of the re-do) though many aspects of the finishing work still make me cringe with disappointment and discouragement against any future home improvements.
Description of Work: Re-do of 5X8' bath to include replacement of vanity, shower, toilet and all associated hardware. Installation of limestone tile on floor and tub surround. installation of glass tile on one wall. i supplied glass tile, vanity, shower and all hardware

Response from Jim Carver & Sons
I understand and agree with Member's initial frustration. The work that was initially done did not meet our company's standards. Furthermore, due to his conduct on this job, the crew leader is no longer working for Jim Carver & Sons. After work was complete, the designers went to inspect job and immediately agreed with homeowner and paid for the labor and material cost to have the job redone. Due to scheduling constraints and receiving the necessary products, we were not able to return to the job for almost 3 weeks. However, once we returned we re-did the project and also additional work that was not in contract to try to make the situation right with the homeowner.

Female came to give an estimate; very cold and reserved. Suggested that this company only does remodels > $50,000 and was displeased with my budget of $35,000...I live in a modest ranch. She made me uncomfortable in my own home! I was supposed to receive an email with a proposal, never did, no follow-up call either. If you don't want to spend big bucks, count these snobs out!

Response from Jim Carver & Sons
In regards to punctuality, I was approximately 10 minutes late; however, I called her prior to our appt. and told her I was running late from my last appointment and apologized and she said that would be fine. During our initial in-home consultation, the member began by telling me that after viewing my portfolio of work on our company’s website that she was not impressed with my skill as a designer. When the topic of budgets came up she stated she was comfortable with $20K but could possibly extend to $35k. After I began putting together the estimate the proposal was getting closer to $44k so I informed her via email (see below) that we were 50% over her initial budget and to please advise me to whether to continue with current designs or to redesign and scale back project to get closer to budgets. Lastly, I am unclear how the member gained the impression that our company only does projects over $50K when my average bath remodel is approximately $15,000.00. My communication and relationship with current and previous clients, including several Angie’s List members, is very positive and all other feedback reflects this. From: Hope Carver Sent: Tuesday, February 15, 2011 5:06 PM To: member Subject: bath designs Hi - I hope you are well and you're week is going well. I met briefly with Greg, our plumber and head of our labor dept, yesterday afternoon. While he was here, I showed him current layout and gave him an idea of what we spoke about as far as making master bath larger and into a full bathroom, extending into extra room and enlarging hall bath. He gave me an accurate ballpark and I ran preliminary numbers for material and we are coming in at a starting total of $44,000.00. Since we spoke briefly about budgets starting at $20K and going to $35k, I wanted to check in with you to see if your budget would allow the extra expense. If not, we may want to talk about how to scale back project to get closer to your initial budget. Please advise what direction to take before I proceed with designs/proposal. Regards- Hope

They were very professional and suggested ideas to improve the cabinet space for our small kitchen. I can say enough about the professionalism and responsiveness of the company. While we did go with a different company because of price differences I beleve Jim Carver would meet and exceed anyone's needs for remodeling work.

I originally got an estimate from Neil remodeling for our master bath, and their estimate was quite high - nearly $40,000. We decided that although they seemed extremely high quality, the job just didn't warrant that expenditure. I got the info about Carver & Sons off Angie's list, and was initially very pleased with them. They called back right away, were able to provide good advice over the phone, provided nice material options, and were respectful of our budget. The actual renovation went fine overall - the end result is very nice. I was, however, a bit frustrated by a few of the incidents during the work where things were not installed well. In each case, the issue was obvious, but it took me calling to complain to get it rectified. These included things like a floor tile installed not flush with others, faucets installed too close to the wall (wouldn't fully turn), plumbing installed with hot & cold reversed, etc. These things made me quite nervous and I would have felt more confident with them if they had pro-actively acknowledged the mistakes versus waiting for me to notice. In the end, I did get the result I wanted for about $27,000, so am therefore happy. The bathroom looks great and there have been no further issues.

The project went perfectly, we are completely satisfied with the results and extremely happy we did it. From the initial bid experience to the final touches on the doors, Jim Carver and Sons were nothing but professional an courteous. They were not the cheapest company and told us they would not be the cheapest when they gave the bid. However, they do not subcontract the work and their crews have been with the company for many years. The quality of the work made it evident that they take care of their people. We had four different bids, and Jim Carver and Sons was #3 in price (one was far more expensive). It came down to the #2 and #3 in price for us and the difference was about $800 or 10%. However, we more then made up this extra expense in our 2 hour + consultation with their designer who worked with us in choosing styles and colors to match our house. They used actual pictures of our house and showed us virtually what different styles and colors would look like. This process resulted in us choosing a completely different color then we thought we wanted (red instead of blue). If we had not had the opportunity for this consultation, We would now have a door we would be less then happy with. It took about a month to get our doors ordered and then just a few days to schedule the crew. The crew took about 2 days to get all 4 doors installed. When they were done, there was virtually no trace they had been there other then the beautiful new doors. We were very happy with the installation and will strongly consider Jim Carver and Sons for other projects on our house.
Description of Work: We had all of the exterior doors on our house replaced - a main entry door, a back door, a fire door between our garage and laundry room and an exterior door on our garage (not the main overhead door). We also got a quote to replace two large, adjacent windows with a sliding glass door - cutting out brick to do so though we did not have the service performed.

Our house is 22 years old and in bad need of a compete bathroom remodel. I contacted three contractors for bids and ended up selecting Jim Carver & Sons. Hope Carver was excellent in giving advice. She has a neat computer program that can be manipulated giving 3-D renderings of the bathroom in different configurations. JC&S has an excellent showroom with lots of displays and samples for not only bath but also kitchen remodeling. Because of Hope's professional, detail oriented approach to the project we decided to award JC&S the job. Their work crew was prompt and courteous. The crew of four completed the gutting and remodel work in a week. The counter top and shower walls and door took another couple weeks. The job was complete in four weeks from start to finish just as Hope had promised. We couldn't be happier with the results of the remodel and are planning to have JC&S remodel a second, smaller bathroom in our house. I highly recommend Jim Carver & Sons for bathroom remodeling jobs. It's obvious to me that they've been doing this kind of work for a long time and have it down to a science.
Description of Work: Jim Carver & Sons workmen totally gutted the bathroom down to the wall studs, removing the flooring, ceiling, soffets, existing cabinets, shower enclosure and toilet. They tore out a wall and removed a door. Then they built a shower using tile, added new cabinets, walls, a pocket door, new tile flooring, new walls, ceiling, exhaust fans, lighting and mirrors. A subcontractor installed the glass shower walls and shower door. Another sub added a granite counter top and sinks. JC&S completed the job with the plumbing, electrical and detail work.

Overall the experience was very positive. We worked with Hope Carver, who designed the new bathroom for us, working through several iterations as we made changes to meet our budget and our style needs. She helped us pick our tiles, fixtures, and cabinets to meet the style we had in mind. We had a tight deadline to get the work done and Carver delivered on-time as planned. The work took two weeks - it was very efficient and the crew took care to keep the rest of our house clean. The head guy, Greg, arrived early enough each day that we could consult with him on the latest progress, talk any issues that may have arisen, and give feedback on little things like where we wanted a light switch or an outlet. He was very friendly, helpful and accommodating. We've been living with the new bathroom for about a month now and really love it. One important thing to keep in mind - Carver does not do any painting so you'll need to hire your own painter (or do it yourself).
Description of Work: We hired Craver to do a complete remodel of our master bathroom. The house is 10 years old, so the master bath is a good size, with two vanities, a whirlpool tub and walk-in shower. We wanted to gut the room and start over, keeping most of the layout the same, but upgrading the quality of materials and upgrading the decor. The final project included all new tile throughout, a new whirlpool tub, two new vanities with granite counters and new fixtures, a heated tile floor, a new linen closet and an upgraded walk-in shower.

Hope worked with us to design the bathroom to meet our needs and our tastes, making suggestions, but not being pushy. When we had agreed on what we wanted, she gave us a written contract with the price, arranged a time for the work to be done and periodically checked to see how things were going. The workers showed up each day on time and worked steadily through the day. They picked up their materials and tools at the end of each day although the bathroom was not usable during the week they were working. They put down drop cloths to avoid tracking mud into the other parts of the house, but the entire house became coated with dust from the cutting and sanding of the drywall and wood. They were friendly and professional and did a good job. We are pleased with the result, although it was very expensive.
Description of Work: The old bathroom flooring was removed. The tub was pulled out. The shower stall glass was removed and the old tile discarded. A new wall was built between the tub and the shower stall and the shower bench was enlarged. The apron around the tub was enlarged and the tub was put back in place. The shower stall, the area around the tub, and the floor were all laid with ceramic tile. New plumbing was installed as needed and new faucets were installed in shower, tub, and sinks. Safety bars were installed in the shower stall and a new glass shower door was ordered and installed by Basco.

Asked for a quote on work remodel work for a home I am closing on in 20 days. Was told company does not operate that way. I must occupy the home first. (The remodeling loan requires I start process before closing.) I called back and asked if I offered to pay for their time to get a bid would they reconsider. I was told we do not operate that way and hung up on without even as much as a sorry, goodbye. Total call time was about 2 minutes so it wasn't pestering on my part that elicited this response. Ive only rated professionalism as I would assume all other aspects of business are fine.

Response from Jim Carver & Sons
Jim Carver & Sons provides free estimates to homeowners. This applies to anyone who has purchased or recently closed on a home. In this situation, the gentleman had not closed on the house and it would have been against our policy to provide the estimate. During our initial conversation we offered to provide the estimate once he had closed on the home. Although he offered to pay for the estimate it still would have gone against company policy. We strive to provide excellent customer service both in person and on the telephone and believe that our Angie's List rating speaks volumes about our professionalism.

The project went really well and was finished on schedule. Things went very smoothly. Dave did a great job explaining what to expect and coordinating schedule with the hardwood installer. He was excellent at returning calls and emails. The cherry cabinets were installed (and are beautiful) and ready for the flooring after 2 weeks. The granite came about 3 weeks after that, and they returned to do the slate backsplash and install appliances. Then, ready for paint (JCandS does not paint). The work crew was terrific.

Dave and Hope did a good job helping me pick tile, cabinets, etc. We picked some great tile that I am really happy with in the allowance of the original quote. The crew was punctual every day and worked quickly. Any project creates dust, but the guys did a good job cleaning up the work area and putting down tarps on the carpeted stairs to try to help. I do not know how it would have been better. The project was ready for grout sealing and painting after 7 weekdays (JCandS does not paint). After we used the shower a few days, we noticed we needed some more caulk along the edge of the shower door - and they came right out and fixed it.
Description of Work: Bathroom remodel - remove old tub & tile, tile floor, vanity and fluorescent light box. Install new vanity, mirror, lights, tile shower w/ glass door, and tile floor. No painting. JCandS installed faucets, mirrors, and lights - but these needed to be purchased elsewhere. The cost includes tile, shower doors, and vanity cabinet.

After scrimping and saving for several years, we finally got the kitchen remodel we've wanted. It was changed from a simple straight line design to one with an "L" shape, giving us a more cabinets and maybe 60% more counter space. Dave Carver used his computer modeling tool to help with the design. J.C.& Sons did everything from the floor to the cabinets to the counter tops. We felt it was best to let one firm handle it all so if anything went wrong there would be only one firm to deal with. Nothing went wrong, (believe me, I look hard). He kept the job within the budget we had set and had it completed in the desired time frame. Kudos to Brian and Gary, the ones assigned to the job, who were both craftsmen and artists because in a 57 year old house where straight floor, wall, and ceiling lines and angles are hard to find, they had to work a bit of magic. We would recommend J.C.& Sons to others.

Met with exterior window and door salesman, Steve Carver. He was prompt, professional and easy to talk to. He offered other suggestions in ways to reduce the costs of my project. When I had questions after the estimate, he was fairly prompt in returning my calls. When the door arrived and the date to install was set about 1 week later. The next day I was called to ask about moving up the install date because another project was moved. We went ahead with the earlier date and I was told the installation crew would be there between 8:30 and 9:30. The crew arrived late around 10:30am. They set to work after checking out where they would be working. I asked the crew leader if he would be willing to install a light and outlet in my exterior wall since he would already be cutting directly into the wall to install the door. He said that would be fine and I went to get the materials. When I returned from the hardware store with supplies, around noon (1 hour later), the crew was gone at lunch, but the exterior door had been removed. They returned to work at 1:00 or so to begin cutting a larger hole in my exterior wall. I expected this to be noisy and a bit messy, however it was a performance just short of asking my two buddies to come over and break down the wall. NO protection was put up between the rest of my house and the dust. The guys eventually went out to their truck and brought a sheet of vinyl siding insulation left over from a previous job to try and cover the opening a bit, but it was too little too late. Dust and pieces of cement covered my wood floors and the men walked all over the interior construction area with little respect to my house. It was very frustrating, I'm just glad my floors weren't recently refinished. At the end of Day 1, the crew said they would come back tomorrow to install the light and insulate the door. I called Steve at JC&S to ask about the additional cost for the light and electrical box. I wanted to discuss my concerns with the mess in the house too, however Steve had been out in the field all day and was quite hurried when I tried to talk with him. I did not get to discuss my concerns. Day 2, the crew arrived after 10am again. The work to install the light and outlet was quite a lengthy process, it appeared. By ~3pm, the wiring was installed and the door was ready to be molded around on the interior. But the crew didn't have appropriate mortar to fix the threshold and the light I'd selected from the hardware store had a broken piece. So both men in the crew left to go return the light and purchase mortar. Does it really take two grown men to do that? Finally by 7pm, the door was installed and mostly finished. The crew briefly ran a broom across the exterior deck and swept the first 3 feet on the interior of my house. Technically they cleaned up, but I had to mop 3 times to remove most of the dirt. 2 weeks later I was still finding grit in my house.
Description of Work: installed new 6' sliding Polaris patio door into location of exterior door with sidelight. JC&S had to remove old door, enlarge opening, frame opening and install new door. After the project was started, I asked the crew to also install an exterior light, outlet and switch for them. This should have been easy as the crew was already breaking through the wall to enlarge the opening.

Our experience with Jim Carver and Sons was exceptional. There are no words to describe the finished product. Hope Carver, the designer, was probably the best my wife and I have dealt with. She came to the house to take measurements and pictures. We went to see her a week later and look at her ideas. We spent over 3 hours with her picking everything out. She went out of her way to make sure my wife and I picked out everything the way we wanted and that everything matched. She made fantastic suggestions as to everything that was going to be installed into our dream bathroom. They removed the light bar, mirror, faucet, top, cabinet, toilet, baseboard vent, baseboard, linoleum, underlayment, light/vent unit, bulkhead, shower base, fiberglass unit, underlayment, shower base and accessories. What a mess we had. Then the transformation began, just like a caterpillar turning into a beautiful butterfly. New tile floor, tile shower, vanity with cultured marble vanity top, recessed medicine cabinet, vanity, bullnose tile as baseboards, new light above vanity, recessed light where old light/vent had been, new recessed light/vent above the shower, new light switches to match and all accessories we picked out. Hope also gave recommendations on where to go and pick out all of the accessories we needed. The work was started when promised on the 22nd and finished when promised, on the 26th. The 2 man crew were very professional. They kept us informed on a daily basis. Every day before they left, they made sure everything was cleaned up and ready for the next day. Hope stopped by on the third day to see how things were progressing. If we had a question, we would call Hope and she would get back to us as soon as she could, usually within an hour. My wife and I could not be more pleased with the final results. To us, we now have a Homearama bathroom in our house. My wife and I would recommend you call Jim Carver and Sons for your remodeling and if you are lucky, you may get Hope as your designer.
Description of Work: Total remodel of our master bathroom in a house that is 31 years old and still had all the original fixtures except the toilet and light above the vanity.
