Watch your wallet. I bought nine tubers, or dahlias, from this company in the spring of 2013 and only three came up from the ground and bloomed. This means that the company is not shipping tubers with "eyes". A tuber needs "eyes" in order to bloom, or even to produce shoots to come out of the ground. I spent a good deal of money with this company and had very little in my garden to show for it. When I complained about this to the company they did not back their product. Not at all. So if you do business with this company, beware.

Response from Swan Island Dahlias
The following is our documentation of email conversations with [member name removed] with regard to her dahlia order. [member name removed] placed this order March 21, 2013 and shipped to her on April 19, 2013. We were contacted by email November 18, 2013. I have enclosed copies of the email correspondence and our replies for your records. [member name removed] ordered was shipped April 19, 2013. She contacted us to reported a list of tubers she reported as not having eyes on November 18, 2013, after the replacement report date as per our guarantee/terms of sale (enclosed) She wanted double the amount of the original order sent to her at no charge, or she would send a bar report to Angie’s list, and any other website she could. We replied, since she was past our report date, we requested return of tubers within 10 days with replacements set up for the original amount ordered upon receipt of product. She replied that she dug up all the tubers and they shriveled up, so she disposed of them, and threw away all plant markers, therefore she wasn’t returning any product. We replied back that we were unable to set up replacements at this late date under the circumstances. It should be noted that our Terms of Sale & replacement notification policy are included on her invoices, catalog and printed material included with all orders, as well as on our Website. All tubers are inspected three times, first when they are processed, then selected for retail sales, again when the order is filled for the customer, and again when that order is packed for shipment. We are confident when the order leaves the warehouse for shipment that the they are viable, healthy tubers. We ask that the order be opened and inspected upon receipt, and any tuber that a customer has a concern or question about be reported immediately. Any other issues to be reported during the growing season but no later than October 1st. However, as a perishable product, failures happen. The usual cause is weather related, or soil issues (such as weed retardants or herbicides applied). Our guarantee covers these issues and are taken care of when reported within the time frame we request. Our guarantee and replacement policy are listed under our Terms of Sale, and included in our catalog that is mailed to each of our customers. It is also on our Website, and included in the orders sent to the customer. It is also printed on the invoice/order copy enclosed with her order and serves as her receipt. We are a family owned and operated business and have been in business for over 80 years. We love what we do, and strive to help our customers with their questions and growing concerns, and do so all summer long. Dahlias are a perishable product and as such, it is reasonable request that problems and concerns be addressed during the growing season and within the time constraints we set up when it is possible for us to help determine or solve growing issue.
