I was taking care of a skylight leaking issue while my father was out of town. This contractor took advantage of my lack of knowledge both of roofing repair and the roofing history of the house. Here's what he did: 1) He charged $540 dollars for flashing a skylight that took him less than an hour to complete. 2) He recommended that the small section of the roof where the skylight was located to be completely re-roofed due to disrepair (I later found out that area as well as the entire roof was re-roofed 5 years ago). He gave me an estimate of $2100 for a small flat roofing area. 3) He recommended that the gutters be cleaned for $200 as they were clogged (I later found out from my father that all the gutters have screens on them and cannot be clogged). 4) He gave me a business card with only the numbers $540 written on it as a receipt. When I asked for a detailed receipt, he said I would get an e-mail with that information. I have yet to receive that e-mail. And finally, and this worried me a great deal. 5) He allowed his 8 or 9-year old son to go up on the roof of a 3-story house. Enough said, this was a dishonorable contractor, just the kind, ironically, you want to avoid by using Angie's List.
