Spoke to Mike, who was nice enough and helped answer some of the questions I had. I'm sure they do good work, but if you live in Jersey City don't bother contacting them. They are not interested in working with the permit/inspection process in JC so they are not interested in our job.

The initial consultation and estimate were both timely and professional. Mike accommodated our evening schedule and took his time to explain the work required and the recommended course of action. A formal estimate was emailed the following day and All City took care of setting up the required permits and town inspections. On the day of the installation the work team arrived shortly after 9am, worked diligently throughout the day to complete the job, acted extremely professionally, and cleaned up after themselves upon completion of the work. All and all the work was stellar, prices fair, and we won't hesitate to call Mike again when the need arises.

Guys came for the estimate, which matched the final bill. The work required three full days. The entire time, All City was professional, courteous and incredibly hard working. Nice guys too. I had issues with my cable provider, and they went out of their way to do what they could. They took the time to get the job done right, not just get it done, and clearly took pride in their work.

The electrician showed up on time, and was polite and courteous. He also located the problems; a breaker needed to be switched on and the reset button on power outlet needed to be pushed, and he also corrected the wiring of a light fixture. ... The problem is that these basic fixes, which could have easily been done in an hour took two hours to complete. This was not entirely the electrician's fault. First, he immediatly located the thrown breaker switch and fixed that. He rewired the light fixture in about 20 minutes. And the bathroom power outlet with the reset button was hidden from view behind items in a cabinet. However, he never asked me "Is there a power outlet in the bathroom?" He did ask "Is anything else in your place not working?" But this question got me thinking about failed kitchen appliances and inoperable hall lights, not the location of a power outlet. Had he simply asked "Where's the bathroom power outlet?" we would have been spared a needless hour-plus of testing power linkages and visiting the basement and getting ready to drill holes in walls to make an entirely new and unnecessary electrical connection. Just before he took this drastic step I asked if this new connection would also affect the bathroom power outlet. "There's a power outlet? I couldn't find it" he said. At which point I quickly located the outlet, he pushed the reset button, and the problem was solved. ... My sense was that this was an honest mistake; a communication glitch. Although it does seem that an expert electrician would expect a bathroom to have at least one power outlet, and would explicitly ask the customer about this. But perhaps he thought he'd done so but asking if "anything else in the house was not working." Given the shared responsibility for this miscommunication, I would have been satisfied splitting the difference, billing me for 1.5 hours rather than 2 hours. ... I called the company owner to register my concerns and to see if we could negotiate a modest price reduction. The owner was immediately defensive and heatedly told me why my concerns were unreasonable. I heard him out, and asked him to listen to my perspective. Before I could do so, he shouted at me "Oh, I know your kind." What kind is that, I asked? He resumed a rant that was increasingly abusive in tone, and so I hung up on him. His offensiveness was as troubling as the excess time to fix the problem. The "I know your kind" comment is particularly disturbing. Apparently several other Angie's List subscribers have also experienced belligerent behavior from the company owner.

Response from All City Electrical
To be clear to all viewers of this customers comment. Client called us saying he changed a light fixture and after that he lost power to other lights in his apartment. My first response to him was "Did you check your panel to see if you tripped a breaker while changing the light" His answer was yes I even changed the breaker. We arrived and found that 1 breaker in the panel was off not tripped and we turned it on and rewired the light so it was installed in a safe manner. He then asked if we could look at another issue separate then what the original call was for that a bathroom which he doesn't use which was completely full from floor to ceiling with personal items. We checked all switches and lights as well as a exhaust fan that was not even wired to begin with and were not working. We use a special machine "Tone Generator" that we use for troubleshooting that helps problem fast. We found that the bathroom did not ring back to anything in the house which took almost a hour of diagnostic. We gave him a solution to re-wire the bathroom which would only take about a hour and right before we began to start that process he asked can you make sure the outlet in the cabinet works when you rewire the bathroom. Well the outlet that was concealed in the bathroom cabinetry was the problem. This customer was asked several times 'Sir do you have anything in the house that's not working" because the reading from our machine indicated that would be the issue and we were told no. He was even in the bathroom with us sifting through his storage looking for a a outlet that could of been buried behind his storage The problem is outlets are not allowed to be buried in bathroom cabinetry and must be accessible. Obviously he forgot the outlet was in there to begin.with and most of realized it later in the search. We don't search inside of cabinetry for electrical items because they are not normally found in there. He was charged a hourly rate as stated prior to us arriving. He then called us stating that he wanted us to split the bill with him because it was a simple fix which it was but took over 2 hours to determine it. Not our fault actually his. He's the one who decided to do his own electrical work and cause the problem he had not us we just fixed it. His request was not a responsible one and after 20 minutes of listening to him rant and rave the conversation ended. To top it off he asked us to show him how to change outlets in his house so he can do it. I guess he didn't learn his lesson the first time. Electrical work is not a hobby. All City Electrical

Mike the owner showed up promptly for estimate. He was very clear and understood exactly what was required. Our home had some pretty old equipment and a bit unique. Matt and Ralph showed up to home on day of install and just went straight to work following hellos. Very professional and worked extremely hard. Did an awesome job. Town Inspector said the job was top notch. I am happy to be reference, if needed, and look forward to working with this company again.

Mike the owner came over to give me the estimate, he was in line with the other two I had called. He came on time and covered his feet when he entered my home. He sent two of his men to do the job, it took about one and half days to complete. These men were professional, courteous, and extremely thorough. They called me a work to check with me about a simple thing. The waiting for me to come home and do an walk through to make sure I was satisfied with the job. I would highly recommend them. This is the first time I used someone from Angie's List and I was very impressed.

Provider visited twice. Once to review work to be performed and provide an estimate, and a second time to do the actual work. Beefore entering my house both times, they but booties on feet. They were extremely detailed in their work, and checked all of the work to make sure it worked properly before finishing the job. They showed up when they said, and were extremely courteous and professional.

Based on an Angie's List selection of possible electricians in my area, we picked a contractor in the area: All City Electric, Kennilworth, NJ, for the installation of a dimmer switch and outlet in an existing wall receptacle: The technician installed a new dimmer switch and outlet. A few weeks after the work was done we discovered that if you touch the switch plate in certain areas you received an electric shock, which my wife, myself and my children all experienced. When the owner of All City Electric was contacted he was brusk, a bit hostile, told us it wasn't something they would cause, and was reluctant to send someone to see why the electric "shock" problem exists. After a day's wait for someone to come, which did not happen, we called All City again in an attempt to reschedule. At this time, the owner indicated that we are probably imagining the electric "shock" issue, and that his technician would never have left us with such a problem. He reluctantly agreed to send someone the next day, but because of his rudeness my wife did not choose to have anything further to do with All City. Because this may be a safety issue we have no choice but to engage another licensed electrician to resolve the problem. If this is the type of contractor that is included on Angie's List, we probably won't use it in the future. Hal Denstman (hdenstman@comcast.net) 908-276-8849

Member contacted us originally complaining of feeling a electrical tingle when operating the dimmer switch in the bathroom. When we arrived the dimmer did not even work so we replaced it. Showed them there was no issue with existing wiring and new dimmer switch worked fine very simple job. We received a call 2 months later stating the same thing that customer was feeling a tingle when operating the dimmer. I explained to them that it's not a shock bit it's the vibration on the switch plate which is very subtle but because she has metal plates it's more noticeable if people ate very sensitive to stuff like that and there was nothing we could do but change the dimmer to a regular switch but they did not want to part with the dimmer. They cancelled their appointment for a return visit and all calls were returned in a timely manner. She was rude to us we just did the listening and explaining. All City Electric

Everything went very well. The entire staff, including the receptionist at the office who were talked to frequently to schedule the jobs were polite and professional. For the estimates, Mike was thorough and explained what he could and couldnt do, as well as giving us some great ideas. The estimate was provided within a few days of the appointment, and was broken up by each individual piece of work, so that we knew how much it would cost if we wanted to do the jobs seperately. We were charged $80 for the visit/estimate, which we were informed of before because it was an estimate for work on a home that we didn't own. We were reimbursed the $80 on the actual work done. For the main job(sub panel replacement, recessed lighting), Mike's team was great. They were all very friendly and professional(wearing bags on their shoes, cleaning up after completion, making sure everything worked), and everything was done great. In #3 in the section above, Joe came out on a few days notice after I talked to Mike about outlets not working. Joe figured out the issue in a short time, and had everything working quickly and at reasonable cost($145). Unfortunately, Mike had to deal with the headache of getting permits/inspections in Jersey City for us. We greatly appreciate his patience with the local government, and when the inspector did finally come(months after the initial request/completion of the work), he(the inspector) missed something in the inspection and was ready to fail the permit/work. Fortunately, Mike was available by phone right away, and he talked to the inspector and requested that he take a second look. As expected, Mike was correct and the work was done to code with no issues. Overall, the experience working with All City Electrical has been a great one. We will continue to contract them for electrical work needed in our home. Thanks Mike and Joe!
Description of Work: We had many interactions/jobs with Mike and the folks at All City Electrical over the last few months. 1. Appointment/Estimate: When we were looking to purchase our home, Mike came out to give an estimate on replacing a sub-panel, as it was called out as needing repair by our home inspector. While he was here, Mike also provided estimates for several other pieces of work that would were interested in. Mike was friendly and professional. 2. Sub-Panel Replacement and recessed lighting: After purchasing our home, Mike came with his crew of 4(including himself, Joe was the other lead electrician) and performed the following: - replacement of damaged sub-panel - removal of pool-table light, and capping of switch that controlled it - installation of 3 recessed lights on a dimmer - installation of 5 low-voltage recessed lights on a dimmer 3. Outlet issues: A few months later, we had Joe come back out to look at some outlets that weren't working. 4. Inspector 'facilitation': Mike helped facilitate the inspection process that was required because of the replacement of the sub panel.

Note: Obviously the cost was not $1. I just feel strange entering it. However, it was competitive and below the cost I got from other contractors. In case you don't want to read the below, we are COMPLETELY pleased with the work that was completed by All City (and subcontractor TNT Plumbing & Heating). I came across All City on AL as a last minute decision to get one more quote on the job. Mike Volpe came out to the house and I was sold IMMEDIATELY on his straight forwardness and his eagerness to take his time and answer all of my questions. I had no feeling what-so-ever that I was holding him up from something else. Other contractors I had come over to quote did give the impression that they had spent too much time with me (and they spent far less time than Mike did). He also came off as more sincere and trustworthy (this is subjective but it is how I felt).. That being said the job took about two months to be completed. The main holdup was gas company who had to visit to see if the meter/gas line from street could meet capacity. However, Mike did let me know that they've hit major delays on these jobs due to the gas company so I was prepared. Once the gas company got back in touch with All City, Mike called me to let me know the details. Gas line to house was fine, gas meter needed to be upgraded at no charge to me. Mike had known my discomfort with the additional cost of having to upgrade the pipe from the street to house if needed (many thousand $$ more) so he held off ordering the generator. However, once ready it took only two weeks to get from Generac. All City is electrical only, however, in this installation he sub contracts the plumbing to another company (TNT Plumbing & Heating, Paul Floria). Mike provided a contract with pricing and payment expectations which included all of the plumbing expenses. This was nice since I didn't have to spend time to find a plumbing contractor myself. ELECTRICAL On the 20th of June first thing in the a.m. (as I was told) two of Mike's guys show up to start the install. (NOTE: Thankfully we hadn't hit the 90 degree weather yet since we had no electric the entire day). Within an hour a third shows up. Then around lunch time Mike himself shows up with the generator. Mike is hands on as well so we had four of them working on the job that day. They finished it around 4 p.m. I was (pleasantly) surprised at the attention to detail with the job itself. In fact, it was nice to see they all have pride in their work (they took the time to show me and explain their work. I got bored at times so I would walk around to see what they were working on). I had a chance to see inside the electric panel before it was closed and it was a beautiful job (not that I'm an expert just from comparing to the previous panels at our house). The entire crew were respectful and all eager to answer questions I had while they were working. Mike in particular is proud of the work he and his crew perform. You can tell by the amount of time they took to do the job right. Also, when it was obvious when I talked with him about certain aspects of the job. That they take pride in their work is especially good to know as a homeowner because you want contractors that will do an exceptional job on your house. This is what makes All City a keeper in my (address) book. I do need additional electrical work done and Mike will be who I contact for it. PLUMBING Surprisingly (or maybe not so) I have the same feeling about TNT Plumbing and Heating as I do about All CIty (and they will remain in my address book for future plumbing needs). As soon as I signed the contract, Paul reached out to me for a visit to determine gas usage of current gas appliances. He arrived on schedule and was polite and professional. I had some questions regarding the plumbing which he took time to answer and didn't rush off. Keep in mind that he scheduled the visit on a weekday after 6 p.m. So most people,I would think, would want to get out as soon as possible. Paul and his crew were scheduled to do the plumbing on the 22nd. However, Paul called me during the week to ask if we could schedule prior to the weekend. We arranged for him to come the same day as electrical but around 4/5 p.m. after the electricians were finishing up. Him and his crew showed up on time and began to run the piping through the basement (approx 25 feet of it). They did a great job. These guys (3 of them on our job) appear to have pride in the work as well and they took the time to do it properly. They didn't finished up until around 8/9 p.m. that night. This is after working a regular work day. Paul needed to come back on Sunday to finish securing the end of the segment. He also setup the pressure gauge and filled the pipe for the pressure test which was to be done that Monday morning by the town Plumbing Inspector. The pressure gauge was set on Paul's arrival and it showed proper pressure when he checked after he had completed what he needed to finish (approx 45 minutes). He asked me to keep an eye on it and let him know if anything should change that evening. Unfortunately, it did. It began dropping pressure. I sent a picture to Paul to show him. He called me back and after chatting told me that he would be up by the house first thing int he morning before Inspector showed up. He showed up early and did tests on all fittings. It ended up being the reducer he needed to use with the pressure gauge. While Paul was still at the house the Inspector showed up. Paul walked him through the basement and they discussed what he would do prior to final plumbing inspection. After pressure test, Paul showed up later in the week (after hours) to finish connecting the pipe to the gas meter and also to the generator. This required painting the pipe, patching the holes, (and answering some more questions from me). He left and scheduled the final plumbing inspection for that Thursday (the 27th). Plumbing Inspector showed up and passed it. Mike calls me after that and schedules a time for setup and initial startup of generator. We scheduled that Friday (28th) after hours. He goes through all the details of the generator and does the initial startup and the cutover of house power to generator. Once done, he asks me for days/times the following week so he can schedule electrical/fire inspections. I believe that was done Tuesday July 2nd. All inspections passed without incident. The final step was having the meter replaced which could only be arranged after all inspections were completed. That was done yesterday. Oddly, someone from the gas company needed to come out on Monday to inspect our inspections and look at the install itself. I have never been more eager to pay a company for the work they have provided. As far as I'm concerned, I >>WANT<< All City and TNT to be profitable because I think they are great companies (people). However, I also want that so I can utilize their services in the future (selfish reason). Compared to quotes from other contractors it's nice to know they can do this work at a reasonable price.

The person I spoke to clearly did not want the small job I needed done. I called to get an estimate on repairing the outside light post at my house. He said they do not give estimates on repairs only an hourly rate. ANY reputable business will give you an estimate! If its a difficult estimate or requires a certain amount of time they may charge you for the estimate, usually they will wave the estimate\service charge if you have them do the work. It was quite clear he didn't want to "waste" his time to come out to my house to a**** the job. Don't let them B.S. you in a response to this review either. I contacted Diamond Electrical Service (#1 on my list when sorted by grade) and they were more than happy to give me an estimate based on my description of the problem.

We explained to customer that for anything that doesn't work we can not provide a estimate for cost of repair as we do not know the issue at hand just by looking at it that there is a level of work that is involved called troubleshooting which requires labor, tools and possible materials. This is whats called a service call which is a set fee for 1 hour of repair then a per 1/2 hour charge if repair takes longer then that first hour. The customer did not like this answer and began to argue with us on the phone. I then explained to him the only way we can provide you with a estimate if it was a complete rewire of the line and re-install of the post which could cost a significant amount of money and may not be needed based on what was told to us about how the damage occurred to the existing post. After being on the phone for 20 minutes letting the customer verbally go off on us on how we should run our business and how we were going to charge him we then politely declined the job not because it was small but due to the way this customer was treating our staff as we were only just given him a pricing guide and information on his options for addressing the situation. We are small family oriented company "4 man crew along with 1 person that handles our office duties." 90% of our work is residential (repairs, lighting, service panels, generators etc.) So to all customers viewing this post we never decline any job small or large but we will not engage in stressful unhealthy work relationships just to make a buck. They are very nice. They were clean, they have to drill a hole, they spackled it and they cleaned everything behind them. They were nice, efficient and they were in and out in 2 hours, I don't have anything bad to say about them.
Description of Work: I have used All City Electrical. I have a chandelier put up and I had some outlets that are no longer working and they fixed them all.

I contacted All City Electrical after seeing the good rating on Angie's List. I received a call back right away. Within a day the president of All City Electrical, Mike came to our home and reviewed what we wanted done. He came up with a good money saving idea for the outside electrical install. I received a quotation by e-mail the next day. Within a week they sent a mechanic to do the install. Joe the installation mechanic was professional and courteous. He complete all the work in a little over 2 hours. He even put on shoe covers when entering our home. After the work was completed he showed me how the service switch in the attic worked and had me inspect the outside install to make sure I was happy with the job. Overall, a neat and quick job.
Description of Work: Provide wiring and service switch for attic fan and install dedicated 20 amp GFI outlet outside.

The work performed was great. The workers performed their jobs professionally. The only reason for giving them a C on professionalism is the guy in charge and my wife had a disagreement over something and put me in the middle of it and would not budge. It was over the time of payment as my wife had to leave to go to her office and would not leave a check without seeing the completed work. He refused to come over the next day or any other day and walk us through the completed work. In the end I decided that he needed to budge and come back after I returned from out of state at 9pm that night and walk us through and if he could not accept that he needed to take his crew off my property. He gave in and showed up at 9pm, showed us the work and received full payment. If you live a busy lifestyle then they may not be the company for you however the work completed was excellent. If you have someone that can stay and pay the second they are complete then I would suggest them. Edit: After seeing his response I have bring the truth out. We had no contract, he wanted to do things without, all I received on paper was the estimate. He wanted me to leave the money on the counter for him without a finished product. He knew that I had to go to work. He complained about coming late that night so I suggested another day which he refused. He yelled at me on the phone because I wanted a finished job before I left the money. I no longer suggest anyone use his service.
Description of Work: Electric service and Breaker box replacment.

Customer was given a written contract with payment details outlined in their contract along with a 3 day schedule plan with arrival times and completion times which all were met. Customer decided on the last day about 40 minutes before we were about to finish to leave the property and not submit payment and alter the terms and conditions of the contract. We did not feel comfortable with the situation as it seemed a bit odd to skip out minutes before completion and refuse to pay as they owed us a significant amount of money and we needed signatures on completed work along with doing a walk through with the customer. We had to then return to the property at 9:30pm at night to collect payment and do our walk through so we could be paid for the services we rendered causing us additional time and money for no reason.
