They helped me disassemble a futon and move it out of the room. I was impressed because, of the peole who I called for an estimate, Ken was the only one that pointed out to me that some boards might have to be changed. He told me that, if there were only a few that needed to be done he wouldn't charge me, and if it were more in would most likely be under $100. He was true to his word. The work was extremely professional, and the room looks great! They were prompt and cleaned up after themselves. Their estimate did not include moving the furniture back into the room, which I knew. I got cold feet about reassembling the futon and called Ken and asked if he could do so at an additional charge. He was clearly VERY busy, and it was difficult for him to get back here to to it in a timely fashion (and in the end, I was able to do it myself) yet he tried hard to figure out how he might help me. I have already recommended him to my neighbors who are planning on using him.
Description of Work: They refinished the floor in a hallway and bedroom. They were wonderful!

Ken showed up on time with his crew of workers. The men went right to work sanding the floors (which were in quite bad shape). I gave him a key to the house and left for the day. The stain and finish were applied the next day. The job was completed quickly and efficiently. He even did a small repair for no charge. The worst part of the process was moving everything out of the house before the job. My son and I moved everything out before Ken and crew started the job and it was a difficult process. When Ken gave us our estimate he indicated that his guys would move something if it was too much for me. I did not need him to do this but it was very nice of him to offer.
Description of Work: Ken and crew refinished the entire first floor of my home. He did a fine job, being extremely professional and personable during the whole process. His attitude was upbeat and his Irish accent and sense of humor was a real plus when dealing with him. His was not the lowest estimate we received but we went with him because of his relaxed but professional vibe.

We had Bantry refinish one floor on our first floor that had some stains and scratches on it. Ken and his team were very punctual and did a very efficient job. We had just had the room painted and they did a very good job trying to protect the new paint job. It took two days... but they were in and out in no time. The floor looks great!

They moved some very heavy furniture for me and replaced it all to my exact requests when they were finished. The old carpet was glued down (the room is on a concrete slab) and it was quite a job to get it all up, but they stuck with it. The stairs that they sanded and finished came out gorgeous, so I sure wouldn't hesitate to use ken to finish floors. Before they left, they cleaned everything up and left the carpet in small neat rolls for garbage pick up.My room looks beautiful and I wouldn't hesitate to use Bantry for any work in the future.
Description of Work: I hired Bantry Floors to rip up carpet in my family room and install pre-finished hardwood flooring (which I had already). They also ripped up the carpet on a small set of stairs and then sanded and finished the stairs to match the flooring.I obtained 3 estimates for the job and while the prices were close, I chose ken due to his good reviews. I was glad I did!First off, Ken was pleasant to deal with and clearly knows his trade well. He showed up with his very capable worker, at the time promised, every day. Ken didn't stay the whole time, but he came back multiple times each day to be sure everything was going well.
They did a real good job. The job is messy in itself and they did a good job with keeping the dust at a minimum. They did what they told me they would do beforehand and there was no surprises or price differences. I found him off of Angie's List and I would use him again.

I first called Bantry Floors on April 3rd, 2012, left a message, & received a call back from Ken within a few minutes. I chose Bantry because they were located very close to my apartment (less than 5 miles away), & because of the positive reviews on Angie's List. Sometimes Ken would call me back within a few minutes, sometimes a few days later, sometimes not at all. I would have to call him back a week or two later to follow up, then remind him who I was & what work I wanted done. Ken told me that he would come by, then said he couldn't find parking & had to go to another appointment, then wouldn't call back when he said he would. Finally, almost 2 months later, he said I should find another company to work with since he's too busy. Plain and simple, a professional business would not give a potential customer the run-around, wishy-washy responsiveness that I received. If you're too busy, just say so. If you don't want the job, just say so. I shouldn't have to wait & repeatedly call for weeks and weeks and weeks to get nothing in return. As a professional in the architecture & construction industry, I deal with contractors, plumbers, & electricians on a daily basis. I am always looking for new sub-contractors for both my personal & professional projects. I also know when someone is not interested. I know a repair / refinish job is not as profitable as a new floor installation, which might be the case here. Maybe I should have said that I have a 6,000 square foot home that needs all new hardwood flooring throughout. I don't think I am asking too much. just be honest, upfront, & follow up with your potential customers.

Response from Bantry Floors LLC
As mentioned by this member I returned his call promptly and made the effort to drive to his neighborhood to give him an estimate. Unfortunately the gentleman lives in a very congested area and I was unable to find a parking space. I called him immediately to let him know that I had been circling and couldn't park and that we should set something up for another day. We spoke a few times again. Since I didn't hear from him for a while I presumed he found another company which was understandable. I then received another "message" after which I decided it would be best for the gentleman to find another contractor. I believe my angies list record speaks for itself, and I'm sure customers understand that on the rare occasion under certain circumstances and individual reasons things don't work out. I hope the gentleman finds what he wants.

If you are trying to get your floors refinished within a reasonable timeframe, I would not recommend Bantry. We traded phone calls for about 2-3 weeks and when we finally spoke he indicated he would call me when he was available. That was a week ago and I still haven' t heard. I went to Bantry because of their ratings but never got beyond a couple of phone calls.

First off, I'm extremely tardy in submitting this report, but better late than never. Ken did a superb job with the floors of our house. He and his crew repaired, sanded, stained, and refinished 3 floors of hardwood, 3,300 square feet worth. It is an old house and it was a tough job, but Ken completed the job on time and for the quoted price. The floors turned out beautifully! So many people come into our house and ask about the new floors we installed, only to find out they were refinished. Ken was also very accommodating with our crazy schedule as we were dealing with painters and moving companies all around his time in the house. He moved the started date to accommodate the painters running late and still managed to finish up in time to let the floors dry before the movers came. I highly recommend Bantry Floors and will certainly use him in the future.
Description of Work: Repairing, sanding, staining, and refinishing of the hardwood floors in our entire house... 3300 square feet worth. He also did the same for the stairs and banister.
We just bought our first home, a lovely 4 bedroom, 2800 sq foot colonial. It was only built in 2002, but we didn't like the light stained floors, and wanted to make the place our own before we moved in all our furniture. We have contemporary taste, and really wanted dark wood flooring. I called Ken from the number shown on Angie's list, and he got back to me right away. He came right out on a saturday, was very punctual and sized up all my rooms accordingly. He is very friendly and professional. He gave me honest advice at the pro's and con's of water vs. oil based finish for the floors. In less than 48 hours, he emailed me the estimate, which seemed pretty much on target for what I expected it to cost. We are also having a major kitchen remodel done at the same time, as well as work done on several other parts of the house, and decided to use our general contractor for the floors as part of larger package. However, I would have no reservation about calling Ken to do the work, and can easily recommend him to anyone. Kudo's to Angie's list for making the hardest part picking between several good companies at once.
Description of Work: This was for an estimate of hardwood floor refinishing for a 2800 sq ft home. There is hardwood in nearly the entire house (Except 3 bathrooms, and the 2 car garage). The estimate was for dustless sanding of everything down to the bare wood, staining to a darker color, and coating with 3 coats of water based finish. This also included the treads for the stairs, the banister, and a 3 by 6 ft ledge 1 story above the front door In the end, we decided to go for a different company that was rolled into a whole package our general remodel contractor was providing for multiple rooms we are having done.

It went beyond splendid. Ken came in appraised the job, I had an extremely reasonable quote within a hour. He was able to start when I needed and finished the entire house in 4 days. The floors look remarkable including an area that was warped and broken requiring replacement boards. You wouldn't even notice! These guys were punctual and neat could not have asked for more.

I contacted Ken and he returned my call. I had two rooms of parquet floors that required sanding, some repair, and finishing. When I informed Ken of the sizes of the rooms (12' x 13'; and 16' x 13') and that I lived in the Bronx, NY he told me that the job was too small for him to make the trip across the bridge.

First af all, dos. If you can remove your room doors easily, do so. Makes the job go alot quicker. Dont's: If you have pets dont take your eyes off them. Better yet don't even get pets. Get rid of them! (just kidding). After my beautiful floors were completed I was getting my final instructions from Ken on how to care for the floors. When we looked up my dog was.... Yes, my dog was walking on the livingroom floor which was still wet with polyurithane. My wife was about to cry and we were about to be minus one dog with sticky paws. Ken reasured us that it would be OK and he was able to fix it a week later for a very reasonable price. Another don't is don't be an idiot like me! After Ken fixed the floor, I was replaceing all the doors I had taken off. Well, I didn't know that behind one of the doors there was a door mirror. As I was walking up the stares with this door the mirror slid off the door and came crashing down onto the same area that my dog messed up the week prior. Now I have 7 years bad luck and a half inch chunk missing off my floor. Now I was in the dog house. I called Ken, who I feel I know very well now, and he was very understanding. I completely trust he will take care of it for a reasonable price. My lesson and final DO. Do keep Bantry Floors on speed dial.
Description of Work: They redid our hardwood floors, the whole house. We have three large bedrooms, a hallway and a large livingroom/dining room. The floors were faded. They had old paint and drill holes(for cables) in several of the rooms. When Ken came over to give an estimate he seemed very knowledgeable and was very friendly. He explained everything wee needed to know. We have two dogs and he explained what's the best finish to use if you have pets. It was a three day process and each day his men arrived almost to the minute of when they were scheduled to arrive. They worked quickly and quietly, other than the loud sound of the sander (they can't help that). They fixed all the holes in my floors, sanded, and stained all in one day. Then one day drying time and one day to polyurithane. They also did the wood trim around our Bay Window to match the floor. They did everything exactly as he said and I would definately use them again. As a matter of fact I have: read Dos and don'ts.

Ken was very responsive and upfront about what he could do and gave me a an estimate via e-mail the next day. I added a larger bedroom and the price was adjusted accordingly. The job took three days. Ken sent a two man crew who worked from 9 to 5 every day. They were skilled installers and left the home in immaculate condition. They cut up the carpet and padding into smaller rolls. This is important because the trash removal service will not pick up this type of refuse unless it is prepared this way. Ken used Somerset hardwood and it is beautiful. The installers took great care with each plank. Molding was added, the floors were swept and I was given advice on how to care for the floors. Ken came on the first and last days to supervise and discuss the job. Ken is an interesting fellow who has worked many years to hone his craft and train some excellent workers. I realize now why his ratings are so high. That is how I found him. I had no worries and didn't want any. And he and his crew came through. He is trustworthy and honest, something that seems to be in short supply with more than a few tradesmen. Highly recommended.

It was flawless. Ken and the workmen came on time and completed the work quickly. The results were great. I love my new upstairs bedrooms that are now hardwood flooring. The carpets were very dirty and I'm just not good at removing the spots and stains. Now it is easy!
Description of Work: I've used this company twice now and plan to use them again in the fall. Ken is wonderful and he is a joy to work with!
Found this company on Angie's list - had wonderful ratings and I now know why. Calls returned promptly, Ken, the owner came around exactly when promised. Looked over the job and provided an accurate estimate by email the same night. The extremely professional crew arrived exactly on time and proceeded to help by moving heavy pieces of furniture out of the dining room as well as alot of stuff from the bedroom including a treadmill which needed to be taken apart. Great care was taken with all our furniture. Then the very arduous task of removing decades of built up finish from our oak floors began in ernest. It took an entire day with heavy duty machinery to get down to bare wood. After one day it already looked amazing. Then sanding and staining by hand. Then one day was skipped to let the stain dry properly. Back the next day to apply the first of two top coats in a beautiful semi gloss finish. The floors look better than new which was the real surprise - I thought they were beyond repair. Was I wrong! We let everything dry over the weekend and as promised Ken and his crew came back to help put furniture back in place. I almost didn't want to cover them with furniture anymore.

Ken did an amazing job. He was always prompt and delivered on time and exactly as promised. In the process, he encountered some bad wood after removing the carpet and took the time to call and make a smart decision to remove flooring from the back of closets to replace the visible floor with exactly the same wood. The job was done on two of the hottest days of the year and yet he still completed as promised. Ken is a great guy and I would highly recommend Bantry Floors to anyone.

I think Ken and his crew are fantastic!!! It was great experience from beginning to end. The initial meeting went fairly quickly -- and I was a bit concerned at first, but I guess I was comparing it to a 2 hour meeting with another flooring contractor that I had gotten an estimate from previously. Ken told me he would give me an estimate by the end of the weekend, and on that Sunday the estimate was in my email. We set an initial date, which I needed to move due to other contract work in the house. When the date was finally confirmed work started on time. On the second day of work it took me over 2 hours to pick stain colors. Ken and his assistant were very patient and accomodating. I needed to see several different stain colors w/poly on the floors in order to make a decision. It was a big decision to make as a lot of money was on the line. It would have been an expensive mistake for me. It was probably agony for him, because I second guessed myself about 1000 times, but he was very professional and didn't let on that I was a crazy person who couldn't make a decision :) All the work Ken and his team did was first class. Ken answered all my questions and was very quick to get back to me whenever I had to leave a voice mail. The floors look gorgeous, what a difference it has made to the house. Everyone was professional from start to finish. The work started and ended in a timely manner and they left the house spotless. Couldn't ask for anything better. I'm sure the floors will need touching up in the future ... I hope Bantry floors will be available for me.
Description of Work: We had just purchased a home with hardwood floors in every room -- and I mean every room, including the kitchen and the bathroom. There was water damage to the dining room floor from what we gather could have been an aquarium, as well in another room, so some of the floor boards needed to be replaced in both of those rooms. We had all the floors in the house sanded and re-stained. I also asked for some of the "squeaks" to be removed as well. We used the dustless system which worked out wonderfully due to the amount of square footage that was being touched.

had called Ken since he was on Angie's list. I wanted an estimate of re- doing/ replaing my wooden floors in west new york, nj. He was prompt and arrived on time. But as soon as he got there , he seemed un- prepared. He didn't have his tape measure - so he couldnt measure the space. He said his car was too far away and would i ask the other contracttors to measure it and call him with the measurements. He seemed in a hurry In addition, I brought up that he needed a permit in west new y ork - and he was definite that NONE was required for floors I was said I wasn't going to work without a permit and he assured me that no permit is required. I called the town on two separate occasions and they said indeed permits are required for floor installations. I called Ken back and told him the town requires a permit. He called me back and said - he guesses that different towns have different requirements. He then asked me for the square footage of the space - and gave me an exorbitant amount. I would never work with this guy!

Response from Bantry Floors LLC
In response to this customer: I received the call for an estimate, responded in a timely manner, and arrived on time on the day as arranged. the customer was not there and I waited for him. I had mislaid my tape measure but asked politely if he knew the square footage. When he did not, I asked if he could pass on the square footage from another contractor who was due to measure. Each town varies regarding the need for permits, I didn't think one was needed so I ADVISED HIM to call his particular town to verify. As a licensed and insured floor contractor, if permits are ever needed, I will always obtain them for the job. I provided him with an initial rough estimate over the phone, per square foot for the cost of the job. He was very unsure of what he wanted installed, and I had to repeat several times that I only do wood floors. His lack of decision on what he wanted made it impossible for me to provide a more accurate estimate. I am always more than happy to discuss estimates in more detail if customers are interested. I hope that Member finally decided what he needed and found a contractor to suit his varied needs.
