after looking at the A/C, the guy said it needed a new capacitor. he then quoted the price of just the capacitor at $285, and tried to explain that it was the 'best one on the market.' while he did the work, the most expensive one i could find on the internet was $100. being 90+ degrees in my house, i let him finish. i asked him again why it was so expensive, and he said that's the part price for an emergency job. in addition, the labor for 30 min of work was another $150 or so. total bill came out to around $450.
as for the expertise and the quality of work, they were fine. they did the job quickly.
i called to speak to a manager the next day, and he said he would get back to me. he never did, i'm guessing because there's no good reason to charge that much for that part.
i understand that they did the job and that i paid for it, my issue is that i didn't expect to get gouged by a vendor provided by Angie's list. the whole point of this site is to find the reputable contractors, not the ones that overcharge customers during emergency appts. at least have the decency to call me back and try to explain it.
will never use again.

UPDATE: On 9/22/2014 I received a call from the owner of the company apologizing for the actions of their technician and requesting the opportunity to come back out and re-do the maintenance and make things right. This occurred on 9/24/2014 and the new technician took a more serious and professional approach to performing the maintenance tasks. He even found that the ignitor wire had not even been cleaned and the safety switch tied to the removal of the front panel had been disconnected (he reconnected it). He spent significant time going over and checking the furnace and the air conditioning and reviewed all of his findings and results with me at the end. I was very satisfied with this technician and feel I received quality maintenance on my heating and cooling system. I will change my opinion and will use this company again in the future. The owner does take very seriously the reputation of his business and sincerely wants to make things right with customers.

"Mr. [member name removed] I appreciate the great review on Angies List. That means a lot to Cool-o-matic Inc. A lot of companies out there try to sell you a new unit instead of having to try to find the root of the problem.What if you got a new unit installed and you had the same problem?You need to have dedicated employees who take their job seriously and can diagnose problems in a timely fashion. That's where we try and pride ourselves.Some AC systems will get leaks from time to time. The refrigerant is under such a high pressure that as the unit gets older they will get leaks in the condenser coil or evaporator coil.If you ever see a block of ice around the refrigeration lines at the out door unit or the inside coil ,more than likely there is a leak or your filter is dirty. The first one I contacted, a women said that she was going to transfer me back to the service department. It rang for awhile, and then went to voicemail. I left a detailed message with my name and number. I never received a call back from them. SOOO, I'm glad I didn't wait. I went straight to the next company.
The second one told me that they could send someone out on Wednesday. Well, today is Monday, and it is supposed to be over 90 degrees for the next few days. I set up an appointment, but then contacted Cool-O-Matic.
Cool-O-Matic told me that they could have someone at my house between 2pm and 6pm. John arrived a little after 2pm. Was extremely nice. Went straight to work, and solved the problem within minutes. The entire time that he was working on the problem, he was explaining the process to me. He told me exactly what I should do, if it ever happened again. He also advised me to purchase a small water alarm.
Bottom line is, this company sent an extremely knowledgable professional over to fix my problem the same day! They told me prior to him coming what the base cost would be, so there were no surprises. And, John did not try to run the price up or make the situation seem like it was worse than it really was. He was very comforting, which made me feel better about the whole situation.
And determined it could wait till next day. At 8am
next morning, rep called to schedule appointment for that day.
I was last on list but glad they could fit me in.
I stuffed towels under the furnace to absorb the
water till then.
The technician said the furnace was backing up,
hence the water on the floor.
He cut the PVC pipe going to the furnace hose, changed
the length of the pipe in the condensate pump and changed its pitch.
He explained everything he was doing. His name is Matt.
The other techs are good ,too.
I bought my hi efficiency furnace & new AC from
Cool O Matic and really think highly of them.
