True to MY word, I waited until the date agreed upon, and I went to the office, paid what they asked, signed the lease, got the key and happily went to see my "new" place. Surprise! The work was not done as promised. Not only that, but I saw that ALL the windows locks (including the downstairs/street level and upstairs/accessible by porch roof) WERE BROKEN. NONE of the windows were able to be locked. So I called the office. By that time they were already closed. I left a detailed voice message as well as returned to the office and left a written note telling them that I was not able to take possession of the condo due to the fact that they had not fixed things as promised and the windows couldn't be secured. I told them at that time that I needed to annul this lease as I could not move in. I did not think they would oppose this, as they had not done their part as promised.
To shorten the story, time passed, and they fixed some of the easy things, but they kept saying that it didn't matter if the windows could or couldn't lock. That no one in the past had ever needed the windows to be fixed. Then they promised to have them fixed. Then they put some pieces of wood to hold the window shut. Some of those pieces were cut too short and just fell out of the frame... Then they told me that they would change the locks, then that the locks could not be ordered, that they needed permission to get new windows, and it would take another few weeks at best, etc. All this time, I am still without a place to be, I have paid and I can't move in. I told them that I needed to move somewhere else and that I needed for them to release me of the lease.
Since I was living in different locations, and had a PO Box #, I gave that to them as well as my work address for them to contact me and for them to return my money. They instead decided to sue me, and sent the letter to the condo address, when they knew very well I was not living there, nor receiving any mail there. The agent, owner, and agency purposely lied to avoid me having knowledge that they were suing me, so that I couldn't defend myself. This agent, owner and rental agency are manipulative, calculating, devious and dishonest. They knew what they were doing was wrong, but refused to demonstrate or stand by any ethical principles and intentionally tried to dupe a single woman with children into renting an insecure and inhabitable condo from them. THEY ARE DISHONEST AND THEY ARE CROOKS. I warn everyone I know trying to rent any housing away from them.
