A friend referred us to Comfort First Heating and Cooling as they had just taken advantage of a deal runing through Angie's List and were very happy with their work. We purchased a voucher and were immediately contacted by the company. They came out within just a couple of days to give us an estimate on the job and were able to schedule the installation for the following day. The installers were prompt, courteous, and professional, and completed their work within a very short time. They left us with a totally working system and no mess to clean up. In addition, the cost of the job was lower than the other company we received an estimate from. Based on their outstanding service, we would certainly recommend and use them again in the future.

Service could not be fully performed on scheduled day, a Friday. Was told the company dispatch would call us first thing Monday morning to schedule a follow-up appointment for Monday. After waiting several hours on Monday we initiated the call. Dispatch had no idea that a follow-on appointment was required and could not promise service that day. Service member did show up and completed service, then offered to update our thermostat with a newer model and quoted us a price, he did not have the thermostat with him and asked us to call dispatch to schedule a new appointment. When we called dispatch, they told us, rather rudely that the service member misquoted us the price and tagged another $100.00 onto the quote.

When buying a big ticket item like AC and Furnace you have to have confidence the company who will install and maintain the new system. Out of all the quotes we received Comfort First did the most thorough look at our home to get just the right fit in a new system. We got the quote on a Friday and Comfort First was able to install our new system on Monday morning bright and early. Great install team showed up right on time and did a great install job, going above and beyond for us. We feel like new family members and know they will have our back throughout the life of this system. Thank you Comfort First!

The system was first put placed in the attic, it failed code and had to be moved which caused us to spend more money in drywall, construction, etc. After moving the unit they did not account for the change of placement, air return, up flow , etc. the unit would not cool the upstairs below 85. They then put in a slightly larger unit and then it was lucky to cool to 77. They came up with every reason in the world as to why it wouldn't stay cold. Except that they had planned it for being in the attic & didn't restructure the system properly, which was the case after it was re-inspected . The owner is rude and arrogant and had his workers literally ripping wires out of the newly finished walls. I had to call the deputy to keep them from further damaging our property while "tearing out" the system they had installed. Yes, they literally tore stuff out and I have the pictures to prove it. I was verbally accosted and threatened in front of the deputy by the owner and was told by him that it would be "a bad day for me" if I filed a complaint.....they did give us a refund of the original price. However we were unable to use the almost 1600 sq ft space for several months. Not to mention the additional cost we have now from drywall tear out, insulation clean up, painting, rewiring, etc. to fix the excessive damage that was done. By the way, when I told the owner if they were going to start ripping out insulation from the attic, they should have put up plastic or something because I have an immunodeficienct child. I was told "it's not my job to care about your kids".... DO NOT let this company work for you if you have anything more complex than a filter change !!!!!!

Response from Comfort First Heating & Cooling
As evidenced by our overall Angie’s List “A” rating, it is the goal of Comfort First Heating & Cooling to provide both exceptional service as well deliver an outstanding customer service experience to each and every one of our customers. This review is not indicative of our performance and we hope that you will read the other reviews posted by many other loyal Angie’s List customers regarding our service, performance and their experience with our Company. We believe our company went above and beyond in its attempt to correct this unfortunate situation and make the customer happy including a 100% refund of their purchase. On every occasion we reacted quickly and had representatives from the company at the home immediately to address the homeowner’s problems and concerns. The homeowners were never threatened or treated with disrespect as they eluded. It wasn’t until after many failed attempts and thousands of dollars spent trying to fix the problem did we regretfully come to this decision of removing the system and refunding their entire system investment. – Owner- Wes Mcleod

We had a new heat pump w/duct work installed in June of 2014 and we couldn't be happier. Two extra vents were installed in our Carolina room and what a difference in room temperature. All the workers: Mark, Cory, Brice, and Jeremy couldn't have been more professional and hard working and their work was very neatly done! Art Harmon kept in constant contact with us and it was his suggestion for the placement of the extra vents. We cannot say enough about the professionalism the crew and company exhibited and their eagerness to answer our many questions. I would recommend Comfort First to anyone!!!! Thanks guys for a job well done!! John & Peggy Telfer

1 of our air conditioner compressors died in late July! Comfort First sent Brandon out on a Saturday less than 2hrs after our first phone call. He took care of us in less than an hour for a fair price. He was professional, punctual, and educated me about our system while he was here. I'll definitely use them again!

Good and bad with this service call... First the really good: they were able to get a tech out to fix the problem the same day - in fact the same afternoon - that I called. The tech was delayed (through no fault of his own) by severe thunderstorms, but did keep the appointment as promised, even though had to work into the early evening - in the pouring rain. He was able to solve the problem immediately with a part from his truck. So, A+ for responsiveness & professionalism. Now the bad: the charge for the part, a capacitor, was $218. That same part can be purchased online for $20 - $30 or less, including shipping. I knew that I was being grossly overcharged; however, I was willing to pay given the vulnerable position we were in, the excellent responsiveness of the company, and the bad conditions under which the tech worked - heavy rain & after business hours. But, it doesn't leave a good taste in one's mouth. I would give this company an F for price but for the fact that they seem no different than their competitors - I had a similar prior experience with a different Triangle HVAC company last fall who wanted to charge me $120 for a failing capacitor for a furnace (which I declined, and subsequently ordered for $13 and installed myself) So, a C for price. The companies claim the price is so high because they guarantee the part for a year, and because they have to absorb the cost of salaries, inventory, vehicle, insurance, etc. I can understand that, especially the possible value of a guarantee. They deserve to make a profit, and I could understand a markup of 50%, maybe 100%. However, a markup of 800% + seems exorbitant, and to be taking advantage of consumer vulnerability & ignorance (although now you know better - please spread the word!). Since all the companies seem to do it, and there don't seem to be a lot of consumer complaints, there is little incentive for them to change. <br/> It seems that capacitors in HVAC units are: a common point of failure, fairly easy to recognize if they go bad, cheap & easy to find online, & easy to replace (with the appropriate precautions). To avoid being placed in this situation in the future I plan to preemptively replace the capacitors in my units every 5 years (or to have the parts on hand to install myself to try to fix the problem should a unit fail). One saved service call/part charge will make any such cost & effort worthwhile.

My AC went on the blink on a Friday night in July in North Carolina. I called first thing Saturday morning and they told me it would be the afternoon before someone would get here. They arrived when they said they would. The repairman, Carl, was very friendly, efficient, and professional. He had to replace the capacitor and he showed it to me and compared it to the new one he had in stock on his truck and I could see how it had gone bad. I was just so grateful that they could get here the same day I called (on a weekend) and he was in and out in 20 minutes so I think that was a great outcome!

We were in process of finishing our basement and needed to have HAVC installed. We got few quotes from companies on Angie's List. Comfort First Heating & Cooling was one of them. We were so happy to see the big deal on Angie's List could save $725. We decided to go with them, even their quotes was not the cheapest one. So, we bought the coupon. The company called us, said they could not honor the coupon since the quote was the lowest they could go.Seems to me the big deal is a gimmick to lurk new costumers. They would give higher quotes to the costumers if they knew the costumers want to use the coupon. So what is the big deal?

Comfort first was sent to my home through a Home Warranty Maintenance Company that I have a contract with. When the technician arrived, it did not take me long to realize that he was not comfortable with troubleshooting my AC zone system especially when he had to call back to his shop on several occassions for troubleshooting advice. His diagonisis was a bad circuit board due to an overloaded electrical circuit. I was very leary of his diagnosis because my AC in zone 1 was still working spratically and I never had any circuit breakers trip. The next day Comfort First contacted me and informed me that my Home Warranty Maintenance Company denied my claim due to diagnosis of a bad circuit board attributing to an overloaded electrical circuit. We were told by Comfort First, that the retail cost of the circuit board was $975.00 and that they could repair ou AC unit for us. The next day I went up in my attic to retrieve some information off my airhandler and control panel for my AC system when I noticed that the side cover was off the air handler, covers off control panel, vent damping boxes, and cover screws lying on the floor. I was extremely angered over the unprofessionalism and shoddy work of the technician. I went to other vendors and found that the retail price of the circuit board in question ranged in price from $100.00 to $150.00 and Comfort First wanted to charge $975.00. After 9 days without ac and in a dispute with my Home Warranty Maintenance Company, I bought in another contractor for a second opinion at my expense. The contractor found that the water in the float trap was backing up to the safety float switch and cutting AC system off as a safety precaution built into the system. Contractor cleaned float trap out and AC system has been purring ever since. Total cost my contractor, $178.00 VS $975.00 plus labor with Comfort First and AC still would not have worked.

I was very pleased with the professionalism of the technician, and the fact that he did not try to sell me something I did not need.
Description of Work: He checked my heat pump/AC unit as I had been having some intermittent problems with correct air temp. Because the technician could not find anything wrong, he told me to call if it ever happens again. He did not try to sell me something I did not need, which I really appreciate. He said their company has 24/7 service, so they would be able to come out if a problem occurs.

Al Harmon came to our home and did a proper load calculation for us. (My wife was impressed with his thoroughness and professionalism.) Based on the load calculation results Al recommended a modest upsizing from a 3 to 3.5 ton gas pack. He worked with me on cost and matched a better price I had received from another local installer. I needed the unit installed before an upcoming graduation party at our home, and Al got their crew out on a Sunday to fit us in (original target was a Saturday install, but bad weather put them a bit behind.) Their crew was courteous, professional, and hard-working and we are pleased with the results. Their office staff kept us informed along the way and were easy to work with.

The provider provided a four hour window in which they were there within the first hour of that window. David, our technician got right to work after explaining what he was going to do and offering a maintenance plan. He put our system in the company's database which will allow quicker servicing if needed in the future. He noticed that our system was 1 pound low on Freon and filled it without hesitation or extra cost. He explained that since this was the first time I've had it serviced, (new home, moved in June 2012) that the system should not be low. He further explained that it is possible that the system was not fully charged upon installation. David recommended that if the system is low upon our next service that we look at having a leak search test done. He never pressured us to have anything extra we didn't need. He was very professional and knowledgeable and answered all my questions to my satisfaction. Great service by a great technician from a great company, highly recommend.

My only problem with them is the wait time when I call for an appointment. I have had to call three times to have them return (nothing that was the technician's fault) and while I realize spring is a busy time, I had to wait between 5 and 20 minutes until someone came to the phone!! Normally I would just give up, but since they did my initial service, I decided to stick out the wait.
