No one wants to spend this kind of money on manufacturer recommended service, but for my car it is imperative to replace the timing belt after 60,000 miles. The price was very fair compared to the dealer and other estimates I gathered. They were extremely professional, followed procedures, told you what they would do, then did what they said they would do, when they said they would do it. They even gave me a free loaner car while my car was at their shop. Dutch and the boys were practicially perfect! I'm very pleased to have found a mechanic I can trust. A & M will be my family car service provide for as long as I'm in the south Charlotte area.

The shop tested our van and got back to us within about 4 hours about what it would cost to make the vehicle driveable (and safe to drive - they informed us that it was not, without repairs). We determined that it was not worth the repairs. The shop charged us just for the time to check it. We were very impressed with the friendliness and professionalism

Called Dutch on Monday, took it in Tuesday morning, he called with a diagnosis by mid-morning and it was fixed by the afternoon. He explained the problem and gave me options with recommendations on the repairs. As has been my experience in the past he always takes the time to diagnose the problem so only necessary work is performed. I'm sure many other shops would have replaced the compressor and dramatically increased the cost. The A/C now works better than I ever remember it working.
Description of Work: A/C stopped working due to compressor clutch over heat and failure. Replaced compressor clutch hub, coil, and pulley as well as cooling fan clutch.

My engine light came on over Thanksgiving weekend. I was somewhat new to Charlotte and found A&M Auto Service here on Angie's List. They were closed but I called to leave a message. Dutch returned my call even though it was a holiday. I told him what I was experiencing, he cautioned me not to drive it any further and set me up to bring it in the following Monday morning. His team thoroughly tested my car to be sure the alternator was the issue. Once that was verified, Dutch explained what needed to be done, gave me a fair price (Ford Escape alternator's are notoriously difficult to change), and even offered to give me a ride to the mall so I could grab lunch while the repairs were made. I was so happy with the service I received that I have taken my car back to him for regular maintenance. I'm so pleased to have found an auto service provider that I feel I can trust.
Description of Work: Replaced Ford Escape alternator originally. I have since gone back to have regular maintenance servicing.

I picked Dutch from Angie's List and he was very upfront and unlike Tire Kingdom, Firestone. etc., he doesn't try to hustle additional business by trying to sale additional services. His integrity and quality of work is excellant. I feel that I finally found a mechanic that I can trust at moderate prices.

The overall experience was very positive. Upon my first contact, Dutch was helpful and willing to accommodate my schedule. He gave me an exact quote of how much the total job would cost. He gave me to opportunity to go check with other companies although I declined. It was a low-pressure interaction. He was thorough in explaining my car's overall condition to me. He gave me advice for how to extend the life of my breaks. Hopefully, 2+ years from now, I will find that information paid off. The service was completed in a timely manner.

It was the day before Thanksgiving, I called several shops to try to get an estimate and see if they could fix the problem on my 2000 Lexus RX300. Dutch answered the phone, took the time to explain what it could be and how he would go about repairing it. He told me what I could expect and the type of diagnostics he would do. He said he would not do any work unless we approved. He explained in detail the diagnostic report stands by his work and the light has not been back on since. Overall I felt very at ease with him. My brother also owns his own repair shop out of state and I am very leary of taking my cars to a "stranger". Dutch made me feel comfortable with his work and ethics. I will definately go back if I need more repairs.
Description of Work: My check engine light keep coming on. Another shop tried but did not fix the problem and turned off the light. They did not have the diagnostic tools so the light came back on after we took it on the highway. The problem was my OEM air filter needed to be replaced.

Dutch is a straight shooter - you can't ask for better from a mechanic. He wouldn't work on my faulty A/C unit because the weather right now is too cold to get an accurate assessment. It's that kind of integrity that is going to convert me from a new customer to a long term customer.

I had to car towed to A & M. They worked on the car and could not repair their mistake. When I went to retrieve the car, Dutch went off on me. He would never have gone off on my fianc?. . He blasted me when I had the car picked up by AAA by saying that he did not have the time for me or my car, that he had already done work for free and he had paying customers. HE SAID - NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED. Can you believe that? He totals my car and then tells me he did a good deed because he attempted to fix it. I am not even sure he tried to put any effort or time in it at all, once he realized his mistake he talked down to me the entire time he worked on my car trying to confuse with techno mumbo jumbo. Finally, he left the car in pieces. not even bothering to put back interior panels. My response to Dutch is his incompetence is now my problem. I would not, will not, and could not recommend A & M to anyone. Response to Service Provider Comments: I'm glad Dutch believes that cars with 120,000 miles or 14 years old don't belong on the road. That's partially why he received the rating he received. Question Dutch -- if it wasn't your fault why would you spend over 10 hours working on a problem you claim you never caused. Altruism isn't your strong suit please don't say it is. Claiming you felt sorry for her is absolute nonsense. In real terms -- you tried to fix a problem you know or believed you may have caused. As for not going into the passenger side door. That's the truth my friend. Sorry, but I don't ride with her every day. It was two weeks later before she went in on that side. Are you calling me a liar too? I don't care about your 20 + A ratings or anything else. You're not as good as you think you are. I'm certain that I'm not you're only dissatisfied customer. Just the only one who subscribed to Angie's list.
Description of Work: I had a problem with my transmission module. A & M put in a rebuilt one. A & M reset my engine codes. When I got the car back it ran ok but within two weeks an alarm that I never knew I had went off and I could not start my car. A & M said it was not related to the work they did -- however prior to them resetting my engine codes the alarm never went off. Oddly, A & M did two weeks of car diagnostics on a problem they deny having created. Ultimately, I had to junk the car because it could not be fixed for less than 2,000 dollars.

Response from A & M Auto Service
Modern cars can be incredibly complex vehicles with multiple electronic components and literally thousands of feet of electronic wiring. These complex systems can be intimidating, even overwhelming for the vehicle owner when electronic component failure occurs due to the potential high cost of repair or replacement of the faulty component or components. Such is the case with this members girlfriend: she became overwhelmed and then incensed when she learned that her vehicle was going to cost more to repair than the vehicle was worth. Some people deal well with bad news about their car, they recall that all components have a designed service life and that all electrical or mechanical components will ultimately fail, nothing lasts forever. Some people, however, do not deal well with such news. They feel the need to blame someone else for their problems. They rant and rave, distort the facts and lie to cover for their refusal to accept the truth. In this case, since we had completed an unrelated repair to a Transmission Control Module (at a cost of less than $ 375.) about three weeks earlier, the problem with her alarm system, was, in her mind: our fault. Follow the lack of logic here: If three weeks after having your hair cut, you have an tooth ache, do you blame the Barber because he was the last person to touch your head? Or is it likely that something else caused the problem? A reasonable person would likely concede that the alarm problem may indeed be a separate issue and would ask to see proof. Proof readily available for review at my shop. Wouldn’t it have been in the best interest of truth and fairness to ask to review this proof ? I repeatedly offered to show this information to her, but she declined. I initially received a call from (the members girlfriend) after she tried to gain access to her vehicle by unlocking the front passenger door. In the brief conversation that ensued, she revealed that this was the first time that she could recall unlocking the passenger side door and the alarm sounding. Her first question was “Can you disable an alarm system?” Please note, she was not interested in repairing the problem, only disabling the alarm and to this end, she emailed me what she believed to be a method of disabling the alarm system. In retrospect, this should have been my first clue that trouble was ahead. I asked that the car be towed here for evaluation as people often times make incorrect assumptions about the true nature or underlying cause of their cars problems. During several phone calls, she made it frequently known that she was unable to afford the repair to the car if it was in excess of a couple of hundred dollars. I felt badly for her and I foolishly volunteered my time on nights and weekends to evaluate the car free of charge and devise an appropriate solution that would repair the car correctly instead of focusing on “bypassing the alarm“. After many hours spent tracing and troubleshooting electrical circuitry and by using diagnosis by exclusion methodology, I arrived the conclusion that nothing short of control module replacement would repair the car correctly. After relaying the unfortunate news that the vehicle was not worth the cost of the components needed to complete the repair, I asked what the plans were for the car because there were two lower dash trim panels that I needed to install if the car was to be brought somewhere other than a salvage yard. I was told that the car would be scrapped and therefore the lower dash trim panel needn’t be reinstalled. There was no charge for any diagnostic time..none. Even a cursory review of my 29+ positive reviews (including two Superior Service Awards ) made prior to this baseless, false, libelous report and the A+ rating that has appeared since this bogus report was filed reveals someone who genuinely cares about the service customers receive at this facility. Time and again, note is made by customers of the technical proficiency shown and time spent in explaining complex technical concepts. It is my sincere hope that those who take the time to read all of our reviews will recognize this bogus review for what it was: The angry, frustrated response of an immature, vindictive young woman who refused to accept the truth: that her car was fourteen years old, had over 120,000 miles logged and had reached the end of it useful life. After going over an asphalt ridge in our development, we lost traction and anti-lock brakes. This was not serious, but we wanted it fixed. I was very impressed with my initial phone contact with Dutch. When I explained what I needed, he scheduled me for an appt the following week. When I mentioned a thumping noise when turning, he imediately made time for me the next day. We left the car for the day and all repairs, including the brake pad replacements (after a phone call to get permission) were made by 5 pm the same day. Dutch is very knowledgable and took the time to explain everything he did and the consequences if they were not done and even gave us test run. For the Nissan, he was upfront and said the system was fine (I had it replaced at a dealer a month earlier), but there was a tiny leak around a flex pipe I had installed at another auto shop. I went back to that shop and had it corrected. If Dutch had not mentioned this, it might have gotten worse and I wouldn't have known it.
Description of Work: Repaired the anti-lock brake/Traction System hub and replaced all four brake pads on our 2006 Buick Rendezvous. Ran Smoke test on evaporative system on our 2001 Nissan Altima to check for gasoline odor while idling.

I found out about A&M Auto on Angie's list, naturally. Dutch was great! Along with his staff. I first got a tour of the facility, which was great. I had oil changed in 1 car, then had Dutch trouble-shoot and repair a second car. Since everything went so well, I even had them work on my mother's car! Great shop and people. You need to use their services! Dutch ended up getting all of my business in one week! But I will be back for all of my car needs or services.

Another repair service told me I needed a front wheel bearing. I checked Angie's list and found A&M Auto in Pineville for a second opinion. They discovered the problem was a loose nut on the axle which produced the appearance and symptoms of a bad wheel bearing. This saved me money, of course, and is the type of event that makes Angie's List so worthwhile. It is so pleasant to run into this type of simple honesty. Dutch explained what they did and was a pleasure to do business with. He is honest and very straight forward and I really like that. I've found a great place to have my car serviced.

The clutch in my Ford Truck had been making noise for a few weeks when it started to not disengage at times. I called A&M and took the truck in the next day. Dutch called that morning with options depending on how long I planned to keep the vehicle and how much money I was willing to spend. I had them do all of the recommended work and it was completed by the next afternoon. When I picked it up, Dutch explained the work performed and we took it for a test drive. ONLY PROBLEM WAS THAT WHEN WE DROVE THE TRUCK HOME, THE NEXT MORNING WE NOTICED THAT A REAR WHEEL COVER WAS MISSING. WE CALLED A & M AND THEY STATED THAT THEY DID NOT SERVICE THE REAR WHEELS. THIS IS TRUE BUT THEY HAD TO TAKE THE REAR WHEELS OFF BECAUSE THEY ALSO GAVE ME A QUOTE ON DOING A REAR BRAKE JOB. THEY STATED THAT THE REAR DRUMS WERE NOT COMPLETELY GONE YET, BUT DID NOT HAVE MUCH LIFE LEFT. SO APPARENTLY THEY HAD TO TAKE THE WHEELS OFF TO KNOW THIS.
