The Carrier system we had installed in 2006 was problematic from the beginning. I spoke with a friend who is an expert in the Ac business in Florida and he recommended May Tag as they have a 12 year warranty. A builder friend in Murphy recommended Aand A, owned by Trent and Bridgette Abling. Trent came out to our home in Murphy and evaluated our needs. He agreed to speak with my friend in Florida about the pros and cons of straight AC/heat unit vs. a unit with a heat pump (which has many more parts).
My Florida AC expert later told me that he was extremely impressed with Trent's knowledge and his plans for our new system. They discussed SEER and tonnage issues, settings for when the heating coils engaged, code requirements, and electrical concerns. In particular, Trent stated that in lieu of just cleaning the existing copper lines connecting the compressor and air handler, he would replace them. The reason being that after removing the Freon 22 from the old system, if any trace was left behind, an acid would be formed and could result in corrosion in the lines or coils resulting with leaks. The new piping was included in his quoted price which was very fair based upon what my AC friend in Florida told me. My buddy further commented about the new lines saying, and quot;He really knows his stuff. He 'owns' the system for the first year (warranty/labor) and new lines insure no acid problems as well as any unseen problems with the old piping.and quot;
The two installers were punctual and also very knowledgeable. They also asked permission to bore a new hole through the foundation (there is a crawl space under the home and the air handler is underneath the house. The aforementioned piping goes through the foundation wall connecting the outside and inside components), The reason being hat the original installer had cut a rough opening through which he ran the copper lines and electric. It was a tight fit and could potentially cause abrasion to either the piping and/or electrical conduit. They buffered the area around the wiring in the existing hole and installed smooth walled 2and quot; pvc conduit through in the new hole through which the new piping went and sealed all with caulking. The result was a very neat/professional looking pass through which protected the piping from the ragged edges of the concrete.
The technicians advised us that our current wiring to the heating coil was insufficient for the new 10 KW coil as the old unit had a 5 KW coil. I was shown how they had (simply) disconnected one of the coils and how easy it was to connect it at a later date when we had a new proper gauge wire installed by an electrician.
The installation was completed in the time stated. They technicians cleaned up the area and were very neat.
Another important consideration is that many manufacturers only warranty their parts for five years, and not longer, if the homeowner and/or installer does not register the new unit/components at the time of installation. This is one of the reasons that we went with a new unit as the original installer of the Carrier system never told us this and we were looking at approximately $2,400 to replace the air handler coil ($1,000 for the coil - wholesale cost, $700 labor, and $700 for 11 pounds of R-22). The owner of Aand A, Trent Abling, stressed the importance of registering the components and his company handled this for us to insure that it was done properly. By registering the components, the warranty went from five years to twelve years. My friend in Florida also warned me about the registration issue and told me that many installer in his area in Florida fail to tell their customers about this necessity. Needless to say, this is a huge concern to homeowners.
Our experience with Aand A was great. We had many conversations on the telephone which was answered either at the time of the call or shortly after leaving a message. All members of the company encountered were professional and courteous. I highly recommend them.
