Working with this man was a horrible experience. My husband and I are both elderly. We had just recently moved to this area so we had no HVAC contacts. He took advantage of our friendliness and gratitude for coming on the day before the 4th of July when it was very very hot and humid here, for which we gave him a $25 tip. He cheated us because he knew he could, because we knew nothing about air conditioners, because we were elderly. Who knows why he cheated us? He behaves very strangely and mumbles to himself, expecting the client to understand that he is talking to the client and not to himself. We would never recommend his services to anyone and we would advise them to avoid him at all costs!
Description of Work: This man, Dennis Sparrow, cheated us. He charged us $85 to come out to confirm that we needed a new air conditioner and that we already had a perfectly operating natural gas furnace: all we needed was a new air conditioner. He quoted a price and gave me the model number he was quoting on. As he was leaving, on the day he installed it, as I was filing the paperwork I noticed that the model number he had installed did not match the model number he quoted. So I called him immediately. He said he had "just noticed" that he had incorrectly quoted us a price for a heat pump instead of a simple a/c; and he understood he owed us $290 back. It seemed appropriate at the time to just put that money toward seasonal inspections at $85 apiece and that we would see him again in the fall when he would come to do a fall check on our furnace (which he had not installed). Instead, he came by exactly one month later, in August, unannounced, saying he wanted to make sure the a/c was working correctly. He left 5 minutes later after saying it was working great. (He considered this 5 minute visit to be one of the $85 seasonal checks that would count against his $290 debt to us.) He got 3 houses up the road, I kid you not, turned around, came back and said No, he just realized the a/c is not working correctly. He ended up that visit by charging us $85 for this "service call" plus he said we needed a new thermostat for $200, all of which he expected to be paid for in cash that day. He could not figure out why the a/c was not working correctly but he said he would investigate and it could cost at least $400 to replace some part somewhere IF he could discover what was wrong but it would take several hours of his time to determine the problem. He was INCREDIBLY unprofessional! In the midst of telling us he just did not understand why the a/c he had installed a week ago was not working properly (and of course it did not occur to him that we had paid him originally for an a/c unit that worked properly and if it didn't, it was his responsiblity to make sure, at no further cost to us, that it did work properly), he started talking to himself about something written on an invoice from another client. Do not use this guy! He never gave us back the money he overcharged us, ostensibly by mistake, and he was terribly rude to us when we talked to him on the phone afterwards to inquire about what he had discovered when his did his "investigation" about what the problem was. Boer Bros came by and told us there was no problem with the unit and we had not needed a new thermostat-Dennis had replaced ours with an inferior brand and charged us $100 more for it than it was worth. Adding together the cost of the thermostat we did not need with the meaningless service call and charging us the price of a heat pump when all we needed was an a/c, we figure he overcharged us about $600 and left a horrible taste in our mouths about the entire experience.
