I really wish I could give EM Hardwood a great review, as I was impressed with Erick’s professionalism during the initial consultation and appreciated his friendly disposition during the project. But, unfortunately, I’m very disappointed in multiple aspects of the end result. Rather than listing every issue, I’ll go into detail on the two most frustrating problems – the Master Bedroom and the stairs. With the Master Bedroom, there are 5 significant visible defects where the wood grain is raised up compared to the otherwise smoothly-finished surface. The most concerning of these defects are 2 spots where filler was added after all of the sanding had been completed. In both of these cases, the filler is a very reddish color which does not at all match the Provincial stain on the rest of the floors. The difference is extremely obvious, and unfortunately one of these spots is in a very visible spot, right at the threshold between the bedroom and the bathroom. Erick said the difference in color was due to the wood filler absorbing the stain, but this doesn’t make sense given that there are many other spots that were filled throughout the house where the color matches very well. My best guess is that he used the wrong pre-colored filler in those spots after sanding was complete. And, while the other raised areas are less noticeable visually, the raised wood feels rough and uneven to the touch. Erick attributed the problems in the Master Bedroom to natural variations in the wood. I don’t buy that, because this is the only room where problems like this occurred and the floors were sanded perfectly smooth before the staining process began. My best guess is that it occurred during the “popping” process where alcohol and/or water is applied to the wood before staining to help the stain penetrate deeper into the wood. Maybe the alcohol was left on too long prior to applying stain? Given that these problems were not evident until after the floors were completely refinished, there was little that could be done to fix them once they occurred (other than re-sanding and refinishing the entire room which would be costly, time consuming, and reduce the number of times the floors could be refinished in the future). Regarding the stairs - before the work started I asked him to remove the caulk from the edges of each step before refinishing them, and he agreed to do so. When the stairs were completed, the caulk had NOT been removed and the step surfaces were noticeably curved upward on both sides where the edges meet the walls. Additionally, the stain on many of the steps was blotchy and also darker on the raised edges. I later learned from the contractor I hired to redo the stairs that the raised edges were due to over-sanding (pressing down too hard near the edges) and that the blotchy discoloration was likely due to not allowing the stain to dry sufficiently before applying the polyurethane. I expressed my dissatisfaction to Erick and - after a long discussion - he eventually gave me 2 options: 1) him redoing them (with the caveat that he wasn’t confident I’d be happy with the results because he felt I was being overly-particular), or 2) refunding me $500. I chose the $500, only to find out later that it will cost me $1000 to have them redone correctly by another contractor. I’m left with the extra cost, hassle, and the likelihood that the end results - even after having them redone -won’t be as good as if they were done correctly the first time. So, in the end, I spent nearly $15,000 on hardwood installation and refinishing to be left with noticeable defects that are highly visible and difficult and expensive to remedy. I recognize natural variations in wood are normal and don’t expect perfection. However, I do expect consistently good workmanship and excellent results when I invest this much money to hire a professional. The Angie’s List reviews and our initial meetings left me confident that a high-quality result would be provided by EM Hardwood, but unfortunately that wasn’t the case.

We were impressed with Erick from our 1st meeting, easy to talk with, he listened to our needs, no pressure, and a very fair price. Every step of the way he was professional and courteous. Erick and David did a truly amazing job refinishing our hardwood floors, we could not be happier! Our floors look much better now than when they were new, he did a better job than our original builder. Erick's dustless sanding/vacuum system truly works, there was no visible dust. We highly recommend Erick!!

Everything progressed perfectly. On time, punctual, polite, & professional. Cleanup was immaculate. Brand new wood floors were installed throughout our home. They came out looking beautiful. They have held up to dogs kids and other surprises! We would highly recommend him for any installations or repairs you have.

Erick and David are amazing. We were Very impressed with everything they did. They dressed professionally, showed up and left exactly on time everyday, cleaned up after each workday and above all did a beautiful job on our hardwoods. Erick worked with us to make sure the color was perfect and that we were 100% happy. Erick also put in hardwoods on our stairs and refinished the railings to match. The price was perfect and he made paying him so easy. We plan on having Erick and his team back soon to remove our upstairs carpet and replace that with hardwoods. Absolutely the best contractors we have ever worked with.

I couldn't be more enthusiastic about this company. Eric came in and did a beautiful job. Dustless truly meant dustless, at least a very negligible amount, he worked with me on picking the color and blended two together to give me another option (the one I picked), put on the gorgeous matte finish I requested, and let me substitute a different shoe mold. He was timely, incredibly pleasant and accommodating, and the price was very fair. Wish we had started with him in the first place. He gets an A+++ which for me is rare. Just a perfect job working with someone who gets customer service like few others.

It’s not a fun experience when your home is flooded and has to undergo extensive repairs, but Eric of EM Floors made an almost unbearable situation bearable. EM Floors did the hardwood repairs, which included replacing damaged wood, then sanding and staining the entire first floor. In addition, Eric suggested we consider including the stairs in the repairs in order to have a more uniform look. While every other company promised to match both the first floor (newly refinished), with the stairs (existing 10 year finish), Eric did not over promise. He instead committed to matching both areas as close as possible, but could not guarantee that we would not be able to tell the difference once the work was completed. He provided an estimate to include the stairs, as well as the first floor only. After considering our options, we decided to go with EM Floors and followed their recommendation. We had a very aggressive schedule to get the work completed, and EM Floors was able to work with us to get the work done on schedule, while producing a high quality end result. The execution was flawless. The floors looked brand new with virtually zero dust. While there was definitely an odor from the stain, it wasn’t as bad as we expected, and it was gone within a week. Very high marks for quality, professionalism and expertise. Very good to work with Eric and his team.

Our floors look brand new and awesome!! Erick did an incredible job. We had a few places where there was water damage and another spot where renters had replaced the wood with a different color and you cannot tell where the issues were. Erick did dustless refinishing using dura seal stain in Jacobean and applied 3 coats of dura seal oil based poly to finish it up. He also replaced shoe molding and did steps under spindles as well as stair nose. Erick was very responsive and professional. We would definitely use EM Hardwood Floora again should the need arise and highly recommend this company to others!!

Erick and his crew were here exactly at the time we agreed, and work began immediately on the date they said. They were very professional responding to any questions we had about the process, and were spot on about the estimated time the floors would take to complete and if and when we should be off of them. As far as the actual refinishing process, it was very dust free for the sanding of hardwood floors. They ran an exhaust system that faced the front of the house and out the front door that pulled any dust that was not picked up by the sander's vacuum bags. So the dust overall was at a minimal which was very appreciated since one of us stayed in the house that night. They did 3 coats of polyurethane with low odor, but I would not recommend being in the house for that part of the process if at all possible. But I did stay in the house later that night a couple nights upstairs where we had no work being done. So the odor isnt too bad by late evening, but you can be the judge of that. All in all it took 5 days to complete the entire process, which is exactly what they said and we were back that same weekend about 24/48 hrs after the final coat of clear poly. And wow, the floors looked amazing after the whole process. It really made the entire house look new. Overall it was an excellent experience, and would absolutely use this professional company again, and highly recommend them. Job well done!

I couldn't be happier with the work done by Erick and son. The pre-finished hardwood floor that was originally laid when my home was build 10year ago had displayed several problems over the years with certain areas extremely noisy and others uneven. My goal was to salvage as much of the existing flooring as possible and have it seamlessly continued to another large room. Erick did a tremendous job in tearing out and correction a section that had subfloor issues. The remaining old wood was kept, the existing carpet in another large room was torn out and replaced with wood to match, all was sanded down and stained and sealed to provide produce one cohesive floor. He even refinished a massive winding staircase with multiple landings and a couple dozen steps to match. The transitions from wood to tile/carpet/fireplace were handled better than I could have imagined. He's the only person I'm calling in the future should I have similar needs.
