Window Outfitters came to my house, measured all my windows and provided me with a cost estimate by window. This enabled me to choose the right combination of storm windows so I could have them replaced in affordable groupings over time based on greatest immediate need in certain rooms vs. cost. The work was done while I was not home, which was okay for me - no access to the house was needed to replace the storm windows. I plan to have Window Outfitters continue my storm window replacement for additional rooms this year.

Response from Window Outfitters Inc
We believe this to be a bogus report! We use an electronic lead tracking system that covers both our e-mail and phone systems. After checking our 2009 files, we found no record of contact from the member either via the internet or the telephone. We were also unable to find any record of a sales call on him in 2009 by any of our sales staff. We do not use techs to measure windows on sales calls; that measure is done by our sales personnel. We are in business to sell windows and we generate leads to sell the windows. When a lead comes in we follow up on it. We take a great deal of pride in our Angie's List relationship and we do our very best to communicate with all leads we receive. The member names no individual from our company that he talked with and I find it rather strange that a job completed in April of 2009 is just now being addressed in January of 2010 by him. We do not doubt that he is upset with some company, but unless he can give more specifics, we do not believe that company is Window Outfitters. I am respectfully requesting that this report be removed from my companies’ record unless he is prepared to give the specific date the call occurred and the name of the individual from Window Outfitters who called on him. Considering that they were replacing windows in the winter it went very well. They only took two hours to replace the picture window so we didn't have to deal with the cold air. They worked with large bushes that would get in the way while they replaced the bedroom windows and did any excellent job. They found siding in their warehouse that matched my siding which I did not expect. They cleaned up after themselves so that there was no construction mess left for me to clean up.
Description of Work: They replaced 4 bedroom windows, a large picture window and took out an old air conditioner and patched the wall both inside and outside.

The title of a book is the best description for my experience: A Series of Unfortunate Events. It starts out in May when I got some bids for the replacement of windows over the kitchen sink and our deck doors. Brian came out and talked about a couple of options for us and he seemed knowledgeable and professional. We were a couple of weeks away from leaving for a 3 week vacation but I wanted to make sure we could get our order right after we returned because we were holding off having our deck painted and remodeling the kitchen until they installed the new windows and door. Brian did not think that was a problem since orders usually take 3-5 weeks. When we returned from vacation we had to deal with our yard service because they accidentally applied Round Up to our yard and killed it. I called Brian and told him to go ahead and bring the door and windows so that I could at least have that to enjoy. He informed me that the order was not in and that there was a 3 week delay. However, he gave me an estimate of six weeks to get our order. That didn't quite add up so I asked him exactly when our order was placed. He was not able to readily find that information and said the order was placed the day after Joe had been out to measure. Since that wasn't a specific date, I called the manufacturer to ask them about the delay. The woman I talked to said they did not have any back orders. Needless to say, I was quite upset at hearing this and called Brian back to tell him what I was told. He said the person I spoke to did not have it right. He said he had no control over this delay because it was on the manufacturer's end. We had ordered these windows just before the deadline where the manufacturers were required to have stricter energy standards in order to get the tax credit. My husband and I were worried about this because of the delayed order but Brian assured us that we would not be adversely affected by this. Brian offered my husband a price adjustment on the doors to help make up for our troubles. The next order was back ordered as well. The windows came in and were brought out to install without the doors. The inside of the window was just a bit short compared to the original window. The installer, Greg, said he could either add a small piece of wood to the bottom of the trim to cover the opening. Otherwise, he would have to mud the space that was exposed. I asked him to do the latter because I did not want the trim to look inconsistent. I had to paint the area where he filled in. While the men were still working, I heard our trash hauler pull up. I had placed a special service request (which I pay extra for) because I had items that would not fit in the trash. I wanted to make sure they took everything and when I looked out of the front window I noticed the guy was throwing in the old windows which had just been removed. The windows should have been hauled off by the installer but instead were left on my trash pile. I later spike to Window Outfitter owner, Bob, and he told me that should not have happened and he'd reimburse me the cost. Finally, the doors came in. The woodwork was stained and the doors were brought to the house. I received a call from Brian after the installers pulled up with the doors, to ask me which side the sliding glass door was supposed to open on. The opening was on the wrong side! Another order had to be made with yet another 4 week turnaround time. The doors were installed at the very end of September. On the plus side: Everyone was always courteous and the workmanship is great. The windows and sliding glass door look beautiful. Joe handled the door installation and it is an amazing improvement over the original. The stain match was done by Jeremy and he did a phenomenal job color matching the new wood to 17 year old woodwork. Everyone at Window Outfitters was very decent but I would like to have seen more follow up to let me know of the progress of each series of orders. I felt I was always making the call to find out the status. But each time I called, my call was returned promptly. I thought about giving this rating a B but I think "Fair" is a better fit.
Description of Work: Replacement of two side by side double hung windows in kitchen and installation of a sliding glass door to the deck. Old windows and original deck doors were removed and replaced with new Weathershield windows and door. Trim was removed and replaced with new trim stained to match existing woodwork. New no-maintenance trim was put on the exterior.

This evaluation pretty well sums up what happened. I disagree with the statement that we did not follow up with return phone calls. We made a lot of them! We stuck with this account to the very end and made sure every issue was completed professionally and to the homeowners satisfaction. To quote the homeowner "Everyone was always courteous and the workmanship is great. The windows and sliding glass door look beautiful. Joe handled the door installation and it is an amazing improvement over the original. The stain match was done by Jeremy and he did a phenomenal job color matching the new wood to 17 year old woodwork." It seems to me that this is what clients look for when all is said and done. I am very sorry that she would choose not to do business with us again.

Overall the installation went very well. It did take longer than planned, because it was discovered after the old windows came out the stucco and plaster was going to have to be cut. The old windows had the stucco and plaster applied over the edges. By the end of the second day all 7 windows were in and well insulated. On the third day the outside aluminum wrap was put around the windows and the 4th day the inside trim was custom fit. The orginial inside trim was just a little short, but the foreman was able after much looking to find the exact 1920's window trim from a custom millworks. I was insistant that the trim match the other window trim in my house. This necessitated spending extra money to find the exact trim and to custom fit it. I am very please will the final windows and how they look and operate.

The owner of this company and another man came out to our home to discuss new windows and siding on our home; this was over 5 weeks ago and they have never called us back. Since then we have had 3 other companies out to give us bids and not one of those three companies needed to come into our home to measure for windows, but the people from Window Outfitters came in and went through every room of the house ~ after seeing that it wasn't necessary for anyone to go inside the house, I am rather uncomfortable with the fact Window Outfitters spent so much time in the house and then never even called us back with an estimate of the work.

The member is correct that she was not contacted. We went through a company move during the month of June and her file was misplaced during the move. We are completely at fault for not calling her back. As far as the measure is concerned, we measure windows from both the interior and exterior. The interior must be evaluated in order to determine whether full frame replacement or insert replacement is required. We apologize for any inconvenience our lack of response caused the member. We have thousands of happy customers who will verify that this is not our normal mode of operation. Bob Davis, CEO/President

Poor communication, some installation done in darkness, most done in extremely cold temperatures, permit not provided until 12 days into job and only after special request, two windows significantly out of vertical plumb, one window missing a seal (still not supplied after 4 plus months), frost build-up and condensation in areas where it should not form possibly indicates poor cavity insulation, quality of interior trim so poor it had to be redone, damage to exterior siding, no manufacturer documentation provided except for nearly unreadable copy of copy of ...warranty.
Description of Work: Remove nine double hung existing windows and one picture window; install six insert replacement double-hung windows, one casement replacement window and three full frame replacement awning windows; re-wrap exterior frames and sills; install new interior trim on awning replacement windows.

The member is correct when he says that his installation was preformed in extremely cold temperatures. I personally inspected the installation and with the exception of the missing jamb seal, I do not agree that the quality of the work was not up to standards. In Minnesota, when the weather reaches below zero temps there is always the possibility of frost build up on windows. The windows were trimmed out properly during the initial installation. The member decided he wanted them trimmed out a different way after we trimmed them during the installation and re-trimmed them himself. We removed his vinyl siding around the windows in order to properly install the windows. Due to the cold weather, one piece of siding was damaged, but it was replaced with a spare piece that the member had in his garage. A new jamb seal for the one window is being provided to Mr. Pearson. Robert E. Davis CEO/President

Every detail went well from the estimate to the final door closer adjustment. The people at Window Outfitters are extremely professional. I am very please with the quality of my door, the superb installation including the resolution of the problem with the door closer.
Description of Work: Window Outfitters removed the old original 1927 tin covered door and wooden screen door between my garage and basement and replaced it with a high quality insulated door and a new heavy duty screen door. They custom fit the molding around the door. Cleaned up afterward. Hauled away the old door. When I wasn't satisfied with the way the door closer on the screen door was working. They came back and tryed to adjust it. When that didn't work they came back a third time and replaced it. I couldn't be more pleased with the service I received from them.

I requested a bid for a metal cladding around garage doors. After they came to view the project, I was sent an email with a bid of $600. When I decided to move forward with the project I asked for color sample of the project and also asked if they could do the project for less than $600. They came out a second time to review the project. This time they told me they had under bid the project and that it would now cost $800. I told them I wouldn't be doing business with them.

WE MADE TWO TRIPS TO PROSPECTS SITE TO EVULUATE THE PROJECT. OUR INITIAL QUOTE WAS BASED ON A STANDARD GARAGE WRAP. AFTER HAVING OUR INSTALLER EVALUATE THE PROJECT ON SITE DURING THE SECOND TRIP, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE TRIPLE GARAGE DOORS WERE NOT A STANDARD DOOR WRAP AND THE TIME AND MATERIALS INVOLVED WERE BEYOND THE SCOPE OF OUR ORIGINAL QUOTE, THUS THE PRICE INCREASE. AFTER DISCUSSING THE PROPOSAL WITH ME, I TOLD MY SALES MANAGER TO HONOR THE ORIGINAL QUOTE. HE DID LEAVE A MESSAGE FOR THE PROSPECT THAT WE WOULD HONOR THE ORIGINAL QUOTE, BUT OUR MESSAGE WAS NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED. BOB DAVIS, CEO

I had planned to replace my windows this year and siding next year. I called Window Outfitters and was very impressed with their work with us on the windows estimate. They said they also do siding so decided to get a quote from them on the siding. Again I was impressed with the way they explained my siding options, pros/cons of doing the windows and siding at the same time, and especially their help in choosing colors. We'd still be comparing color options if it was up to my wife and me. I decided to do the siding this year with them. They used many of the same crew that replaced my windows. They were very professional, worked their tails off, gladly answered any questions I had while they were doing the work, cleaned up well after each day, did a high quality job, had multiple walk arounds with me and on their own to look for things to fix and to be sure all seams were caulked, overall it was an excellent job. They also followed up a couple weeks after they were done for another walk through and to see if we had any questions/concerns.

They thoroughly explained my window options, including manufactured, grills, why I should consider glass block for my basement windows, colors, wrapping, staining, etc. pointing out the pros and cons of each option and gave me their opinion when I asked for it. The owner of the company stopped by during one session to make sure things were on track and once I decided to go with them, the crew chief also stopped by to explain what would happen and when. They did an excellent job, very professional crew, thoroughly cleaned up, caulked, answered all my questions and followed up a couple of weeks later to be sure everything was ok. I was very pleased with their work.

Description of Work: We replaced two storm doors with doors which were very high quality and with the drop down internal screens. We had a wait several weeks from the time of ordering to arrival and a longer wait for a fiberglass sliding window for our bathroom, but the products are very high quality. Dave is the salesman and made a special appointment to show us the products available and sent someone out to measure for the doors and window. The installation team were superb. They aim to please, very conscientious, ensure things are done to customers satisfaction and clean up after their work and then some. Great group of folks. Highly recommend. Over all it went quite well. There were a couple of minor issues after the installation which were addressed and taken care of to my satisfaction. No problem with clean up. They had a dumpster parked in my driveway for the old windows. I noticed one of the neighborhood kids climbing on the side of it and breaking windows with his hands. This has the potential of being a major safely hazard. Understanding that "kids will be kids", and he was having fun, I think that maybe the dumpster should have been covered to reduce some of the temptation to play with the windows and possibly be seriously injured/cut.

It was great to work with Bob Davis (president) and Dave Herstad (sales manager). We had received a bid from another company that pressed us to sign on the spot. In contrast, Window Outfitters presented us with a bid good for 30 days and allowed us to think about it. The other company tried to sell us (cheaper) slider windows, but Bob pointed out that those would destroy the look of our colonial home. The other company tried to counter with a bid for double-hung windows, but couldn't match Window Outfitters. All old windows were removed and new windows were installed in one day. They returned to finish the wrapping and doors on a second door. The crew was considerate and keep us informed about each step. Cleanup was spotless. We had some questions and Bob and Dave came out promptly. The gentlemen who installed the door was incredible. The new door is twice as heavy as the old door, but it now glides shut with a touch because of the precise installation. My new motto is to never sign anything a pressure salesman puts in front of me until I have a chance to get comparison bids from Angie's List. When we get ready to fix our garage floor we will definitely call Window Outfitters.
Description of Work: Installed Great Lakes Bay Shore Vinyl windows: 13 double-hung windows, one large picture window, one small picture window. My house is 35 years old, but I'm almost twice that age. I no longer wanted to perform regular maintenance (and replacement as needed) on the home's original wood windows and cedar plank siding. I wanted to minimize ongoing maintenance, and to give my home a fresh look at the same time. As a spruce-up bonus, I figured that I could also use a new garage floor (the existing one was cracked and crumbly); and a more glamorous front door. Based on Angie's List recommendations, I picked Window Outfitters as my main contractors for all this work. I'm very glad that I did. Bob Davis (President) and Dave Herstad (Sales Manager) of Window Outfitters are highly competent; were helpful in explaining my options; and successfully orchestrated a complex work schedule, despite having to cope with my access street being simultaneously dig up for new sewers, water mains, gutters, curbs and compete re-surfacing. The work crews performing the varied elements of the project were, without exception, skilled, hard-working, helpful and cheerful. Please note that the high cost of this project reflects my personal preference for top quality materials. The James Hardie siding, for example, is expensive and much more difficult to install than aluminum or vinyl, but it is uniquely durable, beautiful and it comes with a 50 Year warranty which should see me out! (By the way, the all-Russian crew from Northwestern Siding proved to be first-class workers.) Window Outfitters perform their own work in the areas of their special competences, but employ sub-contractors for certain other jobs (in my case, for example, the siding and interior painting/staining). I prefer this approach, because I was able to hold Window Outfitters responsible for the entire project, and avoid any interface difficulties between different independent contractors. Window Outfitters perform that contract management role brilliantly. Overall, this entire, complex project went extremely well. I have no hesitation in recommending Window Outfitters to all my friends. Just two points to watch: [1]Read the estimates carefully. Window Outfitters made two minor errors in recording my requirements but I was able to correct those before work commenced. [2]If you are having Casement windows installed, be sure to specify which side the hinge should be on. You may want to specify "right" or "left", based on factors such as prevailing breeze direction, etc. Too many pluses from using Window Outfitters to mention all of them. I'm amazed how well they coped with the complete disruption of my access street, thanks to total road rebuilding.
Description of Work: New "Weather Shield" windows for entire home: $19,000, installed by Window Outfitters. Overall, the installation went very well. The company representative was in our home and we arranged for the purchase and installation of one sliding patio door and three casement windows. Schedule was set up and agreed to. There was a minor "person/computer" glitch in that the patio door was not ordered when the windows were. This resulted in a double installation, one for the windows, and then another for the door. We also arranged for the inside wood trim to be stained to match existent wainscoting. This was done very nicely by "Polo Painting." The only problem we had was the inconvenience of Window Outfitters having to come to our house for two separate installation sessions. The installers for the windows and the door were highly professional, were extremely courteous, and did a very good job making sure the installation was OK and everything involved with the job(s) was cleaned up.
Description of Work: One patio door was replaced. The opening for it was not a standard size. Window Outfitters reduced the size of the opening to fit the standard patio door we purchased. Window Outfitters also replaced three casement windows. One was a triple unit with the center unit fixed and the two outside units opening, the second being a double unit with both opening and the third was a single opening casement window.

They completed the work in two days. This included removing old windows, putting the new ones in place, doing the trim work, and hauling the old windows away. They worked a long day the second day to complete the work. They thoroughly cleaned after each day's work.
Description of Work: Replaced three over-sized sliding glass doors.

Jon, the person who sold me the windows, was very responsive and always kept me informed about the status of the project. It took about 4-5 weeks after I made the decision to go with this company to have the windows made and installed. The person who came to measure the exact size ended up not being the person to install the windows and this led to some confusion and further delays on getting them in. They are slider windows and they were not exactly how I had pictured them to look, especially in the lower level. Now that they are in and I have stained them I guess they are ok. The screens on two of the windows are not working properly and new ones have been ordered. Jon has continued to keep me informed all throughout the process and always has gone above and beyond to get issues resolved. The guy who installed the windows also did a minor repair on another window at no extra charge. The window manufacturer has a good warranty and they have been easy to talk to also.
Description of Work: I hired them to put in new window inserts and to wrap the existing trim around the windows on the outside. Several pieces of siding around the windows needed to be replaced as well.
