 + -1 moreJoseph Moss returned my call promptly and came out to estimate our driveway. He gave us what we considered a fair price, especially since we have a rather long driveway, and he accepted the Angie's List discount coupon. We weren't sure exacty when he could schedule the work since we had been getting rain almost daily, but they arrived within about two weeks of the estimate to begin removal of the old asphalt. The rain started again near the end of the afternoon, so they quit, but returned after the weekend to finish. The final paving was done within a week after that, and we are extremely happy with the result. The driveway looks wonderful, and we are quite pleased with how the whole process took place. We recommend ACT Asphalt to others based upon our good experience wth this company.
Description of Work: Asphalt driveway replacement, removed existing pavement, excavate & haul away; applied base of crushed concrete, allowing several days to stabilize, then paved over with asphalt hotmix & compacted with heavy duty roller.

 + -1 moreEstimate was set up on short notice and the sales rep was right on time. In fact, he was very nice about MY being late meeting him there. He told me that while they'd love the business, he thought we'd be better off not replacing the steps or the panel for now and suggested some very low-cost (hardware store) alternatives that would be smarter for us. So all in all a very good experience; we'd certainly look at them again.

 + -1 more. the workers and foreman were friendly and seemed thorough. the home office communicated well with me about when the work would be done. they were friendly and accomodating.
Description of Work: low bd to cut out a section of blacktop driveway that had fallen into disrepair. they did a good cut out of bad asphalt and then deepened the patch area so they could fill it to specifications (4 Inches). they rolled it and taped it off and that was that.

 + 0 moreVery well. The concrete and asphalt were very nicely done. They communicated the date with us and sent us expectations. They had three stages: Digging out drive, laying ACO system and concrete, and doing asphalt. It was all completed efficiently. They had some issues with the ACO drain system installation. They also cut our cable - not that it was their fault as it was buried outside the cable markings, and only 2" deep. I would have liked them to take care of calling our provider. I did feel like we had to take action at times - with the cable and drain issues - which in my estimation a more professional person would have been proactive about without prompting.
Description of Work: Excavated rock from drive. Installed ACO Drain system with concrete and tied it into new asphalt.

Driveway removal, basing, apron installation and final asphalt driveway installation completed in a week. The results look very nice. We are quite please. We had three bids and ACT Asphalt was the lowest, they used the thickest basing and offered a 10 year guarantee - best of any bid.

 + -1 moreI called the company last fall. Ed came out to look at the job. We were impressed with his knowledge and suggestions, but he never followed up with a written estimate. I emailed him directly in the winter. He responded that the web site was being updated and he would get back to me. He never did. I called the general number in March and no one responded. I guess they have too much business and don't need my job? This was a disappointing experience.
Description of Work: We called the company to repair an asphalt driveway that was sinking down in front of the garage. Also to remove a sidewalk to the front door and replace with stamped concrete.

 + 0 moreThe preparation and installation went well enough. We'll see how it holds up over time -- that's the key. The followthrough on some appearance issues with a concrete curing spray wasn't handled well and they forgot to come back and apply a concrete sealer we had paid for. They then came when it was cold and it looks like the sealer didn't take because it's patchy-looking and slippery in some spots. So, it started out good but turned into a typical contractor experience (disappointing).
Description of Work: Replaced an asphalt driveway and widened it for a 3rd car parking area. Replaced a broken concrete driveway apron (with asphalt) and a broken-up front walkway with a larger concrete patio area.

The problem I had with the company, was that on 3 different times I had called with different questions I was told by the salesman that he would get back to me by a certain time. All 3 times the phone calls would be returned, but 1-2 days later than time given. Because of this I decided to go with another company.

 + -1 moreI am very impressed by the responsiveness, quality of information, generosity, and professionalism of Joe Dalton of Asphalt Specialties Company. He responded quickly to our urgent need for expert background information on asphalt (driveway) paving, comparative estimates, and guidance even though he knew that his company would make no money from our request. My elderly mother's driveway was being paved by a group of individuals who were NOT associated with Asphalt Specialties. I contacted Asphalt Specialties because I was concerned about the price and quality of the work that was in progress. I was also concerned about the trustworthiness of the group with regard to their deceitful sales approach, vague estimate, and confusing company affiliation. Joe dropped what he was doing when I called and immediately provided typical industry price- and quality-ranges and asked questions to help me assess whether there was reason to be concerned. He drove out to quietly look at the work in progress and provide my mother his assessment of whether the work was adequate and appropriately priced. While my mother wishes she had chosen Asphalt Specialties instead of responding to the high-pressure sales pitch of the individuals who were passing through her neighborhood with a load of hot asphalt, she's grateful for the assurance from Joe that the driveway will likely meet her needs (even though the quality isn't ideal) and that the significantly reduced price that she was eventually able to negotiate is in the average range. Joe handled this situation with incredible generosity and sensitivity.

 + -1 moreCrew arrived on time. We went over the work to be done and I thought the job went well. The air temp was about 30 degrees F and I was concerned that it might be too cold but the crew chief said it wouldn't be a problem. I thought they did a great job in preparing the limestone base and laying the new asphalt mat. Only one minor problem: During the first year, I noticed some grass breaking through the asphalt along the edges. I called them and they came and fixed it by "flaming" or burning the grass (I wasn't present when they did this) although sometimes a small pock mark or indentation remained. However, the problem kept recurring except in different places, so I started spraying a vegetation killer (Roundup) along the edges and it seems to have solved the problem. I still wonder if this problem might have been a result of it being too cold which prevented the edges from compacting properly. They provided a 20-year quarantee along with a no-questions-asked, 2-year accident-protection guarantee (which they honored when a contractor's heavy tool left a mark on the driveway). After 5 years, the driveway still looks good and seems to being holding up well. I looked into having the driveway redone about 10 years earlier and had gotten a quote from ASC, so it was encouraging to know that they were still in business and is one of the reasons I chose them.
Description of Work: Removed old asphalt driveway. Staked out edges of new driveway. New 4" minimum limestone base. New 3" minimum (compacted) hot mix asphalt mat.

 + -1 moreThey did a beautiful job. I've received many compliments from neighbors. I'd never hesitate to recommend them to anyone. The staff was very professional and it as easy to work with. From the sales person to the scheduler and to each and every worker I had contact with, I was very pleased.
Description of Work: I had a new and widened asphalt driveway installed. They tore out the old driveway and hauled it away. Then they installed the base. A few days later someone came in and installed the new curbing. The following week they came in an paved with asphalt. About a month and a half after I paid this company in full, I got billed again for my last installment. When I called them, they wanted proof that I paid, so I had to send them copies of my cancelled checks. I've never had this before with any vendor, and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Some improvement in record keeping would be in order.

 + 0 moreThe new driveway looked great and seemed to be beyond an adequate job. But in 2005 when I asked A.C.T. to honor their 10 year guarantee they gave me an interpretation over the phone that the problem was probably not covered by the guarantee. Probably, and it was left at that. My real estate agent, shortly afterwords, informed me that if the basement wetness/ water "border barrier" problem was not remedied it would be hard to sell the house. That was in 2005 before the real estate market took a hit. The more clarity I gain on all this chain of obscurity and deception the more apparent it seems there was a lack of business ethic and very clearly a conflict of interests.
Description of Work: In 2000, the neighbors' on my immediate north side encouraged me to install a new driveway contracting Asphalt Specialties ( A.C.T.) (so they would get a referral fee). An asphalt/concrete driveway was paved with an 'accident protection/sealer' and a '10 year guarantee'. They were paid in full on completion. In 2002, the very same neighbors installed 'immense timbers' as a barrier border OFF the joint property line (my lawn/ their driveway) to help remedy their alleged property settling problem. I would have posted a legal protest but shortly after this border installation, I suffered a medical trauma that should have ended my life. Three years later- after skeletal rehab- i devoted considerable time to the 'wetness' I saw in my basement (after I saw a torrential fall thunderstorm) and, concluded that the neighbor's barrier border, because of it's 'dam' configuration, was the cause. The summer after that fall thunderstorm I called Asphalt Specialties to inquire of them, i had a hunch, what their involvement was in the barrier border. They denied any involvement even after 3 different phone calls. This Spring, my litigation against the barrier border with my neighbors was dismissed from court by an interpretation that my complaint was beyond the statute of limitations. Now, the summary memorandum provided by the defense clearly identifies A.C.T, Specialties Companies/ Asphalt Specialties Company as the firm hired to help in the installation of these "barrier borders". Also, in my 10+ hour deposition, the defense attorney, as well indicated that A.C.T. has no complicity in the "barrier border" installation.
