The estimate seemed very high so I didn't have the work performed. I haven't received a quote from a 2nd source so I'm not sure if this is standard for the industry. However, they reimbursed me for the big deal cost.

This Spring, the same area in front of one garage door has sunk. A large crack has appeared in the corner section adjacent to the sunken area. I have called Asphalt Specialties three times over a two monbth period trying to arrange a meeting to discuss the problem and what can be done to fix it. This was a $5000 job, not a small expenditure for me. They have ignored my calls and by so doing are apparently refusing to honor their warranty. My next step is to contact the Better Business Bureau and write to the State Attorney General's office. I simply do not know how to get their attention. Stay away from these guys!
Description of Work: Had Asphalt Specialties replace my entire drivemway. An area near one garage door sank within one week of the job completion. I called and they returned and place an overlay on top of the origijnal work.

Response from Asphalt Specialties Co
This year the road restrictions were lifted later than normal. With the late start we have just started doing service calls. This problem will be taken care of this year. Warranty work is scheduled when we are installing a job near by so there is not as much travel time. (Member name removed) we apologize for the confusion. Please email me personally and I will take care of this for you. mitch@asphaltmn.com Thank You ACT Asphalt Specialties

We are still waiting for the service. We had a very late snow season and now are getting alot of rain. The work was done in late June. We were satisfied with the result. One week after the sidewalk was completed a corner broke off, but someone came out very quickly and repaired it.

There was a weather delay after the prep was done, so it was about three to four weeks to completion. The person using the Bobcat to dig out the old paving said that the ground was somewhat soft and should be dug deeper at later date and fill to be added, but that was never done. After completion, no vehicles were parked on it for about a month. When we did the tire left a small depression when it sat there for a few weeks. We never contacted them about it.
Description of Work: We purchased a half-off deal from Angie's List for the job. They removed the old asphalt driveway, dug it deeper, added a layer of gravel, and after a period of time, laid the new asphalt.

That went very well. They main thing that I remember is that they did this in the the fall and they did the lower half of our steep driveway. The manger came out and said that they could do it better, and that they would be back in the spring, free of char. We then had them back again to do the top of the driveway too. About 4-5 workers came out to do this job.

Overall, it was a very good experience. I purchased a Big Deal ($99 for $500 worth of driveway) and then contacted them to schedule an appointment to get a quote. The person responsible for scheduling the quotes was either having a bad day or was confused on the geography of the northern metro area as they had trouble figuring out whether the estimator would be able to make it to/from C*** Rapids, Oak Grove, Rogers, and one other place in the given time slots. But we got it ironed out and I set up an appt with the estimator (Joseph?). The scheduled time was 12:00. He called at 11 asking if he could come earlier and we agreed on a time. Joe was friendly and professional. He measured the current driveway and the proposed expanded size and provided an estimate within 30-45 minutes. I mentioned that I was going to get additional estimates. Not a problem, there was no hard sell, he just gave some pointers to consider when looking at other bids, thickness - starting vs. compacted, etc. I got two other estimates (they all came in at about the same amount) and decided to go with Asphalt Specialties. One other company came in at about the same price, but in order to honor their 10 year warranty, I'd have to have them do the sealcoating on a schedule. So, basically, I'd be paying $700 for a 10 year warranty. Interestingly, the info packet from Asphalt Specialties pretty much doesn't recommend seal coating, but if you do, they provide information on the type and make-up of the seal coat to use. After agreeing to the quote, Joe came back out and did a more detailed diagram for the job. I then paid a deposit of 1/4 the job, I waited to be added to the schedule. Originally, 2-3 weeks was quoted, but due to weather and the fact that they schedule jobs by the area (for efficiency, they wait until they can do a couple jobs in the same general area) it was a little longer before they came to tear out the old driveway. This wasn't a problem for me since my only requirement was to have it done before winter. The crew that came to tear out the driveway were polite and professional. We have a sprinkler system with heads that were in the area of expansion. They were very careful and actually unearthed part of the line, which made my job a lot easier when it came to moving the heads. The crew put down and packed the base and let me know that it would probably be at least two weeks before it would be ready for asphalt because the ground under the old base was really soft and needed additional time to firm up. After about 6 weeks the ground and base were finally firm enough. At about 4 weeks, the crew came out to install the asphalt, but they inspected the base and we all agreed that it would be better to wait since it still wasn't sufficiently solid. The crew that put down the asphalt were very polite, professional, and great to work with. We were first on the schedule, so they came in the morning, got right to work and were done after a few hours. The driveway looks great and the crew really took time on the details. The only negative comment I have is that our water shut-off valve is in the middle of the driveway and the additional cost for the cover was not included in the original quote.

I purchased the daily deal, thinking I was getting $500 of work for $99 for a driveway re-seal. It turns out that the "deal" was actually for an entirely new driveway RESURFACING which costs upwards of $2000 and the so-called deal was simply a reduced rate on 25% of the whole cost. So my savings would have been $400 on $2000, not $500.

The Concrete pad was done to specifications and was fine. The Front steps were more complicated, though they came out looking very nice. When we were getting the estimate we determined, based on the salesperson's advice that completely excavating the front steps was a better quality and more durable option than partially excavating and and pouring over the existing front steps. Doing new front steps also allowed us to use the Angie's list Deal. Our estimate/contract indicated full excavation of the front steps to the footings and use of a bobcat for excavation. When the job was in progress, I saw that the steps had not been fully excavated (about 6' clearance for the new concrete). I asked the workers who told me that they couldn't excavate any further with the jackhammer they had brought (NOT a Bobcat), and that they were going to pour over the partially excavated steps--The very thing which had been billed to me as a second-rate solution. The job had been completed by the time I got home so I did not have the workers halt their work. Nobody from the company called to explain to me why they were doing it a different way than was indicated in my contract, so I called my salesperson to talk to him about it. The story now changed, and pouring over partially excavated steps was just as quality a product as fully excavating and pouring new concrete. He had the job boss follow up with me, and I asked that they refund us the difference between the job that we paid for (complete steps) and the job that was done (partial steps). He said he would do the math and get us a little bit back, but that the difference was not great. Several weeks later, I had heard nothing more from the company and I followed up. A week after that, still nothing, so I had my husband follow up. Finally we received our small refund. The end product looks nice - the steps are about half an inch shallower on one side than the other but you don't really notice. I was disappointed by the lack of communication during the job when things were not going as planned, as well as the promptness of service in making a mistake right.

Sales rep came to take a look at the job in May after we purchased an Angie's List coupon. We agreed on a July date for the job, but it had to be postponed a couple times because of the hot weather. We're mostly satisfied with the end result, but the crew could have been a lot cleaner than it was, and the details aren't impressive (edges that aren't straight, sloppy sides).

On August 20th we requested a bid and scheduled an appointment fro the 23rd. They cancelled the appointment the day before because the estimator was injured. We rescheduled for the 28th and was told after the appointment an estimate would be emailed. The estimator was on time however extremely rude and unable to answer any questions. We never received an estimate. On September 16th I contacted Temir Emberson in customer service and inquired about the estimate. Still waiting to hear from them. As of today (September 23rd) sill no response. Not that we would ever use them. Be warned- if they treat pre-customers like an inconvenience it makes you wonder how they will treat you after they have your money.

I received a very reasonable, prompt quote from Rich for the repair work on my driveway apron. A few weeks went by. During that time, the scope of work had changed. It became a larger job. I called Rich and left a message for him saying we were moving ahead with the project using his company, but I wanted him to come back out and re-quote based on the change in scope. When I didn't hear from Rich after four 4 days, I called their main office. They said they would get in touch with Rich, who would then contact me. I never heard from anyone again. I was very disappointed in their lack of response. For whatever reason, they obviously didn't want to do this job.

Mike Schultz came out to take a look at our asphalt driveway. We originally planned to just resurface the driveway. However, Mike recommended a complete driveway replacement given the condition of our driveway. Work proposal seemed thorough, but price was on the high side (even with the Big Deal) vs other bids.

Joe did an estimate on replacing our driveway and adding an additional turnaround. Worker were friendly, professional and work was completed in a short time. They took special care to reinforce with cement by the garage pad that had not been done when the home was built. After living with a cracked, weed ridden eyesore, the new driveway looks wonderful. We will diffidently give a good word for this company. Joe told us that there might be added costs such as cement for the pad. Have extra money available for incidentals, and unforeseen additional work. 1. We had a water shut-off in the driveway that needed to be extended, otherwise would be covered over by the new asphalt. 2. Extra two feet added to the turnaround. 3. They took special care to reinforce with cement by the garage pad that had not been done when the home was built. Negotiating with the company on cost was very reasonable.

I understand they need to maintain a profit on the job, but this is pretty blatant bait-and-switch. If what they meant was $1100 for $1500 work of work, that is what they should write on the Big Deal. Angie's List was very understanding and promptly gave me a refund. Thank you Angie's LIst.
Description of Work: I wanted a cement step for the bottom of my deck. Estimator came out quickly, and gave me the estimates of the work I wanted at about $950. When I mentioned the coupon for $100 for $500 worth of work, he said there is a $1500 minimum. I said that was not listed on the coupon, showing it to him. He said that was their policy. I called the next day and the woman on the phone said the same thing.

I chose this vendor in part because they got high marks on Angie's List and they offered a coupon, "get 500 dollars of product for 100 dollars" on Angie's List. I couldn't help but wonder if they marked their price up before the discount based on other bids I received, but I went ahead anyway. I think their coupon offer attracted a lot of attention because they were 3 weeks late starting the job. Rain could also have been a factor. The end result looks good, we'll see how it holds up over time.,

Everything went well. With the wet weather, other jobs were pushed back, which delayed the concrete work a bit, but that was expected. The concrete apron looks good, I am glad we added it. I will contact provider in the fall when the flower garden is spent. Asphalt is 400 degrees and would destroy plant life close to driveway. Overlay of asphalt sounded (which is a little more than 1/2 the cost of complete redo) like a viable option. Although there is no guarantee with this procedure, it should last a couple of years until we sell our property.

The services provided by Asphalt Specialties Co. did not turn out too well. The guy came out and was very polite. He did an estimate for me. He said he'd have it to me by Monday. It was on a Thursday that he came out. On Monday, I didn't get anything. I thought, "Okay, he's probably busy." So, Wednesday, I ended up calling the company, because I couldn't find his business card. They said they'd give him a message and I didn't get a response back until late Thursday. So, almost a week later, I got the estimate. I had a question about it, so I emailed him back right away. Because the deal that I bought from you guys, I asked, "Is this the price with the $500.00 off or do I get the $500.00 after this price?" He emailed me back Friday, saying that he had already taken $300.00 off, so he'd give me another $100.00 off, and that would be the same as getting $500.00 off, as the Deal. I was like, "Well, $400.00 is not the same as $500.00." But I waited and I got estimates from four other people and I just felt that I wasn't getting very good customer service if he wasn't honoring the deal. Their price was quite a bit higher than other people's, too. He was punctual for the original appointment but bad for the rest.

I'll probably call them this afternoon to set up a contract. So I can't say anything what their work was going to be like or anything like that but at this point the bid that I got back were remarkable. The lower bid from these people was 5500$ but I wanted a wider driveway so that will going to cost me an extra 1500$ and I'm gonna go with that. Well, my driveway is 200 ft long so it's huge and I've got a 30 by 45 square ft parking area so the square footage is 3500 sq ft or something it's the normal. Anyway I talked with 3 other company that are on Angie's list and their bid ranged from 10,500$ to 12,600$ to 15,600$ I talked to the company whose bid is 15,000 on the job and I said to them, "Look, you're over twice of expensive." and they said, "Yes, we understand, we can't touch the price of the deal. The problem is, we do basically normal residential thing and the typical kind of thing where you got 30 ft and maybe a double car garage between you and the street. We're not up for doing what is effectively commercial job you know 3500 sq ft of asphalt is coming into a point where effectively commercial job, we do residential maybe a couple of hundred sq ft of asphalt. We are not set up to handle it." I understand were not gonna be able to make that bid. But anyway all of the companies that I've talked with were professional, nice people to work with, and like I say, the thing that surprise me was just an enormous range in the bid that I got back. One other piece of information that I want to share with you is that when I was talking to these guys, One of the questions they always ask is, "Where did you hear about us?" and I told them that I got them from Angie's list. They said, "We're now doing 40% to 60% of our business through Angie's list.
Description of Work: I need a new driveway installed and I contacted 4 different companies that were all top rated out of Angie's List and I've got a bid back from them. I'm gonna be going with one of them, the company called Asphalt Specialties Co and they've already given me a 300$ discount so I don't think I can get much more than that. They have given two prices and I actually go with the more expensive one.

They did a good job but half of my walk is brown and half is grey. The new stuff instead of grey instead of trying to make it brown or telling me it will be two different colors. I think they should have told me what a difference it would be and they did not. It looks dumb. But they did a good job.
