Richfield Blacktop & Concrete

The estimator was on time, and carefully detailed out the job, and answered all of my questions. They excavated early in Oct. - the Bobcat was always in the driveway and never on the grass. The excavation plus setting the forms only took one full day. They then poured the concrete in one morning just 4 days later - I was worried all this would not get done in time before really cold weather set in, but everything went very well. I was always given notice before they were to arrive. After pouring the concrete, they carefully cleaned up the grass around where they had worked. They sealed the concrete about 3 weeks later. The concrete work is beautiful. It has solved the drainage problem near the garage where the apron was falling apart and in many pieces prior to the new concrete, plus they corrected the slope so that everything drained well. My new front step solves the problem of a crumbling original step. All of my neighbors have complimented the beautiful job that was done. My house is definitely enhanced by the look of all this new concrete.

The people who performed the work were excellent, the quality of the work was excellent and I would absolutely use them again. There were a few problems; the estimator was vague and seemed to be unsure of himself. (subsequently I learned that he no longer works for them). Some concrete was splatter on the garage trim boards; Richfield sent out someone to clean it off at no charge to us. There was a misunderstanding about grading next to the garage; they came back and back-filled material next to the garage as requested. Since they were here they also volunteered to fill in material next to the blacktop at no charge which was VERY NICE and unexpected.

Their estimator (Jerry) came out and carefully took measurements, explained the work and the fact that they stand behind it with a 5 year warranty, and provided a detailed estimate. They agreed to hold our deposit until they were certain they could perform the work this season. When certain, work began at our earliest convieneince. Excavation and grading was on a Thursday (Nov 6) and with sufficient equipment, material and workers to get it done in about 6 hours. The excavation crew (headed by Chuck) was very meticulous in getting the area marked and graded as per my last minute requests. Here is a pic of the post-excavation work. As you may recall, we had an early winter storm on Sunday that left us with 2-3 inches of snow. The owner, Tom, assured us that they would be able to do the paving and continually informed us as to when the pending work would occur. They came out on Tuesday, raked up and gathered the snow and loaded it onto a dump truck, so the surface was clean for paving. Paving (headed by Dan, who is Chuck's brother) occurred Wednesday, again plenty of resources, and took about 4 hours. The final result was quite impressive. Here is a pic of the final result.

The person who did the estimate was very professional. He was willing to take the time to answer my questions and offer me various options without a lot of pressure. We had never hired someone to do paving before, and I really appreciated their website www.richfieldbacktop.com because it explained the steps involved so I would understand what would happen and approximate timeline. They called us each step of the way to tell us when they were coming the next day and answered questions. The person who ripped out the old driveway helped us with one little irregular part of where the water flows in rainstorm and was very friendly. The crew who put in the new driveway did a very good job. Also, in the estimate, there was one thing we weren't sure if we would need when they ripped out the old driveway ("cap" fill in by garage) so they put it in the first estimate and when it turned out that we did not need it, they remembered to credit that on our final bill. Overall, we were really pleased and we really enjoy the smooth new driveway--not even a bump when the car goes in and out of the garage.

Of all the bids for an asphalt driveway, this was the only company that would not give me a price unless I met them at the site. It was a waste of time. The work provided was the same as other bids and almost double the lowest bid. When I stated that, he reduced the price to 3600. The back and forth felt like I was dealing with a used car salesman. Some of the best craftsmanship I've received on Angies List has come from the smaller companies that have fewer reviews. (This one had a lot of reviews.)

Ultimately, the company did quality work. However, I was disappointed in their responsiveness. On the day of service, I stayed home from work to meet the foreman and crew. No one showed up and know one called me. I finally called and spoke with the owner who was very apologetic and explained that someone was suppose to call me. They did show up the next day on time and completed the work.

It was a 10 minute meeting. He took a look at the job and wrote me up an estimate but I'm still considering my options.

They were on time, on budget, and worked with us in a very responsive manner. We had a situation arise in which I wished Richfield Blacktop to come back out after installation. We needed them to check a spot where it appeared that a tree trunk was protruding. While this was not the case, we were very impressed with the responsiveness, accountability, and communication as they attended to our question/request. We only wish every contractor would be as helpful and responsive. I would highly recommend this vendor for your project whether residential or otherwise. The owner of the company took the time to talk with us and handled the situation to our satisfaction.

The initial communication for the quote seemed fine, but because I have never done this before, I did not know what questions to ask. It turned out that I made an assumption about what the quote included, and it was just for the garage slab and not for the apron or driveway that we needed. The problem was that I did not realize it until the garage floor slab was already done. The owner worked closely with us to figure out how to fix the issue and also worked really hard to remedy it. I truly appreciated all the input and help on his part, and I know for the future what kinds of things I should be checking on. Just make sure, if you have never had concrete work done, that you have them talk you through what the quote includes so you know ahead of time what you are getting. Furthermore, the workers themselves were hard-working, punctual and courteous. The only other issue was that the initial form for the slab was put in 2 or 3 feet too close to the property line, did not pass inspection, and had to be redone. There was some miscommunication between what the inspector/city told me that they had told Richfield Concrete and what Richfield Concrete said they were told by the city. I have no idea what happened, as I have never done this before and part of hiring the company was them getting the permit, but it did cost us an additional $1000 (talked down from $2000) for them to fix it. However, Richfield Concrete fully made that up with how much they went out of their way to help with the apron and driveway. I do think the communication issues were an anomaly for this company. The work they did was prompt and looked good. Also, the willingness of the owner to work with us to fix the issues was beyond what many other companies would have ever done.

Last year I had gotten three estimates to have a new concrete driveway apron installed to replace a sinking asphalt one where the driveway abuts the garage. I ended up delaying having the work done until this year. I called Richfield Concrete back to ask if they could provide a refreshed estimate. They offered to do the job with the same estimate as last year. I signed the estimate and sent the check for half of the job and scheduled the work for the next week on Friday. It ended up raining too much so we had to delay to the following week. The workers came on Wednesday morning about 7:30 and were done in about 4 hours. They removed the old asphalt and installed a concrete apron with rebar and microfiber. They guys who did the work were very nice and professional and the apron looks great!

the new driveway is much higher quality than our old one, both in terms of materials and workmanship. where we once had uneven pavement, bad joins and weird drop offs, all is now smooth. i no longer have to gun the engine to get into my garage; i just glide in. the crew was efficient and polite, and worked more quickly than i imagined they would. i would definitely recommend richfield blacktop to others.

After I posted a review saying I hadn't heard back, Tom called me immediately and apologized and came out right away and gave me a bid immediately.

AMAZING! They return calls immediately...they come out for estimates quickly...they communicate and provide plenty of information along the way of how to prepare for the new drive and maintain. The best part is....they truly respect their customers time. Not only do they show up on time...they either come a little early or on the dot...which seems unheard of these days with contractor no shows and delays. Will use again when the need arises!!!

There was a slight misunderstanding initially because my neighbor and I share a driveway and both of us wanted our driveways replaced so there would not be seams between our two properties. When they came to do the work, my neighbor and I were able to clarify the estimate was for both duplexes. They did a good job last fall and we have a 5 year warranty, so they came out and repaired a couple of spots that ended up with tire marks after a hot day. All in all, it has been a good experience.

Excellent job. Communicated with me throughout the process of scheduling and the work. Did exactly what they said they would. Found a problem with the foundation and needed to add additional base, called me in advance for permission and had the additional cost amount for me. Driveway looks great.

Existing concrete driveway and garage floor were replaced with new concrete. Extra foundation fill (couple tons) was needed to fill the voids before the new slab was poured. So far, no pop-outs and it looks great. I got one other estimate that was priced slightly lower, but they were able to accommodate my minor changes and the unexpected foundation issues with ease.

They did extensive block work to fix problems we had.

I can honestly say, this is the first time that a contractor did what they said they would do on time and within budget. Based on the reviews, I had high expectations but Richfield Blacktop exceeded my expectations- not easy to do. Great company and great employees..

Both crews (concrete and blacktop) were very professional and performed great work. It was obvious that each crew had experience with its members and worked well together. I am very pleased with the preparation and execution performed by all.

They had a really good bidding process. It was fast, fair, and flexible in working with us. Initially, we wanted to just do the garage floor and later do the driveway. Tom gave us really good recommendations of why we should do the garage floor and the driveway at the same time. He was able to give us a reasonable price so we felt comfortable. We almost doubled our initial estimate, but we were happy with the results. Everything went well because they were efficient and fair.

The work was performed on schedule and according to the estimate we had been given.

The concrete and asphalt work were done according to plan, and look beautiful. The quality of the work seems excellent. The work was done according to schedule. Richfield Blacktop and Concrete were flexible and worked to accommodate my schedule. They hauled away all of the old concrete and asphalt and cleaned up after the job. I was satisfied with the work and have not complaints. I would hire them again.

They had to put in a lot of extra expertise to extend the driveway over a marsh area. They were great at problem solving with us to ensure we had the kind of driveway that we wanted. Tom, the owner, is the one who really worked with us the most. They did a wonderful job! They made a lot of accommodations and changes for me. Their cost was very reasonable.
