I was so uncomfortable with the gutter that on final payment I asked Bill pointblank that what if I was to have any more trouble with the gutter, would someone come out to clean and/or fix it. Because I told him that I had gotten the leaf guard gutters so I specifically would never have to go up on a ladder myself to clean them out. He assured me that there would always be someone to do that. A year went by. The following spring rains were flowing over my gutters but not into my gutters. I tried to call the gutter subcontractor. He would not return my calls. I called Leaf Guard; a company I thought was the manufacturer of the gutter. Bill and I would always talk about Leaf Guard when discussing the gutter so I "thought" they were the company. But apparently Leaf Guard was not the company. And then I remember Bill saying that I would get a similar product but it would not be Leaf Guard. I looked through my papers and found that the manufacturer of my product was Leaf Proof. Now I learned an interesting lesson from this: If you're a company called Leaf Guard, your product "guards" against leaves in your gutters. You're a Wisconsin company with a pleasant lady manning the phones, and they're ready to send someone out at a moment's notice to help you with any gutter problems. Also, Leaf Guard has it own team of installers... they don't subcontract. But if you're an Omaha, Nebraska Company called Leaf Proof (subsidiary of Eran Industries); you "prove" leaves do exist. And "proof" of their existence is most likely in the gutter you purchased from them. And the only contact is some guy in Nebraska with a cell phone which he sometimes answers. Also, the guy that answers isn't the guy you want, but he will pass the message on with your phone number. And whoever he passes it onto never gets back to you. So, anyway, when all this happened I did contact Bill, and Bill was incensed that his subcontractor didn't do a better job on my gutters. Besides, he himself had to fire him, but he would not explain to me why he fired him. But when I reminded Bill that he was the contractor and so he was responsible for the overall problem. He agreed with me and then gave me a phone number to Leaf Proof out in Omaha. A place I had already tried, but later I tried again - all which proved futile. Then I told him that there was a big, gaping opening in the top cap where the gutter from the top roof met the gutter from the second floor. He told me that was necessary to act as a baffle to prevent the 2nd floor from getting overwhelmed during a heavy rainstorm. Later, a bird built a nest right inside the gap and water couldn't get through it anyway. I added a little screen myself to fill the gap (after cleaning out the bird's nest.) This year (2010) I removed the cap from the Leaf Proof gutter so the water could at least flow. I also found another bird's nest in
Description of Work: My advice to anyone getting capped gutters is doing use Leaf Proof, don't hire Bill. And you might want to even consider keeping your regular gutters and hiring someone to clean them out now and then. Bill Elsasser represented the company from start to finish. It seemed to me like he must've been the owner, because when I tried to reach the company independently I would only get him. He was a very friendly and good-natured fellow, but the overall experience with his operation wasn't very pleasant. I signed the contract with him at the end of June 2008. He said his outfit could start in a week. But I asked him to put it off to the end of summer when the weather would be less volatile (a suggestion of my insurance agent). When it got to autumn, I started to contact him about doing the work. But, he apologized, work from storm damage had picked up all over the place, and he would have to put the work for my house in a queue. Understandable. But when it started to get late in 2008, I kept trying to get a hold of him to see when it could be done. He kept telling me, "oh, next week". This became a common refrain. The promised week(s) would come and go and no workers. Then when I would contact him, he told me not to worry and that his team for my house just got held up at another project. But, still no work. Then for a week I couldn't even get a hold of Bill. I thought he had absconded with my down payment. I raised the issue with the umbrella organization that I had referenced him with in the first place, Service Magic. They, too, were having a little difficulty getting a hold of him. Finally, they did, and they said that they would have Bill call me. Bill finally did and then again convinced me the following week the work would be done. Surprisingly, the material was delivered, and I was hopeful. But then, still, the following week the work was not started. Finally winter came so I had to cover up the material on my front yard and move the stuff I could move to the garage. Bill finally admitted that they wouldn't get to it until spring. Surprisingly, when spring did come. The work was done. And it looked like a pretty good job. But the roofers had forgotten to install the ridge vent Bill and I had agreed upon. I told Bill, but he said, no, they had to install it because the vent was delivered to my address. Well, I said, see for yourself when you get around to it. When he finally did confirm, it was too late. I didn't want things torn up to install the vent. It was removed from my itemized costs. The gutters were later installed--capped gutters to prevent leaves from clogging it. Now the gutters become a big bone of contention. Right from the get-go, I told Bill that from the first spring rain I could see them leaking between the gutter and the facia board. He sent his gutter subcontractor out, and it was fixed, momentarily.
