We got many bids from other companies. They were the most reasonable, most honest, and they were just amazing. They were timely, efficient, professional, & knowledgeable. They were excellent with the installation & clean up afterward. The gentleman who did the install itself was great.

Everything is working fine.
Description of Work: I needed a repair on my water softener. The repairman arrived within the time promised, was friendly and very helpful. He had the parts ready when he came as they had an idea of what was wrong when I had described the problem on the phone. I do not know about the price as I have not received a bill yet. I know I was quoted about $70 for the first 15 min. And because he had the part ready it did not take more than 15 min. The repairman was patient with my other "stupid" questions.

If you're looking for a professional job - - keep looking. Bottom line is that I never had soft water with their install. This is the second time I decided to go with a small business and the second time I've been extremely disappointed. I am beginning to wonder about the calibre of businesses advertised on Angie's List and how well they are screened. After phoning the City of Chanhassen to check on the validity of statements from Peterson, I discovered that they'd never taken out a permit! True, they only need a "water softening" license, but the city needs to check that when they issue a permit. Peterson's didn't even know they needed to get a permit from the city! Also, I discovered that a piece of equipment they'd installed was not to code (the piece where the water empties into the floor drain). The installer from the new company I hired took only about an hour to set aside the Peterson equipment and do the new install. I believe I'll be sticking with the bigger names for awhile. Again, I was impressed by Mr. Peterson's attitude about everything. I believe he was sincere, but also believe he needs to hire employees dedicated only to water softener installs (not PT landscapers) who demonstrate a professional attire and attitude. Buyer beware! I was initially impressed by Mr. Peterson's attitude regarding my problems with his company's install job, but upon reviewing his response, I'm concerned regarding the necessity of his lengthy protests. Yes, I had expressed my dissatisfaction with my previous water softener company and had assumed that Peterson's would try their best to impress me. They obviously didn't get the hint. Also, I'm assuming that, after having worked for them 1+ years, they would've been apprised of A.J.'s work habits. He is a very nice young man, but not what I would consider to be professional. He needs much more experience and constructive criticism (as I had provided). This was not based on my assessment of his age, but by his actions. Mr. Peterson did admit that A.J. comes across as being a "hick". And I guess Peterson's did not appreciate my demeanor, as having served as an officer in the USAF. Sorry, but I'm direct. I do ask a lot of questions. I'm sorry if Peterson's found my inquiries to be insulting. Apparently they've never worked with veterans who, by their training, are demanding of themselves and others. As for the plumbing situation, the person who did the new install had the same situation to work with as A.J. did and it took him far less time to plumb. The new water softener company I choose mailed out the permit request 2 days after the install. Snail mail takes time. To be clear, I phoned the city on the Friday (3 days) after the install and they hadn't seen a permit request from Peterson's. I would still wonder why Peterson's seemed concerned regarding the permit request. Mr. Peterson said he was planning on sending his commercial installer out when the city inspector arrived. If A.J.'s so capable, why not just send him back? Also, I'm wondering why, if they'd had a more experienced installer on staff they just didn't send him out to do my install in the first place. They might have avoided all this trouble. I'm sorry that my review had to be something other than an "A", but hopefully they will treat this as a learning experience. I'm sure this situation would've been treated far more severely in a well-heeled area like Edina. "Hick" doesn't go over very well there.
Description of Work: I was dissatisfied with my current water softening company and decided to look elsewhere. I found Peterson Salt on Angie's List. I spoke, at length, with Michelle and decided to give them a try. I'd explained my unhappiness with my current water softening provider and assumed they'd do their utmost to impress me. I was severely disappointed. She sent A.J. (who looked to be about 17), their most experienced installer. He did remove his shoes, but, unfortunately, that exposed his dirty socks full of, yes, dirt and grass. I guess Peterson's also runs a landscaping business. He spent 3 hours, removing the existing unit and installing the new one! He was very cordial, though, and seemed to know what he was doing. When he left, it took me 1/2 hour to do a deep vacuum job to clean up the trail he left in my home. He also left a bit of a water mess in my basement. I phoned the company and asked the owner to come out and meet with me regarding my disappointment with their service. He was very nice about everything and seemed genuinely concerned about my unhappiness with A.J.'s job. I gave Peterson's equipment about 2 weeks and decided that it just wasn't working for me. I had hard water and it tasted bad. And then there was my initial disappointment with the install. I was also concerned regarding warranty issues. As they were a small company, how long would they really be around to deal with repairs and uphold the warranty on the equipment. I phoned Tom Peterson and expressed my further unhappiness. He said he'd have someone come out and remove the equipment and there'd be no charge to me for anything. That was very professional and the only reason I didn't rank them lower than a "C" overall. The guy they sent out to remove the equipment was also dressed poorly, with dirty clothes. Why do workmen think everyone enjoys viewing their butt cracks?! Again, another intense vacuum job after he left. I'd asked him to use a tarp, but he wouldn't. Also, he removed the salt from the brine tank to make it lighter to carry upstairs and put it into 2 empty salt bags. He said since it wasn't their salt, he wasn't removing it. I had to carry the 2 heavy salt bags upstairs and remove them to the trash bin myself!

Response from Peterson Salt & Water Treatment
We would like to respond to this member’s comments: We are very sorry that this member was not pleased with our service, but we are more than confident that this was an isolated incident. We do care about our customers and as a small company we do not have all of the bells and whistles that our larger competitors have, but that does not make us any less professional. In more than 20 years of business, we have never encountered a situation like this. If you look back through our reports you will find nearly 100 A-ratings, which we are very proud of. We work very hard to please all of our customers -- whether they are Angie's List or not. As for not pulling a permit, we do know that permits are required for water softener installations and we do pull them. Typically, our permits are pulled on Fridays so that we can do them all together. When the member called the City of Chanhassen it was only the Wednesday after her installation. Furthermore, the company she hired to replace our water softener (on 7/24/12) has not pulled a permit as of today's date, 7/27/12. We don't want to point fingers at this other company, but what we want to show is that it is a common practice in our industry to pull a permit after the job is completed. We also think it is fair to let you know that from our first dealings with this customer we were concerned by the overly critical way she questioned us on our business practices. Her hostility seemed to stem from a previous bad experience, but we worried that we were walking into a situation where it was impossible for us to succeed. It is difficult to convey a mood in writing, but speaking to this member was like being interrogated, and we had never even worked with her before. Some of her questions, we found to be insulting and irrelevant. We were asked how often our boss goes on vacation. She insinuated, quite rudely, that because we are a small company when Tom is gone she would be "out of luck." (Of course, this is not the case. We do have systems in place for when any employee is gone.) The member also wanted to know exactly how many employees we have and what kind of work they did before coming to our company. Several times she asked us if we are a professional company. This is a fine question (and yes, we are professional), but it was the condescending way in which the question was asked that made us apprehensive. Before we had even begun working with this member, she seemed dissatisfied. When we sent AJ to the member's home for an installation she was unhappy because 1) He looks young and 2) The install took longer than she thought it would. First of all, we do not feel it is fair to judge our employee's professionalism or the quality of his work based on his apparent age. AJ has been working with our company for a year now and we have been very impressed with his work. He came to us with several years of mechanic experience and is studying for his HVAC certification. AJ is one of the most polite and thorough installers we have on our staff and those are the reasons we chose to send him to the member’s home. Secondly, we explained to the member that part of the length of install was due to the fact that AJ had to fix some of the existing plumbing, which was at an angle that wouldn’t line up to our softener. All of this was explained to the member after the installation when the owner of our company met with her in person.

We had used Peterson to repair our leaking water softener, and while they were here they were able to identify a "mystery tank" connected to the water system as a whole-house carbon filter. We'd never owned one before, so we didn't know anything about it. They explained it needed to be re-bedded with carbon every few years, and until we did that, they disconnected it so we weren't sending our water through the very old carbon which was likely full of contaminants. They explained our water filtration options and we were able to make the decision to continue using it. We called them and they came and took the tank to their offices to clean it and fill it with fresh carbon. AJ was great to work with, as always, and this work was done efficiently and effectively. This was our third experience with Peterson in the last 6 weeks and they have all gone extremely well. They are excellent to do business with.

Two gentlemen from Peterson came out within a week. They quickly identified a small crack up at the top of the water softener tank. Although the system was older, they said it was a good system and worth repair. They were able to remove the leaking tank and take it offline while still leaving the system running. They gave me the option of a refurbished used tank or a new tank - suggesting that a used tank would be less expensive and might also be an easier fit. They also had solutions on how they could retrofit the system to fit a new tank if the needed to. We wound up going with the refurbed option. They took the leaky tank back to their shop so they could reuse the resin and brought back the new tank ready to go. It was reattached and the system has worked perfectly since. What was a huge bonus to me is that they had the expertise to explain the system - which is a two tank unit and very different from any other we have owned. They walked me through its benefits and how it worked and that is great knowledge to have in our new home. They also had recommendations on what type of salt to use to keep it working at it's peak. This is a really great company - I'm glad to have found them.

We had purchased our new home and had a close date set on our current home when we finally acknowledged that the single-unit GE water softener was no longer functioning. Found Peterson through Angie's List and called to have it repaired or replaced. They were able to talk me through my options on the phone and I learned that our existing unit was of an age and quality that it was not worth it to repair. We talked about replacement, and they suggested possibly replacing it with a refurbished unit. This allowed us to provide a higher-quality tank with much more years of service at less cost than a new "retail store" tank. They were able to schedule this on a short time frame. The installer was prompt, pleasant and was able to complete the install even given tight physical space in the area. It was a great solution for us - we felt we could honestly tell the new owners that the new softener would provide them many more years of service than the one in the home at inspection. Peterson also suggested we leave the receipts, etc. with the new owners and should they have any issues or questions they could contact them directly. They were completely willing to stand by their work. Excellent company to do business with!!

We chose them because they were one of the best people recommended by Angie’s List. We were happy with them because they did a good job. The reports on Angie’s List gave us a picture that the person who owns the place did most of the work but that was not true in our case. We got someone else who was dealing with the job but he did a good job.

I called for an estimate. Received one over the phone. The plumbing was a bit higher then estimated because they had to bypass an outdoor water valve to avoid sending soft water into the yard, which is unnecessary and would cause the softener to cycle more frequently and use more salt. They arrived on time and completed the install quickly. They tied down all hoses and routed them well.

Peterson Water and Salt is an awesome company. What we appreciate most is their Saturday delivery of softener salt. They not only deliver it, but bring it into your basement and actually put it in your softener. The price is very competitive with other stores but without the hassle of loading it into your car, carrying it in, and putting it in the container. This is a service we will definitely use indefinitely.
Description of Work: Peterson Salt and Water worked on our water softener, which for some reason stopped working. It was fixed in a matter of minutes and was done professionally and in a timely manner. They also provide our water softener salt on a regular basis.
