After discovering a leak in our roof, we had 5 contractors come to look at our problem. Four out of the five recommended replacing the shingles with flat roofing materials even though the slope was just inside the legal limit for shingles. Turns out that was the way to go; when the shingles were removed, the felt underneath was soaked. Flat roofing is expensive, and there are numerous choices in material. The lowest quote was for rubber roofing at $3,500, and the highest was a 40-year material at almost $10k. We decided to go with Sherriff-Goslin's middle quote for a material that looks like a large, rolled out shingle with a water and ice barrier underneath. They showed up on time, did the work in a day, and came back the next day to make sure everything was good. When one of the downspout elbows was dripping, they came back out promptly to fix it, and when we realized the fix didn't work the next time it rained, they came out again and replaced the elbow. All the work was done on a signed contract, and the bill arrived about 3 weeks after the work was completed.
