I am a repeat user of Paul Scott Plumbing and have never hesitated to contact them if and/or when I have had plumbing needs. Unfortunately, my recent experience has me questioning their ethics and business practices. The recent job was to replace 3 toilets. When the job was requested I asked for a single plumber to do the work. Unfortunately they sent to technicians to my home. Although this would help install 2 toilets in half the time, it led to the 3rd toilet being installed with one plumber sitting there talking to the other. This result in an extra hour of unnecessary manpower I had to pay for. When the loiters were installed there was leaking from all 3 toilet. At this time both keep going out and sitting in the car to wait to see if the leaks reoccurred... this wen ton for about an hour. (2 additional man-hours billed). When the toilet appeared OK they left. Unfortunately, the leaking continued on all 3 toilets. They sent the same team out to address the issue. For this I was not billed. At this point 2 of the 3 toilets continued to leak. This was on a Friday. A different team was sent to my home the following Tuesday to check the issue (one again, not charged). It was at this time that the team disassembled and reassembled the tanks onto the bases. The kind plumber mentioned that the previous team did not install the toilets correctly and that if done properly it would have been done promptly. It was at this point that I decided to call Paul C. Scott for billing reconsideration. I was charged over $1,105 for the job... a job that Lowes would have completed for $624. I spoke with the Manager Mark who said he would give me an unspecified credit toward future service but that he would not discount the project since he had to send teams out there to fix the issue and that I was not charged for them. When I said those were to correct negligence he then said he would talk to the owner. After a week of not hearing from him I called the office. Mark told the receptionist to tell me that the owner is out and will not be back until next Monday. I doubt they will do anything. If you want a trustworthy and reliable contractor do not call Paul C. Smith Plumbing!!

I called twice to have them come back and adjust the vent/access pipe to the proper height. So far they have ignored me. The attached photo will show the height of the vent/access for snaking out the sewer. The $175 was in addtion to the $600 they charged me to replace 2 copper pipes behind my water heater. Although I feel the $600 is high, it was the estimate they gave me to replace any galvanized piping behind the wall, unseen. So the total cost was $775, but they did offer a $20 discount coupon. In retrospect, I wish I never called them.
Description of Work: I had Paul Scott Plumbing install copper pipes behind my Laundry room wall. This was the second time I had them work in this location. I had them install a water heater 2 months earlier, but water conntection at the top of the heater leaked. They said that if I had all the galvanized piping behing the wall replaced with copper, the leak could be stopped. They gave me an estimate of $600 to replace the piping and stop the leak I decided I needed the leaking to stop and also have them determine the location of sewer gas entering into my laundry room. So I called them back to replace the piping and find the gas leak. When Paul Scott Plumbing changed the piping, I was at work. They recommended that I have a trap installed on the laundry stand pipe in my utility room. They installed it for a price that I agreed upon over the phone. And while I was at work, they provided the installation. When I got home, they were gone and I found that the trap they installed was substandard because the vent/clean out access is too tall. In addition, it is made out of PVC and will crack if I try to use the vent/access hole to insert a snake into it for cleaning out my sewer. It also shakes back and forth, its not solid and sturdy.

Some issues---mainly price confusion, I was quoted $195 for the snake out and I asked if that included everything and the answer was yes. It turns out its $195 for the first hour and Tony did 80 feet(glad he did not have to go the full 150). There was also an issue with Tony calling me back(which Staci said he would) about the drain. The main backup was fixed by the snake out but if I let water build up a little and then drain, most of water goes out under ground but some goes out overflow pipe. Don't usually do this but just wondering if there is still a partial blockage which could present problems later on. I was also wondering what Tony would have done is he had found where my under ground pipe went. He spent roughly 30 minutes looking for it and that's what cost the extra money I had to pay.

Awful. The condo association cuts deals with suppliers and tells them the results they want. I had hired a reputable plumber initially and found that there was a break in the storm drain. Condo manager came over and saw it. NO action. Complained and then they hired Paul Scott Plumbing to "verify" the break. The guy they sent didn't even know the difference between the storm drain and the sewer line. Said the line is intact but he was looking at the sewer line. Unbelievable! My window was from 11:00AM to 1:00PM. SHowed up at 2:30pm; no call nothing.
Description of Work: Was supposed to identify break in storm drain. Live in a condo and the condo association is responsible for certain issues. i.e. outside plumbing. Every time it rains hard, I have water backing up into the house.

This dishonest contractor charged my mom $275 just to turn the water back on to her house after it had been blown out due to her extended winter absence. He was there for fewer than 10 minutes and all he had to do was turn one knob that she wasn't strong enough to do herself because she's 75. He totally took advantage of her and I'm furious! I just learned from my mom that last fall he charged her $350 just to winterize the water lines in her home. My plumber only charged me $100 and my house is three times the size of mom's. This company should be ashamed of how it treats its most vulnerable customers. Never, ever hire them!

It worked out but he just ended up scaring us to death about what you need to do and spend all this money so I mean the service was okay I guess but he just tried to say you guys need to do more work here and that was all. It was alright. I did not spend more than the $175 of the deal. They came out a couple of days after the purchase date. I don't know, it seems like whenever plumbers come out they're all pretty much the same, they just tell you oh we have to do this, you know, tare the whole yard up, it's just like a big speech about spending more money. That's just how they all are. Interactions were alright beside that issue, which is a big issue, it's alright, I mean, it is what it is, so if it's truthful that we need to do all this work, but you never know so that's the problem. They were able to use the camera and it was good.

Appointment was scheduled for 8:30 so I told work I would be late. Plumber called around 8:30 to say he was almost there but showed up after 9:00. Not a big deal. He showed and was not happy to be working and constantly left for cigarette breaks. Had to get a utility sink put in which didn't seem like that big of a job so I surprised it cost over $400!! He had to reinstall water lines to the washing machine but somehow that got messed up. I called and left a message after 5PM and got a call back same day. Very good except whoever I talked to wasn't happy I asked to have someone else and didn't seemed concerned that the job wasn't done right but said he could have someone I have worked with in the past out. Next day wife gets a call saying someone is on the way and it is the same guy. She was told only he was in the area and the person on the phone had an attitude about it. Like we were out of line asking for another person. Seriously. Why is that an issue?? We had to get the work done quick so he did come and fix the problem although he wasn't very happy to be there. I have had work done by them many times in the past and they always did a great job and I always felt the prices were fair when done by other plumbers. I referred friends to Paul Scott. This time we felt like we were treated like we were the problem and probably won't be using them again or making any referrals. My reviews reflect past experiences too so I gave them better reviews than if I just did it based on this one experience.

The entire process was ideal. Called and setup an appointment (prior to the holidays which is the worst time to hire any trade as everyone is busy. They called to confirm like they said they would. Showed up on schedule and had the garbage disposal done in less than 30 minutes. Super quick and professional. Sink plumbing was competed to as needed. Employee was professional and as neat as a plumber can be. It is a messy job. We even had an issue two weeks after the disposal was installed that they came to fix for free. Solid company.

Although this happened several years ago, we only recently joined Angie's list and can now write this review. We called Paul C. Scott Plumbers to come unclog a toilet, which should have been a straightforward job. The workmen were upstairs for over an hour, and after a while they were rushing back and forth between two bathrooms, and running lots of water, all of which I found unusual. They finally came down to report that their plumber's snake had broken in our toilet pipe, they didn't know where it was in the pipe. "Maybe it went all the way down" was the most help they seemed able to offer. In order to get it out, we would need to rip open the ceiling in the front hall in hopes that it would be there. They gave us a bill for the full amount of time that they were here (like an idiot I paid it!) and left us in this condition. We called the company to complain, Mr. Scott refused to take responsibility for the problem, claiming that there "must have been something in the pipe" and refusing to consider that either his workmen might have made a mistake, or that their equipment might have been faulty. He insisted that if they came back to work on the problem, we would have to pay them, and that there was no way of knowing where the broken snake was so they would have to put multiple holes in our ceiling. When we asked if they would cover the cost of repairing the front hall ceiling after they had opened it up to find their broken equipment, Mr. Scott told us "that's your nickle." Clearly if the broken part stayed in the pipe it would probably cause a clog. Rather than start ripping apart our front hall ceiling, we asked a neighbor for a reference (wish we had done that first!) and called their plumber. They came and removed the toilet (which Paul Scott's plumbers did not do in their efforts to retrieve their equipment) and fished around very carefully and were able to extract the broken snake, which they looked at and said it looked like old equipment. They also ran a camera down the length of the pipe to ascertain that there was nothing in the pipe that might have broken the snake, and there was nothing there. We submitted the second plumber's bill to Paul Scott, since it was to correct a problem his workers created, and we were told that he "wasn't going to eat this." We tried negotiating with him but he would not budge. For the first time in my life, I took someone to small claims court. All I wanted was to get the bill from the second plumber repaid. Paul Scott was belligerent and rude, and I felt this was my only recourse. In court, Mr. Scott told the judge a very different story, and that they knew exactly where the broken equipment would have been found, and intimated that he would have had his workmen fix our ceiling-- a very different story than what he told us. I have read other reviews of Paul Scott here on Angie's list, and I am sure that IF THINGS GO WELL they are fine, but be warned that if one of his workmen make a mistake or something goes wrong, you are on your own and will get nothing but angst from Paul C. Scott.

Mr. (removed member name) we are sorry to learn of your plumbing experience in November 2009. We have researched our records and cannot find that we ever provided service at your location. In addition, we have not been involved in any court cases recently; civil or otherwise. Paul C. Scott & Sons Plumbing, Inc. has been in business since 1988 and we pride ourselves on quality service and professionalism. Unfortunately, we have heard of another Paul Scott doing plumbing work in this area; however, he/they are not related in any way to our Company. We invite you to personally visit our business in Madison Heights or you can call me directly. While I can understand your frustration and disappointment, we do not want to be negatively associated with the wrong Company. Kind regards, Christine Scott 248-547-9334

The experience was negative and I would not recommend Paul C. Scott Plumbing to anyone. I called and was told the house call would be $ 95 and the work $ 95 an hour and that a dishwasher installation normally takes under an hour. The provider arrived at the very end of the two hour window. I had to be at work and my adolescent son and father met the plumber at the home. I arrived 20 minutes after the plumber and he had talked my son into him installing a new valve under the sink. This was not requested and the son was not asked to contact me to get an okay before the work was done. I would have declined the work which was advised but not necessary. Professionalism would have required that the work be approved by the consumer who was paying the bill directly. In addition to this, the plumber spent two and one half hours to do what was to be a simple dishwasher installation and only that. When he said he was completed, he did not check for leaks. I went to the basement to check and had to show him that there was a steady leak. He at first denied that it was leaking and said it would stop eventually. He pulled on the hosing and went back upstairs and claimed that the clamp provided with the dishwasher was cheap and began to put a different hose clamp on. The dishwasher was running at this point. As he worked, I heard gushing water sounds and ran downstairs to see a torrential downpour of water onto the basement floor. He completed the clamp and wrote up a bill for $ 330 for what should have been a simple dishwasher installation. I said I would pay $ 200 before I spoke with the boss at which time he pouted and said he would end up getting yelled at. I gave in and paid the full amount. The following Monday I called and spoke with the woman owner. I explained that I was unhappy with the service. The owner was unresponsive and unhelpful. She did acknowledge that leaving the home while his work was leaking was unprofessional. I asked her to please not deposit the check immediately because I did not have the extra funds. They deposited the check immediately anyway. I would not recommend this company.

[member name removed]; I am sorry that you were unhappy with the service you received. Truly, we do strive to provide the best care and service for our customers and I apologize for falling short on your expectations. We are not always able to provide an exact time to install a dishwasher; there are variables that can come into play and generally we need to see the job in person to provide a more definitive time-frame, but we had no indication of a concern about that so it was not addressed. As I explained in our phone conversation; we have no idea of authority to approve or not approve an item; we asked the gentlemen onsite; he told us yes so we installed them; if it was something questionable and he wasn't able to make that decision, we feel that he should have said so. There are many times someone other than the person who called in the service request is onsite to meet our technician - we anticipate they are able to make whatever decisions are necessary at the time of service; we leave that up to you to inform us otherwise, especially if you didn't want anyone else to make any decisions. Quite frankly, to put shut off valves under a sink for the dishwasher and kitchen faucet is quite minor and certainly is something for your benefit. In regards to the leak; yes, many times the parts that come with a new appliance connection can be of a quality that isn't the best; he corrected it and put on different parts to make sure it held under pressure. Our service tech has been doing this for a long time and does very good work; I assure you, there was nothing done in any way that was meant to be underhanded. Also, I am sorry about your check; I don't recall having that conversation with you at all. I absolutely would have held it for a few days for you. Kind Regards, Christine Scott

I had a fresh water supply line under my kitchen sink spring a leak. I called Paul C Scott pluming on Saturday, and had an appointment for Monday (I told them it was not an emergency since I could catch all of the leaking water in a bucket). They called to confirm the appointment on Monday, and arrived within 15 minutes of the scheduled time. He came in, examined the leak, and had it fixed in less than 30 min. Very professional and he left the work area clean. Couldn't ask for more. The price was fair, but not a bargain. But then again, I would gladly pay a little more for timely & quality service anytime. I entered their number in my phone for next time.

Would recommend in a heartbeat and will be going with them any time we need plumbing work done in the future.

I called to schedule service and the man was initially very nice on the phone. He sent a plumber, Dennis out right away. I want to preface this by saying I am not a plumber and therefore do not know much about what needed to be done. All I know is that I now have a flange that cannot be put on because it is not level with the floor. I hire people to tell me these things. The plumber came out and preceded to tell me that I did not need to have the pipe ground down because it would be level once the floor was put down. I told him that we were using 1/2 backerboard and showed him the floor tile. He offered no suggestions and took the flange off. He seemed very tired and disinterested in his work. When he went to leave he wanted to charge me the 225 that I had initially been quoted for the grinding of the pipe. They ended up charging 140 because the flange was just taken off. This is where the real problem begins. When the flooring was put in and we realized that the flange could not be put in because it would not be level, my mother called them back because I was at work to see if they could come back out. Initially she spoke with a very nice lady on the phone who said that they would make it right. She asked her how much it would cost to have them come back out ( we would have paid it) and she said no charge that they wanted to make it right. She even said that they would not send out the same plumber because the other man had not seemed interested. She was very sympathetic and nice. Which was why it was so confusing when we received a phone call a hour later from the owner. He called and was very upset. He told me they would not be coming back out. That they had done the job that we had wanted when they were out and that they did not warranty the work (or whatever that means) because I had refused the work?! I never refused the work. He kept bringing up how we had commented on his worker and his lack of energy. (He did lack energy). The owner seemed like someone that just wanted to blame the customer even tho he was not at the job site. He then went on to outline the prices that he would charge to come back out. I probably would have paid them but at this point I was so angry because of how he was speaking to me. I just want a workable flange! This man was extremely abrasive and rude. In fact, I have never been spoken to in the manner he spoke to me by anyone. I have no idea how he runs a business but apparently has been a plumber for 40 years as he outlined to me on the phone. I am sure he will dispute this review because I told him I would be posting one. He told me I would be in the wrong to. I just want people to know the man they are dealing with when they contract service from this company. If you are someone that does not know a lot about plumbing good luck getting any help. I think he wanted a man to speak to because he sure talked down to me. I have never posted a negative review of anything in my life but this man warrants it. I will be telling everyone I know in Berkley of this incredibly rude owner.
Description of Work: I originally contacted this plumber to grind down a cast iron pipe in a bathroom. I had been told by my flooring contractor that it needed to be done so that the new flange was level with the floor.

I called Paul Scott Plumbing because I was having water come up through the drain in my utility room every time I ran the sump pump. I was told I would need to have my sewer lines cleaned which would cost $350 and would fix the problem. They cleaned the pipes, but the problem did not improve. They dug a hole in my backyard and cut a 2x2 inch hole in the sewer line and saw the water was running just fine. They finally figured out the problem was simply a faulty drain. They did not fix the drain, but instead just put a plug into it. Now I have no drain in my utility room, I paid for services which were unnecessary, and I have a hole in my sewer line which is probably dumping raw sewage into my backyard. They charged me $520 for all of this ($170 more than the estimate) and they are willing to fix the hole they made for an additional $350.
Description of Work: They not only did NOT fix the problem, but they charged me $170 more than the estimate and caused damage to my exterior pipes for which they want to charge me an additional $350 dollars to fix.

Yes, [member name removed] did contact our office for service on his sewer line; it was for drain backing up and he was unaware of an accessible cleanout; with that information, we quoted that it would probably start at $350.00, as we would potentially need to go through the roof. This was the first time we were at his home. Please understand that plumbing is installed in many different ways; we go into a home blindly; we attempt to get as much information from homeowners as to where cleanouts are; where things have been accessed in the past etc. When the homeowner has no idea of what or where things are, we have to take steps to locate and access sewer lines and/or storm lines – all of this takes extra time – sometimes it is quick and easy; other times it can take time. When we arrived we found his crawl space filled with water – the sump pump was running and backing up into the basement portion. We first attempted to cable the line thru the roof vent – the line did not open; we then cabled through the floor drain - the line still did not open. We discussed all work and/or potential work needed with the homeowner prior to doing anything. He gave us the approval to continue on. We probed outside to locate the sewer line leaving the house – we dug up to expose and at that point located 2 lines leaving his house. We discussed with him installing a cleanout on both the lines; this would give access to clean the line now and also for future, easier access – the homeowner agreed and approved. It was then that we cut a hole in the line to cable – it was still not opening – none of that is the norm. Since we had already determined that his floor drains were not tied in properly and further investigation and work would be needed, the plan was to return the next day to install the cleanout and to continue further investigation of his plumbing; in the meantime, we plugged the floor drain and had his pump running to get the enormous amount of water out of the crawl without it backing into his basement. This was just temporary to prevent it from backing in his basement for the night. When we called him in the morning; he stated he did not want us to come out. We offered further explanation and discussion; he did not want to discuss anything – just cancel the service call. We did. The next thing we heard from him was this letter and numerous negative reviews everywhere. We did attempt to assist him, and are very sorry that his home has these problems, unfortunately when the job required further work at additional costs; he declined the service. We have been in business for over 25 years, our Company and our men are very reputable and honest. We take every customer’s concerns seriously; however, sometimes we are unable to convey the required repairs without the customer disbelieving its necessity and the cost involved to complete them. We apologize that this was the case.

The old tank was removed and the new one installed after removing the old gas line and making the correct electrical hook-up. The preliminary electrical work was performed by an electical contractor at a nominal cost.
Description of Work: I converted from a gas hot water tank to a new energy efficient electric tank. This was done because I had problems with wind blowing out the pilot light on the gas tank. Greg Scott did the work after an in-home inspection and discussion of altenrative remedial possibilities.

CAVEAT EMPTOR SENIORS! DID NOT RESPOND TO THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU COMPLAINT I FILED! They were supposed to replace a toilet/ bolt it down and caulk around it. Well, they just sat the new toilet down on the floor and had my legally blind mom sign off telling her they would be back to finish! I called and spoke with PAUL C SCOTT himself. I was nice and explained the situation. He was very arrogant and rude and said " You can do whatever you want Lady.. your mother signed off on it" I then filed a complaint with the BBB and of course PAUL C SCOTT IS NOT A MEMBER.. I highly suggest going with companies that are members of the BBB. I think this business reviews are from friends and family members. I also made it my business to share with fellow community business owners about my experience. I contacted Sumner plumbing ... much cheaper and fixed the toilet for $25. PAUL C SCOTT CHARGED MY MOM $400 for the cheapest toilet and did no labor... Steer clear from this shady company! VERY RUDE and ARROGANT. The toilet he supplied my mom with is under $100 at LOWES!! The lid is cheap plastic (you can actual bend it!) So they charged my mom $300 to come and lay it on the floor and leave!!!!!. I have never been treated so rude!!!

We are sorry that you did not feel our work was completed to your standards. We always strive to make sure that all our customers are completely satisfied with our work. We did respond to the member's daughters complaint with the BBB and explained that we were unaware of the member's demitia at the time of servie, and would have never done work for someone that may not have needed it. She did need a new toilet and had a broken flange; We replaced the toilet and the flange; we bolted and secured the toilet to the floor and caulked around the toilet - everything was secure and working at our completion. We provide a 90 day warranty for all of our work. We didn't hear from the member's daughter until 10 months after the fact stating that we took advantage of her mother; that the toilet didn't need to be replaced and it was wobbling. I spoke with her myself and explained that unfortunately after 10 months it was long out of warranty and we would absolutely come out to check the toilet - but that charges would apply. She was very upset and hung up on me. We are unaware of any conversation with Mr. Scott.
