To All: Protect yourself; avoid doing business with Jim Hager of Preferred Builders Inc. of Kalamazoo MI. I contracted with Preferred Builders in April 2010 to replace my hail damaged steel roof with a new steel roof for the total sum of $27,500.00 and the results were disastrous. Within 60 days of completion of the roof, and my payment made in full several steel panels fell off. I then sustained interior damage to my home (estimated repairs of $2,100.00). In July of 2011 my roof was still leaking and months of feeble attempts by Preferred Builders to correct the problem went by and no satisfactory corrective measures were taken by them. On July 28, 2011 the Park Township, Saint Joseph County MI. building inspector inspected the roof for building code violations and he found multiple violations. It was at this point, I searched for a contractor to repair the faulty work of Preferred Builders and they all basically informed me that a total replacement would be needed. Since I had already spent a great sum of my life savings I could not afford another total replacement. My only course of action was to replace it using a ?reliable contractor? with a standard asphalt shingle roof but that was still at a cost of $10,000.00.The end result of doing business with Jim Hager of Preferred Builders is that I spent a total of $37,500.00 of my life savings to have a roof that is not of the same quality of steel roof that Jim Hager of Preferred Builders had promised and which I had contracted for. I have lost enough money and enough sleep over this matter with Preferred Builders. Please do yourself a favor and do not do any business with them. Truthfully yours, PS Angie?s list helped me find my new roofer.

The owner of the company, Jim, said he would be on-site during work. He wasn't. He also said that they would be very "neat" and clean-up daily, with no worry for nails on the ground (we have small children)...let's just say---they STUNK! We found many nails in our driveway and the road leading from our driveway as well as all over the property. We also had cigarette butts from the crew. When the crew was putting on the ice shield, they were doing it incorrectly (shorting it) and I caught them. I stood and watched them put it on the front of my house...unfortunately I had to leave town, and did not see the entire roof get completed. But when it rained, I found out how unfortunate me leaving town was! While I was in town, often when I went outside to check things out, the crew was sitting on the roof smoking and lounging. Jim was no where to be found, not one time! We have had two leaking spots that we know of, and now damage to the interior of our home, and our covered porch. We even had our township inspector come look at it, as well as other contractors. All stated, "I wouldn't put my name on this roof". Jim eventually came out, said he could guarantee that the shingles would last, but his effort to correct the "problem areas" (which we had none prior to his "help/service") after the install, or fix the areas of our home that now had water damage--DIDN'T happen! Our roof was older and we were hoping to make sure we didn't have problem areas by having the roof replaced. Jim sent two of his "workers" to our home instead of coming himself to "fix" the problem by putting "sealant" in the crease where the shingles meet at the siding. The starter strip of our siding was also damaged, Jim said just to "paint it a dark color so it matches the shingles and will not be noticable". He also said, that I should've hired someone else to do the job since I have sought other opinions about the job done==AFTER LEAKING!!! DON'T USE HIM!!! He gave me several references, which I contacted EVERY SINGLE ONE--who knows if they were family or friends that maybe he would do better by (I would hope so, because even a little better would be SOMETHING!)...and he even gave the Kalamazoo City as a reference, in which I contacted and they said he had installed 100's of roofs for them and has done great work. I really can't state enough how frustrated we are with him and to top it off--we only went with him because he offered a military discount (he was priced middle of the road, and the discount was our deciding factor after checking all the references)...so he really isn't honorable in "giving" to military families because all we got was CRAP! When I have spoken personally with other suppliers and asked about Jim--they said he doesn't have the best reputation...sorry Jim--you need to get it together to not have a review like this and go back to the customers you have failed and do the right thing! I really hope I can stop others from having to go through what we have!

Description of Work: These guys gave a very competitive quote, but it was not worth it in the long run. My roof stated to leak immediately around the chimney. I had WEEKS of run arounds with them promising again and again to come out to look at it with them never showing. I finally had to have another company fix the roof and then take Preferred to court. I won easily as they never showed. AVOID THEM AT ALL COSTS
