A few years after the house was built, we began to lose shingles each year on the back side of the house. After many repairs, some of which were done by JB Supply, we began to get reports that both the shingles and the installation were defective. I placed a claim with GAF for the shingles which required that we send some shingles that had fallen off for analysis. Their report back was that "the shingles meet established standards". They also noted that the "shingles did not show any signs of nail holes". We have learned that the shingles must be nailed in the proper place or they will over time fail and slide out. Several roofers have examined our roof and determined that the shingles have been improperly installed. They were nailed "high" or not at all When JB was confronted with this information, they appeared at first to be cooperative and claimed they would replace the roof at their cost admitting that they had equity in the problems we were experiencing. In the meantime, I contacted other recommended roofers to get competitive bids. After several weeks of delay in actually getting us a proposal, JB Supply's bid supposedly "at their cost" turned out to be actually higher than our next highest bid. I have subsequently learned that there is about a 25-30% profit margin in a roof job of our size. They bid $31,756. The next highest bid was $28,950. This would suggest that the actual cost was approximately $22,000. I concluded that JB Supply was profiting over $9000 in their alleged " bid at cost". I was prepared if their bid was reasonable to discuss what they would do differently now than what they had done in 1993 on the basis that they may have had a bad crew or some other extenuating circumstance. When there bid came in at what I believe is actually $9000 over their cost when they had claimed they would do the job at their cost, I reluctantly concluded they could not be trusted. I am now forced to hire a roofer to replace my entire roof at 17 years of a 40 year life because JB did not do the job properly in the first place and then when given the opportunity to make corrections at their cost, they gave me a bid which I believe was ,in fact, more profitable to them than my highest competitive bidder.
Description of Work: JB Supply did the roof on our house when it was originally constructed. They were a sub-contractor to our builder, Newcastle Construction. There were over 100 squares of roofing. We used a 40 year shingle from Elk. Elk has subsequently been purchased by GAF
