Trying to schedule Blaine Window for an estimate was the most tremendously frustrating experience on any home improvement project ever. I ended up totally wasting two days I had to take off work because - although I had requested a morning appointment - both times I ended up finding out at midday on the day of the appointment that the mechanic was on a large installation and they did not know what time he would be able to come to my house. This is something that Blaine could have told me the day before or when they called to have me reconfirm my appointment date two days before. They should be more organized about setting times and respectful of clients' time. Providing potential clients with a three of four window of time to expect service is standard practice. Not finding out until noon or later on the appointment date that they don't know when they'll be available is totally unacceptable.
Description of Work: Never got around to having services performed.

I had a prolonged phone conversation to verify that Blaine's repairs old wood sash windows-specifically broken ropes and pulleys. The receptionist seemed confused, and I had to repeat myself several times, but she agreed to send an estimator. I also wanted new storm windows for several windows. The estimators arrived on time, but immediately announced that they don't do old wood window repairs and told me to do it myself or find a carpenter. I was very disappointed, but since I was paying for the estimate, decided to pursue the storm window estimate. The estimator refused to measure a 2nd floor window, saying that since I had an AC unit in it the storm window would be meaningless. He didn't wait to hear that I intended to remove the unit. He measured the other three windows, then joked, "is this all the work you have for me after I came all this way." I found his manner a bit forward and unprofessional but waited to see the estimate. When I saw the cost for the storms, which was the highest estimate I received, and combined with Blaine's unwillingness to repair the old window, I decided to go with another company.
Description of Work: Estimate for storm windows and repair of old double-hung wooden window. Approximate cost: $55.

I resented the company's policy of no free estimates. The initial charge is credited toward your overall cost, but by the time they come for the estimate, you're kind of hooked. We went with Blaine Windows anyway, since the information they could give me over the phone sounded like their prices would be reasonable, and they were able to come out sooner than other companies, and we were in a rush. The measurement and installation work were done perfectly and I have no complaints. Their customer service; however, were a pain to deal with. The estimator took our screen doors with him, and indicated on the order that I would like to pick them up at the store, at my expense, so that we could get the screens back sooner than it would take to order the glass and schedule that installation. When I called several times, several weeks later, it was impossible to get any information about the status of the screen repair. The representative could only read me a canned line about how they'd contact me when they were done. I finally had to ask to speak to a supervisor, and interestingly enough, the screens were delivered and the glass installed the very next day. I wish I could have gotten such good service without having to intervene on my own behalf.
Description of Work: Replaced glass in sliding door which had fogged due to a broken seal. Also re-screened two screen doors for sliding doors.

I did not have a good experience with this company. I called Blaine because of their ratings on Angie's List but my experience was much different. I had four broken window panes and seven windows that I could not open. I called and was told that there is a $65 charge to provide a proposal. I decided to move ahead since the reviews on this site were good. Two men came but look at the work but told me they could not give me the proposal. I did not receive the proposal for over two weeks; when it came, I was shocked. The proposed charge was $612. I was also told by the men who came that there would be a break-down of the costs for each window so I could decide what I wanted done. There was not a breakdown. So I called the company to ask for a breakdown. They sent another proposal, which only took a couple of days, but it only broke down the materials for each window what was $15 per pane to be replaced; it then said $500 for labor. I called again to find out if I could get a further breakdown of the labor costs and was told "Our other office does that" and you will have to decide what work you want done before we can give you that information. At that point, I decided I had wasted enough time and money with this company.

I could not wait to get the man from Blaine who came to measure our windows for the estimate out of our house; he was dressed in cut off shorts, reeked of booze and smoke, and complained the entire time about his job/traffic/how many windows I had. Ordinarily we would have looked for another company, but because Blaine seemed to be the only company to replace sash cords, repair window panes, and custom make screens for our ancient windows, we felt we had no choice but to go with them. Plus, their proposal was very detailed, the price seemed reasonable, and the people we spoke with on the phone seemed professional. It took about 8 weeks from the time we signed the contract for Blaine to make the screens and schedule the repair/installation work. To my great dismay, the man who came to do the work was the same unsavory fellow who had done the estimate. Once again he arrived 2 hours after he was supposed to be there, grumbled about the company and the number of windows, and was shabbily dressed. To make matters worse, he did not clean up after himself leaving bits of wood/paint chips (very likely loaded with lead) lying around all the windows, he did not finish the job, he did not bring the window locks we'd ordered, and half the screens were made incorrectly and had to be reordered. I could not wait to get him out of the house. When I called to complain about the serviceman and the fact that the job was not completed in one day as promised (nor did the serviceman actually work a full day--he was at the house from 10-3), I spoke with manager Ed King. He apologized for the serviceman's behavior and promised to send someone else to finish the job. He also assured me that I would not have to wait another 8 weeks for remaining screens to be remade. Despite Blaine's assurances that our old windows would be like new once we replaced the sash cords, our windows were still extremely difficult to open and close with paint chips flying everywhere after Blaine's first round of sash cord repairs. As a result, we decided to replace the old windows with new windows thereby rendering any further repairs (save the custom screens for the windows we weren't going to replace) from Blaine unnecessary. Those 12 screens on the "need to remake" list, incidentally took the full 8 weeks to come in and when the serviceman showed up to install the screens, he only brought 10 of the 12 screens. I didn't mention this to the serviceman because I did not want to deal with Blaine again. The people I spoke with on the phone at Blaine were reasonable and professional. The servicemen and the people making the screens, however, left a lot to be desired. I would not recommend this company to a friend. I wish we'd just ordered new windows from the start and not bothered trying to save the old ones.
Description of Work: We contracted with Blaine to replace approximately 8 broken sash cords, repair a handful of broken panes, and custom make 34 screens.

I found Blain on Angie's List and I liked the ratings it received so that is why I used them. They were very efficient, they ordered the window and said it would arrive 4-6 weeks and they were right. It arrived right on time. I think the prices were a little too high, but everything else was fine.

It went well from the time I initially contacted Blaine in early March, to the professional installation of the glass in early May.
Description of Work: The glass in my patio door was fogged and needed to be replaced. Blaine representative(s) promptly responded to my initial call. Set up a time to come to my home to measure the glass. Made several appropriate follow up phone calls (to remind me of the estimate visit, the install visit, when my material had been delivered, etc.), honored the contract price and a coupon. The installer did a magnificent job. He was timely, quick and polite. I am very pleased. Thanks too to Angie's List, I had seen the advertisement for Blaine, but it was Angie's List that gave me the push, I needed to contact them to have the work done.

The guy who did the estimate was professional and friendly and in fact advised me that another job I was thinking about was not worth the money. He also did a minor widow repair on the spot, for which I remain very grateful. I was charged $65 for that call. About a week later the estimate came in the mail, higher than I wanted, but since they already had $65 (they apply the estimate charge to the job) I decided to go ahead. It took about another three weeks to get the actual work done. The two men who did the work did a fine job and it is a pleasure now to look out those clean windows. The only complaint I have is that I need to do some touch-up painting - they told me this would be the case and they could not do the painting right away because the caulk needed time to sit. So I really can't blame them for that.
Description of Work: I have five small panes of glass above my front door. They had become fogged over time and looked very dirty. Since I am selling my house I decided to have them replaced. Blaine gave an estimate and came back about three weeks later to take the old glass out and put the new glass in.

Very nice and courteous staff, let me watch the world cup while I waited. The company arranged the work for the convenience of my schedule. Because our condo maintenance manager could supply the rollers needed, Blaine agreed to schedule the work without an estimate visit. In fact, when the men arrived, we discovered that our sliding doors are different than others in the building and rollers from the association did not fit. The men from Blaine were able to check with their warehouse, obtain the proper rollers, and complete the job the same day. The men were pleasant, professional, and efficient. They removed the doors and replaced doors in a way that looked almost effortless. When they could not remove one door because the building had settled a bit, they still could lift it in its track and replace rollers. All doors move easily now. The work was good. The company's price info (given by phone) was not. They told me the price of a one-man job rather than a two-man job, and I had to pay more than I had anticipated.
Description of Work: Blaine Window replaced the worn, rusted, and corroded rollers for six sliding glass doors that lead from various rooms of our condo to the balcony. All the doors are made of plate glass with aluminum frames. They are 8 feet high and (several) 5 feet wide.

MY HOME IS OVER 40 YEARS OLD AND WAS PURCHASED OVER 20 YEARS AGO. AT THE TIME ONE OF THE DOWNSTAIRS WINDOWS DID NOT HAVE A STORM WINDOW. BECAUSE OF THE AGE OF THE HOUSE, THE STORM WINDOWS WERE THE OLD MILL FINISH ONES (SILVER). THESE WINDOWS ARE VIRTUALLY OBSOLETE. I COULDN'T FIND A COMPANY TO HELP ME EXCEPT BLAINE. THEY MEASURED THE WINDOW OPENING, ORDERED THE WINDOW, INSTALLED IT, AND IT LOOKS & WORKS GREAT. I THOUGHT THE PRICE WAS A LITTLE HIGH, BUT SINCE I HAD NO OTHER OPTIONS, CAN'T COMPLAIN ABOUT THAT.
