+ -1 moreAfter having a great experience with Chesapeake Window & Remodeling when they installed the front door and sidelites, we asked James Gay to give us an estimate on covering the exterior wood trim of our inside group townhouse. This included going up three stories to cover the chimney trim. His price was very reasonable and he was able to schedule the work within a couple of weeks. He kept in touch by phone and confirmed with us the day before he and his brother Joe started. As we have come to expect, they did an excellent job and took special care to duplicate detailed work like the areas where the exterior lights are mounted and the panels below the second floor windows. They also installed a new entry light and new house numbers which we provided. The job took about a day and a half. When it was finished, they did a thorough clean up. The result is very attractive and subtle. You would have to look very closely or tap on it to realize that it's vinyl, not wood. No more painting! It's a pleasure to do business with James and we highly recommend him and his company.

+ 0 moreMr. Gay responded to our request for a quote immediately. He showed up on time for the consultation and reviewed the situation of both doors, explained what he thought he needed to do. He gave us a catalog of quality storm doors of exactly what we wanted (not the cheap doors you can buy at large home and gardening stores). We picked what we wanted and explained that we also wanted to change our locks, for which he told us he would not charge us for installation if we provided the locks. For the contract, Mr. Gay came to our house again and reviewed and measured again, explaining what he'd have to do. Within 2 weeks, the doors were in and we scheduled an appointment for installation. He and his partner showed up before they said they would, completed the installation efficiently, and they took special care to clean up after themselves. We have already recommended Mr. Gay to a neighbor and would not hesitate use his services in the future.
Description of Work: We had two new storm doors installed in the front and back doors, plus weather stripping and new locks installed.

+ 0 moreThe 8 foot wide patio door leading from my kitchen to my deck needed to be replaced with a more energy efficient door. I solicited 3 estimates and Mr. Gay's estimate was the most competitive after a comparison of the three. Mr. Gay was very professional from the beginning until after the door installation was complete. I have an identical patio door on the lower level of my home and I intend to have it installed by Chesapeake Window when I am ready for the new 8 foot patio door. I was pleased by the entire experience.
Description of Work: Chesapeake Window removed the old and installed a new 8 foot wide energy efficient patio door. The turn around time from the date the door was ordered and the date of installation was quite rapid.

+ 0 moreLooking for someone who would replace our front door and side panels without attempting to sell us more than we needed or wanted was a challenge. Other companies pushed window replacement as well and lost interest when we explained that we weren't in the market for it. By contrast, James Gay was great to work with from the start. As he pointed out, since he owns the company, it's his reputation on the line with every job. He was professional, courteous, and meticulous. He arrived on time for all of the appointments (first visit to show us the product, second visit to sign the contract, third visit to do the installation). He even mentioned that if we got a replacement for the doorbell button, he would install it on the new side panel. James said it might take 3-4 weeks for the door and sidelites to arrive from the manufacturer and he was correct. He and his brother Joe did the installation, arriving shortly after 8:00 and working through lunch to finish by 1:30. Instead of merely slotting the unit into place, they applied some concrete to the top step to ensure that the new door's threshold would be level. They also took care of details like installing that doorbell button! The price for the job was very competitive, especially when we saw the huge mark up other companies were adding. We were so pleased by the quality of workmanship and James's integrity that we asked him for an estimate on some other work. We will definitely be using his services again.

+ -1 moreWe priced out three businesses. Mr. Gay came out quickly, gave us an estimate. He was really great to work with. Compared to the others, we did not feel like there were any heavy sales tactics. Out of the three, his estimate was by far the best price for the work he quoted. We called back and ordered the storm door. Once it came in he was able to schedule the work quickly. Mr. Gay showed up with an assistant and was done in half a day. The clean up was impeccable even though he had to do quite a bit of work around the door frame to restore it. He could not have been easier to work with or more professional. We would highly recommend him and the quality of the product is very good. I know the door will last us a long time.

He provided a detailed bid and was patient as we obtained bids for comparison, politely following up approximately a week or two later. Initially, the product price seemed high, but after comparing bids for identical doors and competing brands we found the price to be competitive. The ProVia product is high quality and appears to be a reasonable value for the money. James was also very helpful in assisting us in choosing replacement architectural elements for the door surround. James and his crew were punctual and efficient during the installation. The installation took a little over 1/2 a day. To date, the door is trouble free and the installation appears top-notch. I recommend Chesapeake Window and Remodeling for replacement entry door system sales and installation without reservation.

+ 0 moreMr. Gay was a pleasure to work with from the initial contact until the project was completed. We never felt pressured and felt confident in Mr. Gay's assessment of our needs. He was our third estimate and while not the least expensive option, we preferred his company over the others because he spent more time with us, was very knowledgeable, and seemed genuinely interested in working on the project. We had numerous questions and he was patient to answer all of them and make sure we understood the job and what it would entail. He was always punctual and was quick to reply to emails and phone calls. Mr. Gay himself was on-site to complete the installation along with two helpers. They were very conscientious, clean and careful in my home. We were able to re-use our existing trim work around the interior of our door with only minimal touch up work. He even re-caulked an area over our new door unit which was not even part of the job. We are very satisfied with the results, the quality of the workmanship and with our new entry door. I would recommend Chesapeake Window and Remodeling.
Description of Work: We replaced our entire front door unit including the sidelights, transom and entry door. The frame around our original front door was rotted and weather worn which was causing a leak into our basement.

Description of Work: This was a very good experience. After interviewing and listening to 6 or 7 other window companies I decided to contact one more. I found James Gay's company on Angie's List and since his rating were so good I thought I would give him a call. I was pleasantly suprised with his knowledge of the Simonson window that he sells and installs himself. He was able to answer all of the questions my husband and I had regarding the specs on the window. He also suggested we go on the website for Simonson to further our knowledge (which I did) and it was extremely helpful. James gave us all the information we needed on his first visit along with 3 estimates on different options for us to consider. He did not pressure us or try to convince us to use his company. Very refreshing experience based upon the other companies I interviewed. After doing our own research on the window, we called James to set up an installation date. He came out to our house again to do a final measurement and provide the contract. James is a down to earth guy and really easy to do business with. The original date we picked for installation was unfortunately cancelled due to bad weather, but we were able to pick another date quickly that worked for both of us. James showed up on time with 2 other workers and the installation was completed in one day without any problems. They were all very friendly and clean up was good. The windows look beautiful and are so easy to operate and clean. My former windows were probably about 25 years old and not energy efficient. The price for the windows was very good compared to some of the others we looked at. We decided to go with triple pane with krypton gas and super spacers. The windows are solid and heavy to install but easy to slide up and down and fold down for cleaning. So nice! Thanks so much James for a job well done!

+ 0 moreEverything went well. James gave us lots of options for replacement sliders, gave us his opinions on which he thought were quality and which were not, and left us to make a decision. Since every other window company was either pushing a certain brand or had a reputation for selling junk, I did a lot of research and found out that not only had James recommended sliders which receive high marks from customers and from other installers, his price was competitive with the cheap junk you can get from one of the large window shops. The installation took half a day, everything went as James planned, and the sliders have been great since.
Description of Work: Replaced one broken colonial-style window, and replaced two sliding glass doors in our walk out basement.

+ -1 moreOne of the best experiences ever. Mr Gay was very easy to work with. He even installed new set of exterior shutters I had bought elsewhere. I liked the fact he's the owner as well as the installer. The attention to detail is greater when the two is the same person. Initially, I called him to get an estimate for windows but had a more pressing need for doors & he was able to work with me very patiently as I made my decision on what & which doors I wanted. Until you need doors, you'll never know there are so many options/features available. The end result was it literally transformed the way my house looked & into one of the nicest houses in the neighborhood. The doors themselves are of top grade quality. Nothing like it. Does not compare to what you get at the big box stores. I'm still very much interested in getting my windows replaced & I know I won't have to look further than Mr Gay. Thank you so much.

+ -1 moreFrom the first phone call to the completion of the job I was totally satisfied. I had other estimates and James (the owner) was the one person who did not try to sell me what I did not need. He actually let me know what was not necessary. He is honest, friendly and a pleasure to do business with. It's unusual to have the owner of company doing the work himself. I had read several reviews on Angie's list which helped me to decide on the companies I wanted to check out. James even told me to get other estimates before I made a decision. Hurricane Sandy had our first date postponed and the only other day I was able to do was the day after Thanksgiving. That was not a problem for him. He was right on time and the job took less time than he thought it would. When the job was finished they cleaned everything up and you would never know anyone was here. My old windows were OLD. Some didn't open and in the winter air just flowed through the sides. I can now open and close them without a problem. No drafts at all. I LOVE MY WINDOWS!!!!!!!!! If you want a company who is honest, professional, punctual and no hidden costs, then this is one for you. Thank you James.

+ -1 moreSpent a good amount of time searching Angie's List for a company to replace two 40-year old kitchen windows with new, efficient types that tilt in for cleaning. I chose Chesapeake Window and Remodeling based on the excellent reviews and on their statement on Angie's List that they serve the 'entire area.' I live in College Park, Maryland (about halfway between Baltimore and Washington), and Chesapeake Window and Remodeling is based just north of Baltimore. Via the BBB website (BBB also rates Chesapeake Window and Remodeling very highly), I sent an e-mail request to James Gay describing my needs and asking that he get in touch so we could arrange a visit for an estimate. This morning I received an e-mail from Mr. Gay thanking me for my inquiry, but advising me that "we don't do that area any more." I don't want to inadvertently tarnish Mr. Gay's excellent reputation on Angie's List, so I've give this experience an "A" overall, even though I was unable to have any work done. I would strongly suggest, though, that he revise his Angie's List information to reflect the specific geographic area(s) in which his company operates. The current "entire area" description is, obviously, somewhat vague since it shows up on the Washington, DC version of Angie's List.

He charges the list price from the catalog, and does not charge more for installation, basic trim and aluminum cladding. This allows him a deserved profit without gouging clients. Install was uneventful.
Description of Work: We had two Provia doors installed. The doors are top notch, and a step above big-box store doors. The pricing listed, reflects the cost of 2 doors, one top tier, the other was steel. Both high-end... The pricing does not reflect anything unreasonable based on contractor.

Description of Work: Removed two (2) existing small fixed windows in the master bath room and replaced them with casement windows that open. The siding on the outside wall of the house had to be removed in order to remove the existing windows. The new casement windows were installed and the siding was put back in the original condition.

Description of Work: James returned my call promptly and set up an appointment to take a look at my existing windows that have been leaking. Rather then try and sell me new windows that I probably don't need, James gave me advice on a few things I could try myself to fix the leaking. Given his honesty and professionalism, I will certainly keep him in mind if it turns out I do need any window or door replacements in the future, but for now I'm happy to try and fix my leaking windows without buying new ones.

After consulting with Mr. Gay, I did some research on ProVia doors and was confident I made the right decision. In addition, I needed a hand-rail installed on the front porch/steps, which they agreed to do. They arrived promptly on the scheduled day/time, and finished in a timely manner. All debris was cleaned up and removed. Mr. Gay has always given the best advice - and has never been pushy. It is a pleasure to work with someone like that! He is professional and courteous, and knows his business. I will definitely use this company again when I replace another door - that will have to wait another year, though. I highly recommend Chesapeake Window and Remodeling.

James worked around my schedule to come out and give me a quote. The pricing was good. The window installation was very quick (2 days) even with some additional framing. I highly recommend using Chesapeake for your window replacement project versus some of the other high volume vendors out there. James only sells good products.

+ -1 moreI took a lot of time to research contractors for window replacement on this website as well as others. I also did a lot of research on the products the contractors used. After interviewing about 5 companies, I decided to use Chesapeake Window and Remodeling. I couldn't have made a better choice! Mr. Gay kept me updated on the delivery date from the factory, and we arranged for an installation date. Fortunately, we had a warm (60 degree) January day for installation! They arrived at 8:00am, installed all the windows, and removed all old windows and debris. There was nothing for me to clean up! The installation was superb! Their professionalism was outstanding! My windows look great - it gave the house a nice facelift! I waited to write this review until the temperature got colder to see if there really was a difference - and there is. My house is warmer, and my heat doesn't run as often. I would highly recommend this company, and will be using them in the future for door replacement.

+ -1 moreWe are very satisfied with the windows and their installation, and especially with James' attentiveness to completing the window installation. He had a family emergency, and despite this, was on time and very concerned about completing the job in the time frame he had given us. After the windows were installed we decided to replace our patio doors with garden doors and are currently waiting a call from James that they have arrived. We would not hesitate to call him in the future for any additional work we needed to have done. And in addition, he is dog friendly and was able to patiently work with us in regards to one of our dogs who doesn't like strangers in the house.
Description of Work: James Gay, the owner of Chesapeake Windows and Remodeling responded quickly to our initial call, arrived on time and provided more thorough information on his products and services that the other two companies from which we had obtained estimates to replace 16 of our 30 yr. old Andersen windows. He also gave us a website where we could view the windows and I was able to find reviews about them, unrelated to the product website. I felt I knew the windows we would be getting. There was no pressure to “buy now to get this price”. James kept in contact with us, arranged the install and again arrived promptly when he said he would. Installation was neatly done from inside the house and there was nothing to do when completed but replace the window treatments. There was no evidence inside or outside of house that anything had been done, except for beautiful new windows.
