We have what might be considered a complicated radon abatement project. Half of the house is over a crawlspace and half is over a basement. When he heard about the project, he asked where the house is located? When I said just inside I-495 he said he doesn't work inside the Beltway. He shouted into the phone, "Doesn't matter, can't work there, it's a mental thing." I replied, "OK, thanks very much," and hung up. The whole call seemed pretty weird. I wouldn't recommend him.

G.M.D. Construction, Inc. dd excellent work. They installed the system exactly as described. They even did a fantastic job of hiding the piping so that it doesn't show in the furnished areas of the basement. Outstanding work, all around.
Description of Work: Our home had a recurring problem with high humidity, leading to mold growth. The mold remediation company recommended we contact G.M.D. Construction, Inc. to have an active moisture control system installed. Essentially, it's built the same way a radon control system is. G.M.D. Construction drilled into the concrete block of our basement and created a network of sealed pipes leading up to a fan that vents out the roof of the home. The fan circulates air through the block, blowing the damp air out through the roof so that the moisture doesn't seem through the block into the house. Thus, it reduces the home's humidity and prevents mold growth.

My house had an existing radon fan installed in the attic space above the master bedroom. This fan created noise and vibrations that I found annoying, making it hard to sleep. Mike visited and first tried to replace the fan with a newer model, to see if that would reduce the noise. (The previous fan was probably 20+ years old.) However, this did not eliminate the noise to my satisfaction, so I asked Mike whether the fan could be installed outside the house. He provided a quote for an external install but suggested I wait a few days to make sure the noise was still bothering me. In the end, I decided the noise was still too much. On a subsequent visit, Mike and a second worker installed a new radon remediation system outside of my house (re-using the new fan that had just been installed in the attic to save some money). This involved abandoning the old system, drilling a hole into the basement floor, running power outside the house, and running pipe up along the outside of the house. The work took about 2 hours, and they did an excellent job -- top-notch in every way. I couldn't have been more pleased. In addition to a very professional installation, they respected my house and were careful not to track mud in the house, cleaning up any mess they had made as part of the install. A follow-up third-party radon test needs to be performed to make sure the new system is effectively removing radon, but after a couple days, my own digital radon monitor shows levels remaining low. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Mike for any radon remediation needs. His company does superb work and he is very pleasant to deal with.

This was a professional, informative, and satisfying business experience from start to finish. They made what I thought was going to be a complicated project simple and painless. Mike came out to survey the job and provide an estimate. He is very knowledgeable, personable, and thorough. He went over what we could expect and how the project would go. For both the initial appointment and the performance of the work they were on time and on schedule. If all contractors worked the way GMD did, the world would be a much better place. Highly recommend.

I puchased a Kidde radon test kit from Lowe's and had a 15.4 level which I considered very high given it said anything above 4 was bad. Contacted GMD by email through the Angie's List website and was contacted within 24 hours. Set up an appointment for the following day after work. They arrive on time and after examining the layout of the basement explained exactly what they proposed doing and the cost. I was told up front that it was possible that the proposed solution might not be sufficient with an explanation that made sense to me. They also gave me the cost if additional work was needed. They did not recommend doing the second step unless the test results after installing the basic system didn't lower the levels below 4. I did not sign a contract that night and did not feel pressured to do so. When I called later to arrange for the work to be done I was able to setup an appointment within less than a week. They came on the appointment date and did the work in less half a day. They cleaned up after themselves and explained how to monitor the system. As part of the cost they arranged for an independent contractor to come come to the house and perform a detailed radon test a few days after they did the work. That test has been performed and I'm happy to report that the results of the test showed radon levels averaging 1.6 over a 48 hour period. The report shows reading taken every hour. It was suggested I buy a test kit every two years to ensure the levels remain low. Though I wasn't happy about having to have the work done to being with, GMD made the experience as painless as possible. I highly recommend them if you need a radon abatement system.
Description of Work: They installed a radon abatement system which involved drilling a hole in the basement floor and another to exit the house about a foot above ground level. Pipe was installed in the hole, up the basement wall and outside. On the outside the pipe was run up the side of the house to about 8" above the roofline where the radon is vented. On the outside a fan was installed which was wired to a junction box in the basement. On the inside a gauge was attached installed to the pipe which shows that the fan is working (easy to read visual display). After installing the system they checked for drafts in any cracks in the floor and caulked them. They also provided me with 3 extra tubes of caulk as I was in the process of re-finishing the basement and they were areas that I was going to uncover that might contain cracks.

Johnathan came out for the estimate, reviewed the property, and discussed the options with us clearly and concisely. He indicated that a radon system installed external to the townhouse would be an eyesore as there was no efficient landscaping to obfuscate the fan and pipe, we agreed. The option we went with was a bit more expensive. Mike and Johnathan came out on that Thursday and started the installation despite some confusion on my end as to when the upfront and balance of the cost were due. They were on time, fast, efficient, and professional. GMD ran the mitigation system up through the center of the house through a wall cavity into the attic where the fan was installed and the stack exited like an air line for plumbing would exit. The only qualm I have about the work is that the flashing boot around the stack was bent a little on the low end, and it curves up a bit. This will not cause a problem, and is only a cosmetic qualm. In the end you cannot even tell that a radon system is in the house unless you know exactly where to look to find it. The radon levels measured went from 11.3 pCi/L measured at the home inspection to 0.2 pCi/L measured 3 days following the installation.
Description of Work: An active soil depressurization radon mitigation system was installed in the interior of the house, and run through the wall cavity. The radon fan was installed in the attic, and the system exhausts out the top of the roof. GMD hired a third party radon tester to come back in and verify the results.

I am very happy with GMD Construction Inc. They were recommended by an inspector whom I trusted and so I had them do that. It was recommended that I use a radon system not to control radon but because of the moisture. They did the job that they were supposed to do. My basement is now dry. The radon system is working very well. It was just one person who came and did the work. He finished the work in one day and everything was fine. I would definitely recommend them to others. I would use their service in the future.

Mike gave us a detailed estimate, explained the need for this mitigation and was careful to explain that further tests and work might have to be done if his initial installation did not lower the radon amounts to below the required threshold. He and his son did the installation in one day, the work was done with excellent quality and attention to detail. They had great respect for our home and when the installation was done they cleaned up everything. An independent home inspection contractor tested for radon afterwards (included in the contract) and the results showed that the initial installation was completely effective and no further work was necessary. We were completed pleased with the whole experience.
Description of Work: Mike Deitz, the owner of the company, analyzed our home in order to provide mitigation for excess radon in our basement. He explained the process, gave us a detailed estimate, and then installed the system as stated.

The service was prompt, expeditious, and affordable. Mr. Dietz has a reputation among other radon mitigators as being the best around, the grand-daddy of radon gurus. His assistant was also very knowledgeable; ie, not just a lackey. One caution: If you have pets in the area where they will be working, be sure to find a separate place for those pets for the duration. They work very quickly and, not surprisingly, they do not want to be responsible for accidentally letting a pet outside.
Description of Work: Mr. Dietz installed two separate subpad radon exhaust systems -- fans and piping -- under two of our widely separated concrete foundation pads. (Our house's layout is more linear than others.) Because our siding is brown, he used brown pvc pipe for the exterior, thus the cosmetic effect is much nicer than white pvc. They took great care that the vertical pipes did not occlude the shutters on our house, and that the fan placement would result in our bedroom remaining quiet. (Radon fans are not very noisy, but at night in the country, all noises seem louder.) They also sealed all floor cracks with foam and caulk, and sealed our sump with a plexiglas cover. The radon levels before/after show that the system works.

Mike from GMD was very professional. The install was done in less than 2 hours. They were on-time, on-budget, and left the premises just as they found it. Overall it was a pleasure having them do the work. I still have to have the radon levels retested so ensure that the radon level has been lowered which may take another week or two.
Description of Work: I had a radon abatement system installed in the basement. Work included drilling a hole in the basement floor, sealing wall and floor cracks, installing an exterior fan and piping to create negative pressure under the basement floor.

I tough 'surprise' to hear we needed extra work, but he was right, and got the radon levels down from very high to below EPA standards.
Description of Work: Came for estimate on radon remediation. Noted some unusual things about the house architecture that affected radon, was the ONLY ONE to see how this would affect a remediation system. We are very pleased with Mike's work and expertise. We checked many other companies and did a lot of research on the web. We wanted this job to be done right, since RADON abatement was important to us. Mike gave us good advice and the best proposal overall. He concealed the PVC pipe going through the garage and up to the roof, while every other contractor would run the pipe outside of the house. He also used a better type of PVC pipe. We checked 4 other proposals and thought Mike's solution was better and aesthetically more attractive. His price was about the same as anybody else, but he put more thoughts and work in the solution.
