Overall, I was the victim of a tactic widely used by some companies, and I almost fell for it. If the technician's "ultrasound" could not find a leak, he should have kept troubleshooting to get to the bottom of the problem.
Description of Work: Unfortunately, I can only give this company a failing grade since the repairman diagnosed my problem as a leaking coil and quoted approx. $2000 to replace it and recommended replacing the furnace and outside unit (compressor/condenser) also (company came next day for estimate of $5300 for SEER 13 system). The failing grade is because my coil was not leaking and, in the end, I paid about $110 for a service call, a few ounces of freon and a new contactor on the outside unit. This company's repairman diagnosed the leak using a 'sniffer' and then an "ultrasound." The sniffer indicated a leak was present, but the ultrasound wasn't as conclusive (the technician concluded there was a leak based on the sniffer only). A reputable master HVAC mechanic checked thoroughly for a leak with an "ultrasound" and found no leak. My system is up and running normally.

Decided not to proceed with the recommendation as it appeared that they were only interested in selling an expensive system which may not be necessary to start with.
Description of Work: Summer maintenance of the HVAC was performed. While the technician was courteous and seemed competent, he strongly suggested that I spoke with their sales people about 'options' regarding our system as he detected that the A/C might be leaking small amount of refrigerant. Met with the sales person and was basically told that the 'options' were how much we wanted to spend on a new system. Asked for a written estimate which appeared high.

All has worked well. Occasional equipment problems occured over the ensuing years of use, but the semiannual services, supplemented by on call repairs as needed (at no additional cost) have been responsive and have worked well.
Description of Work: Total replacement of household heating and air conditioning system with a new TRANE large capacity system, including extending the heating and air conditioning to a newly constructed room. Also purchased semiannual service contract which has been in use since.

Overall experience was very professional from start to finish. Original estimator provided us with options, detailed all available rebates and credits, and explained advantages of all systems. We were never pressured to purchase something we did not want. The installation went exactly as expected - the crew showed up on time, performed the work in a timely manner, and left the installation site clean and tidy. Before the crew left, they gave us a complete description of the new programmable thermostat controls.

For some time, the heat would not turn off. I finally called Blue Dot and they sent a technician the same day. He provided me with options, the cost of repair, and the possibility of replacement. When I indicated I wanted information on replacement, a representative came the same day, was thorough with the options available. I opted for replacement. The installers showed up at the scheduled time two days later, and were efficient in replacing the unit. They cleaned up inside and outside. I've been tracking my energy use since the installation, and it looks like my bill will be between $75-$175 less than last month. Hurray!

I needed a new heat pump system so I called Blue Dot and they sent someone over the next day to give me an estimate. I was happy with the estimate and had a new system installed the very next day. The installers that performed the work were very knowledgeable and professional and did an excellent job. I am very happy with the new heat pump system and the employees.

So our 20 year-old gas furnace was cycling correctly Sunday a.m., but in early afternoon, it stopped delivering heat. The burners wouldn't come on. We have a "Blue Guardian Plus" service contract with Blue Dot that includes two annual inspections (for heat and A/C) and service. They dispatched a technician promptly; I wasn't watching the clock, but he surely arrived within 2 hours and probably within one. Before entering our house, he placed plastic covers on his shoes to protect our floors. He opened the furnace and made some inspections and measurements, discovering a "shorted igniter," which he promptly replaced with a part from his truck. When finished, he completely cleaned up his work area and discussed the furnace with me. He pointed out specific signs that the furnace was nearing its end of life. The situation that he described is serious, and the age of the furnace makes it impossible to procure certain key replacement parts. At no time did he pressure me to buy anything, but he strongly urged that we take action. His demeanor was polite, friendly, and thoroughly professional.
Description of Work: The furnace stopped delivering heat on Sunday afternoon. Blue Dot sent Mark, who diagnosed the problem as a "shorted igniter." Fortunately, he had a replacement part on his truck and was able to get our very old furnace back on the air. (More details below.)

The only difficulties I had were at the beginning when diagnosing the problem was the issue. I was hearing different things from two different repair men which caused me to question the truth of my situation. A different service man explained the issue and the possible reasons for the different levels reported. All employees were courteous and professional towards me.

The technician gave our furnace a thorough check-up. This was the first inspection since the furnace- A/C had been installed. He made sure everything was working properly. The inspection was done in a timely manner, and we received a written report.

The provided a good, quality quote with plenty of detail - and a very competitive price. The only negative was that it took them several days to get out to us and provide a quote (thus also delaying the delivery of any temporary loaner window A/C units). If it had not been for that delay, we might very well have chosen Blue Dot to replace our system. This all occurred over the Memorial Day weekend, so the delay was understandable, but very undesireable given the high heat! We therefore would recommend others seek a quote from Blue Dot before committing to another vendor, as they may be just as fast in other circumstances and we did find they provided a better price with less "haggling" than the competition.
Description of Work: We asked this company to provide a quote on replacing an complete heating/cooling (heat pump) system, to replace a system which failed over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Description of Work: Blue Dot came out to diagnose my pilot light that will not stay lit on my 18 year old furnace. They replaced the ThermoCoupler assembly and cleaned the system. On September 22, 2011 I had a preventive maintenance call for my furnace. Was told everything checked out and paid $89.95. We had our first cold spell of the year on November 4 and the furnace would ignite and immediatley go off over and over again. Blue Dot came out on November 5 and told me I needed to replace the auto pilot which they would need to order. Lived with electric space heaters and fireplace for 4 days. Cost of this visit (because it was on a weekend) $140.00 On November 9 they returned and replaced the auto pilot. Cost $375.74. Furnace appeared to be working, but the weather had warmed up so it did not kick in until November 11 when it started coming on and going off as it was doing before. They came back on November 12 and the technician told me I needed a new gas valve installed. I was down there while the technician looked at the furnace and that is exactly all he did, looked at it. I asked how he could be sure this was the problem and his response was, "because there is nothing else it could be." Of course, they had to order this part as well. On November 16 the same technician returned to install the part and I was told that the manufacturor no longer sold only that part and they would need to install a new gas valve and ignition control system. Cost of this - $708.56. I said that I hoped this fixed the problem and the technician replied "I guarantee it." It did not fix the problem. At this point the technician finally did some real checking and discovered that we had either a bad gas meter or restriction in the line. I said I would not pay for work I did not need and that he should take out what he had just installed and put the furnace back to where it was when he came. He refused to do that (it was about 6:30 pm by then) and said the office would take care of it. Their idea of taking care of it was to reduce the bill from $708.56 to $332.58 for work I did not need and after I had already paid them over $400 for work that should have found this problem. I finally got them to stop sending me bills for this, but it was a real hassle. BGE came out that night and cleaned out the gas line and the furnace has worked fine ever since. The guy from BGE said this should have been an easy problem to diagnose, especially in an older house like ours (built 1927). He also showed me a parts catalog that showed the wholesale price for the parts Blue Dot installed and I was shocked at how much higher they charged, although in retrospect I guess I should not have been surprised. By the way, they never apologized for the aggravation this caused me (I missed 3 days of work staying home waiting for them) or offered to refund any of the money I paid for things I did not need. I feel they should have at least refunded the labor charges since it was their mistake and I said that in a letter to them, a letter to which they never responded. Needless to say, I will never use Blue Dot again.
Description of Work: Gas furnace would not stay lit. They did not fix the problem, because they could not diagnose the problem.

I purchased a service plan from Blue Dot because I just purchased the house and was unsure if the system had been maintained properly. The humidifier on the HVAC system needed servicing so I made a service call. The initial service was completed by Jamal W.Jamal did not know how to service the humidifier so he just completed the remainder of the service. His write-up said everything was working properly and that I needed to set up another service appt for the humidifier. After the service my A/C system on the 3rd floor was not cooling properly so I called for another service appointment. The tech was Tyran D. Tyran informed me that the 410A was very low and the system needed to be checked for leaks. I showed him the write-up from the previous tech and he said the readings were incorrect and the Tech should have known.It was difficult to set up an appointment with Blue Dot that didn't require me to miss several hours of work. I was given a service window of sometime after 12PM. I hoped they would have made some adjustments since the second visit was due to the inexperienced Tech they sent the 1st time.I honestly would not use Blue Dot again if I didn't have the service plan. I will however request Tyran D. as my Tech for all future service calls.

Overall the service was fine. It did take a little too long to get here. But this was Monday following a weekend with thunder storms.
Description of Work: My new A/C was blowing hot.It took a little too long for tech. to get here about 6 hours. When he arrived he went right to work and solved the problem in less than a half a half hour. There was no charge because it was a neww install. The service tech. was Chris Baptist.

The a/c heat pump unit started having problems keeping the house cooled to the specified temperature.Called Blue Dot, who does our twice yearly maintenance checks, and then sent a technician to check it out.The electronic filter had stopped working at some point and the indoor coil and fan motor were in sad shape.The technician cleaned the coil and fan motor, replaced the electronic filter with a 3M hepo filter thats easy to change and reasonable to buy at Lowes. This got the system working well enough to keep the temperature down.He came back and cleaned the blower assemble and installed a ecm protector. He was polite, professional and very helpful. I've been using Blue Dot Maintenance for many years, and plan to use it for many more.
Description of Work: Cleaned the coil and the indoor fan motor. Determined that the electric filter mechanism was old and broken.Recommended replacement 3M hepo filter that we can get at Lowes.Cleaned blower assembly and installed a new ECM protector.

Kevin L. was my service tech today and he was very professional and friendly. Description of Work: My heat pump air conditioning went out on a Thursday in late June. Blue Dot was the only company that could and did come out the next day. Others were saying one or two weeks.The repair man came out the next day. Unfortunately, the compressor was not repairable. I could have replacedf it, but there would be no warranty, because of the age of the heat pump.So, I opted to replace the whole system. The salesman was out the next day,Saturday.He did not pushed me into a larger more expensive system. The new system was put in a week later. This was during one of the heat waves this summer. Since this was the earliest other companys had said they would be out just to look at it. I was very pleased.The gentlemen who installed the system were very nice, worked hard and fast. And cleaned everything up .I have been very happy with the new system. It is a Carrier heat pump.It is energy star rated and has definately reduced my electric bill.I would definately recommend and use the Blue Dot company again. I am very, very pleased with the work , all the workes,salesmen,and the system. Thank You So Much!

Our A/C stopped blowing cool air on a Thursday evening. We called Blue Dot on Friday morning. The service tech arrived within 6 hours. He began with a quick check of the thermostat and evaporator. As soon as the system attempted to start the A/C compressor, he realized that the compressor was not starting and hypothesized that the capacitor used to start the compressor and fan had blown. He moved outside to examine the compressor. A quick visual examination of the capacitor added to the blown capacitor hypothesis. He removed the capacitor and confirmed the hypothesis with a multimeter (by checking capacitance which was much lower than the specification of the capacitor). He replaced the capacitor with one from his inventory and confirmed the operation of the compressor and A/C system. The overall process took less than an hour.
Description of Work: Our air conditioner compressor stopped working. Blue Dot came within 6 hours of our phone call. Blue Dot quickly identified the problem (a blown capacitor used to start the compressor and fan) and replaced the capacitor. The service call was ~$85 and the capacitor was ~$260 (~2x the online price - I would have given Blue Dot an A on price had the mark up on the capacitor been lower). Overall, Blue Dot was knowledgeable, courteous, and careful.

I had Blue Dot come out to look at my AC, which seemed to be running inefficiently - it was running constantly and I suspected needed to be charged. The technician (who was very friendly and polite) confirmed it was low on coolant. When he arrived my house was 68 degrees. The technician recommended that I not spend a lot of money on the unit as it's 35yrs old and that I replace it, which generally was probably good advice. However, we agreed he would charge it and we would go from there. Somewhere along the way (while he was here) the compressor stopped running. He speculated it had overheated and said he would have to charge me another 150+ to cool it off, which didn't seem worth while. I decided to skip the charge because the money was just mounting too quickly and while inefficient, the AC unit had been working. The technician left and I waited for the compressor to cool down and come back on. It never came back on and now my house is 78 degrees. Blue Dot won't come back to look at it without charging me the 83 fee again. I struggle to understand how my compressor worked when they arrived and does not work now and am shocked they would not send somebody back for another look.

The only time I have to pay anything is if I buy anything extra. but any replacement parts are all included in the payments I make each month. I have the same technician everytime. When he comes out he puts on those blue booties on their feet so they aren't binging in anything from outside. He is courteous and very knowledgable. He explains to me what he is doing whey he is doing and how he is doing it.
