+ -1 moreI am very happy with Sila in all respects. They called a couple hours before my service window and said the tech would be available early if that was ok. I said yes and he showed up about 45 before the original time. Jarrod was very nice and not only gave a summary of what he would be doing, but explained the specifics of it to me as he was doing it. Seems strange, but I actually enjoyed watching him work on our furnace! He answered all my questions and even offered up additional tips and information. He also bled the air out of several radiators and got them working again. He showed me how to do this on my own as I'd not done that before, having previously had forced hot air. The cost was exactly as advertized via the coupon I bought via Angie's List. I would not hesitate to recommend both Sila as a business and specifically Jarrod as well, he was really great.

+ 0 moreit went well, the old furnace was 50 years old and very heavy. there was little damage done taking it out. they completed in one day as the weather was getting colder and they didnt want to leave us without heat, as it was done before a long holiday weekend. john took his time explaining the new system to us and was very patient.

+ -1 moreI guess at the last moment they realized that they made an appointment and they sent a young man here. I don’t know if that was the company to do the job. But it was a good value. I usually do the maintenance myself. This time it has been over eight years that I haven’t checked the pressure in the gas and I don’t have a meter for that. So I decided to get a professional company through Angieslist. The price was reasonable. They made an appointment and I just called an hour or two before to make sure that they were coming in the same day. The men seemed to be caught by surprise and they sent somebody here. Apparently the guy took an hour to drive to get here. They arrived okay. It was my impression that my phone call reminded them about the appointment. The young man who came was apparently knowledgeable enough and was professional enough.

Description of Work: It's pretty early to know that the pump is now truly repaired; but so far, so good. My only complaint is that they were an hour early; but they called ahead and I said OK. It did interrupt the flow of my work a bit, but that was very minor. Work was done quickly; asked if I wanted them to leave the old part, but I saw it, and felt it was not at all necessary. I plan to purchase a service contract with the company. I've been looking for a reliable company to maintain the furnace for a few years.

+ -1 moreOf course my ancient furnace decided to crap out on the first sub-freezing day of the winter, and of course it had to be on a Sunday. I'd recently used Sila to clean the furnace and was pleased with the work and service, so I was relieved to learn that they offer emergency services. I left a message as requested and the technician on call got back to me within a half hour. He was at my apartment in a couple of hours, having attended to other calls further up the North Shore. Luckily, the problem was a relatively minor one and the thermocoupler was replaced in 15 minues. The technician was professional and courteous and I will definitely keep Sila's phone number in my speed dial.

Description of Work: I live in an 1874 Victorian with a boiler driven steam heating system. After ~25 years of valiant service the boiler had enough and gave out. Being from California and knowing nothing about steam heating systems, I decided to contract a technician to install the exact same boiler maker and model. I figured this was the safest route. I called a local technician who said he had experience with steam heating systems. He was very professional, showed up on time and completed the work efficiently and on budget. Unfortunately, the system did not work the same as before and the balance of the house was not good. Our main bathroom remained ice cold even though it used to be the warmest room in the house. After having little success in getting the original supplier back to the house to fix the problem I signed up for Angies List and called Sila Heating. Although they had to cancel the first scheduled meeting due to conflicts (I was scheduled for the afternoon and the technician got caught up in a project in Boston... it happens) they rescheduled for the following Monday, 730am. John showed up right on time and proceeded to look at the boiler. This is when it became very clear to me that steam heating system engineers are a dying breed and my former heating engineer, although very pleasant, knew nothing about steam heating. John and I went over the installation using the manual and even called the original manufacturer of the boiler. Although it was the same system I had before and installed exactly the same it was not installed to spec. The main steam pipes coming out the top of the system should have been merged into one line and the additional line should have been capped off at the boiler. The lines coming out of the boiler are 3" in diameter but were sized down to 2" about 3' above the boiler restricting the flow of steam. The bleed off value (used to boil off oil from the top of the boiler) was installed out the top instead of off the side per the manual meaning it would not properly remove the oil and grease). The return line is mounted 3'-5" too high and the refill valve which had been very conveniently installed next to the refill tube is now on the far side of the unit making impossible to see the refill line from the on/off valve. Needless to say, John knew what he was doing. I am now attempting to work with the original heating company (as I have already invested in their services) and I hope I can get this fixed. I feel very strongly that if I had gone with Sila Heating in the first place I would be sitting in a warm happy home right now. In the end, I may have to bring in Sila and the estimate bill to return the system to spec installation will be~$8,000. Although I did not use Sila for the actual heating service I would highly recommend them based on this service call and the considerable knowledge brought to the table by John. If you want someone who knows steam, call John at Sila heating.

+ -1 moreWe had another company who was the 'service provider' for the gas company - they couldn't show up and then came several times till they could fix the problem. They ordered and charged us for an unnecessary part (that was later refunded). As a result we looked through Angie's List (on line) and found Sila heating and air conditioning. The company was responsive and professional. When it became apparent that the original appointment wouldn't work out, they called to reschedule and accomadated my schedule so I could leave for work on time. When I inquired about a service plan I was told by the owner that they would first have to do their own maintenance check. They would not want to put a system on the plan unless they knew it was up and running properly. The service tech, Jared, came right on time (I could have set my clock by him), was very professional and very thorough. He invited me to watch as he performed the service. Jared checked all the systems and ran a safety check (four times just to be sure). He adjusted the settings, cleaned the necessary components, adjusted the gas so we could save a few dollars, and more. He cleaned up after himself. We are totally pleased with Sila heating and AC. They were a breath of fresh air. Incidentally, the service plan was less than the previous company and covered more. I guess if you do a thorough maintenance in the first place you can afford to offer more on a service plan. We are glad to have found Sila and will recommend to people we know.

Jarrod arrived right on time, and took about an hour to do the work. He was very thorough and knowledgeable, and encouraged me to watch him work. He showed me everything he was doing, and all the inner workings of the boiler. He LOVES his work, and it shows! He made some adjustments and cleaned some parts, tested the controls and safety features, and made sure I didn't have any questions. I am very pleased, and plan to keep them on speed dial for future needs.

Description of Work: John made an initial visit to our home and quickly diagnosed the problem with one of our gas furnaces. (This was a pleasant change from a previous company that spent over 1.5 hours and still wasn't sure of what the problem was). Bobby performed all the work described above and explained some issues with the furnace and what he did to make it better. I appreciated this as I could understand the problem and the need for replacement. I also liked the way he discussesd the varoius options and prices with me. I feel I can make a better dicision due to his feedback. When I get estimates for a new furnace installion, Sila Heating will be a prime consideration.

+ -1 moreIt went pretty well. He showed up a little early, which was perfectly fine with me. He wore little booties around the house, so as to not muck up the floor, which was nice. He was polite and got right to work. I asked the gentleman to show me what needed replacing and he did so happily, pointing out the broken bits and showing me the new pieces. I'm always a little skeptical of this sort of thing -- like when you take your car in for an oil change and they give you a list of $1,000 worth of work that needs to be done. Being a novice with boilers, I took his word for it. He told me when we should have it looked at again, and how long the new parts should last.

+ -1 moreVery impressed with the sevice. I was concerned that, since my heating system is ancient, those service people who would be familiar with it have long ago retired. However, the young service person who was assigned the job was extremely knowledgable about the system. He had a clear understanding of the functions of some very old valves, gauges, etc. - - he told me that he was trained by service people who were around when my old funace wasn't so old, and it was obvious that that was the case. I was very confident that the work that he performed and analysis that he provided -- he explained everything -- was totally appropriate, accurate and reliable. I would definitely call Sila again for any needed service for my heating system.

+ -1 moreThe technician arrived and refused to complete the water heater flush because he was concerned he might break a valve. The "whole house inspection" consisted of him looking underneath the sinks and stating "yup, that looks fine." Bottom line, we spent $89 to waste our time.
