Appt was made for a date in Jan. Hours before that appt window (3-4) Sila called to explain they had a a serious problem ahead of me that would rake all day, forcing them to reschedule me. They would have returned the next business day had I been able to be at home, but as it was, they came the next day I could be home. They also called me halfway into the 2 hour window they had given me for the new appt to explain that the technician was running late. I had the option of rescheduling or having him come late. I wanted the service done, so he did come late and stayed until his inspection was complete. He was very thorough, pointed out some repairs he felt needed to be made, gave me a written quote for the expected cost. Polite, professional, good communication skills.

I was overcharged on the installation of two bathroom faucets ($400)and their cutoff valves, otherwise OK. I purchased them myself at Home Depot. Also purchased new hot/cold cutoff valves for bathroom except one out of four. Maintenance person could not speak or write well, I could not make out what was needed. Did good work, however.
Description of Work: Installed two faucets in bathroom, expansion tank in water intake to hot water tank, flushed water tank to remove crud, left unreadable write-up of what happened and what was to be done. Installed varius plumbing devises.

The new furnace was vented through the back wall instead of through the chimney. To do that, the guys effectively used a crawlspace under an addition to the original construction. All appears to be well-sealed and the vent is quite inconspicuous on the back of the house. The new water heater is still vented through the chimney and, according to a subsequent inspection by a chimney service, the work was well done. The technicians left the basement as neat (or neater) than it had been.
Description of Work: Originally contacted Sila on an Angie's List Big Deal for furnace checkup and maintenance. The furnace had some issues relative to being twenty-four years old and our water heater, over ten years old. We were given options on several different high-efficiency replacements and selected units with rebate or low-interest financing availability, relating to those efficiencies. Everyone I dealt with at Sila was very professional, attentive to my questions, and concerned with my satisfaction.

We did not get any work done, and never will ever call this company again. They are plain and simply put, unethical.
Description of Work: We had a company come out and do an evaluation on our home for energy efficiency. One problem was that our gas hot water heater was not venting properly so we called Sila to come out to take a look at the problem. First we had to spend $89 for just the service call that they were going to put towards the cost of the repair. Everything up to this point was going smoothly. When the technician came out, he gave us one option for our hot water heater and the estimate was ridiculously high. He said that we would have to vent the unit out of the side of the house. It currently vents through the chimney. So he said the only option was to build a venting system to rid the carbon monoxide out of the side of the house. This is where the problem arose. My wife was home when he was giving the estimate. He went on to ask if we had a furnace in our attic, and he told my wife that there is a new law coming into effect in MA as of May 1. Furnaces would no longer be able to be installed in an attic space, and if we needed to replace the furnace we would have to completely tear out the old one and rebuild the duct-work from our basement. The home energy company gave us a report on our furnace saying that it is working to 98% efficiency and everything checked out fine. We also had our furnaces serviced in the summer, and that company said that they were both working very well and we could expect many more years of service out of them. I thought that this sounded fishy, so I called our town's building inspector. He said that this was absolutely false. There is no statute coming that outlaws furnaces to be housed in the attic. So it appears that Sila tried a scare tactic with my wife. It is probably one of the most unethical things I have seen a contractor try to get away with. We called to try to get our $89 back and have not gotten a call back. I would stay away from this company. The worst professionalism that I have seen from a contractor.

This is the first coupon we have bought through Angie's List. Sila actually called us before we had a chance to call them to make an appointment. We made an early morning appointment and the technician arrived as scheduled. He spent about 1 1/2 hours evaluating our furnace. We didn't stay with him as he worked, but at the end he discussed what he found and explained his recommendations. Our furnace works fine and has given us almost 25 trouble-free years, but given its age we were not surprised to hear that a few things should be replaced. When he showed us a couple of parts that need replacing it was obvious why he was suggesting that. He gave us a written estimate with several options for repairs. A couple of options included maintenance contracts, which we almost never buy. He mentioned that with the recommended repairs the furnace will have a number of good years left. We plan to schedule repairs when the weather gets warmer.

My interaction with Sila Heating & Air Conditioning was fine. It was sort of a routine type of thing and I don't actually remember all that much about the interaction. The only thing I do remember was that it took a while to schedule the furnace. I think I had to wait 3 weeks or so to get the appointment.

The technician performed a very thorough inspection of our furnace and air handler. He explained the systems to me, left a written report and made recommendations. There was no pressure to implement the recommendations. The only surprise was that the Big Deal that I had purchased only covered the furnace. They allowed me to pay the same discounted price to inspect the air handler. I was told this however, in advance of the inspection and did purchase the additional inspection. This easily could have been my misunderstanding. I would still purchase this again. Next time I will know that I need two coupons to cover the full system.

The heat on our upper floor (where our bedrooms are located) stopped working, just as the temperatures plummeted & we had visitors staying with us. This plumber was good, but the advice he gave for the part(s) needed was not the best. I have a shower shut-off at my summer house that you push in and it shuts off completely and easily. This gentleman told me to get a particular manufacturer's shut-off that requires turning it as tightly as possible to shut it off and it's harder...it's low-end and disappointing. He was a nice man, and did a good job, but I would not use this company again.

The blower of my four year old forced air gas furnace decided to give up on the coldest night (01/24) of the year. I diagnosed the heating system and knew that it was the blower that had problem. So, I called the guy who installed the system for advice and warranty information. He couldn?t come fix it and said that it will cost around $400-500 with parts and labor. So, I decided to call Sila as I had their number because they did some work at my other house. They scheduled someone to come to my house to check out the heat. I explained the problem to the tech. and showed him the issue; and he also came to the conclusion that the blower needs to be replaced. Then he goes back to his van to check the prices/etc and comes back with $860 for parts and at least 1.5 hours (possibly more if he encounters another problem). I decided that I need to do a price check and if he could give me the part number that needs to be replaced. He goes back to his van and comes back after 20 minutes with a invoice for 269.00. He said that its their policy that he cannot give me the part number. Then I asked him, why you are charging me for 1 hour when it took you only 5 minutes to decide that the blower needed to be replaced (and other time was spend talking to his office finding price/part etc.) He said he has been here for more than 30 minutes, and it?s their policy to charge to 1 hour once the time go over 30 minutes. He is basically asking me for 269 for no useful service performed. I paid him a check and asked him to leave. Then 30 minutes later, his office calls my cell phone and tells me that the quote I was given was wrong, the $860 included the labor. Then I called someone else (acquaint of my uncle), he diagnosed the system, disassembled it, bought the parts, fixed it in two hours and charged me $320. I give him $400 as I was saving at least 600+ had I gone with Sila. They over charged my card by $40 last September, but I ignored it because $40 wasn?t worth the trouble. But this time I?ve had it with them.

The original coupon that I bought from Angie’s List was for $49 however, the plumber did go over and spent longer but he decided not to charge anything extra, which was very nice of him. We already had the dishwasher when he arrived and he just had to put it in, which took him about an hour and a half. He cleaned up the mess finely.

1) Very Responsive e.g. purchased Big Deal and shortly thereafter sent an email with contact information. Within 1 hour received a phone call. home appointment set up within a couple of days 2) Professional e.g. received a phone call to inform of arrival al time; upon arrival, Bobby the technician, was very willing to provide as much detail as requested. In my particular situation, it was not surprising to hear that the HVAC system required attention as it had received very little. 3) Educational e.g. Bobby explained the intricacies of the workings of an HVAC system and the rationale for replacements or evidence of an inefficient system. 4) Customer focus e.g. Bobby provided options as to how to proceed i.e. pay for the current situation or purchase a 5) Value. I opted for the 5 years agreement service (which was more than $307) and feel I have already a valuable resource. Bobby spent 2 hours on 1/14 and upon his return on 1/17, he spent an additional 5 hours installing the replacement pieces required. There is no doubt in my mind that he was working all that time. I also have a comfort level with him as well as the company.

We expected the Big Deal to cover inspection and tuning of the central A/C for our house. It turns out that the Big Deal was only for a single condenser and air handler... we have two of each. This was in the fine print, but we did not catch that part of it. The workman that came out was cordial enough, but had to break the news to us that this was going to cost us an additional $89 since we had the two air handlers. He worked diligently, but did not clean the electrostatic air filters. He said that we could easily pull them out and take care of it ourselves. This was true, but in reality we should have been more assertive and insisted that he clean them as part of the service we had paid for. Overall, they were OK, and all things being equal I would probably give them another shot, but not at something big like replacing our A/C system.
