I was very pleased with the whole process. It only took one day. Both the initial home energy assessment and the entire weatherization of the attic, cellar, and other parts of the house went smoothly. The crew were very accommodating and helpful. Late that afternoon I had to call because I noticed insulation on my kitchen floor. He came back early the next morning and fixed the problem.
Description of Work: Home Works Energy worked with Mass Save, then NStar, which examined my home for sources of heat loss and energy-saving steps that could be taken to improve the efficiency of my home. They insulated my attic and portions of my basement. They replaced the bath fan hose and all the light bulbs in the house which were not the energy saving ones. They also blew insulation into my kitchen wall where I was having problems with pipes freezing.

There lack of responsiveness in the office and the customer rep was awful. My neighbor had an assesment done. I spoke with the rep while he was here. He said that he would pass my information along to the office to get me scheduled. They were supposed to call me the next day. I waited 2 weeks and then texted them to ask if I would be getting scheduled. I only received a text back "Y".

As it turned out, the access to the attic area was no more than a hatch and had to be enlarged. The crew did this neatly and installed tons of insulation, new thermostat and turned me wise to a Mass Save rebate that would save me $300 on a new furnace which I badly needed. All in all, I needed the work done and they did a great job and saved me a bundle.
Description of Work: Working with the Mass Save program, this contractor inspected, insulated attic and basement, exterior door frames and replaced household bulbs with energy saving ones. The workers were clean and professional and did a great job.

Homeworks is a participating contractor in the Mass Save Home Energy Services Program. I contacted Mass Save and was given their name since they service my local area. It was very easy to set up an appointment. They were prompt and responsive and sent out an auditor within a week. I have a 45-year-old house with a boarded up attic (for storage) so it was challenging for the auditor to figure out what to do with adding more insulation without incurring thousands of dollars out-of-pocket for us. He came up with a solution that (at the time) seemed brilliant since it would cost us only $1275 out of pocket (Mass Save would cover the remaining $2,752). My understanding at the time was they they would remove the floor boards and blow in some additional cellulose to augment existing R13 insulation to bring up to R19 (as explained to me, a process called cellulose dense pack). Afterwards they would reboard them to the original condition. I signed the contract and they sent us the paper work the following day. Everything was great up to this point. They scheduled to work to take two days. 4)On the first day of the appointment, two trucks showed up with four guys. After looking at the work order and the attic, they said that they could not do the dense packing because I already have fiberglass insulation underneath the boards and the dense pack cellulose would have no place to go. That was not good news because it was the majority of the work scope. Why did an auditor from the same company put that in the contract and assured me that it would work if, technically, this can't be done? So we scrambled to figure out what to do because I didn't want them to leave, bring in another auditor, then wait another month to do the work. I had moved all the stuff out of the attic and put in the garage, and I didn't want to wait another month since I had already arranged people to help me bring our stuff back into the attic. The solution we eventually negotiated was less than satisfying since it would do nothing to better insulate the boarded up portion (75%) of the attic floor. We decided to focus on other things that could help insulate, such as capping the top of the interior walls, cover the recessed lights, change the hoses of the exhaust fans, etc. in addition to remaining items in the original contract (open blow cellulose parts that weren't boarded up, damming, roof vents, etc.). I got on the phone to negotiate with the boss and eventually got the prices down to the original $1275. However, I could not help feeling very disappointed about what Homeworks had promised to do. They did a fair job on the renegotiated tasks. The attic stair cover fit really well. The covers for the recessed lights were well done. The weather stripping and door sweep work were good. But the open floor cellulose blow was not uniform, the foam sealing was a bit messy, some of the floor boards were not completely screwed down, and they could have done a better job cleaning up. The guys worked hard and they took only a day to do the job. In summary, my biggest disappointment was that I was led to believe (and signed a contract for) something that Homeworks was not able to deliver at the agreed upon price.
Description of Work: Perform a free Mass Save energy audit. Follow up two months later with insulation work, propavent, attic floor open blow cellulose, damming, two roof vents, attic stair cover thermal barrier with carpentry, air sealing, exterior door weather stripping and door sweep. Work in contracted but not done: Attic floor enclosed cellulose dense pack.

Hi [Member name], My name is Max and I'm the new CEO of HomeWorks Energy. In 2013 we went through a change of ownership and I took over the business. Since then, our customer service and training standards have gone up. I would love to rectify this issue that you had and send someone out there again, free of charge, to perform another assessment to make sure nothing was missed. I will make sure to send one of my most senior Home Energy Specialists. Thank you, Max

The work was inadequate according to another inspector and had to be redone. The redo had two men, one who was good and one who must have been a trainee. What a mess he made of my basement. There is no way to describe how sloppy the work was down there. Gobs of hardened foam were on pipes, on the floor, and overall uneven and unsightly. Every horizontal surface and every box or bin was filled with debris, not just the hardened foam but bits of dirt and debris. The experienced man did a fine job upstairs. The other man does not belong in people's homes.

A year ago i had this company come and insulate my walls they also gave me a quote on the attic but we were doing a deck at the time and new siding the attic had to be put on hold the owner said he would honor the quote and to give him a call when i was ready. I have been calling for the past 3 months finally someone called me and told me they needed to reassess the job which has not changed in anyway. My quote went from 1900 to 4800 to do the exact same thing. The inspector that came to my house just said it is what it is he had my original quote in his hand but it didn't matter. I was attempting to be return customer because i already had a quote and i thought it would be less of a headache how you justify such an increase i do not know. You can find a better company and a better price.

It was difficult to get in touch with them. They canceled the appointments a couple of times - once last minute and the other a few days notice. When they came to do the audit, they were thorough and professional. It took a little longer than estimated to get the report back. It provided good feedback and I am interested in getting additional work done with them. I'm still waiting for them to return my calls for the additional work.

I purchased the big deal coupon for this service and it was good. I was hoping to get the master discount but I did not get it, because of the master criteria. I tried calling up the vendor and the vendor gave me a list of recommendations on what to improve. Then I tried to schedule a time to actually get the insulation done, and I had a hard time getting in touch with the vendor. The vendor was somewhat unreliable. I had to call him back and forth 3 times to get him in here the first time. It took a couple of tries to get him here and he gave me an estimate of what it would take to make my place energy efficient. I told him that I was thinking of doing it myself but to give me an estimate, which he did. I tried calling him and I also emailed him because I wanted the work done, and so to schedule a time and he never got back to me. The pricing was fine.

The contractor seemed a bit overwhelmed by the Angie's big deal rush. It took awhile to get the job done, and after the job was inspected a few items had to be fixed. However, the items were taken care of quickly and it was not a big deal at all. The contractor seemed very honest and really wanted to do a great job. It took a while, but in the end everything worked out great. Very noticeable improvement in my home's energy use and comfort.

I went with Homeworks Energy after seeing a pretty good Angies List Big Deal from them. They were quite responsive in setting up the appointment dates and helping me understand the coverage as part of Mass Save program. A lady came on the appointment date to conduct the review and I was not terribly thrilled with her work. I had some home renovation happening at the same time and so, some of the appliances were disconnected. Even though they were 10 yrs+ old, and anyone would know that they would qualify for an energy rebate, she won't give it until she saw them working and take measurements. She also won't let me replace any bulbs saying the rule was that the auditor had to do it themselves. Fine, call it sincerity / commitment to work. But when her audit report came, I was stunned to see that she recommended many a work that was absolutely not needed! Ignored that as well since my big deal coupon was still sufficient to cover all my expenses. They then setup the appointment for their workers to come and perform the insulation / venting etc. 2 guys came and they seemed nice. I told them my frustration with the audit report and they told me that they would work with the management to correct the report and show the right charges. One of the guys wanted to use our bathroom and I gladly allowed them to use our guest bathroom. But after they left, my wife found out that they made an absolute mess of the toilet - not even flushed the toilet and putting the tissue paper with all the junk outside the toilet!! I can still not understand why anyone with a minimum decency would do that. Also, the charges were never corrected. Being a Christian, I forgave them and didn't make it an issue. But I did complain about them to Mass Save. Mass Save couldn't consider the toilet issue since they rate only by the quality of the actual work, but they did take up the complaint about inaccurate audit reporting and showing wrong charges.

Hi (deleted member name), my name is Max and I took over the company RIGHT after (September 7th) your experience happened. I am deeply sorry! In the restructuring we have since let a number of employees go due to experiences resembling exactly what you're talking about. From your description it sounds like we let the employees you are referring to go, but I'd like to make sure that moving forward we have removed all the bad eggs. Last year I signed up for a free MassSave energy audit conducted by HomeWorks Energy (HWE). I knew I had a ?cold? leaky house and high heating bills, so I was desperate to figure out how to improve my heating problem. HWE was a godsend. They conducted a technical energy tests, and recommended solutions. HWE?s talented and dedicated technical work crew arrived and conducted the necessary work: air sealing, attic floor insulation, insulation of the entire garage ceiling, insulation around a new special housing for our downlights in the two bay windows, and removal of old materials. Jeff, Ronnie, and brothers Steve and Sean all have many years of experience, including working as youths with their dads who are skilled tradesmen. The work was subsidized by the Mass Save Energy program in the form of rebates. All of the paperwork and submissions of bills/receipts were handled by HWE. The total bill was $2,500. After the MassSave rebates were applied, my final bill was $620! And the best part ? the program works. My house is so much warmer and the heater isn?t going on all the time because the rooms are actually retaining their heat. It?s a huge improvement. And, I?m anticipating significant monetary savings. By the way, this is a ?new? and improved Home Works Energy. President Scott Veggeberg?s son last year graduated from BU with a degree in business and entrepreneurship, and he is taking over the administrative aspects of the company. This frees his scientific father to focus on new projects and technical aspects of the energy business. The team is solid and is dedicated to be the best in the business. And why do I know all this? Frankly, I ask a lot of questions.

They did a complete energy audit, which was very thorough and helpful to me. I then hired them to do remediation, using the Mass Save plan (which includes special prices for some of the insulating). They did a good job, but not a perfect one. Mass Save, which checks the quality of all these jobs, reviewed their work and found a number of problems, which they fixed very quickly. They explained that they were new to the program and still learning what the expectations are (which made sense to me). They were always very professional and responsive and addressed any issues I raised immediately. The owner was involved several times, which was also helpful. This work was done some time ago, and I'm quite confident that they've ironed out the problems.

We got good information on the day of the audit, which was very thorough. Unfortunately, the Homeworks computer on which the data was stored was stolen, so we never got the final report. We were offered either a refund or a redo, as I recall. (It's been a couple of years now, so don't hold me to the details.) I knew by then that we wanted to have wall insulation done, so after some delay I suggested via email that we would like to discuss having that done, but did not get a response. Eventually we had insulation done through Mass Save, with a different contractor from their list.
