We bought the Angie's List Big Deal for a hardwood floor refinish at $399. Since we were having our kitchen floor done there was an additional charge, as the coupon was good for a specific square footage which we exceeded. However we were reminded of this in advance. We purchased the Deal in November and RC Hardwood Floors contacted us immediately to request further details of our needs and determine a date for the job. After a few emails back and forth we settled on February 22 for the initial work and were told the workers would be back for a couple consecutive days to apply additional coats of finish. A few days before the start date we were again contacted to reconfirm the date and were provided with more details including recommendations to remove everything from our kitchen counters, etc, as the process is about 80% dust free. The workers showed up on time, were very courteous, neat and professional, and the job was completed over the course of 3 days. There is definitely some dust and our kitchen will require a thorough dusting and wipe-down before we replace all our belongings, but we were expecting this and had no concerns. We had expressed reservations about how the final product would look as our original stain was not well applied, the floor was somewhat unevenly sanded and we thought the new finish might still show signs of the original dark cedar color. Richard Cotton assured us we wouldn't have leftovers seeping through, but we were still a bit skeptical. We were therefore delighted to see that our floor now looks completely brand new with a gorgeous blond finish, the semi-gloss shine we requested and no signs whatsoever of the former dark stain color. Good value (about $1,000 total for our 20x22' kitchen with custom shaped island). Absolutely will contact RC Hardwood Floors again in the future and will definitely recommend to others.
Description of Work: We had the dark cedar stain stripped off our kitchen hardwood floors, then the natural floor, which is red oak, was sanded, buffed and refinished with 4 coats of finish.

How did it go? Well, you be the judge. I received the following email from the owner the very next day (I added the bold text). i think the email speaks for itself....... "I wanted to give you a call but the only number I have for you is your work number apparently. I wanted you to know that we did state in the fine print that there may be an additional charge for jobs on the 2nd and 3rd floor because of jobs in Boston. Also, that means ?there will be an additional charge? most people figured that out on their own. To say that we carry ?one or two pieces of equipment up 15 steps seems outrageous? is crazy. First of all, we carry a lot more than one or two pieces of equipment up those stairs. Our equipment is very heavy and we have a big sander, edger, vacuum for the edger, under radiator sander, buffer, hoses for the sanders, extension cords, big sander cord, scrapers, hammers, nail sets, sand paper, back pack vacuums, poly buckets, etc?? This job takes many, many trips in and out of the job, up and down the stairs over and over again and again! We also have to come back different days and the stuff gets carried in and out again. We have been doing jobs on the 2nd , 3rd, and 4th, and even 5th floors in Boston with these coupons and we HAD to protect ourselves and be compensated for our efforts! To say that you don?t trust us because of something so necessary is just wrong. What does this have to do with trust or candor?? You are the ONLY one to complain about this so far. It?s no surprise to me because we did make it perfectly clear in the fine print. If you want us to wave this fee for you, I am fine with that. No need to be so aggressive when you obviously don?t know what you?re even talking about. We did the other rooms for you and you are a repeat customer so I don?t care about the 100 dollars. It is , in my opinion, a very justified charge, however. If you want a refund then it won?t come from us. You didn?t buy the coupon from us so why would we be responsible for it?? You have to go through angieslist for that."
Description of Work: I had used them last year and they did a fine job so I signed up for their Big Deal - $399 for 200 square feet of hardwood floor refinishing. The Fine Print in the ad indicated that "work done on 2nd & 3rd floors may be an additional cost - please inquire with service provider". I live on the 2nd floor and there was no additional cost when they did work for me last year. When they called to schedule I asked about the additional cost and they said it would be $100! I thought about it for a bit and sent them an email a day or two later, explaining that I felt the cost was outrageous and that I wanted to cancel my Big Deal.

We do make every effort to contact every member individually, however, due to the overwhelming call-back volume, most of my contact is done via email. I contacted this member a couple times with no response. I do recall getting a voicemail from Angie's List directly stating that this member was having trouble contacting us? Our phone number is on our profile, so I'm not sure why he had trouble. I received no other calls other than this one from Angie's List regarding this member. I did call this member immediately and was able to schedule his job, after also having difficulty calling him on the phone number provided, even making an exception for the time frame he wanted to have it done, as the coupon would have expired.

RC Hardwood floors came promptly on the first morning, and we discussed the areas to be refinished. We decided that it would be best to continue the refinishing into the top portion of the dining room, as the boards from the kitchen extended into that portion of the dining room. The dividing line for the refinishing work and what was not to be refinished was just the next parallel board, which was under the dining room rug, so it was a natural dividing point. The dustless sanding proceeded well, and they took great care to go under cabinets and right up to the edges of the floor seams without going into the areas that were not being refinished. Two men worked for a number of hours that first day without interruption, and they were very courteous and professional. They also took great care to match my floor color exactly with the stain, which was put on that first day and left to dry overnight. Again, the care they took not to spill over onto the areas that were not being redone was exceptional. The next morning the first coat of poly was applied very quickly and left to dry all day and overnight. The final day, Richard came with one of the men who had worked on the floor. He buffed the first coat of poly, and took care to match the newly refinished floor to the rather faded sheen of the unrefinished portions of the floor. He also took care to wipe away any stray dust left on the adjacent flooring. Then he applied the final coat of poly. The floors look wonderful, and someone would have to know that some portions of the flooring were not refinished to be able to guess where the refinishing work started and stopped. There was only a very fine film of dust that was left on the counters, etc. after the work was completed, and it was easily wiped off. (I don't think there IS such a thing as 100% dustless sanding!) Richard also had some suggestions on maintenance, which I appreciated. My husband is also very pleased with how the floors turned out. We received great value for the price, and we would certainly use RC Hardwood Floors again.
Description of Work: The wood floors in my back hall and kitchen were scratched and worn and needed refinishing, but the rest of the wooden flooring in the attached dining room and front hall did not need refinishing. Anyone refinishing the floors had to match the color on the refinished floor to the existing adjacent flooring areas which were not going to be refinished.

These guys did a fantastic job. The dustless sander was amazing- I could not believe how really dust-free the job was. They did most of the sanding the first afternoon, and finished sanding and doing the first two coats the next day, which was a full day. They got every bit of dirt and crud off the floors, filled all the tiny nail holes they found from the old carpet strips, and did a beautiful job with the refinishing. The oil based finish was a little darker than I thought it would be (I have water-based polyurethane upstairs, which gives a very light finish) but I really love the honey gold color. I'm thoroughly pleased with the work and would recommend this company highly. I think the office could have been a little more clear about how the scheduling would work, as I had thought they'd arrive early the first day but they didn't come until early afternoon, and I had been under the impression that the first day would be the big long day. It turned out not to be a problem for me but if my boss were not so flexible it might have been a bit difficult. I had scheduled the work over the phone and took my estimate of the square footage without sending someone out to look at the house to estimate the job, which seemed to surprise the refinishing person. Again, it didn't turn out to be a problem but if it were someone who didn't know how to calculate area, it could have caused some difficulty if my estimate had been way off. Perhaps an estimator would have given me a more accurate sense of the schedule. Fortunately it all worked out well in the end and I just love my floors.

Rich for some reason submitted two quotes last spring. One was about $100 more than the other for the same work, so naturally I accepted the smaller quote. I expected an email from RC Hardwood Floors a week or so before the job was supposed to start, confirming the start date and specifying what was expected from us as far as room prep was concerned. About 24 hours before they were due to start, I contacted them for confirmation and prep information. Work went smoothly and they were prompt about returning for additional coats. I am a little disappointed that their floor edger left a small groove in my baseboard and that they left sawdust on our drive without clean up, but overall I thought they did a good job.

RC Hardwood Floors were professional in how the appointment was scheduled and rescheduled (to accommodate my needs) . The workers came on time, worked diligently, and did an amazing job sanding and refinishing very, very old and seriously damaged hardwood floors. They put down two coats of polyurethane and came back the next day to apply the third coat. I expected dust /grit. There was none. The owner called me several times to discuss and confirm exactly what was and was not to be done. He advised me on the type of final polyurethane finish for the floor He patiently explained my choices. His manner was pleasant ?never condescending. I selected semi-gloss. I am very happy with the job.
Description of Work: I am renovating an apartment . I had a $299 Big Deal coupon for 250 sq ft (one room) and had them sand and refinish a second room of similar size for an additional $500. This was one unexpectedly nice experience from beginning to end. (I have had some dreadful encounters with contractors.)

Richard & his team from RC Hardwood floors refinished the hardwood floors in my 120+year old home (the floors are original). He did a fantastic job - I was very unsure about whether the floors could be refinished at all and wanted each prospective contractor to come out & look at them in person before giving me a quote. Richard was great-he was the first and only contractor to look at the floors and say-definitely! He made me very comfortable about the job and really accomodating, including doing one room before all others, just so that I could be sure I'd be happy with results before doing all the floors. Since he did the worst room first (kitchen, which had been horribly damaged & stained by years of use and water), I knew I was in good hands when I saw the results-seriously, a world of difference! He did excellent work refinishing the floors, staircases, and repairing certain existing damaged portions of the floors at my request. I cannot recommend his work highly enough-he is absolutely someone I would work with again.

Overall, we had a fantastic experience with RC Hardwood! Richard is really friendly and always on-time -- early actually! We had an unusual situation as our floors are deck flooring (very thick wood beams that are the ceiling of the downstairs) and had never been refinished (~30 yrs old). They were in bad shape! Richard came in and gave us an estimate that was close to the lowest bid of 3. We really liked him, so went ahead even though his bid was ~2% higher. They started on time, and actually finished a day early. We moved out of the house while they were working to avoid fumes (we have young children), and that allowed them to put on a coat in the evening one day. The did a fantastic job matching the other wood on the banister and in a newer part of the house. Everything looks very beautiful. I had no idea the floors could look that good. There was a minor issue in one spot, but Richard fixed it the next available business day that we could accommodate without any fuss. Tremendous work! We highly recommend them.
Description of Work: We had a flight of stairs and upstairs wood flooring refinished. The stairs were stained to match the banister and the flooring left natural to match abutting newer wood flooring.

When we bought the house, we knew there was hardwood flooring underneath all the carpeting on the first floor. When RC Hardwood's Angie's list deal came up, I looked over their reviews and their website and decided to go for it. We arranged a date to get the work done via email. They were always very professional and prompt in their communication. So I tore up the carpets, moved all the furniture out of the room and made way for them to come. Before they arrived, the floors were a dark brown. They were stained and dotted with paint and just in general spotted and lifeless. The two guys who came to do the work showed up on time, were nothing put polite and got straight to work. Not that I expected them to lollygag, but their efficiency was a pleasant surprise. The results are AMAZING. I didn't know that such beautiful wood existed under what was there before. The stains are gone. The paint is gone. I'm only sorry that I had to leave before they were finished and didn't come back until after they were gone (they locked up!) so I could tell them in person just how fabulous a job they did and just how much of a difference it made. I suppose the only other things I would say is what to expect. Yes, their equipment has vacuums and there is far, far less dust then there otherwise could be (I've sanded and routered and build cabinets. My basement floor has gotten so covered in sawdust it looks like a sandy beach) So there could be some dust. I'm sure that if I had moved most of my furniture out of the way, they would have moved the rest or helped me move the rest, but I did move it all out of the way before they got there. I figured it was the least I could do. I believe you get out what you put in and I didn't hire people to move my furniture, I hired people to redo my floors. I would definitely hire them again. In fact, I'm eying the carpeting that is covering hardwood in the other parts of my house and wondering not if I'll pull it up, but when because I know these guys will get the job done and get it done well.

I bought an Angie's big deal for floor refinishing by these guys and had them just to our kitchen. All went perfectly so I had them do the rest of the house, about 1300 s.f. that need refinishing. We did it in two stages. My wife and I were away but they took care of everything perfectly. They did exactly what they said they'd do, when they said they'd do it and it came out beautifully! They were flexible and responsive to my questions and concerns. They offered to move the furniture but said that would be expensive and suggested that we could do it ourselves or have a mover do it, which we did and all worked out great. We love the floors and, while it is a pain to move everything around, these guys made the experience as painless as it could be.

Horriible. I will have to take R.C. Hardwood Floors & Richard Cotton to court to get my deposit back.
Description of Work: This contractor did not meet his contract in any way. He does not return phone calls. Richard Cotton requires a 50% deposit up front before he will put you on his schedule then he does not meet the scheduled starting date. He has not returned my deposit after I cancelled the job for breach of contract. In my opinion Richard Cotton is the worst kind of contractor possible. He shows not remorse for lying to me and refusing to return my deposit. He even taunted me when I told him I was going to write this review. I would have nothing to do with this contractor ever.

Hopefully, our past reviews on actual work done will be enough, however, this customer’s post regarding not returning calls, and not meeting scheduling date are 100% untrue. We actually take our work schedule very seriously as we know every customer’s individual schedule is important. It is a huge inconvenience to have floors done as we always tell customers, but the outcome is well worth it, especially with the proper planning. We actually scheduled this gentleman’s project two months before, had him sign a contract stating that we would arrive to do the work when we agreed upon doing it. The date was actually decided upon in an email, not actually on the contract, but was agreed on none the less. At that time we told the member in order for us to come in and sand and refinish and/or patch your floors, the room has to be completely empty. Where we were also scheduled to do patchwork, the walls and drapes needed to be down as well, as though our sanding procedure is dust free, the need to saw through the damaged flooring and use of a table saw in the room we are working on, is not dust free. It was our understanding the room was going to be 100% empty. The day of the scheduled job, we called to let the member know we were on our way and he basically told us we could not get into the property on that day and to do it the next day. This is a very busy season for us, and this week in particular was jam packed, but we agreed to come on the following day to try and accommodate the member, again, reiterating that the room needs to be empty and that we were not able to move furniture, with exception to any large pieces he might need help moving. He did not mention needing help at that time. So on the following day when our installer arrived alone, to a locked up house, he peered into the window and noticed that none of the furniture had been moved at all. With two days now past his scheduled start date, we emailed the member that due to the inability to enter the house or begin work, as the room was not empty, we would need to reschedule his project to a later time. Obviously, he was not pleased, but hopefully future customers will respect the decision we made to move on to another customer who was patiently waiting and prepared for our arrival. He claimed that he had hired someone to move his furniture at 10 am, and that he was actually there helping move the furniture until 10:30. However, we were scheduled between 10 and 11, we were there at 10:00am, the house was not only locked up but nothing had been moved out of the room in question, and there was nobody in or around the property at that time. He claimed our installer was lying. We gave him the benefit of the doubt and even offered to come back the following day, to complete his job and move on, if not, we would gladly return his deposit. He declined our offer to come back and requested his money back, which we did sending it certified via US Post to be sure he received it in a timely manner. His claims of us not honoring a schedule are false. His claims that we would need to go to court for him to get his deposit are false, and his claims of us not returning phone calls are absolutely false. Pretty much everything he posted here regarding the job he scheduled and then cancelled, are false, and again, I hope our past reviews overshadow this customer’s lack of professionalism and business skills. We wish the member the best of luck in all his future endeavors and hope he is able to find someone who has a more flexible and available schedule for his own flexible project time frame.

These guys are the real deal. And you don't hear grumbling and negativity--they laugh and whistle and listen to their boom box. They're just nice guys and do an unbelievable job. I want the other room with similar floor done right away. In the meantime, I haven't put anything back in that room. I think it's "cured" by now, but I just enjoy looking at it--bare and rich and beautiful. Thank you Richard & Company! If you want a lift at your house, look at your floors. Nothing is as gorgeous as a newly-refinished wood floor. And they're the guys that can do it.
Description of Work: I have pine floors which I understand are softer than other wood floors and so less forgiving and harder to work on. The floors haven't been touched in over 20 years. Plus, I wanted them stained walnut. I bought the maximum amount of coupons and arranged a time for the work to be performed. On the night before Richard and/or his crew were to come, I came down with food poisoning and had to cancel. Richard later very graciously rescheduled. Two men came on a Thursday morning. They hadn't been made aware that the floors were pine and would take more work. For instance, they had to nail each and every square down further into the wood so that they wouldn't protrude and prevent the sander, buffer etc from working. Do you know how many nails there are in a fair-sized dining room? A BUNCH. But they simply got on their knees and started hammering. When they had finished sanding, honestly, the floors looked like new wood. I couldn't believe it. And then when I expressed the shade I wanted, they got the very one the first time. The two worked without stopping 4 or 5 hours. Staining that floor--the way you have to bend down to do it in a baseball catcher's position. . . not easy. Hey I know I sound starry eyed, but at the end of the day that floor was beautiful. The next two mornings, Richard came by and poly-urethaned the floor, buffed it--the finish is a matte finish that looks very rich.

At first we had a bit of a rocky time communicating and trying to set up a time to have an estimate done, but they were super busy because they had a great deal through angie's list, so they're forgiven. We took part in the deal (50% up to 300 sq feet of floor sanding), so it was a very good deal. After we finally were able to set everything up and establish the work to be done, Richard was super responsive to my many emails and questions, they came to do the work as scheduled and finished as scheduled. The floors look great, we will definitely use them again when we need our floors refinished in the future.

Bought one of their big deals. They responded immediately looking to find a schedule to do work. Tentatively fixed it for the date that service was eventually performed on. This call happened over a month before the date of service and they were told to call and finalize date of service on a number other than the one they had on file. There was a slight mix up with phone numbers from their end leading us to think that they had forgotten about performing the service. Called them to remind them which is when we found out about the number mix up. This is the only reason they dont get an "A" for professionalism. They eventually turned up when they said they would and finished it in the time they said they would. Very easy and good natured people. They dont come across as "corporate" service providers at all - but that is a compliment. Ultimately they did a great job. Completely satisfied.
Description of Work: Dont know the details of what they did to our floor but they may have sanded it down before refinishing/re coating it. The floor looks nothing like it used to - which was quite bad with lots of splotches. They did consult us with respect to what level of shine we wanted and it came out looking great. Its now the best looking room in the house.

It was a great experience. Rich and his office manager, Renee, were terrific to deal with from start to finish. All emails and phone calls were answered or returned promptly and professionally and they were very nice. Rich and his team arrived on time on the scheduled day and were complete three days later. The floors look beautiful and I intend to use their services when I am ready to have the remaining floors refinished.
Description of Work: Rich and his team removed wall-to-wall carpeting in two bedrooms and refinished the floors.

I decided to have a small three season porch redone and I saved the flooring for the end. RC Hardwood Floors, came in, and brought new life into the old, sad looking floor. They were very clean (virtually no dust!!), prompt and took pride in their work. Will definitely call them again for all my flooring needs.
Description of Work: I purchased one of the coupons from Angie's List for hardwood floor refinishing, and I could not have been more happy than I was with RC Hardwood Floors. I just needed the floor in a small three season porch refinished and they turned out amazing.

Well the floors came out looking great but dealing with RC didn't go nearly as well. I hired RC because they told me that they could start the job on a Friday and get it finished over a weekend. This was important because it allowed myself, my 2 year old son, pregnant wife and dog to get out of town for the weekend so they didn't have to deal with the fumes. I scheduled RC to come on Friday the 18th and expected them to work through Saturday to get the floors done confirming with them twice after the appointment was made. On the day of the job, the crew arrived on time but they had no idea about the time frame for the job, thinking that the job would start on Friday and they would finish sometime next week. I told the guys that I only made arrangements for I only made arrangements for the weekend and the guys told me that they despite the mix up that it would be "no problem" to sand and get at least two coats of varnish done by Saturday but if I wanted a third they would have to come back Monday. I wasn't thrilled about this change of plan but in an effort to make this work I scheduled another night at the place we were staying so we could leave Monday morning drop the kid off at school go straight to work, floors would get finished and be dry by the time we get home. Well it didn't happen this way. Later that Friday I get a email from RC saying that the crew can't work on Saturday and the floors wouldn't be done until Tuesday. I told RC what a difficult position this put me in logistically and financially and he responded by telling me that I didn't need to stay at a hotel, I could stay at home because they do jobs at places with newborns and pregnant women all the time and to just air the place out. Meanwhile that's only part of the issue, I literally have no place to sleep or use the bathroom in our place because I put all furniture in those rooms. To make an already long story short, the next few days were a huge pain. We had to drive to RI and drop the kid and dog off at my parents place then so my wife and I could work and then had to drive back to pick them up on Tuesday night. After hours of airing the place out my wife and I managed to sleep at out place surrounded by crap. Again, the work that RC did was great but not worth all I had to go through. I could have gotten somebody else just as good to do it over three weekdays for 25% cheaper, not to mention all the extra I spent to work around their screw up. I was let down by the company's service and professionalism.

Response from RC Hardwood Floors
In response to the above commentary from Angie’s Member, our apologies for your inconveniences that your endured. Unfortunately, whenever floors or any sort of construction is done in a person’s home, there is always going to be some sort of inconvenience. We do try to accommodate everyone and their schedules to the best of our ability, however, we cannot always, especially when work is started at the beginning of a weekend. I’m not sure there was ever a promise to work through the weekend by Richard, and as he is the owner, that is the only one who knows who can and cannot work. As we stated after you initially purchased the coupon for 50% off the price of refinishing, this is a very busy time of year anyway, and with all the coupon sales we have had over the last couple of months, trying to keep the schedule as smooth as possible has been a bit more of a struggle than usual. Most people are understanding of this situation and if there are scheduling concerns they are brought up before work begins. Again, apologies for the inconveniences you incurred. Enjoy your floors and best of luck to you and your family.

RC Hardwood Floors delivers beautiful, high quality work and equally awesome customer service. This was by far the best experience I've had working with a contractor (and the earlier experiences were positive ones that set a relatively high standard). Richard Cotton is professional, responsive, honest and fair, and also personable and easy to work with. When I originally spoke with him about the work I wanted done (removing and replacing wall-to-wall carpeting in a master bedroom and on two flights of winding stairs with hardwood flooring), he provided a prompt estimate for the floor work and referred me to a couple of different contractors for the stair work. Richard wound up synching up his schedule with the stair person whom I ultimately hired since there were interdependencies; the work could not have gone more smoothly. Richard and his assistant Mike removed the old carpeting and installed new prefinished floors in the large, master bedroom over 3-4 days. I was initially concerned about my not being able to move the heaver pieces of furniture out of the room before the flooring work started, but it wasn't a problem -- Richard and Mike just did the work in stages, one half of the room at a time, shifting the bureau, armoire, bed, mattress, and bookcase to the other side of the room as needed. The stair work was appreciably more complicated because of the winding staircase, and Richard's having to cut custom pieces of wood to fit 14 pie-shaped stair treads. After all the treads were in, Richard stained the entire staircase, matching the color to the new pre-finished red oak in the bedroom. Richard was on top of the details from start to finish, taking care of the routine stuff without my having to ask. He also made follow-up visits to fix a couple of scratches -- a small one that I created, and a larger one added by the people who clean my house (and should have known better). I felt terrible about the damage, but Richard was totally gracious and fixed both problems. The new floors and stair work look awesome and I wouldn't hesitate to hire Richard again or recommend him to others. He's a committed professional with high standards who keeps his word and delivers.
Description of Work: Removed carpet from master bedroom and installed prefinished red oak flooring; installed unfinished red oak flooring in 14 triangular stairtreads on stairway; sanded and finished 2 flights of stairs with 1 coat of stain and 2 coats of poly.

Another kudo for RC Hardwood Floors. Richard promptly came out to provide an estimate after our inquiry. He thoroughly explained the procedure and timing. A date to start work was provided and the installation begun on the specified date as promised. Day 1, the old flooring was removed. Days 2 & 3, the new, unfinished oak flooring was installed. Day 4, the floor was sanded and two coats of polyurethane applied. Day 5 sanding and the third coat of polyurethane put down. Day 5, the floor was buffed and the final poly coating applied. Richard and his crew paid rigorous attention to every detail. A quality job was done throughout. The final product is beautiful. We would not hesitate to use RC Hardwood Floors again. Richard is extremely personable, straightforward and honest. He explains every step of the way and delivers exactly what is promised. His crew is likewise a pleasure to deal with and they work very hard.

The work went extremely well. Rick showed up right on time to give an estimate and was able to re-arrange his schedule to meet our needs. The floors had been done by a DIY'er in the past and had some pretty bad damage which they were able to fix and almost hide completely. The second floor was a beaer, when the quote was given I hadn't taken up all the old carpet yet. And when I did I saw that the floor had alot of oooold varnish. Ricks guys hand scraped alot of the old varnish up, and had to do a ton of extra work to get the job done. All being said they stayed on the original estimate and I couldn't be happier with our hardwood. I can't wait we have them do the top floor.
