Pat came over determined what needed to be done and got back quickly with a quote that laid out very clearly what would be done. He was able to schedule the work right away and had several guys work on it, so it was completed in one day. Everything went very smoothly. If I need a carpenter again Pat will definitely be the first one I call.

Pat was responsive from the very beginning, and honest about timeline and prices. The team worked hard and clearly enjoy their carpentry work. They completed the jobs efficiently and carefully and asked our opinion on progress along the way, being flexible and helpful with advice. Pat designed the shelving, desk and mantel according to our wishes and budget, and did an excellent job; the work made big improvements to our home. It is also clear he values his co-workers and is fair and honest. He is a pleasure to work with and we will hire him again for future needs.

ABSOLUTELY. THE. BEST. CONTRACTOR. that I've found in 30+ years of owning old homes. If he's available, don't even think about using someone else. Pat O'Connell has great carpentry skills, experience and creativity. He sets and achieves high quality work standards for himself, his crew and his subcontractors. He is 100% a man of his word - responsible, reliable and totally trustworthy. He is also an excellent communicator, with a rare ability to translate construction concepts & trade talk into layperson's language. I had a 20+ page list that marched room by room through the whole job, from A to Z, and I got bids from several companies. Pat was the only one to put the whole list right into his contract, which had fair & square terms that matched real progress on the job to the payment schedule. When items changed during the job, communication was open & easy: he showed enormous flexibility and had great ideas to improve on my plans while staying within budget. He was ever patient, courteous and good humored. He brought similarly skilled carpenters Enda & Mattie to the job, along with excellent subcontractors for plaster, paint/stain, floors, and tile. I did use my own plumber , electrician, & AC company (not a good idea on my part); but he accommodated that pleasantly. He coordinated scheduling with them all. He pushed himself and everyone else to keep the job moving so that inspections were finished & the job was completed on time. Pat honored my request to be called whenever there was a job decision to be made, whether large or small. He gave advice and then dutifully implemented whatever I wanted even if it was different than his recommendation. So a couple of times I learned the hard way that I should have done as he suggested. ;-) But the respect he showed for his customer's preferences was typical of his civility and professionalism. No job goes 100% smoothly, and it's the rough spots where you really learn if you chose the right contractor. When a tried&true tile subcontractor did shoddy work installing tile on the bathroom walls and refused to make good, Pat stepped right up to the plate. He and his crew spent a killer hot summer day tearing out the walls and putting up new ones, to make it ready for a different & terrific tile guy he hired - at his own expense. He also paid for all the new tile that was needed. He inflicted none of this headache, aggravation and expense on me - he just took responsibility, made arrangements, and got it all fixed. A note on price: apart from windows, paint, plaster, and new flooring, the price listed here doesn't include materials, which I wanted to pay separately, and it doesn't include the cost of the plumber, electrician & AC contractor who I hired directly. Pat O'Connell's bid was neither the lowest nor highest that I got, but the job he did was most definitely the best value.
Description of Work: Pat O'Connell was both carpenter & quasi-general contractor on a total rehab of a 4-bedroom, 2-story unit in a 100 year old 2-family home: new kitchen & tile bathroom; all new windows & ceilings; some new doors, woodwork, stairs, closets, shelves & cabinets; some structural work; new &/or refinished walls & floors throughout; new paint & stain; and a million other things.

Mr O'Connell is naturally talented and remarkably well educated and technically informed. He knows all the newest methods and materials available. I got 3 bids and I felt safest with his plans, proposals and price. One of the unknowns in remodeling an already damaged house is what comes when the outside boards are pulled off and there's something negative underneath. Pat was ready for anything but we lucked out and all materials needed were to hand. August, 2013 was a tough month, with heat in the high nineties and on other days pouring rain. Pat lost some time but he stayed with it. I always felt he and the crew were giving it their best and adjusting their schedule as they could.

Pat and his crew came by when they said they would and finished within the timeframe indicated. They were professional, provided candid feedback on what was a "should do" now (which we appreciated) and cleaned up after each day. They also kept us informed of what they were doing and why as the job went along. We have called on Pat again since this job and will use him going forward for any carpentry work.
Description of Work: Pat and his crew replaced siding on the upper front part of our house and in other area's as needed. He also replaced trim and a window sill in preparation for our house getting painted. Pat also came back as the house was getting painted to replace trim that was rotted.

After we removed the sink in preparation for laying down a new floor we discovered the subfloor had rotted. After a frantic call to Pat he was able to fit me into his schedule. He and his crew cut away the rotted wood, shored up a joist, and laid down a new subfloor in the affected area. He didn't try to sell me on replacing the whole thing and was very pleasant about the whole job. I'd call him again in a heartbeat.

Pat and his team were prompt and did exactly what they said they'd do. They were pleasant to work with and worked hard to ensure the quality of the job. They executed every task asked of them and worked hard to make sure that we were happy with the finished product. On one piece of the project I communicated that I was unhappy with the choice of the replacement door and after much finagling and custom work by Pat's team, the door still did not meet my expectations. Pat removed the door and let me replace it with another door which fit my requirements much better. I have worked with other contractors locally who would have told me to pound sand and let this issue end our relationship -- I can't say how pleased I was that Pat saw the forest for the trees on this one. We'll have him and his team back to work on more projects for our home and I recommend him to many other families. It's rare to find a contractor who has such focus on customer service. I can't say how please I am with his professionalism and focus on customer service. Pat is a true gem.
Description of Work: We had Pat and his team install basement windows and replace two double hung windows in our home. Both double hungs required rebuilding of the sills/trim around the windows. All windows were insulated. We also had him replace a door on our first floor and reframe a door in our 3rd floor attic and make custom doors for two openings on the 3rd floor. Lastly we had him remove an AC unit that was installed in our master bedroom wall and reframe/stucco the opening. Part of the project included sub work to his plasterer to fix walls that were removed or cut into when we had our house insulated and had an AC/Heating system installed last summer.

Pat O'Connell was very professional; the work was completed to spec and on time. He showed up on time every day (or called to reschedule in advance in the case of a blizzard) and rearranged his schedule to accommodate mine. His subcontractors (painters, floor installers, plasterer, electrician) were all equally professional, and Pat showed up personally to introduce everyone new. They cleaned up the work area every day. Pat answered all my questions and went out of his way to make sure I was happy with every little detail. When I complained about the work of one painter, the painter returned to fix everything and then Pat replaced the painter with someone else. § 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 - = Backspace Tab q w e r t y u i o p [ ] Return capslock a s d f g h j k l ; ' \ shift ` z x c v b n m , . / shift alt alt Preferences Preferences § 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 - = Backspace Tab q w e r t y u i o p [ ] Return capslock a s d f g h j k l ; ' \ shift ` z x c v b n m , . / shift English Deutsch Español Français Italiano Português ??????? alt alt Preferences

Description of Work: Pat and his team installed a sliding glass door for us. They removed the old, standard door, cut the space for the slider, and installed the new Andersen sliding door and trim. Pat O'Connell came out to my house to provide an estimate for the job. He arrived on time and within a day or so sent me an estimate. I had several questions about how the work was to be done and the materials to be used and Pat was very good about responding to all my questions. I found Pat very professional and he sent a scope of work and contract within a few days of clarifying all my questions. Pat constructed a new replacement window, glazed, primed and painted it with 2 coats of paint before bringing it to the house for installation. The rake board was also painted before installation. All the work was done in one day and pretty much on schedule. The job was well done and the clean up was very good. I found Pat knowledgeable and very competent, and he was good about explaining the the choice of materials to use for the job, e.g., they type of wood that would be good for the window. I highly recommend Pat for carpentry work and would not hesitate to call him for future work.

We called because our wood floors had begun to sag and were worried that we might need another support beam in the basement. We have a piano near that part of the floor and weren't sure if that was making it worse. He took our call and was actually able to come out the same day to take a look. He inspected our floors as well as the ceiling in the basement (it's a finished basement) and ultimately concluded that there was nothing seriously wrong. We appreciated his honesty and not having us waste our money on an unnecessary job. He also pointed out that the piano was well supported from below. He suggested that we monitor the situation for any changes and gave us pointers on what to look for. He seemed very thorough and knowledgeable. We would definitely call him again.
Description of Work: He came to see if our sinking floors were a sign of something structurally wrong. No additional work was required at this time.

I e-mailed Patrick for an estimate on replacing two (2) exterior doors and made an appointment for today. Patrick showed up on time and was more than helpful in telling me what I should and should not do to the doors. Patrick told me honestly that the doors were perfectly fine as they are solid wood. He suggested replacing the glass on the side door and having it stripped and painted. The main door he suggested a different color. Patrick could have easily persuaded me to have the job done but he was honest in trying to save me the expense stating it was totally NOT necessary. I would HIGHLY recommend Patrick if you need an honest and true carpenter that truly loves his job. It was so refreshing to deal with a contractor so honest to the customer and watching out for my money explainging the project was totally not necessary. O'Connell Carpentry will be on my list when I need other projects done for sure as he is highly recommended and a pleasure to talk to! Thanks Patrick!!

Pat was very responsive and came when he said he would. When I originally talked to him...I forgot to mention to use mahogany wood for the sills but when I got to the house...the job was already done...and he had used mahogany. He and his partner were very cheerful and charmed my tenants. We had him look at other projects and he is going to do them a little later as he is so busy. He does great work.

Patrick was very pleasant during our first two conversations. During our first one we made a date for him to come out and give me an estaminet which was for sept. 21st/12 at 6:00 p.m on the 21st when he was ten minutes late I called to variify that he was still coming. He says in very apologetic tone "I'm so sorry I thought it was for the 28th" so he says I will be there on the 28th. Well tonight the 27th he leaves me a message saying he has work booked thought the next year and can't come out to give me an estimate. Waiting for him we lost 2 weeks and he was very unprofessional . Do not use Patrick O' Connell.

Response from O'Connell Carpentry and Remodeling
In my initial conversation with the member I had wrote in my book the 28th and had apologized for the mix up. After I had made the new appointment on the 27th I received word that I had been awarded a substantial project and would not be able to devote the proper time to her project. I immediately contacted her to let her know this and had a recommendation for another contractor but the member hung up on me before I could give her the information I do not think I could have been any more professional in my approach.I wish her all the best with her project

Fantastic! Pat and his team were a pleasure to work with. From start to finish, Pat exemplified professionalism and responsiveness. He is extremely trustworthy and dependable. We had a lot of work done in the basement, and I knew, just from the age of the house, that we would likely run in to problems once walls and ceilings were ripped down. Sure enough, we did. But Pat attacked the problem (water damage) had on and went to work right away on getting people on that could resolve the issue. I never once felt unsure or taken advantage of. Pat made a difficult situation as easy for us to manage as possible. Pat is also very detail oriented. There were minor things that I missed that he pointed out, that he easily could have gone without saying something and would have made his life easier. For instance, I purchased door knobs and pulls for new doors we had him install and I didn't realize that not all of them matched. He very easily could have slapped them on and then when/if I noticed said "well, you picked them out", but that is not how he operates, and I fully appreciated that about him. I would never hesitate to hire him again or to recommend him to someone else. I would give him an A+ if I could!

Pat stopped by during the week to make an initial assessment of our porch damage. He returned on a Saturday morning to remove some woodworking to carefully examine the damage and give us an accurate quote (another company neglected to do so). His quote was fair, but we decided to go with another contractor who could also perform the roofing work. We would definitely call Pat again for his thoroughness.

I have found that word of mouth and reports such as these to be the best means by which a home owner finds quality contractors. After reviewing several local contractors and selecting Patrick (O'Connell Carpentry) - I must convey to you "stop looking" - he is your guy. Trust me - I am a person that beats the heck out of anything I do, if it is buying a car, dishwasher or lawn mower. After meeting Patrick and his partner (Enda), I quickly realized some things are not worth wasting time on. Patrick is absolutely FANTASTIC. We found him to be extremely professional and upfront on exactly what needed to be done. I am a neat freak and inspect everything, Patrick and team were very professional when i asked questions, but honest when conveying I had no idea about what I was talking about. We ran into a few minor challenges (i.e. hidden pipes). Instead of making the issues more costly or allowing for construction delays - Patrick quickly suggested a solution that would modify the project and not impact the overall cost. Additionally, during the project my wife and I decided not to use molding around the overhead beam. To my surprise he adjusted the bill (at no request of mine) to account for the collective savings. I respect he is in business to make money and quality does cost money - we are extremely happy with the quality of work Patrick demonstrated, along with the sub-contractors that did the plaster work (excellent at what they do). I have found the overall experience so enjoyable, I am now working with Patrick's electrician and kitchen designer (future Patrick projects). We all read several reviews and never really know what to think, i can assure you that what you pay for with Patrick you will get 10 x in quality and professionalism. In a world of project delays and scheduling conflicts - its not easy to manage home life and projects within your home - Patrick and team arrived on the day we selected, were in our house for 2 days and left it cleaner than we did - even my wife was impressed.....making things easy I wish anyone using O'Connell Carpentry the best- you won't be disappointed.
