When I went outside to inspect the progress on the fix, Ben explained to me that he found a couple of leaks. He also told me that the backhoe had hit one of the pipes that I could see that was visibly spraying water. He also told me that the cause of the original leak was occurring beneath the house. He pointed out the cave like hole underneath the house that was caused by the water pushing out the dirt around it. Ben was patient, nice and personable.
I was charged a total of $2675 for this job which included the leak detection service, find and repair. This time I was told I would not be charged tax for the service. I did not seek out a quote from another company for this job. We trusted them since they had already repaired a slab leak for us two months earlier.
For drilling four holes to find and fix the leak, we were charged $2000 plus $140 in tax. Powerhouse Plumbers was within the lower range of a quote we had received from another plumbing company to the do the same job.
From my first phone I could tell I called the right place. They had excellent customer service from start to finish, they were always on time, and very professional. They explained everything and there were NO hidden costs. Powerhouse Plumbers is now the company we will always use. I would highly recommend this company to anyone.
I had such a great experience with this company and couldn't have been more pleased. It's nice to know there are still good companies out there that actually care about their customers and Powerhouse Plumbers is definitely one of those companies.
I had a flooded basement and had Mr. Plumber come out. They cleaned the drain and said I needed a new sewer. Their price for a sewer replacement was $9500.00. I was going to go with them but thought I should get a few estimates first. I called two other places and one was a little cheaper than the $9500.00 and then along came Powerhouse Plumbers. They explained the entire process from start to finish. I was a little hesitant because of the other reviews on Angie's List but went ahead and decided to try them out. I was pleasantly surprised! They were very professional and did excellent work. They answered every question I had and responded to every email and phone call. They were very punctual, they arrived exactly when they said they would. The price they gave me was the price I paid. There were no hidden or additional costs. You can tell they care about the work they do and how they treat their customers, which is very hard to find these days. They have a customer for life and I would recommend this company to anyone.
and I paid them in full in good faith that they would make sure that I was "ready to plant grass seed in June."
Then, as we tried to understand their process for restoring the yard, the nightmare really began. The company was impossible to get a hold of which escalated the situation. Their receptionist never answered the phone when we called and rarely returned our phone calls when we left messages. She was immediately defensive and very hard to work with even when we just had simple questions that needed to be answered. The company strung me along, making me believe that they were going to make everything right and when I started pressing them as to when they were going to restore my yard and my neighbor?s yard, they announced that they were ?done with me.?
Number one, (background: They had to put several tons of gravel around the drainage pipe which of course meant several tons of dirt would need to be carried away.) Powerhouse now claims that all they said they would do was move the dirt back over the hole that they made and that the now 3 ? 4 foot mound in my yard was not their responsibility. They wrote rough grade on the contract and that was what rough grade is. Apparently the definition of rough grade changes month by month for this company. I?ve asked three different contractors what rough grade is and they?ve all given me different definitions. That?s beside the point. I didn?t know what rough grade meant and trusted Brandon?s definition. In January, Brandon described rough grade to me as ?ready to plant grass seed.? His definition changed in April. What I know for sure is that he did not say to me, ?by the way we?re going to do about $4000 (based on several estimates) of damage to your property and to your neighbor?s property that you will be responsible for once we leave.?
Number two, this company promised my neighbor in January that they would not do any damage to their yard and that what ?little? they might do, they would restore to its original state. They finally put this in writing to me in April, but they then sent out someone who looked at the 3 ? 4 foot mound between our 2 houses and said that Powerhouse would need to grade this first because he couldn?t do that. (I asked him if this was a rough grade and he laughed and said ?this is no grade.?) So we waited another month with no one returning our phone calls to tell us what was going on. Finally, the same guy came out and made an attempt to grade the yard (even though he had said he didn?t do that sort of thing to begin with) but the grade was totally messed up when he was finished. The entire grade from my neighbors? house to mine sloped toward my house. Now, $13, 000 later, I still have mud and water coming into my basement as an actual result of this project.
Number three, this company told me that they would only have to take out a small portion of my sidewalk if anything at all. In fact they damaged the entire 55 feet of sidewalk back to the gate AND, while they took 2 ? 3 slabs of concrete away, they left the rest of sidewalk, broken up and covered in hard clay, for me to contend with. The guy who did the original excavating for them came out, saw the mess and was furious. He took pictures. He called Brandon and told him that this wasn?t right. Brandon refused to respond.
Believe it or not, I could go on. Don?t even get me started about the sump pump. I understand that Powerhouse may have gotten in over their heads on this job and hadn?t done it enough to understand the kind of damage that they were going to do to my property. This actually gives them the benefit of the doubt, because if they did know, they deceived me. But there was no attempt to work at this until it was right. I would have met them half way, but they never even talked to me about a compromise. $13, 000 and they wouldn?t talk to me save the one time in April when they again made promises that they didn?t keep. Then they just announced that they were ?done with me? and in order to restore our own sanity, we?ve had to be done with them as well so we can move on, repair the damage and try to forget this awful nightmare.
One last note: my neighbors did write a review for Angie?s List as well. These people are the best neighbors that anyone could have. They are loved by the entire neighborhood and have been so patient and understanding in the midst of all this. It pains me to see the caricature of them that Powerhouse is trying to present in defense of their actions.
"When we first came to your residence, we cleaned the drain. You asked how we could make sure it never happened again? I never told you that you that you had a broken sewer. i stated that you had an offset in your clay piping in which roots were able to grow . We also discussed city sewer backups and preventative measures for such an event. You DID state how important your yard was to you. However, when I said that we could do a finished grade on your yard for $750.00, you declined saying that you were already into enough expense as it was. I also told you that dirt would need to be removed in order for your yard to be flat. We don't avoid phone calls and we take pride in our work. You did call me personally and ask me to take care of your yard. In an attempt to appease you, I came out of my own money to give you a service that you declined initially. I'm sorry it wasnt done to your expectations and standards. We also installed a faucet for free in yet another attempt to please you. Why no mention of these things? Sewer excavation standards define placing excavated dirt on top of ditch as "rough grade." I was very clear in this. Everything I said to you that day was documented on the invoice and we performed what was written, and initialed, by you, to the tee. The only things we did that were not on the invoice was the grading of your yard and the free faucet installation. The charges you incurred were WELL within reason for the scope of work performed. You NEVER paid for your yard to be put back in its original state. Look at the invoice one more time and recheck your facts. The fact is that we did everything we could to appease a customer who spent a lot of money on a new sewer and other various plumbing projects and obviously has buyers remorse. If you believe what you say to be true, sue for damages. Anything less is libel, and at worst, defamation of character."
