The company was established in 1972 as P&J Heating and Air Conditioning by Pete and Jim. In the late 1980's, Air Wise and Best Heating (established in 1948) joined the family and American Comfort Heating & Air Conditioning was formed. The year 2003 is here and American Comfort joins a national franchise to offer clients a higher level of service. One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning is here for the residential customers while maintaining the American Comfort name for the Commercial side of the business. It may seem like a lot of change, but, it was all done under one of the original owners. To this day, we are still family owned and operated.

He did arrive a little bit late, but he got the job done. Because I signed up for the service plan with them, they tuned my other furnace for me at no additional cost. Everything was excellent and they did a great job.

It was fine and they did a cleaning of 2 upstairs and downstairs furnaces. This was for an annual tune up. We used them for a problem that we also had over the summer. We contacted them back, because they were aware and familiarity with our devices. Just one technician came out. They were responsive after we purchased a Big Deal; so that was a good turn around. They also came out and did a follow up to the work they did in the summer.

The technician was courteous, punctual, and gave a very thorough explanation of the inspection results. My system is on the old side, and I got solid facts rather than a sales pitch or pressure to replace everything that day. They didn't treat me differently with the Big Deal, which I appreciated. (A Big Deal isn't always a coupon, it's really an audition for future projects.) I ended up calling back to sign up for the maintenance club, and I look forward to working with them again next season!

He was really nice and took his shoes off before he came into my house; he put booties on. He liked my dogs too and I enjoyed that. He worked on our furnace and it took him about an hour to do the tune-up. He told me what he did, what he thought might need to be done in the future and he wrote that on a piece of paper for my husband too. He called before he came and just let us know that he was on his way. I also want to add that he was very punctual told me what needed to be fixed and was very friendly too.

Called one hour heating a few days after buying the special. The next available time for an appointment was three weeks out. That irritated me a little, I'm guessing the Angie's list special buys are not a high priority. The technician called me on the date of service to give me a time when he would be here. He showed up at the time he said and was very professional. Put covers over his shoes, a good thing when you have light colored carpeting. He serviced the unit and explained a complicated venting system I have. He found one small problem, a capacitor near the end of it's life. Said it would be $200 to replace. I said no thanks. Looked up the part online, they range from $20-$40. Thats a heck of a markup for One Hour. I ordered it and will do that repair myself. The amount they wanted to charge left a bad taste in my mouth, but other than that it went well. Installer Art was very professional.

Thank you for the review and am sorry we were not able to schedule your tune up within and acceptable time frame. ALL tune ups (non emergency calls) are scheduled 2-3 weeks out and EVERYONE is scheduled accordingly. We do not discriminate just because someone has purchased a special. If for instance you had an emergency (No Heat), you would have been placed in the schedule that day in order to keep you and your family comfortable. The beauty of the Internet is that we can find parts for anything at a much lesser cost. However, and as all businesses, in order to provide you with excellent service, we have to cover our costs, (wages, work vehicles, fuel, insurance, rent, phones, etc...). Another benefit by utilizing our service is that we warranty the part as well as labor for two years whereas over the Internet you would receive a part only warranty for 30-60 days. We appreciate the opportunity to service your heating & air conditioning needs.

I purchased a big deal coupon for this company. We had an additional cost because we had them do the humidifier also. Everyone that I talked to there was really, really pleasant and nice. It was a very organized company. They called the night before to remind me they were coming. They called twenty minutes before the guy got here to tell me he was on his way. Extremely pleasant, I would use them again in a heart beat.

The technician was very friendly and professional. I bought a deal to have them come and clean my furnace, they did that and found a few problems. One was a gas leak that I feel I overplayed to have them fix, cost $100 for him to change a valve.

There was an emergency appointment that occurred in my window (which I totally get). I ended up waiting pretty much most of the day for the service man to come out. The woman I spoke with was nice enough to give me a set appointment time for 4pm. The man got there about 4:15-4:20 and I had somewhere to be. So, at that point I was in a rush and somewhat hurried him along. He was very nice though!

The provider arrived earlier than scheduled, which could have been a problem had there not been another adult present. The service person seemed knowledgeable, was very thorough and explained the full inspection results. He was not pushy about possible future repairs we might want to start thinking about, and even explained some routine maintenance we could do on our own. We appreciated his professionalism and the fact that he didn't push for further (higher priced) service once he had made his first contact with us.

The service man cleaned and tested the furnace and thermostat. Then he replaced the furnace filter that I had previously purchased. He also determined that the water supply to the humidifier had been turned off, which had been done by a service man I had repair the water softener last year.

My experience with One Hour: below I will explain that the next day after One Hour was here, I called another heating company I have used before, came to do the work One Hour was supposed to do, and you will see the contrast in services. I had called One Hour to set up a time and date the week before. They called the day before service to remind me. Service was to be between 1 and 6 on Wed., Nov. 6. Luckily, I was home before 1 because the technician showed up at 12:30. I had requested they call me about a half hour before arrival and that was not done. The tech was a nice person. He removed the panel from the front of the boiler type furnace. The two plates covering the entrance to the channel pipes carrying the gas on the bottom of the boiler, and below the heat exchangers that carry the water to be heated, were so very hot the tech could not remove them. He said the company should have told me to turn down the thermostat so the plates would have cooled before his arrival. This tech thought it would take too long for the cool down so he asked the company to send someone else later. The second tech came about 1 to 2 hours later and I did get a call before he arrived. The tech's name is Ed; there is an ID number on the invoice next to his name of 505. Once Ed realized the boiler furnace had been in the house since we moved in 41 years ago, he seemed intent on convincing me we should replace it. He said (and wrote on the invoice description he sent to the company), "-- half the boiler section were partially blocked; and on the invoice left with me "several flue passages plugged." He had a mirror to look up at the heat exchanger parts and on the far left one could see soot where the heat passes by the exchangers. I asked ed if he would clean off the soot and he said NO as he would have to take the whole thing ( the boiler) apart. When the second company came (I did not tell the tech of that company that One Hour had been there the day before and not even hint that I had some concerns about Ed and his statements). The second company's tech also looked with a mirror at the heat exchangers and showed me that there was only soot on the far left and a small area toward the front - and he easily cleaned not only that area but the whole of the heat exchangers using a wire brush from below them. All he had to do was remove the inner panel (4 screws), and he had removed the gas carrier pipes. This is in contrast to Ed saying this was a problem and he could not clean them except to take the whole thing apart. Ed tells me how inefficient the boiler is: after he had turned on the gas he says see how much heat is coming out by placing one's hand near the top front of the boiler - and I said you got the front panel off so some of the exhaust heat will come out there. (And after putting the front panel on the heat was not escaping there). He also said that so much heat was going out the exhaust pipe into the chimney that you could fry an egg on the exhaust pipe. I put my hand near the exhaust pipe and of course there is warmth, then I put my whole hand, palm, on the pipe and it was warm but no way exaggerated as he said. Ed pushed 3 times, you have to get a particular person out here from One Hour (maybe the name was Glen) and he will advise you on what type of new boiler you need. By this time, it is obvious That Ed's intent is to sell a new boiler when contrary to what he is saying (and the second company evaluation) that the boiler is functioning well - old yes but working well. Then Ed resorts to telling me and writing on his report "customer will run at his own risk" and he further tells me if he was me he would not use the furnace. That is a blatant scare tactic. Ed set down in the basement and typed out his report and then reads it to me using a profound voice and emphasizing he "highly recommend not running boiler but customer says it's OK. Customer will run at own risk." By that time my opinion was that Ed was totally untrustworthy. I rather think company management and owners know what their techs are doing, and this experience reflects poorly on this company. Keep in mind, the second company did a much more thorough cleaning (including the heat exchangers that Ed said he could not do). That tech said all is in working order and he estimated the efficiency of the boiler to be at what it was rated for. My advice to anyone dealing with One Hour is to be most careful. I made a mistake in contacting them and would never even consider them for anything re heating or AC.
Description of Work: Angies List had a Big Deal for $49 to have a furnace check-up by One Hour Heating and AC of Elk Grove Village. The purpose for a company to use the Big Deal at a low cost to the customer is to show that the company can provide competent, helpful and friendly service, and to impress a consumer to use their services in the future. One Hour has an A rating overall for Angie's list. Only after their being here did I carefully check the review write ups. In this year of 2013, there were 4 reviews stating problems with One Hour that I also unfortunately experienced. One review on 9/15 thought One Hour's purpose was to "upsell maintenance." The 7/11 review thought One Hour sells a cheap AC tune up then upsell customer on other services and repairs. The 6/23 review thought the Big Deal of One Hour was the company's way to try to sel their preferred customer package. On 1/20 the customer thought the cost of a replacement part was excessive and called the Big Deal price a "loss leader," the real intent being to influence a customer to purchase services they may not really need. How many other persons, not Angie's List members, or who did not write a review, we're treated in similar ways?

Thank you for your review, and I apologize for your experience with One Hour. I am familiar with this call as the first tech who was there called me very concerned as to why the boiler was at such a hot temperature. I explained to him that those old boilers do take a while to cool down and to give it a bit. After 20 minutes or so he called me back and said there is something not right it was way too hot, and sent me a picture of your boiler. The picture he sent me showed the front of your boiler charred black and orange. The actual metal outside cabinet was heating up so hot it was discoloring and burning. At this point I explained to the tech that there is something more going on with the boiler and this would need more than just normal maintenance. I asked him to shut it down so it could cool down, and dispatched a senior technician out to troubleshoot the problem. Upon his arrival he found that the spaces between your boiler tubes were plugged with soot, the boiler had been over heating for so long the cabinet was extremely burnt up, and the over all condition of the boiler was very poor as it has not been properly maintained. When the boiler tubes are sooted up as bad as yours are, more than “normal maintenance” and brushing needs to be done. What happens is none of the hot flue gases that heat your water can make it through the tubes into the flue and exit the house. The poisonous gases, and heat then backs out of the boiler and into your home. This can cause carbon monoxide levels in the home to rise, and the potential for fire due to all the excess heat and flames rolling out. The boiler cabinet top, and flue should be disassembled. The top plates of the boiler tubes should be disconnected, and removed. The entire burner tray and gas valve assembly should be removed. The spaces between each tube should be brushed out FROM THE TOP, and all the soot removed from the bottom with a vacuum. If your are able to break through and remove all the soot, the boiler should then be reassembled, and normal maintenance can then resume. Not to mention what is causing the boiler to soot? You don’t want to clean it and then not fix what is actually causing it to soot up or you will be back in the same situation the coming year. In most cases the cost to do this given the age of the boiler, and the damage caused to the boiler from it rolling out for a long period of time, and the efficiency of the boiler does not make sense. Most homeowners find that it may be in their best interest to pursue getting their options on replacement. Now for where we failed you as a company, my technician Ed should have provided you with a price to disassemble and properly clean the boiler. He should have stressed to you after giving you this price that given the age, and condition of the equipment, it may be in your best interest to pursue getting replacement options. He should have given you the proper information you needed to make an educated decision on what you would like to do going forward. It is clear to me that he did not do this. Knowing what he knows, and knowing that it would probably be best to replace the boiler, he tried to make the decision for you, and really only gave you one option. I can assure you that this is NOT the One Hour way. I can promise you I am going to make it a point to share this review with all of my technicians and set an example of why we have a certain way of presenting things, and why we give the client options. Again, I apologize for your experience. If there is anything I can do to make it up to you please feel free to contact me at the office. My name is Carl Sword and I am the Operations Manager. On a final note… I do not know who has serviced or maintained your boiler previously. It is obvious to me just by the pictures that were sent to me that it has not been done right and this has been an issue for some time. Coming in and running a brush through the plugged tube real quick from the bottom is NOT going to properly take care of your problem, nor has it in the past or this wouldn't be an issue today. I would seriously consider having the boiler properly cleaned if you are going to leave the boiler in operation.

Onehour was excellent in communications on date, time of arrival. I was called the day prior has a reminder. The two men who came to the house were extremely professional and extremely personable. Carl and Arturo (the repairmen) were just wonderful. They not only did a complete survey of my heating system, they showed it to us via televison! My wife and I were amazed at what we saw. We usually have our heater and A/C serviced every year. What we saw showed that a complete cleanring was never done, we had dust and lint to a point that it would have been a fire hazard. Carl explained to us why we had so much dust. We purchased an electronic filter that we can already tell a major difference in the dust level of the house. Onehour also had a very reasonable maintenance service that we felt comfortable in siging up with. We have FOUND our HVAC service. This is the second time I have used Angies list to find a service, with the high raitng I knew it would be good, but they were GREAT. Thanks Guys and thanks Angies list.

Thank you for the feedback and sorry we were not able to be the company of choice. When shopping for any home appliance, it is sometimes a hard decision. We are currently shopping to replace our refrigerator and it’s shocking to see how many choices you have. You can go from the least expensive refrigerator ($554) or someone may choose the most expensive I have seen for over $10,000. As you can guess by price alone, the least expensive refrigerator is not going to give you the same amenities as the most expensive. When choosing a home comfort system, you also have MANY choices and is sometimes overwhelming, but you have to ask yourself what you are looking to accomplish. A person’s home is there biggest investment, but most of us just deal with being uncomfortable in our own home because we don’t know what is available. For instance, if someone was moving and needed to replace their system, you would most likely go with the least expensive system. All you need it to do is heat and cool the home. The flipside is if someone was going to stay in the home for many years, then you need to ask yourself a few questions: Would you like your 2nd floor to be the same temperature as the 1st floor? – Are you looking to lower your utility bills? – No repair bills for the next 10 years? – Are you looking to keep your home and system cleaner? – Would you like to control your system by thermostat or use your phone? –etc.. etc.. etc… The system Greg shared with you was the BEST, and MOST efficient system today that would have given you the ultimate in home comfort. Added to the package was also an electronic air cleaner, humidifier, UV system, and a programmable thermostat. The system also carries a LIFETIME unit replacement, which means it is the last time you buy a furnace for your home. I can almost guarantee with 99% accuracy that there are major differences in what was installed and what we had offered. In the end, what it always comes down to is the choices you were given to make a decision. From the looks of the paperwork, there was only one option he shared with you and it was not what you were ultimately looking for.

Services were never rendered. I cancelled because I had to purchase new furnaces & air conditioners. Any maintenance that needs to be done has to be done by the company that I purchased the units from or their warranty is voided.
Description of Work: Nothing,services were never rendered.At the time that this review was originally left, I was unable to leave an "A' for the review. I'm no longer able to use this company to have my units serviced but I HAVE used them in the past & I never had any issues with them. They always showed up on time & did the necessary work. If I were still able to use them for my needs, I would.

Everyone was very nice and professional. The fact that they call me when it is time for maintenance so I don't have to remember is huge. I don't really know anything about the heat and air but they seem to do a good job and showed me some stuff that the previous company was not doing correctly. They also gave me a good deal for an annual contract.

The technician was wonderful. He explained what needed to done and was extremely diligent in carrying out his duties. Each and every time he entered the house he put on booties.
Description of Work: Installed new air filter and new humidifier pad. Also cleaned and serviced the furnace.
