They have been professional and timely. They've done work at 2 different locations. I liked them so well I even bought an extended service plan with them.

We received the service to our A/C unit purchased on Angies List in March 2012. The tech noted problems with the unit that were beyond repair and said we would be needing a new unit soon. In June/July our unit completely failed. We received (3) separate estimates, including one from American Star. Theirs was the most competitive bid. They did the work very professionally and efficiently. We did have issues with the unit not cooling properly at first and it took three service calls, under warranty, to get things up to speed. This was frustrating, but we understood that this sometimes happens and they did come at a moments notice when contacted. A call to the Bryan factory finally resulted in the right fix. We will use these folks again as they are honest and straight-forward and their pricing is competitive in the market.

We have been a customer since 2007 and the previous owners since 2003. We joined their furnace and air conditioner maintenance program and was very happy with the service. When we were considering the purchase of a new air conditioner, the owner Al was very prompt to contact us and make the sale. In June of 2009 we purchased a new one for $4,345. It took a couple of appointments to get it installed. They sent out a different team the second time. Summer came and gone and then spring 2010 came. They came out to do the maintanence and found that the freon had leaked out. They were out a total of 6 times during that time to fix the leak. It appeared that they had fixed it. That July we contacted them because there were little black spots that appeared to be spewing from the fan and it was on our siding and windows. The technician said it wasn't the air conditioner and needed to contact Al if we did not agree with his assessment. We did not agree because it was just too coincidental that it only happens during air conditioning season. We sent a letter to Al on September 8, 2010 asking him to contact us so we can discuss our concerns and because he did not return our calls. We never heard from him. Summer 2011..same issue. When the technician came to do the maintenance on May 14, 2012, I told him we still had the same problem. We used the air conditioner a couple of times during those warm April days and showed him the spots again. He again said it wasn't the air conditioner and to contact Al. We called Al a few times right after that visit to speak with him. He never returned our calls.

Appointment was made and confirmed. The day of service I was called with exact arrival time-serviceman arrived on time. Service was performed to my satisfaction. SThe service man also asked if I had carbon monoxide detectors, which i do have.

I got them from Angie's List and the experience was positive. I will use them again in the future.

The service technician arrived on time and got right to work on the unit which is located outside the house. My wife said he was done within 20 minutes, having found nothing wrong with the unit. He did clean it out from the winter and give it a charge. We had no issues with the AC all summer.

I was called the day of the appointment with a confirmation. Marty arrived within the specified window and worked quickly and efficiently. I related that there was a recent vibration that occurred when the furnace first ignited in the morning. After checking it, he explained that motors tended to need replacement after 10 years. He replaced the blower wheel and the motor for $345, but discounted the price 15% when I signed up for maintenance for next year A/C and furnace. The only thing that may have been a disappontment in the visit was that I had no idea what a blower wheel and motor cost. After checking online for a general idea, it looked like the cost would be in the $175 - $250 for the parts. The labor took about 20 minutes, so the labor cost seemed to be reasonable.

Jim came out for the furnace tune up and did a great job. It took him about an hour, and everything checked out. We determined the humidifier was on it's last legs, so he quoted me for a new one and told me someone would call on Monday. Carol called Monday morning and scheduled a time to have someone come out. I had a tricky schedule for the week and she was able to get it scheduled and installed working around my schedule which was super helpful. The humidifier got installed and they showed me how to service it and use it since it was slightly different than the old one. They also sent Evan out 2 times to help determine why the house wasn't heating. Al the owner came out too and took a look. We determined it was just a bad design of the ductwork, and are looking for a few options to fix this. They've done an excellent job, I highly recommend them and will be using them in the future.

Overall, the experience has gone very well. I bought an a/c unit from them 10 years ago, and they’ve serviced it since then every year. They also clean my furnace. They’ve been very good with the service. The technicians take their time, bring the right equipment, and they’re competent, which is what I’m pleased about.

Purchased Angie's Big Deal for Air Conditioner maintenance for my daughter's high-rise condo. I was a bit concerned about the system since she has owned the condo for four years and had not had the system checked. Also her condenser is on her balcony with no water source other than kitchen or bathroom. Scheduling lady was most helpful and told me that they have special foam for installations where no water is available. She scheduled the appointment for one week later. Technician arrived on time and conducted himself in a very professional manner. He inspected the furnace, changed the filter (previously purchased), and used the foam to clean the condenser. He told me her system is not as old as I thought it was and is in good working condition. I'm very happy with this company and their service. We will use them again. I also highly recommend "Angie's Big Deal" as a GREAT resource for anything you need done.

We originally purchased an air conditioner tuneup, but by the time we made the appointment, fall was approaching. When the technician, Evan, arrived promptly at the scheduled time, he asked if we would rather tune-up the furnace, which made a lot more sense. He also offered to do both furnaces at the same low price as the Big Deal offer. Evan was very professional, courteous and informative, asking questions to clarify and providing information to inform us. Based on this experience, I would not hesitate to call them again and definitely recommend this company.

Serviceman was brusque and rude from his arrival. Complained about having too much work and not enough guys working. Apparently, owner has laid off all the support personal and now has the technicians doing all the support work as well. Although I had given them the make and model of my furnace and blower, technician brought the wrong mounting or motor. He tried for a couple of hours to rig the installed bracked by drilling new holes for the motor he had. After two hours he gave up and said he needed a different motor. I said fine, well, if that's what it needs. He says, "I found one down in Lombard, but I have to go get it myself and I don't know if they will still be open". I was surprised that they didn't have guys to pick up parts and deliver them to the techs. He then said that he would have to charge me his hourly labor rate for the drive down and back (2 hours). It was January, my furnace was now in parts. Never again. Avoid this business owner at all costs. I could have done this myself in no more than two hours, the motor is available for $285. It cost me $790.

I was very excited to purchase the $59.99 Big Deal A/C tune-up and foam cleaning through Angie's List. I have been looking for a good company to regularly service my HVAC system. The person who answered my call to set up an appointment was very courteous, and I was able to get an appointment within one week. I must say I am a bit disappointed by the service I received. When the service person showed up at my door, he greeted me with "I'm here for the air conditioning." When I let him in the house, he asked me where my furnace was. It wasn't until I introduced myself that he even told me his name is Jim. He immediately went to work on the furnace. Then he left the house to look at my A/C unit outside. I saw him do some diagnostic testing and clean the unit. He never communicated to me what he was doing. When he was finished, he just handed me some paperwork, asked me for my Angie's List Big Deal code, and asked me to sign the invoice. I had to specifically ask him how my HVAC system looked, if there were any problems, and whether or not I had enough freon. The work Jim performed was pretty good, although the A/C unit didn't look like it was thoroughly cleaned. And bless his heart, he was attacked by mosquitos when he first started working on the A/C unit outside. I just didn't think he was very professional in his face-to-face communication, and therefore I didn't get the impression that he was very knowledgeable about HVAC systems. $59.99 was a pretty good deal, but I would have paid more for better service. All told, I would say that I got my money's worth. I wouldn't hire them again though.

Great. Called on the afternoon of the hottest day of the year and they were able to schedule the next morning.

Poorly. They did not service my air conditioner.

When I called, I got right through (no message machine) and was able to make an appointment fairly soon at a convenient time with a 2 hour window in which they would arrive. The office called on the day of the appointment about a half an hour before the time window we had set to let me know that the tech was on his way so that I was not wondering or waiting. I truly appreciated that! It's difficult to determine the quality of the work since I'm not an HVAC person, but the tech worked steadily and gave me a record of maintenance for us to keep for the future. He had to navigate around several other workmen in the home and he was pleasant and cooperative about it.

Everything went very well and it was a very smooth process.

American Star is the best! Our house has hot water heat (no vents or ducts) so we have been living with window ac units for as long as we've lived here. We heard about an ac system designed for houses like ours, called Spacepak (sp?), which uses small hoses routed through the walls and ceilings. We got several estimates, but they were out of our price range ($15K or higher) and we heard some rather lackluster reviews of Spacepak. On the advice of a friend, we called Al, the owner of American Star. He came out and looked around, and told us he could simply install ducting and put in a conventional central air unit. I was really opposed at first--I had visions of our house being trashed with ugly ducts and vents everywhere--and I just didn't see how it would all work. Al first met with my husband, but insisted on coming back when I was at home so that he could answer my questions and calm my fears. Long story short, Al was incredibly patient, honest, and knowledgeable. We ended up signing a contract with him, and he scheduled the work to begin a few weeks later, when my husband could take some vacation time to be home. In the meantime, Al found out that our village had changed its codes, and we would have to place the outside unit in a different spot on our property, a change that greatly increased the "run" of copper piping. He told us he believes in "no surprises" pricing, so he did not charge us extra for the change. When his crew arrived (led by Al's son) they were polite, super hard-working, and amazingly neat. When they installed the vents, they actually used some sort of vacuum drill that stopped plaster and crud from falling around. The job took about a week, but they were really unobtrusive and considerate. We had some very minor issues later with the whole house humidifier they installed, and they came back promptly to fix the problem and explain what had happened. Also, because the weather was so cold, they couldn't add the final charge to the ac unit--temp had to be over 55 degrees to charge accurately. When we had the sudden temperature surge to 80 degrees a few weeks back, they came out that same day to charge the unit. Now that's service! Bottom line, we now have central air, whole house air purifier and humidifier, and it cost us several thousand dollars less than the less-efficient systems we were first considering. Al also put in multiple zone controls, so that we can direct the cooling to rooms we frequent, and not spend a fortune colling rarely used rooms. I cannot say enough how happy I am with the system, and how pleased I was with the quality and integrity of American Star.

I would recommend this company. This was my first experience with them, and I think they did an excellent job. They were prompt, neat, and explained what they did.
