In 1986 John Gallagher had one goal – to provide top quality exterior remodeling products and workmanship at a reasonable price along with incredible service before and after the job. Exterior Designers Inc started with and maintains that philosophy and mission.
They were fabulous. The company and owner were great. They were professional, on time, and things were taken care of the way it should be. Even though this was a small job the owner came, gave us a quote, had his guys fix it, and everything was clean.

Very very good. John is quite personable and willing to work against his competition on pricing. We struck a deal and had the windows measured. Last summer, Marvin was quite a bit behind on deliveries and so were not installed until September. His crew was thoughtful and neat insuring no damage to the home or rugs. Only issue was that two windows were ordered with incorrect openings direction [which were later rectified without de-installing the windows and the bathroom window was the incorrect size. John readily admitted the mistake and reordered. We got the replacement this spring [no one wants a window open during the dead of winter] and we love the windows. Wood staining matches the existing woodwork very well. And these are simply the best windows. Immediately could lower our thermostat 2 degrees and the house is noticably quieter, a nice side benefit. You can trust John as I believe his business ethics to be second to none and I believe that is a rare commodity in home improvement companies. He may not be the lowest [mostly because he only sells top drawer products] but he is one of the finest.

The job was very professinal, the workers took two days to complete the roof and when they left the job site was cleaned with only a minimal amount of materials (some clear plastic from the shingle tabs) visible. Those were carried away from the job site by the wind during installation. I was very impressed by the work and very satisfied.

They were good. They did a nice job. It was extremely hot, and we gave them water, and they were polite and did a nice job. It's gone to winter, and I noticed one of my gutters was leaking. They had installed a leak-guard system on my gutters. I'm going to call the owner in the springtime to come and fix my gutter, so I'm hoping that will be fine. Other than that, I have no complaints.

After talking to 4-5 contractors I selected EDI as I liked John Galagher's approach to business and his price was right in the middle. I talked to him in July and had to wait until September for him to get started. Only one man worked on my siding but Vitek was awesome. He put in 12 hour days and is such a perfectionist that he did the work of a whole crew. There was a lot of rotten wood under the wrap that had been done on my windows a few years previously by another company and that all had to be replaced, which was an extra expense. When he got to my sun porch the wood was so rotten that the windows needed to be removed so the wood could be replaced. The cost for that by a window company was very high and I decided to have new energy efficient windows installed by EDI instead. That caused a 6 week delay while the windows were custom made. The windows were finally installed on a Saturday by a 2 man crew in about 4 hours and Vitek came the following week to finish the siding. The house looks amazing. I have already recommended EDI to a neighbor.
Description of Work: Old siding and window wrap were removed and new Alside middle grade siding was installed. New gutters and downspouts were installed. Wood on the porch windows was replaced and new energy efficient windows were installed.

Would definitely use EDI again. Our great impression of this company started from the very first when John promptly returned our call, all the way to the finish of the job. Everyone was very friendly, courteous, and professional. They were very knowledgeable and took the time to explain all our material and product options and what was going to be done to our home and when. When issues came up, they took the time to explain and walk us through ways to correct the problems. For instance, we previously had new windows installed (by a different contractor). As the siding came down, Vitek (the siding installer) showed us the rotting wood that the window installer had just covered up with tape rather than repaired. The window installer had also left all kinds of holes and gaps around our windows so Vitek walked us through what needed to be done to make it right and made sure we were okay with it before he continued. We highly recommend EDI! We are very happy with the way everything turned out. Our home is beautiful and just like new and we are very proud of it again. Thank you John and all!

They did everything to in one day. They did this on the hottest day of the year. They took the old windows out and put the new windows in. This also included a 12 foot sliding glass door. I did have a problem with the patio door but they came and fix it right away. It wasn't because it was not installed incorrectly it was because there was a spring lock needed to be replaced nothing on there end. They were great. They have a great product and excellent follow up service.
Description of Work: They put in a whole new set of windows. My windows were being held by old calk. My old windows were the old aluminum single pain windows. They were in bad shape. The new ones are polarized and look great.

That’s the one that I would use. They were very prompt. My husband actually built the house down the street and that’s the one that he redid. When I saw their house I thought that it was real nice and I asked who they used so that's who they used; they go by EDII, I think. My husband was assisting me with cedar siding and he wanted specific cedar which was horizontal and not the sheets but individual planks and stain it. When I was online and researching about painters online, I just searched and they were on that too but I did not get them through Angie’s List. He came out and spent quite a bit of time, looked around and measured and under a week we had a bid. They were very professional and I had seen their job so. My neighbors had used them for all their stuff. I was real happy with them and I know my neighbors were real happy with them.

They had to rip off the roof and replace with some plywood. It was a bigger job than one may have expected. They were exceptionally understanding. We were wanting it to be done before the winter. Thankfully, the weather held off and made sure it was completed. He was very thorough and would let us know what is going on and what needed to be done. The end result was that everything went swimmingly. There was one thing about nails that were showing. He came out and corrected this, while telling my son what he was doing. He was patient and understanding. He didn't talk down to me or my son, which was appreciated.

Siding color was matched by the factory. Perfectly blended into the remaining siding on the home. Quick and responsive communications, extremely competent trade craft, competitive pricing and overall high quality experience with John and EDI have made me a very happy homeowner! Would recommend to friends and neighbors and anyone who needs work on anything "exterior" on their homes.
Description of Work: Have 5 dormers across the top of the 20 year old 2 story colonial home. 3 are on the 2 1/2 story roof with a very steep pitched roof. 2 others are on the steep pitched roof of the garage. The 3 dormers on the main roof face into an unfinished large attic space. The outside aluminum clad wood double hung windows of these 3 dormers had basically rotted along the interior where the lock is located. The cedar siding on the sides and front of the dormers edges that come into contact with the roof had begun to rot as well with all of the dormers. Had John replace the three windows and replace the siding on all 5 the dormers. John was on time for the estimate and followup appointments. His expert installer for the windows and siding was always prompt and efficient and the craftsmanship was outstanding. Vitek, the installation pro, pointed a number of other problems that he took care of while the replacing of the siding. All is good at the home now!!!

Update to the below narrative: 1) I increased the initial rating I had. The original ratings were much too harsh. 2) Yes, the roof was installed in 2005. That is absolutely correct. 2007 was incorrect. 3) Price: No complaints on price. Just saying that it was middle of the road based on the estimates we had at the time. 4) With regard to the leak, I have no idea how long it has been present. It probably took awhile for the water damage to start to show. It is a fairly slow leak. Additionally, the water had to travel through a layer of attic insulation before it would damage the drywall. My point of all this being that the leak has probably been around for awhile. Maybe since 2005. Maybe sometime later. To be perfectly honest, I don't really know how long it has been there. 5) Mr. Gallagher has a point that maybe the flashing problem arose when the siding was done two years later. That is entirely possible. However, I cannot be sure one way or another, and frankly, it doesn't matter now. What mattered now was that I had a leak and just wanted it fixed. 6) I think this story came across more as a witch-hunt than anything else. That was not my intent. Mr. Gallagher made valid points when explaining the problem. Other contractors made similarly valid points that seemed to contradict his. In the end, there was probably always going to be a mix of opinions. In my case, though, everybody I talked to had said the roof installation was the problem and not the siding. So, that's why my personal frustration was directed at the roof installation. With all that being said, again, I have modified my ratings accordingly. Price: The price was reasonable based on our estimates. I feel a 'B' is fair. Quality: For obvious reasons, I hesitate to go above a 'C', but do not feel right going any lower. Responsiveness: Yes, Mr. Gallagher has come out to our house whenever needed. It can at times be difficult to reach him, but in the end, he is fairly responsive. I believe a 'B' is fair in this respect. Punctuality: This is based on a very small sample size. The last time we met, Mr. Gallagher was very prompt and this was greatly appreciated. The time prior, I was under the impression he was to come out to our house in the morning yet didn't show up until 5pm. This might have been a simple mis-understanding. I do not know. However, I do not recall any issues with punctuality when we had our roof done. Professionalism: I don't feel comfortable rating higher / lower than a 'C'. I have to believe that our overall experience is not typical. Additionally, there seems to have been miscommunication along the way that perhaps made this seem worse than it was. In the end, I had wanted somebody to come out and say that yes, this roof / house was messed up and here was what it was going to take to fix it. I would have loved to have known when the issue arose, but that does not appear possible at this point. I never expected anybody to repair anything without some cost to me. I just wanted somebody to fix my leak and fix it correctly. From what I had been told, that person should have been a roofing contractor. I understand Mr. Gallagher disagrees and that is perfectly reasonable. It seems simpler in this case to agree to disagree and move on. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original narrative: We used Exterior Design to get a roof replaced in 2007. Price: Middle of the road based on 5 estimates. Quality: The roof looks nice. Other: The roof started leaking in 2011. We called John Gallagher out to look at the leak. After playing phone tag, he came out to the house within a week. Once at the house, I don't think he could have been any quicker to point out that he thought the problem was a result of the siding we had redone a year after the roof. In his estimation, the problem was not the roof as we had suspected. Ok. While I was not entirely pleased with how quickly my concerns were dismissed, his explanation did seem reasonable. As a result, we had two other independent contractors come out to the house to look at the leak. Both were experienced and qualified to make an independent assessment. Both, independently, pointed out that the area of the roof that was leaking was near the siding and did not have any flashing / counter-flashing. Therefore, there was simply a gap where water could leak between the siding and the roof. Both of them also pointed out that this is something the roofer and not the siding folks should have addressed at the time the roof was replaced. Although there was already siding on the house when the roof was replaced, John's crew should have simply pulled off a small section of siding and put the flashing / counter-flashing in. In their judgement, this is where our problem was and we should again contact Exterior Designs. So, that's what we did. We asked John to come back out. This time, we intended to have a siding person here at the same time. Unfortunately, that isn't the way it worked out. John showed up on time (was very prompt) while the siding guy didn't show up until a few hours later. John spent roughly a half hour up on the roof with a hose trying to reproduce the leak. We were able to reproduce the leak when water was sprayed right at the joint between the siding and the roof (the spot without the flashing / counterflashing). Without a doubt, that is where the leak was. This is where I had a problem. He explained that there was nothing he would have done differently when he had done the roof. He claimed that since there was already siding on the house when he did the roof, there was no way for him to put flashing / counter-flashing in when doing the roof. He would have had to remove siding to do this correctly. In his estimation, he didn't do anything incorrectly and in fact would do the very same today. There are two follow-ups to this story. First, the siding guy showed up 2 hours after John left. He could not have been more reasonable. He pointed to the same basic flaws and said that while the flashing issue really belonged to whomever did the roof, he would do what he could to resolve it for us. I will be writing another review for that company since I was so pleased with their service. Secondly, while I was outside finishing up with the siding guy, my wife talked to John on the phone. She attempted to explain what the contractors had told us. John effectively said that his workmanship was not at fault, our independent contractors were unqualified to make any assessment on our situation, and that at worst case, this was a case of human error. Furthermore, he would not be fixing anything and we should have somebody else look into resolving this. Now, to be fair, my wife was getting very agitated while talking to John. So, anything said during that conversation should be viewed through that lens. I will offer this up as my opinion on this saga. First, I think we were fair with John and the other contractors that came out to the house to take a look. I was never looking to get this leak fixed without paying at least something out of pocket. In my opinion, both the siding and the roofing people had a chance to resolve this independently. They both failed by not pointing out the deficiency to us, the homeowners, in the first place. Both of them could have resolved this separately with very little pain (and little money out of pocket for me). So, there is blame to go around. However, the reason I will rate Exterior Designs so low is that the impression I have gotten from John on every occasion is Exterior Designs was unwilling to take any responsibility for this leak. Accidents happen. Mistakes happen. Humans are error-prone. I am ok with all of that. However, I feel Exterior Designs did not stand behind their workmanship and own up when a mistake was made. I hope others have had better overall experiences. However, I will not recommend Exterior Designs nor do any business with them in the future.

First of all the roof was installed in 2005 not 2007. The roof is not leaking, roof to wall flashing under the siding is missing causing the leak. Since doing the roof in 2005, until this fall we have had no contact with the homeowner regarding any problems whatsoever. I was called a few months ago and was asked to come and check the leak. I was sure it was roof to wall flashing however I noticed some nail popps and told the homowner that I would seal them. Roof to wall flashing goes up behind the siding and is not removed or changed unless the homeowner states that they have a problem with it. I have no reason to believe that there was not flashing there six years ago as the homeowner would have had a leak right after we installed the roof. Had we noticed it missing, the roofers are not siders and we would have needed to have the siding installer remove the siding. The roofers would fix the flashing and the siding insatller re-install the siding at an expense of a few hundred dolloars. I have done this on several homes over the years. Again, if there was no flashing there why did it take six years to leak? I merely pointed out to the Tennyson's that it could very well be that when the siding was done the siding installer could have removed the flashing intending to replace it for whatever reason, as it is very easy once the siding is removed and forgot to put it back on. This makes the most logical explaination to me. It would have cost the homeowner nothing to do this when the siding was installed. Again, why did it take six years to leak if we failed to install flashing when it leaked immediately after putting the hose on the area in question. We haave had worse storms in the past six years that I am sure it would have leaked prior to this fall. The rating is skewed as the price was never a question six years ago, the homeowner has agreed that I was punctual but I got rated an F. Unfortunately, the homeowner is unhappy and I understand that. We have a five year warranty and I still came out and attemped to resolve the problem. I suppose if I would have just agreed that it was my problem after six years and fixed it I would have a better rating. Just this week, I made a mistake on a job that will cost me several thousands of dollars to make right and it will be done because that is the right thing to do. I am disappointed that my logic meant nothing to the homeowner, however when I spent 45 minutes with the member he was in total agreement with me when I left the home and he agreed that what I had to say made good logical sense. I find it dificult to believe that an independent contractor would not see this, and for everyone that they can get that agree with them, I can get ten more that agree with me. I am happy to go into arbitration with the homeowner at any time. Respectfully, John Gallagher

They were a good company. We had no problems with the work they did. However on the window side of it, we were kind of disappointed. The windows performed fine. They opened and shut and everything was easy but the noise wasn’t dampened like we thought it would be with the windows we had. Other than that the crew performed well and everything went well. We had no problem with the workmanship or the work. The roof was good. We weren't satisfied in total with the windows. It was not their fault; it was just a manufacturing defect. I thought it was a decent price for the amount of work we had. There were a couple of times when I had a slow response but nothing terrible. Everything was done according to the schedule they laid out for us. Because of the sound dampening on the windows, we searched out another company but it had nothing to do with personality and I would still consider them again.

I consulted Angies List to find contractors who had multiple reports with excellent ratings and a high quality of work. I called the top three in my area. EDI returned my call and scheduled a meeting for a estimate. They arrived as promised and I gave them a overview of what we were looking for. They explained all the options and provided feedback on the various options. Once we the estimate I took few days to do some additional homework on the materials and the company before calling them and hiring them for the job. They gave a estimated date for the start and estimated length of the job. They started and finished the job as promised. The crew performing the work was professional, punctual, and enjoyed their work. The job was completed including a good cleanup job. We wanted a high quality job without the seams you see in a lot of siding jobs and we got what we asked for.
Description of Work: The job consisted of new siding for the entire upper 3/4 of the house including all the facia, soffits, and capping the windows in order to make the house as maintenance free as possible and improve the overall curb appeal.

They did the work in about a day which means they probably put in more than an 8 hours day which is good. I think they did a pretty thorough job.We had to wait a little bit for them to get back to us after the estimate. They came early on the day they were scheduled. It was paid for by insurance.
Description of Work: EDI Exterior Design did siding work for me.
