I called to see if I could get our home air conditioner fixed. The fan was running but the compressor wouldn't work. Shawn Keller said he'd come by somewhere around 2pm. My wife was going to be home and I was busy. I had an idea of what was wrong and expected him to find the problem and replace the standard capacitor that runs the compressor. When I got home, my wife said he installed a "cold start kit" and he said he was surprised it didn't have one on from the manufacturer. The minute I heard it kick on I knew something was not right. The kit he installed by-passed the normal capacitor and made a large "Whump" sound when turning on. This I knew was a High Discharge capacitor and was unnecessary and might end up damaging the compressor. I know how to repair almost anything I have tools or parts for and after examining the unit, I knew he didn't solve the problem, just sold us a kit, bypassing the repair and made some money. I called a trusted company which I should have called in the first place and described the repair and they agreed that something was not right. They came out and examined the repair agreeing with my conclusion, that he avoided the repair. They took off the "kit",replaced the normal capacitor, $40 and even said that they were surprised that the compressor was even running after the High Discharge capacitor drops out. The normal capacitor has a start and "run" for the compressor and keeps the compressor running. They showed me everything that needs to be checked out to find the problem, amps, load on compressor, pressure in and out. The High Discharge capacitor did cost a lot according to the other repairman, and I had to pay for that service call adding to the bill. Keller didn't even Itemize the bill! This other repairman was the nicest repairman that I've met, and very knowledgeable. All I can say is I know when someone else knows what their talking about. I lost a hunk of money but I hope someone else reads this and avoids Keller Heating and Cooling.
Description of Work: My Home Air conditioner compressor wouldn't run. I called several repair businesses and all were busy till 4:30, a lot of people had units going out in 95+ heat. Keller Heating and Cooling could come and check it out. I probably should have been here when the repair was being done but was busy at work. Keller avoided even repairing the air conditioner and just sold us a "Cold start Kit". (Do) have someone that knows something about what needs to be done present when they repair it. Watch them closely, ask lots of questions about what went wrong and how to fix it. Reputable repairman are more than willing to let you know what their doing! Stick around and watch the repairs, you'll learn something!
