Green Attic Insulation

Green Attic scheduled the appointment, confirmed the time before arrival, arrived on time. They set up the equipment and identified those areas in which air flow was lowering ambient temperature. They confirmed some areas of air leakage I knew of, but identified areas around window and door frames, around the furnace exhaust to the roof, and in window frames that are making heating and air conditioning less efficient. They also identified that our building's roof insulation needs to be replaced, which could be confirmed via the looking at the furnace exhaust area, and that some sections of air duct and areas around exhaust fans need to be properly sealed and insulated. The had recommendations for how best to insulate front and back doors. All of this information is very helpful and explains some of the temperature fluctuations I had experienced in my apartment over the very cold winter this year. They did describe the solutions their firm offers, but did not apply pressure, just explained what they could do and provided estimates for doing that. They also explained those actions I could take myself and the appropriate materials to use (caulk, weatherstrip, etc.). I was very pleased with their service!

The project started with just attic insulation. However, after several contractors noticed mold in the attic, I had to budget for that as well. Green Attic's inclusive price for both mold treatment and attic insulation came out to be the best. Andrei was very helpful in walking me through rebate and loan process. Once approved, he was patient as I had other work done in the attic/roof before scheduling time with him. His team completed the work in 4 days spread across 2 weeks. 2 days for mold, 1 day for insulation, then 1 day for blower-door testing at the end. I wish we had done the blower-door testing in the beginning so I could see the before and after effects as well as identify other areas that needed air sealing. Had this been done, I would have added the crawlspace and other areas to be insulated/sealed at the same time. The only negative thing that came out of my experience with Green Attic were two mis-haps. One of our canned lights was hanging down after they did the insulation work. Also, their van backed-up into our gutter and damaged a portion of it. Both issues were fixed however.

We were VERY happy with the end result, but this project was not without its detours. It started out as a request to 1) insulate the floor under our kitchen to keep the cold crawl space air from making the kitchen floor and kitchen cabinets really cold, and 2) prevent the ice dams from forming on the roof above our kitchen (partial attic). Andrei was very helpful when he came to assess the situation, and recommended we replace the 9 kitchen bulbs (mostly halogen floodlamps) with cooler LEDs to stop warming the attic so much as to cause snow on the roof to melt and then freeze near the gutters. We really appreciated his honesty in helping us to save our money, since insulating the attic would have cost an extra $1300 by itself. We also had cold water pipes going under our kitchen, which presented a problem since Andrei missed one important detail that these pipes were actually at the bottom edge of the floor joists under the kitchen (not enough room for the cellulose to insulate them if we sprayed it between the joists with a "radiant barrier" (the original plan). Andrei quoted insulating our entire ceiling (attic and space between the LR cathedral ceiling roof joists), insulating the attic above our kitchen, and insulating under our kitchen floor. However, the quote was much more than we were willing to pay (about $5k for all 3 projects including drywall replacement). So far, our heating bills have not been that bad, so we decided to just insulate under the kitchen floor and give Andrei's LED bulb suggestion a chance. We replaced all the kitchen bulbs with cooler LEDs (and did the same for the cathedral ceiling track lights in our LR, even though we didn't have a problem there). We had 6 more very hot incandescent bulbs in our rear entrance hallway also were below the same attic (6 more bulbs which we also replaced with LEDs). When Dimitri came to do the work, he realized that putting a radiant barrier under the kitchen would not help the cold kitchen water problem (hot water taking so long to warm one's hands or warm the screaming baby's milk) and would likely make it difficult to access the water pipe valves under our kitchen sink, or for me to insulate the water pipes myself with polyethylene/PE foam pieces. So, he suggested the rim joist insulation (previously had cold crawl space air from outdoors going up between the walls and into our kitchen cupboards through the space between our subfloor and the crawl space foundation (and also up to other interior walls within the house). I didn't like having the surprise of having to reassess the entire situation on the spot, postponing the work for a week, and paying another $500. However, these guys are honest businessmen and they offered to execute the new plan (more work) for the same price of $950. He also gave me a new insight that we could extend our ductwork under our kitchen if the floor was still cold after plugging the exterior crawl space vent in the winter and insulating the "rim joists". The following Saturday, there were more surprises, but the quality of their work was FANTASTIC. They plugged all the holes in the subfloor and the blocks of 3 inch thick foam board all fit perfectly between the floor joists and between the top of the foundation wall and the wooden subfloor. They even helped me remove an old 1950's oil pipe that was going through our outside wall and bringing cold air into the crawl space. I provided the steel plate to cover the hole and Dimitri and his assistant did EXCELLENT work. I couldn't believe how good their work looked (much better than just spraying closed cell foam up there). The first surprise was them asking to borrow my hammer to break up the extra foundation cement "spillage" so they would have a flat surface against which to put the foam insulation board directly against the cement foundation wall. I got it back later (all scratched up, but I can buy another one for only $10). The only thing that disappointed me about their work was the fact I found a few of those cement pieces (1/2 to 1 inch diameter) in our bathroom toilet after they left. A month later, we have not had any plumbing problems, but they really should have asked permission before flushing cement down our toilet. The 2nd surprise was that dust came flying out tiny cracks above our floorboards upstairs in the hallway and master bedroom and made a pile on top of my tools and our shoe rack in the laundry room. This scared me at first, since we have a newborn and I have dust mite allergies, but I vacuumed it up very easily with a little portable vacuum and never had a problem at all afterward (Much ado about nothing). This is natural material, and that's one of the reasons we chose to go with them. At the end of the day, we had one final surprise. I guess we can't complain much since they did extra work for the same price, but they said they were done and had to go, and upon inspection I discovered they had left little cement pieces all over the crawl space floor (where we normally store stuff) and had spilled the rat poison pellets removed from the oil pipe area all over the crawl space floor. After I insisted, Dimitri finally cleaned up most of it. I offered to pay him $50 extra for that, but he wouldn't take the extra money. I ended up on my hands and knees picking up more rat poison after they left, since I "walk" down there and I didn't want to accidentally track it on the floor upstairs where our baby crawls. Hopefully next time they will take more care when handling rat poison and put cement pieces in garbage bags instead of flushing it down customers' toilets. The Green Attic guys were very professional in every other way, but I had to give them a B for professionalism just because of the way they handled the final cleanup, the cement pieces and the spilled rat poison (probably an unusual situation for them). Despite a few unpleasant surprises, we were VERY pleased with the quality of their work, and we would definitely hire them again if we ever need more insulation work.

They came out and did the assessment as a second opinion about some work that was previously done. I liked everything they told me and how professional they were. They were very knowledgeable and helpful in answering my questions. He actually showed me the thermal hardware they were using, too. They followed up with an email summary of what they found, which was helpful.

We were very pleased with the work performed. We had a few problems getting our initial appointment scheduled, so they provided us with a free infrared screening of the house to see where our house was leaking air. I had a ton of questions about the procedure before we scheduled the work, and Andrei was very nice in answering all of my questions. They were able to schedule our work day around my schedule and gave us our first choice of days. They worked hard all day, cleaned up after themselves, and our house has been much warmer! We qualified for a $1200 rebate from Nicor, which they took off of our bill before we paid them, so we didn't have to wait around for the rebate to be sent to us. We would highly recommend them.

I purchased a big deal for a home energy audit. It was simple to set up the home energy audit and the individual who performed the audit arrived on time. The audit was comprehensive and I was encouraged to participate the entire time and ask questions. Several days after the audit was performed, I received a complete package, with pictures, identifying problem areas and solutions for reducing energy loss.

It was fine. It was one of those things that you don't really notice, so I guess it is great, no problems. They were really nice people, so that was good. They were nice and it seems to be working. The came out, they were on time and they did what they said they were going to do. They did a great job.

Some caulking done at Green Attic's direction had turned yellow over the last year so we contacted Green Attic about the issue. They were very responsive, came and viewed the issue, agreed that it needed to be corrected, and when we offered to get our painter to come and paint over the yellow caulk, they authorized us to get a quote and agreed to pay the full price of the service. They sent the check promptly and everything went smoothly. Was very pleased with their professionalism and responsiveness.

I had no problems and they did a great job. Did everything they said they were going to do.

They are good and thorough. They did a good job. They cleaned up after themselves. They explained everything really well. One thing they didn't do is they never gave the end report. They were supposed to show me the before and after pictures and I think he lost the before pictures or something. That was one thing but I thought the work they did was good so I didn't say much about it.

They didn't give me a quote because they were not able to do the work. They took pictures and then emailed me telling me that they couldn't do the work. They were very professional.

Easy. Useful information that helped us know where we're missing or needing more insulation. And , of course, what corrective action can be taken. The appointment didn't take long at all.

It was fine. It worked well. The staff that came out was fine. In terms of punctuality there was some confusion.

Contact with them was rather slow, and they were difficult to get a hold of at times, but they showed up at all their appointments, did an excellent and thorough job of both the evaluation and the insulation. Although I was hesitant because of the difficulty in contacting them at times, their work was excellent and I would definitely hire them again!

For the cost and scope of the Deal, they did a good job. After the report, looking at the price of the upgrades I chose not to move forward. However, they were nice and professional enough and the report was detailed.

The analysis is a bargain with Angie's deal. But watch out for their bid to do the insulating. They were much more expensive than the insulating contractor I eventually selected.

He also performed a test of the whole house using a huge fan and equipment attached to a door frame. In addition he checked for carbon monoxide levels by all the appliances. He went over and beyond the scope of work and recommended various ways to reduce heat loss and also checked the water heater for any potential backdraft into the furnace; he also recommended contacting the furnace company as he noticed that some of the heated air was not flowing through the air filter vents. We received a full report with pictures of the heat loss areas from the company along with a proposal for improving the house's energy efficiency by adding to the level of attic insulation. We are very happy with the services provided and will definitely work with Green attic in the future.

They came here and did it. It turns out there are 2 levels of energy evaluation. This one wasn’t a complete energy audit. It was like we just paid him to try to sell us service. He went along and told us different things we could do. I talked to the insulation that the installer and they said the benefits of what he wanted to do would be minimal. He did determine that the new windows we had installed were leaking so we got the installer to fix that.

They finished fast. (Inaudible). They quality was great. Responsiveness, yes they showed up in a timely manner.

Green Attic Insulation were excellent. I really liked what they were doing so they did a considerable amount more work that what was on the big deal. Insulation gets messy sometimes, they opened up my ceiling and it's a 17 foot ceiling, but when they left you couldn't even tell they were there. They cleaned up so well. The owner and one worker came out, they did more than what they said they would do so you can't beat that. There was nothing they did that would give them less than an A. I would definitely use this company again, I was extremely happy with their work.

I spent $1000 with them and they came out fairly quickly after I purchased the deal. It was more expensive than I expected based on what I read in the coupon.

Andrei and his team were fantastic. Very responsive and professional. They did a 3+ hour evaluation of our home to show where needed to increase out insulation and sealing (which we expected prior to the appointment). After hiring them to do the work, they were extremely professional and hard-working. We're very happy with our choice and hope to see the results in future energy bills.
