I called the company to set up the appt and they told me there would be an additional charge of $89 for a roof-top AC unit. (The owner called me to tell me that if I provided the ladder, there wouldn't be an additional charge. Is he kidding?) I live in the city in a condo. I do not own a ladder. This additional charge was not in the Fine Print of the ad that was emailed to me. I consider this very misleading and a huge waste of my time. Had that been there, I would not have taken the time to purchase it. I am very disappointed that my first purchase of one of your Big Deals turned out so poorly. I would like a refund for this. Disappointed, M. S.
Description of Work: I purchased the $49 tune up.

Response from Freedom Heating & Cooling
We do apologize for any miss-communication on our part. I've looked up the previous deal for the $49 for a Gas-Furnace, Air-Conditioner, or Water-Heater Tune-Up, it is clearly stated on the fine print on the fourth line from the bottom (copied from the deal page) "Additional charge of $89 will be accessed if ladder is required to access unit". The owner did want to try to work with you by waiving the fee if there was a latter you may have had so the tech can access the unit. Again we do apologize for any disappointment but the deal did state it clearly and we really wanted to try to be helpful. We thank you for this review, it does help us learn what we can do better in the future when issue such as this arise. We hope that one day we will be able to help you with whatever you may need.

The technician was polite enough, but seemed focused on "the upsell" when it came to the AC units and the hot water heater. Trying to get me to add cooling agent (though it was almost full) and add a surge protector to both units (it has one built in). I did purchase an upsell on the coupler for the hot water heater because (even though it was only 3 years old) it was not running optimally as it should. I was put off by three things: 1. the technician smelled of smoke (as someone who is allergic to smoke, I had to go around my house afterwards to get the smell out) 2. the technician put 3 LARGE self-promotion stickers for FREEDOM HEATING on the outside of my new AC condensers. Not 1 or 2 - but 3 - all without permission. I peeled them off and the cheap stickers left residue all over that dirt will collect in. Very TACKY move for their own self promotion that defaced my property in my back yard. They'd be better served giving me a magnet. He also put a huge sticker on my hot water heater (at least 8.5 x 5.5 inches) that won't come off. MADE A HUGE MESS that looks awful. 3. the technician seemed keen on having me fill out by hand an Angie's List reference that he would turn in and then FREEDOM would put on the service. That seemed really fishy to me given reviews should (IMO) be added by the customer. He pushed pretty hard and I considered it, but after reading the fine print it seemed odd to me. I'm glad I didn't because I didn't see the stickers he plastered without permission on the outside condenser or hot water heater until after he left. ALWAYS GET PERMISSION before you mark someone else's property, Rick!
Description of Work: Did a seasonal check (cleaning) for 2 zoned AC units and check up for a hot water heater. When I've had my AC units serviced in the past from another provider, the technician would vacuum the unit to get any dust out before turning it on. Not only did this technician NOT vacuum, but he got dust all over my just-cleaned dining room and upstairs bedroom when he blasted the equipment without the covers. And he just left the mess.

The technician was nice enough, not super knowledgeable, but not unskilled or unfriendly by any means. But the management was kind of slimy and we definitely felt like we got the "run around" when it came time to settle up. We ended up spending $650 (in addition to the original $55 pre-purchased package) for a part that cost around $100 (per 3 different furnace part company's websites). When we spoke to a manager about the price of the service and part, he had a long, convoluted explanation about why this was incorrect and he would not budge on the price. Since it was December, extremely cold, and I was and still am pregnant, we ended up agreeing to pay what they asked because otherwise we would have been without heat. If it had been any warmer out we would have sent them packing and gotten a second opinion. Now, I know I'm not a furnace expert and admit that they could have been telling us the complete truth about the price discrepancy, but we just didn't feel like we could trust what they were telling us because of their attitude and demeanor. We were happy to have heat and we haven't had any furnace problems since, but when all was said and done my husband and I just felt swindled. Overall it was a bad experience and I would never hire this company again.
Description of Work: I had purchased a package for a furnace service and check because we were having trouble w/our furnace and it was just time for a tune-up. They ended up having to replace our furnace's "motherboard."

We do apologize for any miss-understanding that may have occurred, it is in these situations we tend to bring up the cost of getting breaks done at an auto mechanics shop. We all can relate to this scenario because we've all been there time and time again to have repairs done. I had just had my breaks done with my local mechanic and the total for the job came to $350.00. Now upon looking up pricing after the work was done I too looked up the parts needed to do the job and it came out to $40.00 for all break pads for my car. Realizing this I did more research and found that there is more to the work than just the part that needed to be replaced, it takes a skilled technician in order to know how to do it and do it right, this person has had not only schooling but experience. It also takes investments in tools as long as an investment of time for the technician to do such a job not to mention the correct platform (shop) to do the actual work, work I could not perform on my own due to lack of knowledge, tools, space, or time. It is then when I was able to realize the value in which it was costly, I also realized that if for any reason my car could not stop I had someone to hold responsible for it. In your case it is just the same, we did look up the part which was replaced for your particular unit and it was considerably more than $100 at our cost due to the age of the unit. Aside from that being the case, the cost does cover the time, diagnostics, and the repair with a 1 year warranty on the part and 30 days warranty on the labor. We do apologize if you did feel we were giving you the "run around", it's most definitely never what we want our customers to feel, our mission is never to over sell because we'd rather have a customer for life then for the quick money and run so it would be against everything we've worked for to do such a thing. That being said, after all repairs were made we were able to do the proper tune-up which is the deal that was bought through the Angie's list website. We do see that you had us back in June to do your A/C tune up as well, even though you hadn't agreed with the previous pricing from us and we really do appreciate your business. We do hope to work with you long term, have a wonderful spring and summer this year.

Service went very well. Was able to quickly schedule an appointment and the person that came was very effecient and thorough. He even took a look at our second furnace even though we hadn't specified we needed a tune-up for two furnaces. He was able to correct things that were incorrectly done by our home warrantly service and gave us thorough information on care and future considerations. We had an issue the next week where one of the furnaces leaked water and they were prompt to come back to our home and fix the issue. We had such good experiences with them that we referred our family members to them.

he guy came & told us we needed a new blower motor. He said parts plus installation was $695.00. Not knowing how much this part would cost & with it being as cold as it's been with a child in the house, we bit the bullet & paid for it. This cost, plus the $89 service fee, brought our total to over $700. That's WITH the "discount". The guy was nice enough, did his work & left. It wasn't until the following day that I looked up the cost of a furnace blower motor on line, just out of curiosity. My stomach sank when I found out they cost around $100. So why did I pay over $700 for a $100 part? Good question. | |I called the company to find out why the charged 7x more than the price of the motor itself. The guy I spoke to said that the price includes a $100 1 year warranty. I told him I was never asked if I wanted to spend an extra $100 on a 1 year warranty on an item that costs $100 anyway. He said, "well, that also includes the labor. We wouldn't charge you labor." I told him, "why should I pay an extra $100 for a $100 item that MIGHT break in 1 years time?" He tried to convince me that having faulty motors straight from the box happens a lot. Well guess what, it's working just fine (surprise!). I suggested that since he gets so many "faulty" motors, he should follow up with his supplier. He said he can't because his supplier goes through a different supplier. Hmmm....sounds fishy, right? | |Then he tried to tell me that the other cost components are insurance, gas, overtime, workman's comp & school for his techs. I told him, "with it being after normal business hours, I expect to pay extra money for an overtime situation. I get that. But why are you charging me an O.T. $89 charge on top of an O.T. rate? I thought the $89 was because it was past normal business hours." He said the $89 charge is the service fee. I asked him why he doesn't waive the fee for people who use their service, like so many other businesses do. He can't apparently. I also asked him, "don't you think charging an extra $500 for a $100 part is insane? That's more than labor charges when you get your car fixed!" I also asked him why I'm being nickel & dimed for all the rest. He asked if I wanted a criminal coming to my house & causing a fire because he didn't know what he was doing. "Of course not," I said, "but now your telling me I'm also paying for his schooling too?" (He didn't say anything to that remark). He then tried to tell me that because our call was in the middle of the night, the guy had to be woken up & drive an hour to come. I said, no, the guy actually called us saying he was running late from another job, so he was going to come after that. I also said that Franklin Park, where they are located, is a 30 min drive (less than 20 miles) from where we live in Brookfield. He basically came up with excuse after excuse of why we were charged so much. I told him that since I didn't know about the warranty, I didn't want it. He finally agreed to reimburse me the $100 warranty. I told him if that's the best he could do, then I have no problem writing a review on Angie's List about how ridiculously overcharged they are & that they nickel and dime you to death. He didn't really say much to that, so that's where we are now. | |All I can say is that I would NEVER go with these guys again! Did they do the work? Yep. But I still get sick to my stomach knowing that I got snowed over & paid over $500 more than what the part costs. Yes, I'd expect to pay extra for an evening "emergency" repair. In my mind, I was expecting maybe around $400 or so. But $700? The HVAC guys get paid $109/ hour for normal business hours. All I can say is I guess I'm in the wrong business!
Description of Work: Freedom HVAC | |In a nutshell, I would NOT recommend these guys. | |We came home in the evening to a burning rubber smell coming from our vents. We had to call for furnace service at night because we have a young child in the house & with the weather being near 0 degrees, we didn't want to wait until the following day. We looked up furnace repair places on Angie's List, and found Freedom with great reviews. Plus they had a 10% off service deal. We decided to go with them. T
