Gray Tree Service

They were very easy to schedule with, clear about the fact that the roots were not part of the removal and the clean-up was, and came out when they said they would to do the work. They left the area very clean. Couldn't be more pleased.

I don't like giving bad reviews. However I did buy services with this company using an "Angies Bucks" special and every-time I log onto Angies I am prompted to give a review so here it is.. It was hard to get an appointment or a response, for which I am willing to cut slack given that they probably were overwhelmed with the offer. But after they did finally come out and trim two trees, my husband was dismayed that the one tree that clearly had dead limbs was not addressed. To their defense, I did not ask about it - I was more concerned with the 2 big trees. However, a professional service should notice and at least say "You may want to think about trimming that one as well for an additional $$". Anyway, the part that truly annoyed me, was the repeat calls for payment when I had indeed, paid up front via the Angies bucks. I will not use any prepaid special again for this reason. I finally convinced the owner that he had previously received payment, but I don't think he was rather gracious about the faux paus. It just reflects general disorganization. In fact, I would characterize my overall impression of this company as a disorganized enterprise. Hopefully they can use it an an opportunity for improvement.

A nice man came at the appointed time and gave me an estimate for the work. The estimate was in the mid-rang of others who provided estimates.I was a little worried because the estimate wasn't written, but I took my notes and reviewed them with him before he left. I then scheduled the work. When the crew came, they honored the estimates. I have additional work that I want to have done, but didn't have the full budget for that in 2012. I hope to call them back in the spring or summer for additional work.

They were professional. They did a good job on the tree. They did a great job cleaning up afterward. I would use them again if they were cheaper.

As I said in the previous paragraph, I didn't use the tree service. But they were very nice in suggesting that I get my money back from Angie's List, which wasn't a problem.

We bought an Angie's List Deal as a gift for our great neighbors. Gray Tree Service were very careful as they cut large branches that overhung neighbors' houses and over cars in the street. It was amazing to watch! They cleaned up the yard and street afterwards.

Good service overall. Only improvement I recommend is to complete the delivery scheduling in a single call. I called and delivery guy called me back to schedule delivery...not a huge deal....but excellent customer service shortens the touches it takes to complete a transaction

The tree trimming job was great -- well done both in design and execution. I've had more well-know tree trimmers do the work for much more money but far less results. I even called one time to say that I couldn't tell that any work had been done, and they came back out and did more. With Gray Tree Service, the job was done quickly and thoroughly. No more branches dipping onto my roof or over the sidewalk, which is exactly what I wanted.

Gray Tree Service is a family-owned and operated business that seems to take pride in the service they offer. The company was prompt in arriving on the date requested. They arrived with a crew of about 6 or 7 workers to do the tree removal that we had arranged. We had six trees removed, and all stumps were ground out. They worked quickly and efficiently, each person seeming to know their role in the process. They had all the needed equipment. The work was finished in two hours, an hour less than what was planned. The yard was cleaned well, and except for some tire tracks from the equipment that had to be used (i.e., the stump grinder), one would not know they had ever been working. I would use Gray Tree service again.

Paid $200 for a Big Deal worth $400. We were given an estimate for one and one half hours of work at $400 per hour. Work was completed in less than an hour, and only equipment used was manually operated trimmers on long poles. Invoice was presented for $600 and when questioned about this in a subsequent phone call we were told that charges are calculated per the estimated time -- not the actual time worked. Work was competently and considerately performed. Communication was confusing because conflicting information was given by the owner and by his son.

We called Gray's Tree Service after purchasing the Angie's LIst Coupon and made an appointment. The tree service performed agreed upon service, did clean up to my satisfaction and we will probably use them again.

Purchased special deal for half day tree trimming. Representative came to house and indicated the work could not be done in time purchased. Used another tree trimmer. Got refund from Angies List.

This was a difficult experience for me because I was a toddler when the tree was planted and I grew up with it. I didn't expect that it would have to be taken down. But the people at Gray were understanding. They arrived at 8 when they said they would and had the massive tree down around noon. They were fairly conscientious about not dropping large limbs on the rest of the garden, and they did a good job of cleaning up considering how much debris there was. They also were very helpful in assisting me in saving several cross sections of the trunk and a number of sections of branches to be made into mementoes of the tree. I did think it was a bit pricey because I read reviews by people who had "large" trees taken down for a lot less by Gray. But there were about eight men who came out, and they all were busy the whole time. I was thankful that Gray made all the arrangements with ComEd to disconnect and reconnect the electrical wires to minimize the amount of time my father, who uses an oxygen machine, and his neighbors were affected by the power outage.

The overall experience was positive. The work was done quickly and in a workmanlike manner.

My only reason for the "C" in responsiveness, is I asked him to look into another issue I was having with the tree while his team was out. I never got a response. I called to ask about it, and my call was not returned. As far as the work they did, it was just what I asked them to do.

I was able to schedule the job within a short time after buying the Angies List coupon. They showed up on time and completed the job within 45 minutes. The crew did an excellent job of cleaning the area around the tree after the trimming. I bought two coupons for a total of $198, which was an excellent value for the job.

We purchased 2 Big Deal Coupons through Angie's List and called them to come out on a Saturday to have them see what we wanted done and what they could do for that amount. They came out on Thursday and trimmed 4 trees, so it was a good deal. They were very prompt on their appt and returned calls the same day. The trees look good.

Bought two big deal certificates. Don't know much about how much these things typically cost, but it seems coincidental (fishy?) that it costs exactly 2 certifcates worht of work. Maybe I did get a bargain, but maybe not. I actually wanted to ask them to perform more work, and get a quote when they arrive to do the work. But they showed up without me knowing it, though on the expected day. They did their work and left. I guess since they are already paid via the big deal certificate. Would have been nice to have a chat, if for nothing else, to tell me exactly what they did, and be able to ask them what else I need done from their point of view.

All the work was done to, or beyond, my expectations. The main job of removing the branches overhangning the roof should be good for at least 5 years. The branches from the neighbor's tree that was hanging over my property were removed in a professional and efficient manner, as were the other services described above. They came with 3 trucks and a crew of approximately 7 workers and did the work quickly, cleaned the area and provided free wood chips for the front. It did take several weeks for Rick to set a date after the initial estimate but this was not an emergency job for me so that was no problem. I'm sure if I needed the work done sooner he would have been responsive. Part of the work was done from a Big Deal I had purchased from Angie's List for $400 of work for $200. The price of $750 takes this deal into account. One more thing, Rick's team is very good. There were a few extra things I needed to have done the day they came and they gave me a fair quote and I had them done.

I'm satisfied with the work done, however I'm not sure that I got the amount of work equal to the full value of the coupons purchased. The Gray representative told me that tree removal and stump grinding for the size of tree we had would normally cost $400. No additional services that I could see, were provided so I think we may have overpaid for the tree removal. I've had trees and stumps removed from previous homes and from that experience I know that the stump grinding for the size of tree we had generally takes as much time as removing the tree. I was not home when the tree was removed so maybe some branches on other trees were removed, but I couldn't really notice a difference. There's a branch in my backyard that's obviously oversized and in the way. It wasn't trimmed at all. We have several trees that will eventually need to be removed. I won't automatically give the business to Gray Tree Service. I will have Gray and other companies come out and give me a bid. Once again, I am very new to Chicagoland and Gray may be the very best out there. But personally I don't have that assurance based on a one time, single tree removal service. The tree removal was done very well. It was definitely worth $198 the amount paid for the coupons. I'm not sure it was worth $400, the value of the coupons.

I made an appointment and Gray tree service came at the correct time. I mentioned that the trees over the house would need trimming and that job was completed to my satisfaction. I would use them again.

Overall the job was very efficient. The person that collected payment wasn't the owner or his son which provided good customer service. He wasn't necessarily mean but was not personable. They don't seem to negotiate price but they do have several guys so I guess they all have to be paid. It took a few weeks to get the service scheduled as this was a busy time for them.

Rick from Gray Tree Service was great. He came out promptly to provide us an estimate, which we felt was very reasonable. We were able to easily schedule a time for the crew to come out and they left very little mess in our yard. Rick was very patient with me, as he and I played a lot of phone tag. The only reason that I am giving them a B rather than an A is because we did have a slight mis communciation regarding the date that the crew was coming to trim the tree. Regardless, we will absolutely use Gray Tree Service in the future and I found this to be a very good value.
