Summertime is almost here and now our A/C was not working. So after talking with my neighbor, I was referred to an A/C guy and after having him come out to repair our system, it still wasn't working. The A/C guy who was referred to us said I needed to replace my capacitor, have my refrigerant refilled because it was reading empty and that I probably had leaks which caused the refrigerant to be low. After I had him do all of what he recommended and $340 later, my A/C still did not work. The guy told me that I must have a bad compressor then and I will need to replace my heat pump condensing unit or my entire system. I decided to call around and get quotes that ranged from $1,500 for a compressor replacement up to $6,000 for a new system. So, after several calls and appts with various A/C companies and still not being confident in any of them, I proceeded to do even more research online and found a referral network of highly rated A/C specialists. I immediately submitted my information and was called by Mr. Tom Abbey of MTN Air of North GA out of Buford within 15-30 minutes. I told him I just wanted to get a quote on a new system. Tom came out that afternoon to look at our system and without asking he did his own diagnosis to make sure I needed a new system before telling me anything. I said I just want a price and don't want to pay any other fees, etc. He said he wasn't charging for the diagnosis and was not confident that I needed another system. He didn't want to just give me a price for a new system based off of someone else's diagnosis. Within minutes he knew exactly what the problem was and then showed me what was wrong, explained why it wasn't working, what it would cost to fix it, and when he could get to it. I approved him to do the repairs and scheduled it according to our schedule. When he promptly came out as scheduled, they immediately started the repair work. He re-installed the original capacitor that the other A/C guy said was bad and it is still running the system over a month later, so wasn't a bad capacitor. They took about two hours for the repair and even threw in a hard start kit to help assist the compressor and topped off the refrigerant which was still low(after the other guy supposedly refilled it). The extras the Tom did was at no extra charge and without me even knowing until i saw the invoice. *No extra charges or add-ons, it was exactly what he quoted the first time he came out. MTN AIr of North GA and Tom Abbey saved the day and THOUSANDS of DOLLARS on a new system, which was never needed to begin with. Lesson here is just because someone is referred to you, doesn't mean they know what they are doing. After all of this, I have learned that there is no standard in the A/C industry and finding a knowledgeable and honest one is near impossible. Have no fear in contacting Tom Abbey of MTN Air of North GA, because he is the best in the industry. You will not be disappointed.
