I have a four year old laptop that the DVD drive seemed to have failed. I had purchased an external dvd drive but wasn't able to install it - my computer couldn't even see it. I normally can eventually figure out how to fix things myself, but after hours of research, I was stumped. After looking at several listings on Angies list, several that required being without my computer for 3 days while they did diagnostics, I saw that Alexander Technical Resources in Atlanta did remote repair. I called the number listed at almost 7:00 pm Atlanta time just to see if they thought they could fix it. Spencer answered the phone, listened to my situation, asked several questions for clarification and said that he would be happy to look at it for me. I expected to schedule an appointment several days out, but he said that he happened to be between some things and could do it right then if I would like - I was stunned! He knew exactly what he was doing, diagnosed it quickly as a registry problem and went quickly to the correct key in the registry. My computer wouldn't let him change the registry key; he suspected that he needed to clean my registry, which he did. After a reboot, my laptop was able to see the external drive. He then discovered that somehow my original drive had been disabled and corrected that. So now I can use both the internal and the external drives when I couldn't use either before. In addition, he gave me some tips on using my registry cleaner. So in about thirty minutes time from my call, my laptop was fixed. I am a really happy camper!! Thank you Spencer!

I was and continue to be very pleased with the 'fixes' for my computer. The problems are corrected. My questions were answered courteously as though the service technician, Spencer, had never heard the question before. Although it was probably the 27th time he'd heard it that day! My initial concerns about working remotely were unfounded. The technology and the skills of the technician provided a level of personalized service that was as reassuring as if we had been in the same room.
Description of Work: My computer (pc) was responding erratically: Icons rearranging themselves, increasingly slow start ups, error messages, etc. After trying the conventional fixes myself, I knew it was time to take it to a professional. However, I had not received the quality of service I expected for the fees I paid the two shops I used previously. I chose Alexander Technical Services based on the reviews on Angie's List. Their website is user friendly and I was able to place my service call and get a timely response.

My first contact was with Spencer Alexander - currently this seems to be a husband and wife team, but they have had other employees and are currently hiring, as I understand. I don't think I adequately described my PC competence. I am quite experienced as a user, but weak on system file operation (files you that are hidden by default). He gave me hints and instructions for free, which I tried and failed to implement. I called again, agreed to pay, and he took over my pc and did a lot. He seemed rushed, apparently busy with other clients. I don't think he understood the extent of the problems. After that call, let's say things were sort of working but not back to normal. I called again and got Donna, who is less knowledgeable but very patient. She agreed to fix everything without additional charge. It took two more sessions, but eventually almost everything was back to normal. I have not followed up on one remaining problem (Windows search does not search in my current document folder, for some reason). Overall, I felt the service was good and worthwhile, considering the extent of the problems. I think most other services would tell you to wipe the operating system and start over, which is not a very palatable option. I would go to them again, rather than banging my head against my keyboard with &% windows problems. Hints: Be ready to completely describe the problems you are having. Tell them you are a novice, even if you are not - that way they won't assume anything.
Description of Work: My Windows 7 user identity became corrupted. I gave up after fighting with user permission levels and the like. They talked me through problems and took over my PC to do repairs directly.

Spencer Alexander was friendly and patient and very good at explaining things to me. He didn't get frustrated if I didn't understand something and just talked me through what I needed to do. It was a very pleasant experience and I will definitely be calling them again to help with my computer/technical needs.
Description of Work: Alexander Technical Resources "cleaned up" my 2007 Dell desktop that was running EXTREMELY slow. I called Mr Alexander and although he had another client, he was able to work both trouble shooting jobs without loss of quality to myself and the other client. He adjusted his billing rate to account for the time he was not working my issues. Mr. Alexander was able to remote into my computer and performed the fixes he found such as deleting worthless anti spy/virus malware. Cleaned my registry again deleting worthless entries placed by software that was causing conflicts with other programs. Donna also suggested the purchase of an external harddrive so that I will have a copy of my pictures and documents in another location if something should happen to my computer's hard-drive. I've used this company twice now and have been very satisfied with their service and their very positive response to my problems. They are also very patient with me since I'm not particularly computer literate which I appreciate very much. I'll continue to use them for my computer needs and will recommend them to friends and family
Description of Work: I asked Donna to help me locate some pictures I had "lost" of a recent vacation. Donna was immediately helpful and although we weren't able to locate the pictures I had lost. She was very helpful in regard to ways to avoid this problem in the future. She searched the complete C drive and various other places on the computer where pictures may have been stored.

It couln't have gone any better. Donna was on time, very friendly and went right to work. She kept me informed as she worked to let me know how she was progressing.
Description of Work: We had both our desktop and laptop computers worked on for two hours. We thought we were going to have to replace our desktop but Donna repair it and connected my laptop to the printer, cleaned up and installed an anti virus soft ware for us. I originally called this service to get help repairing my desktop. It had frozen a couple of times and I kept getting blue screens. I was able to set up an appointment right away, at a time convenient for me. Donna called me at the set time and was very pleasant and helpful. She guided me to set up the computer to connect with her remotely, everything was pretty easy to do. She also gave me lots of tips on what could be wrong with the computer, and told me where to look for problems and what could be done. Unfortunately, she was not able to fix the computer, although she did try for over an hour. She gave me suggestions for what to do with it (I decided to give up on that computer). So, I then asked Donna to help me with a laptop that was extremely slow. I hated using it because of how slow it worked. Donna was able to connect to it remotely, and worked on it for over an hour. I was able to go do stuff around the house while she worked on it. She installed free anti-virus protection, cleaned it out really well, and it definitely runs much faster now! There are times it slows down, especially when the anti-virus is running a scan, but it just doesn't compare to how it was working before. I've had 6 months to try it out since Donna worked on it, and I am very pleased. I would definitely hire them again, and highly recommend their services. I was reminded to write this review when Donna called me last week to see how the laptop is working. It's really nice to work with people like her, the follow-up call was much appreciated. But I can't forget to mention that Donna did not charge me for all the work she did on the desktop, since she was not able to fix it, even though she worked on that for quite a while. Great company!

Was having problems with a 2008 desktop PC. The machine would lock up, giving the user no other option than forced shut down using the power button. Once restarted, the machine ran quite slowly, would work for a few minutes, then lock up again. This company essentially performed a deep cleaning via remote dial-in access to my machine. The process took several hours, and I was able to leave home and continue with my work after an initial phone conference with Spencer. Spencer was professional and knowledgeable. He called me later in the day to review his work, let me ask questions, and confirm payment information. I was well pleased with the process, and the computer is running as well as can be expected for the age of the machine. Spencer's representative called me for a follow-up a few weeks later, and again a few months later which I thought was great customer service. Would definitely use them again, but obviously hope I don't have to.

Complicated task which involved transferring you tube videos to a word presentation and power point and then transferring entire presentation to my lap top. It took about 1-1/2 hours but finally got videos on power point. My lap top didn't have enough power to take them (not technicians fault). Problem came afterwards- my computer was totally polluted with Java stuf. Had to use local company (MouseCalls) to remedy that and it has never been entirely resolved. Technician was patient and got it done - but it was difficult for me being a non-tech person.
