The service guy Bob completes his maintenance check and reports that I need to replace my air filter which I agree was pretty bad. He also noticed sounds coming from my compressor unit outside and recommends that that work be done to it and quotes me $350 to replace a capacitor or $1800 to replace the compressor or $5500 to upgrade the entire system. Not knowing anything about A/C systems I don't know if these quotes are reasonable or not but since it seemed impending issues were just around the corner I opt for the capacitor replacement for $350. I tell Bob that I would have to get quotes from other companies before opting for the major repairs or upgrades. Bob assured me though that this $350 cost would be applied towards the compressor or system replacement should the worst happen in the next few months and I decide to go with his company.
Bob proceeds to tell me that he doesn't have a capacitor in his possession so he has to run to pick one up. He also says while there he can pick up an air filter for me. I tell him that's fine and off he goes. About 35 mins later he comes back with both the capacitor and air filter but only has an actual receipt for the air filter. This seems a bit odd to me but I let it go. Bob installs the new capacitor (just a matter of a few screws), restarts the system and every is still working fine.
Bob then prepares all of the paperwork and tells me that he had to pay out of his pocket the $3.88 for the air filter and gives me the receipt so I pay him $4.00. He then writes the cost of the capacitor in the service order as a flat rate with no breakdown of cost, labor or taxes. I would normally do my due diligence in getting quotes for repairs but since the repairman was there I went ahead and bit the bullet. However, in the back of my mind I was thinking that Bob inflated the cost of the capacitor replacement so that I would almost be forced to go with his company should further repairs be needed.
8 days pass and I decide to check prices out of curiosity for similar capacitors and find that on average the cost is about $35. Talk about inflating the repair! There's no way the labor would make up the difference since it's just a matter of loosening and tightening a few screws. Needless to say I wasn't happy and cancelled my service plan. I was a loyal customer but this incident left a very, very bad taste in my mouth.
To make things worse it's now 13 days after the capacitor replacement and now my compressor has died! Is it coincidence? Maybe, now I have to find another company to replace it but I can tell you it won't be Florida Home!
Since the installation, we've noticed the thermostat has to be turned down really low to get any air conditioning started. Whereas before, we'd set our thermostat to 75-78, now we're setting it to 71-72 just to get the house to cool down.
We called and had someone come and look, and he asked who'd installed it. I told the technician the name of the installer, and he rolled his eyes. So, apparently some politics going on, which I didn't really need to know about. Furthermore, it turns out the installation technician was supposed to use a wider intake hose. Instead, they left the original attached, which is smaller.
All in all, I would not recommend Florida Home. There are plenty of other and better companies in Jacksonville.
THey gave me an excellent deal on the air conditioner, but overall I wouldn't say that they are outstanding. My main thing with them is the fact that you never see the same people, and that it has changed hands, and when I first got it, all my air conditioning and appliances were covered. Then they sold that aspect, then they decided to do plumbing and air conditioning, and later they never notified anyone that they dropped the plumbing and I actually had a flood in the house and called them for a plumber and they said "Oh sorry, we're not doing that anymore". Now they just do air conditioing and heating. Overall just not an outstanding company, it used to be, but not anymore.
