I called and let the woman know my A/C drain was slow. When the A/C would run all day it would drip from the bottom of the air handler. She told me it would be $80.00 for the service call, then the the price of the repair. When he arrived I told him the problem also. He took off the cap to the drain. Borrowed a water pitcher from me and poured a pitcher of water down the drain pipe. He then wrote out a bill for the $80.00 service call and $199.00 for pouring the water down the drain pipe. When I questioned the price he said, "I don't make the prices" TRY ANYONE BUT DAVID GRAY such a rip off!!

I am sorry to hear that you had a bad experience on June 1, 2015 at your house. We charge a diagnostic plus repair for all items as most contractors in our industry do. We had a Company Protocol Change in July where we offer the customer a Preventative Maintenance Contract for $149 in lieu of the pvc drain cleaning that you approved and paid for. We were able to get your system back up in running the same day in about 1 hour from our time of arrival. We recommend clients pour vinegar in the drain line monthly to keep it purged and clear of obstructions. After speaking with you our technicians will pour water in the drain line as you indicated to make sure that it is clear and draining properly, and after discussing with you further I offered the Preventative Maintenance Contract for no additional charge and you declined. I feel that we have exhausted all options and tried to remedy the call to the best of our ability. I am sorry that we could not be of further service or help.

I'm very unhappy with their service. Basically, the guy came out and tested my unit. He said there's power to it. He told me that my fan motor was still good but he had to rewire it. He said it's $85 for the rewire and $89 for the service call and $200 for the relay. It came to $450. He got it all done and he had blown out my motor in the process. In turn, he basically ruined my blower motor to the point where I had to purchase the new one which costed me $1000. I did call and complained to the supervisor. They came out and replaced it. They did everything to try and make it right. When it came time for my bill, I was still getting way overcharged for the items that were installed. I did a quick search on the items that they installed because they're all on my invoice. When you put in a relay that only costs your company $6 and you charge your customer $195 for the relay. My motor was priced three times its price. They put Freon in my system which I didn't ask them to do. They charged me $85 a pound. It took me two weeks of haggling to get down to that. They're pretty good at getting back to you.
Description of Work: My fan motor quit working so he came out and tested the power supply to it.

Response from David Gray Heating & Air
I apologize for the issue that has occurred. We at David Gray Heating & Air value our clients and each of their situations. We were called out for a system not cooling and made the diagnostic that we needed to replace multiple relays and multiple wire connections on the outdoor unit that were burned from some sort of power surge/short to the unit. We recommended to replace the wire connections and the relays to get the system up and running to check the operation of the unit. The work was approved and the parts were installed, after the parts were replaced it was determined that additional parts would also be needed to get the unit back up and running to manufacturer specification from the apparent power surge. Customer declined additional work and we unwired the unit so it would not try to turn on causing any further damage to the system because the customer stated the repair was too expensive at this time. 1 week later we received a call from the customer that he had another company out and they wanted to charge him to rewire the unit that we left unwired per his direction because he could get a window unit that was more cost effective. We agreed to come back out at and install the parts that we recommend the week prior and the homeowner agreed so we could get the system back up and running. When we arrived the customer was not home and instructed us to make the repairs that he would be home shortly. Upon completion of work the customer was still not home so we left the system working and operating per manufacturer specification and billed the customer the original price quoted for repair. The customer stated that he can find the materials & parts cheaper on the internet. We agreed to adjust the pricing to what the customer had found on the internet and even after that customer has still not paid his bill from the repair made. I am pleased to say that we were able to resolve your issue based on our first diagnostic that was not approved. I feel that we have done everything possible to handle this issue with you and it has been resolved correctly.

They ran into a smidgen of trouble and resolved it right away. It meant extra work for them for the install, which they did with a professional integrity that is something to be proud of. I recommend them.
Description of Work: Installed air handler and new unit. Trane was a newer model of 18 seer. *I* wanted the more expensive seer rating and was *not* pushed towards that sale. The new copper wiring was installed and thermostat as well. They worked so hard! They had to run all new lines as the old areas were no longer able to be used. (Courtesy of the builders of this home)

Tech arrived as scheduled and went right to work. Found a bad condenser capacitor almost immediately and quoted me $202 plus $79 service call which I thought was considered high but this is Florida and I needed the AC fixed. Tech was nice enough...after changing the capacitor which took about 5 minutes, he spent about half an hour regaling me with opinions and comments about other topics he clearly had no actual knowledge of as well as his political views while going through my air handler...found no other issues. In all, the job was completed promptly and efficiently and he did check the air handler, though he said he couldn't check the refrigerant levels because he could not access the ports (it is in a tough place to get to). Could have done without all the chatter...the first words out of his mouth when I answered the door were a criticism of my choice of porch decorations and went downhill from there. Seemed like a nice enough fellow though, and he fixed my AC which was the most relevant point. Just needed to tone the rhetoric and BS a bit.
Description of Work: Changed one capacitor that took 5 minutes. I was told the part cost $202 and the service call was $79. Seemed pretty high considering how little time it took.

Gray plumbing came out for a preventative maintenance on 6-24-14 and indicated that the system was 2 pounds low on refrigerant. They charged me $75 for the service and $85 for 1 pound of refrigerant, even though they said they put in 2 pounds. They indicated that the next 6 mo. service would indicate whether there was a leak. Gray plumbing returned in 6 months to perform the maintenance on my a/c unit on 11-10-14 and indicated that there were no problems. The cost for this preventative maintenance was $75. On 11-21-14, I did not feel there was sufficient heat coming out of the unit. They came out, rechecked the system, and indicated that the unit was low on refrigerant and that there was an evaporator coil leak. None of this was stated 11 days earlier. They charged $170 to replace 1 pound of refrigerant and indicated that they would give me that credit if I purchased a new unit from them for $5981. The unit that they recommended was a Goodman, whom I later found out has a multi-million dollar class action law suit pending because of the alleged sale of defection air conditioners. Within hours, I called the service manager to advise him that it was unethical to put refrigerant into a system that was going to be replaced as well as making the assumption that I would use their company to do the work. He agreed not to charge my credit card. While this was the right thing to do, it never should have occurred in the first place. Had I not called, I would have been charged $170. Another reputable company replaced the unit for $4700, almost $1300 less. I got a quality and reputable brand: Carrier. Many of my neighbors have used the company I chose to go with. In essence, not only was David Gray A/C unethical, but they were charging more than 25% above on of their competitors. In addition, they were selling a brand that is in the middle of litigation for knowingly selling defective air conditioners. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To respond to what the company wrote on 1-16-15: While David Gray checked "public records" and saw the amount that I paid, they clearly do not know how that $6297 was allocated. My unit was $4700; the remainder was for adding duct work ($850) and enlarging duct work ($750). Therefore, without sufficient information, they comfortably misspoke. I got a better brand, a larger unit, and a savings of $1300 compared to what David Gray quoted. The fact is indisputable that David Gray's quote was 25% higher. That's substantial. Their lengthy response had no relevance other than they were trying to capitalize on the times I was not charged due to a preventative maintenance agreement. The company took extraordinary efforts to wrongly defend their actions, and, for me, that speaks further to the integrity of the company.
Description of Work: Added 1 pound of refrigerant because evaporator coil was leaking. Indicated they would deduct $170 from price of new a/c which was priced at $5981. They assumed I would choose to use them as opposed to getting a second opinion or a second estimate. If I chose to use a different company, I would have needlessly added refrigerant to a system that would be replaced by a system that did not use the same refrigerant and, therefore, would have lost $170.

We have appreciated your business since June 2014 and we are sorry that we can not continue your agreement on one of our Annual Preventative Maintenance Plans. When you called in initially for the system not cooling you opted for one of our Annual PM Plans starting at $149, plus when you did this we waived our $89 diagnostic charge. We perform all System Diagnostics and PM Agreements the same for every client. The system refrigerant charge was off so we recommended adding refrigerant to bring the system back into normal operating pressures per manufacturers specification. The work was approved and completed at the time of service. We were called in July 2014 for poor airflow and we came out. Since you were a PM Customer you were not charge a diagnostic fee of $89. We made our recommendations to add an additional run of ductwork and it was declined until a further date. We came out for the second trip of your Annual PM Agreement November 2014 and performed the maintenance as we did back in July. You called 2 weeks after our visit because of a heating issue. We came back out again and since you were an Annual PM Contract holder you were not charge the $89 diagnostic charge. The technician noted that there was a small leak on the indoor coil. At that point we gave you the option of a repair or replacement on the system. No Company will ever quote the same exact equipment or present the same pricing, there are too many variables unless you specifically ask for the same equipment based on Model Numbers that the manufactures specify. We made our recommendations to replace the unit for $5,981.12 After looking into public records you paid $6,297 which is actually 5% more than we quoted so I am not sure how we were 25% higher? You can find bad press for anything on the internet and it comes down to who stands behind their problems and how they are fixed. The manufacturer has stood behind any issues that we have had and we stand behind them to make sure if there is a problem that it gets fixed accordingly. We do not present bad press as a Contractor, we just present options like we have always done. There was an issue with the charge and we were more than happy to refund that charge to you. I am sorry that we could not have been of any further assistance.

When my JEA bill came in December, it was $373, up from $177 the month before. It took 3 days for one of the owners to return my call. He took no responsibility for the expensive suggestion from his technician which more than doubled my bill the following month. He also refused to return the filters I had ordered and instead of cancelling my annual maintenance agreement with them, he said that they would charge me $107 for one trip instead of $149 for 2 trips. He then said that they couldn't control my JEA bill and then abruptly ended the call.
Description of Work: Checked the system and said that I needed a repair that would cost approximately $700. My heat was also tripping out. He said that if I would turn the system to emergency heat, it wouldn't cut off. I told him that I would like to wait to get through Christmas until I could have the work done. .

We strive for Complete Customer Satisfaction and always attempt to resolve issues that arise. We performed our 2 of 2 Preventative Maintenance on 11/21/2014 per our contract and the customer renewed at that time for $149. Customer called on 11/24/2014 and stated that she was not getting any heat. As an Annual Preventative Maintenance Holder our clients do not get charged our $89 diagnostic charge so we went out to determine the issue and made our recommendations to repair the TXV Valve. My technician instructed her that if she needed heat to run her Emergency/Auxiliary Heat until the repair can be approved/made. Emergency Heat is for Back-Up Use Only and not intended to be run for an extended period of time. Customer declined repair but did want filters ordered. Order was placed 12/3/2014 and would be 2-3 weeks until they arrived at our office and client agreed to pricing and availability. These filters were a special order/non-returnable item because of the size needed. We left a message 12/17/2014 around 3 pm to let the client know filters were ready for delivery and we could drop them off anytime that week when we are in the area. Client called us back on 12/17/2014 around 4pm to discuss her higher than normal electric bill from JEA. I left a message for the home owner on her house phone 12/18/2014 around 3pm. The client called back the following day 12/19/2014 and left a message to call her on her cell phone. I contacted the client on her cell phone as instructed on 12/19/2014 around 1pm and left a message. Finally we were able to make contact later that afternoon after 2pm to discuss the clients JEA Bill. Customer wanted to be compensated the difference in her utility bill because it was higher than normal. I explained to the client that her HVAC System is not operating per manufacturers specification nor will it function in an efficient manner because the repair that is needed controls the heating side of her unit. The customer said that if she would have known that her bill would have more than double that she would have never turned on her heat. I explained to her that there is no way for us to determine her utility consumption nor do we guarantee what your JEA bill will be on a month to month basis. Client wanted to cancel her filter order and her P.M. contract. I instructed her that since the filters were a special order/non-returnable item that she would still be responsible for them. I also explained to her that since we were out 11/21/2014 and back out on 11/24/2014 that I would warranty the call for $89 and not charge because we value our customers and try to help on billing issues. We have credited the difference between the filters and the P.M. contract to the client. I feel that we communicated all the issues and tried to resolve the problem as any Contractor would have to the best of our ability and in a timely manner.

I have a written estimate but they have not returned my phone calls or set a date for the work, or returned the form I need to take to the condominium home owners association. It has now been about two and a half months since the first contact ... still no air in my condo. The estimate was reasonable, but no response from company on actually doing the work. Very disappointed. I am willing to talk and very much interested in having the work completed.

My AC died late on Friday of Memorial Day Weekend. I called a vendor who had serviced the 21-year old system in the past and they wanted double the charge to come out for a service call. I checked the yellow pages and found David Gray Plumbing, Heating & Air. I had used them for plumbing service but didn't think to call them for the AC. I was very satisfied with the plumbing service so checked Angie's List for David Gray H&A and found the reviews to be exceptional. Plus, there was no additional charge for it being after hours and a holiday weekend. So, I took the leap. Mike came out on Saturday morning and checked the system which turned out to have a locked fan motor. We talked about it a bit and I made a couple of phone calls and we all agreed that the cost to fix the fan motor was not worth putting in to such an old system. Mike was able to get a quote worked up for me and an installation date of the Tuesday morning after Memorial Day. Will & Jason arrived as expected at 9:30am and proceeded to remove the old equipment out (the air handler was in a very cramped, uncomfortably hot attic) and install the handler, sealed all the ductwork, installed a new condensing unit, Thermostat and whatever else needed to complete the new install. Both men were pleasant to deal with and very professional. I had no qualms about leaving them at the house while I went to get them lunch. It was an all-day, hot job and they handled it with grace. They did little extra things that one wouldn't expect and were very conscientious about cleaning up. I would have this company do all my work in the house if I could.

I will not do business with a company that can't even keep an appointment. That to me is the first thing they need to do right. If you can't do that no telling what other issues they would have.
Description of Work: I never got to see what kind of service they would provide. I called and requested and an estimate on a new air conditioner. Made an appointment, made arrangements to have somewhere there and the last minute I get a call that he had a meeting and could not be there. OK, I guess things happen, so I called and asked to set up another appointment and no one ever called me back.

I am sorry for any inconvenience that we caused and the confusion that incurred. We did have a scheduled day/time set with you and unfortunately the Estimator was running behind that day and was unable to make the appointment that was scheduled. When we called back to reschedule we were given a second point of contact to coordinate with, unfortunately after playing phone tag we could not get scheduling committed and therefore set-up a day/time with the new contact. As with all of our calls we try to accommodate a day/time that works for you, but in some cases we fail so on that and I do apologize. I feel that even though we needed to reschedule because of time constraints that we tried our best to schedule with the additional parties as instructed. Once again I am sorry that we could not get a day/time lined up with you for the replacement of your equipment.
