They were easy to contact. They explained to me carefully what they were going to do. They showed me photographs before and after of the roof and the changes.
Description of Work: They repaired a roof that had been leaking that other contractors had tried to repair by patching. They ended up recovering a large portion of our roof.

They didn't come on the day that I thought we'd agreed to. But they did come before the next rain. They explained what was found in inspection, showed me old material and what would be used to replace it and thoroughly explained the process. In addition, they took "before", "during", and "after" Polaroid pictures so I could see the work that was done. I have a small flat roof, so the job was completed in less than an hour. They were very professional, courteous and I would highly recommend them.
Description of Work: I had a leaking roof. They found and replaced the deteoriated roofing material and coated the surface.

Mr. Keith responded to my phone call within 24 hours. He came on a day when it was raining, and still got out on that roof to do an assessment. He was willing to answer the 1001 questions my husband and I had several days later when we were discussing the proposal. Once we agreed to the service, Mr. Keith was able to come within the week, and have all the work done in less than 1 business day. They cleaned up after themselves, so you couldn't even tell that a bunch of workmen had been walking through the house. He took pictures of the roof before the work began, and then as the work proceeded, he took pictures to show what they had done. This let me know that the job was comparable to the price quoted, something I was leary about considering we have owned the house for less than a year. He was right on the money. I was very pleased with him and his company.
Description of Work: I had two leaks caused by poor workmanship in the installation of two skylights (done before I bought the house). The roof is flat, REALLY old, and part of an old Fed style row house on The Hill. The problem around the skylight was assessed and fixed as well as as several other problem areas that were on their way to becoming serious problems. The roof was then given a protective coating for maintenance and protection.

Mr. Keith called me back shortly after I left a message, was doing some work in my neighborhood, and went right over to my house after I described the problem over the phone. He called me back a couple of hours later to report the problem: the flashing on my 1920s row house had rusted away, and rain was coming in to the area between the flat roof and the sloped roof. There were also problems around a vent pipe, and with the junction between the roof of my house and that of my neighbor's attached row house. Mr. Keith scheduled a crew for the following week, and described exactly what they would be doing. The crew came on time, were done quickly, and provided four polaroid photos of the work they did. And during the next big rain, the ceiling in the attic didn't leak. Mr. Keith also suggested some other repairs that could be done, but didn't pressure me when I said I'd need to wait a while for my budget to permit considering more roof work.
Description of Work: Repaired flashing and areas of the roof that were leaking into attic. Sealed joints between flat roof and sloped roof, and repaired joints between my row house and my neighbor's.

Extremely well. They were able to schedule an appointment, make the review and undertake the repairs in record time. I believe I got great service and was pleased with the price and quality of the work. I sought out 3 estimates and Keith's was in the middle. The work was done in half a day. It was great.
Description of Work: I needed a minor leak, located about a skylight, repaired and have the overall health of the roof assessed. The roof is flat, atop an old Fed style row house on The Hill. The problem around the skylight was assessed and fixed as well as a few other potential problem areas identified and repaired. The roof was then given a protective coating for maintenance and protection.

It happened during a really bad time when there was a lot of storms going on. I called them and they responded very quickly. They were able to come out the same day. It only took them a couple of days. And I recently I had to call them back out because I noticed a leak by my skylight. So I called them and had them come out and look at the roof to make sure it wasn't the roof and it ended up being the skylight had a crack in it so I thought that was very professional considering I hadn't used them in about 6 or 7 months.

Promptly came to assess the problem (within 1 day), quickly scheduled and completed the repair within the next 2 days; promptly returned the following day after resurfacing to follow up on a leaky spot and make further reinforcements. Reassured us that he would be checking on the porch as well as the main roof from time to time, and would be responsible for maintaining the integrity of the roof.

Over the weekend when it was pouring outside, I noted a leak in my roof that led to dripping through my ceiling. I had had the roof replaced four or five years earlier, but had problems with that roofer, so did not want to call them. First thing Monday morning, I called and spoke with Mr. Keith, Sr. who sent over the younger Mr. Keith to look at the roof. He took pictures and explained to me why the tar was not a good material for use in the way it was on my flat roof. They finished the work that day, even though it was still drizzling a little, and took pictures of the work as it was being completed. A few days later the AC man was checking the air and noticed the work that had been done and its quality. While they were a little pricey, they did the work and a little more than what was contracted for, were quick and efficient, and I know I could call back if I needed to. Sometimes you get what you pay for, as I learned with my previous experience.
Description of Work: They patched several places on my roof that had dried out tar causing leaks with higher grade rubber.

Upon recommendation of Angie's List I called for a quote. I was looking to add venting to my roof and at the same time I was going to have the aluminum coating re-done. Mr. Keith answered immediately and agreed to stop by that afternoon. Mr. Keith called to set a specific arrival time and showed up as agreed. The inspection took about 10 minutes and included a photo. We discussed the possibility of venting the roof and Mr. Keith recommended against it because it would have little value and cost a lot. I decided not to do the work this year because my aluminum coating will last another year. I appreciated the appraisal and honest assessment of work required.

I found Hugh Keith and his son to be exceptionally professional, thorough and quite helpful in providing me the information I needed to relay to my clients. They provided us with a clear understanding of the current condition of the roof and exactly what would need to be done to extend the life of the roof and the cost involved. I believe my clients will be contracting with Keith to actually do the repairs, but I was quite pleased with the services provided.

Mr. Keith was very responsive and came the day after I called to provide an estimate. He was very consumer-friendly and kind -- but I did not go with them due to their extremely high price compared to other companies. In the end I got this work done for 1/4 the price that Mr. Keith was charging and I feel as though it was possible that Mr. Keith was trying to take advantage of me being a woman and put out an inordinately high price. I do believe that he was planning to use somewhat more expensive materials and would have done a fantastic job with great service, but given his repair would have been half the price of another company's entire replacement of the roof it just wouldn't make any sense to pay this much for repairs. I would highly recommend getting multiple estimates before going with this provider to feel comfortable with the value. ($4,200)
Description of Work: My flat roof needed to be repaired where many areas were splitting though there were no leaks yet. Also a part of the roof is aluminum and was rusting and needed to be scraped down then painted and sealed.

WE DID NOT PERFORM ANY WORK FOR THIS MEMBER, WE ONLY PROVIDED THEM WITH A ESTIMATE. THIS MEMBER'S ROOF NEEDED MAJOR REPAIRS, THEY HAD MANY SKYLIGHTS LOCATED ON THERE ROOF THAT NEEDED TO BE RE-FLASHED, AND ALSO THE ROOF NEEDED TO BE PREPARED AND COATED. THIS MEMBER ASKED US TO PROVIDE HER WITH AN ESTIMATE FOR ALL THE WORK THAT NEEDED TO BE DONE TO HER ROOF, WE DID THAT AND GAVE HER AN ACCURATELY PRICED ESTIMATE FOR THAT WORK. IN THE END SHE DECIDED TO JUST HAVE SOMEONE PATCH HER ROOF WITH CEMENT IN SOME AREAS AND COAT HER ROOF WITHOUT ADDRESSING THE OTHER ISSUES ON HER ROOF. SHE WAS ABLE TO HAVE THE WORK DONE FOR LESS MONEY BY HAVING LESS WORK DONE, BUT YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. WE ARE LICENSED CONTRACTORS WHO USE HIGH QUALITY MATERIALS THAT LAST A LONG TIME, AND WE GUARANTEE ALL OUR WORK.

Mr. Keith responded very quickly when I called and was up on my roof the same day, taking pictures and explaining what needed to be done. He gave me an estimate the next day. The job was done over the course of the next two days after I gave them the go ahead. Everything was done on time - even a bit earlier than expected - and according the estimate. We've had no issues with the roof since they installed it (four months ago). Overall they did a great job - very responsive and timely.

Keith Roofing responded to my initial call promptly were able to start the work within days. They completed the work in 2 days as promised. Mr. Keith was extremely pleasant to work with and very knowledgeable; he answered all of my questions patiently and completely. The workmen were efficient, friendly, and cleaned up after themselves. Several months later I had a leak and I called Keith company. They responded promptly and were as friendly as they had been before. The problem was found to be not related to the roof they installed but to an old and dried out mansard seal. Mr. Keith fixed this problem that same day and did not charge me for the work. In addition, they noticed a satellite dish that had been left, disconnected, after a new one was recently installed. Mr. Keith had the men take the satellite off the roof as another courtesy. I recommend this company without hesitation.
Description of Work: Keith Roofing installed a modified bitumen rubber flat-roof system with a 1/2 inch insulation board over the old roof on our 1916 Wardman row house in the city. The house is attached to another house on one side only. They also installed a new galvanized metal drip edge on the back edge of the main roof.

I called Mr. Keith and he went over the same day to look at the roof and gave me an estimate right away. The day after I told him I wanted to proceed, he had his crew at my house and did the work in the one day he promised. I wasn't able to meet him at the house, give him the check for payment, so he went to my workplace. I was very pleased with the work and the helpfulness of Mr. Keith.

Mr. Keith contacted me promptly via telephone and scheduled a time to visit. He was willing to inspect without my presence and was willing to access my roof despite chilly weather and recent snowfall. He took photographs of the roof, wrote an estimate, and left it in my mailbox. He followed up via telephone and explained in detail what he saw, what repairs were needed, and how much they would cost. He indicated photographs would be taken before, during, and after the work. He was very courteous throughout and followed up a few weeks later with a voicemail (that I neglected to return).
Description of Work: Mr. Keith inspected my roof and determined the surface, flashings, and areas around its vents required application of Firestone APP 170 (which is bitumen compound that consists of asphalt and atactic polypropylene). Based on my procurement of other estimates, discussions with neighbors/friends, and on-line research, the estimate of $2700 seemed exorbitant. Especially when Firestone APP 170 is inexpensive and my roof is 620 square feet! Estimated cost was $2,750.

Description of Work: I have a flat roof which was apparently very poorly patched years ago in a number of places. Mr. Keith assessed the issues, took Polaroid pictures and left them for me, with a contract in my mail box. I didn't have to be home for him to assess it and do the work.

I called Keith Roofing & Mr. Keith (son) answered the called. They had a truck in the neighborhood and stopped by. Mr. Keith went on the roof and provided pictures of the problems w/ the roof and explained the problem in detail. He also showed me his license information as well as a sample of the material he planned to use on the roof and explained the repair process in detail. Although I received a cheaper estimate, I chose Mr. Keith based on his professionalism and attention to detail. A crew came by the next day and installed the roof. We were in the middle of a drought so we could not test the roof. When it did rain, there was a leak (BUT NOT DUE TO THE ROOF). The house is very old and there was a drain pipe coming into the house that was cracked. Mr Keith & his crew returned & took care of problem beyond the scope of the contract. They also called to follow-up after the rains to make sure everything was OK. I am very pleased w/ Keith Roofing and will use them again. Very pleasant!

Mr. Keith and his son were courteous, punctual, and thorough. Their explanations made sense and their price seemed reasonable. In the end we went with a different company. We asked one of the other roofing estimators why they didn't use the torch down type roofing (the type Mr. Keith proposed using for both the repair or the replacement), not mentioning that we already had an estimate for this type. We were told that because the torch down type requires what is essentially an open flame on your roof, DC requires a permit. Mr. Keith offered to do the torch down repairs on the same day that he gave the estimate. Mr. Keith was not in the least worried about me talking with the permit folks since he felt confident in what he was telling me. I'm very inclined to give Mr. Keith the benefit of the doubt. I don't have a definitive answer but I feel that Mr. Keith is very honest and is happy to let people check out his business practices. He clearly cares a great deal.
Description of Work: Hugh Keith and his son came out and gave us estimates on repairing or replacing our roof. The younger Keith climbed up on the roof and took detailed photos. They explained what/where they thought the problems were and gave us two estimates, one for a repair only and another for a complete replacement because they felt that the roof probably wouldn't last too much longer. (Estimate was $2700.)

I called in the afternoon and Mr. Keith was able to schedule an estimate at 9am the following morning because they had another project in our area. He was very friendly and professional on the phone. Mr. Keith and his son arrived promptly at 9am, as scheduled and by 9:30 provided me with an assessment of the problem including Polaroid pictures. In addition, they provided pictures of several other problem areas they found that included cracked and peeling sealant around most of the roof penetrations (identified above). I agreed to the estimate and they provided a written contract that included a one year guarantee of the work. Price included a 5% discount advertised on Angie's List. I did not get additional estimates (so did not rate price) because they were able to complete the work that same morning, I felt comfortable with them, and they had positive Angie's List reports for price. Overall, I was very satisfied with this company. Only downside: They do not accept credit cards.
Description of Work: We own a row house in northwest Washington, DC, with a slate cupola at the front and a flat rubber roof covering the majority of the structure. I called Keith & Company Roofing to repair a piece of metal flashing that had come loose from the cupola on the front of the house and extend a section of metal flashing on the outer wall at the rear of the house to cover a seam that had previously leaked. After finding additional problems with the roof during their inspection, total work included replacing the metal flashing along the entire front of the cupola at the base of the tiles, added the new flashing on the rear of the house, added "Firestone 170 APP torch down modified Bitumen rubber" around three roof vents and the chimney, and reattached several slate tiles that had broken loose from the cupola. The work was completed in 4 1/2 hours including the initial inspection and estimate.

First Problem: I told him that our roof was probably two layers, a layer of metal and a layer of rubber. He said "because the roof is less than three layers." Four other roofing companies have told me I can't have more than two layers on the roof. Second: He was only willing to offer I year Labor warranty. Other reputable roofers are willing to offer 10-year warranties on the labor for comparable prices. I believe he couldn't offer me a manufacture's warranty because he was not removing the existing roof. I spoke to Firestone (the company that makes the rubber) and was told that labor warranty is the most important because leaks occur to poor installation, not defects in material. Third: His proposal is bare and handwritten. He does not specify the quality of flashing used. Professionals do not scrawl a couple lines on an $8,700 job that supposed to last for 30 years.
Description of Work: No work was performed because he gave poor roofing advice and offered no warranties. He later offered a 1 year labor and 10 year manufacturing warranty.

NO WORK WAS PERFORMED FOR THIS MEMBER. WE ONLY PROVIDED HER WITH A ESTIMATE. I AM SORRY TO SAY THIS MEMBER IS VERY CONFUSED. FIRST OF ALL WE MADE IT VERY CLEAR TO THIS MEMBER AS LICENSED CONTRACTORS WE GIVE WARRANTIES ON ALL OF OUR WORK. WE EXPLAINED TO THIS MEMBER FOR THIS TYPE OF ROOF SYSTEM WE HAD GIVEN THE PROPOSAL FOR SHE WOULD RECEIVE A 10-YEAR MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY ON THE MATERIAL AND A ONE YEAR WARRANTY ON THE LABOR. AS FOR INSTALLING A ADDITIONAL ROOF OVER TOP OF THIS MEMBER'S CURRENT ROOF BECAUSE OF THERE BEING ONLY 2 LAYERS OF ROOFING THERE, THAT IS SOMETHING THAT IS DONE ALL THE TIME. WE WORK WITH THE DISTRICT GOVERNMENT'S DCRA AND HAVE INSTALLED OVERLAYS ON ROOFS FOR THEM THE SAME WAY. AS LONG AS THERE IS NO PROBLEMS WITH THE STRUCTURE OR WOOD UNDERNEATH THE SURFACE OF THE CURRENT ROOF,AND AS LONG AS THERE IS LESS THEN 3 LAYERS OF ROOFING YOU HAVE THE OPTION OF DOING AN OVERLAY. WE SIMPLY GAVE THIS OPTION TO THIS MEMBER. WE HAVE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE ROOFS WE HAVE INSTALLED MANY YEARS AGO. AND WE ALSO ALWAYS GUARANTEE ALL OF OUR WORK.

My main reason for not considering this roofer seriously was because he was unwilling to warranty his workmanship for more than a year. I find it difficult to spend over 10 grand for something that the workman does not have enough confidence in his workmanship to give me at least a 5 year warranty. Obviously those who have had work done in the last year have been happy. What about those who had work done 5 years ago. Few people inspect the work a roofer does and he knows it. This man has a good reputation, but I am not willing to gamble when the workman is not.
Description of Work: No work was performed. The estimate was $10,300 to rip off a two layered row house roof and replace with a material that was either rubber or something like it. I do not remember if it was a torch down material or a cold application product.

Response from Keith Roofing
WE DID NOT WORK FOR THIS MEMBER, WE HAD ONLY PROVIDED THEM WITH A ESTIMATE. AFTER THIS MEMBER HAD RECEIVED OUR ESTIMATE FOR THE TYPE OF ROOF THEY WANTED TO HAVE INSTALLED, THEY SAID THEY WERE HAPPY WITH THE PROPOSAL. THERE ONLY COMPLAINT WAS THE WARRANTY WE WERE OFFERING FOR THAT SPECIFIC TYPE OF ROOF. UNFORTUNATELY IT HAS BEEN OUR COMPANY'S POLICY FOR MANY YEARS ON THAT TYPE OF ROOF SYSTEM TO OFFER A TEN YEAR MANUFACTURES WARRANTY ON THE MATERIAL AND A ONE YEAR WARRANTY ON THE LABOR FOR THAT SPECIFIC TYPE OF ROOF SYSTEM. I CAN UNDERSTAND AND APPRECIATE THE FACT THIS MEMBER HAS HAD MANY BAD EXPERIENCES IN THE PAST WITH OTHER COMPANY'S DOING WORK ON THEIR HOME. BUT THAT DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE WORK OUR COMPANY PERFORMS. OUR CUSTOMERS HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE ROOFS WE HAVE INSTALLED MANY YEARS AGO AND BY LOOKING AT OUR OTHER REPORTS ON ANGIE'S LIST YOU CAN SEE WE HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE WORK WE HAVE PERFORMED.

Keith returned my call re: a roof inspection. He insisted on inspecting the roof while I was not home to fit more easily in his schedule. Although I told him that there was possible water damage on the ceiling joists in the attic, it was more a less take it or leave it. So I took it. He gave me his honest opinion of the roof repair and left an estimate and followed through later to check if I wanted to do the work. All in all not bad, but it would have simply made me feel better to meet Keith at the site.

Response from Keith Roofing
THIS MEMBER HAD CONTACTED US FOR A ESTIMATE ON SOME WORK SHE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE DONE. AFTER SHE HAD PROVIDED US WITH HER ADDRESS, WE DISCOVERED WE HAPPEN TO HAVE A TRUCK WORKING IN HER AREA NOT FAR. THE MEMBER COULD OF MADE AN APPOINTMENT FOR A TIME MORE CONVENIENT SO SHE COULD MEET US AT THE HOME. BUT I JUST MENTIONED TO HER SINCE WE HAD A TRUCK CLOSE BY WE COULD HAVE THEM STOP BY AND INSPECT THE ROOF WITH OUR LADDER. WE DO THIS A LOT FOR OUR CUSTOMERS WHO WORK BUSY HOURS WHO CAN'T TAKE TIME OFF TO MEET US AT THERE HOME. THE MEMBER SAID THAT WOULD BE FINE, SHE DID NOT MENTION SHE WOULD PREFER IF WE WOULD SCHEDULE THE ESTIMATE FOR A TIME WHEN SHE COULD BE HOME. IF SHE HAD, WE WOULD OF GLADLY RESCHEDULED FOR A MORE CONVENIENT TIME. WE LEFT THIS MEMBER A DETAILED ESTIMATE ALONG WITH POLAROID PICTURES OF THE ROOF. WE WILL ALWAYS SCHEDULE OUR ESTIMATES AT TIMES THAT ARE CONVENIENT FOR OUR CUSTOMERS AND THEIR SCHEDULES.
