Pascale, the owner, called promptly to set up an appointment for a energy audit of my 1925 brick house. She (and her colleague Ethan) made thorough assessment and explained her findings in detail. At my request, she provided a proposal for remediation measures and revised it to respond to questions and concerns that I raised in an extensive phone discussion. I decided to contract with her firm for most (but not all) of the recommended measures (sealing of rim band joists and openings; increase in attic insulation). The work was done efficiently and competently (as far as a layman can tell) and the workers were careful to clean up. (In retrospect, though, I would not have had them work on the fireplace damper, which led to a dust deposit in the living room.) She used another firm for the insulation work. Overall, a positive experience, although Pascale can be slow in responding to e-mails.
Description of Work: I needed an audit of energy use and assessment of possible remediation measures to reduce energy wastage.

Gave me a breakdown of different work and priced it out. Discussed each piece and explained what they found clearly and simply. I have not done the work yet--but plan on having them do some of the work they proposed as as well as doing some myself. I would recommend anyone to have them do an audit.

The technicians came out on time and seemed to did a thorough job. However, their estimation to fix from the inspection was unbelievably high. I asked for a breakdown of the cost but the owner was unwilling to provide the cost breakdown.

Response from ENERGY EFFICIENCY EXPERTS
Hi, I did your audit, and thank you for saying we did a thorough job. I wanted to respond to your comments about the estimate. We follow BPI (Building Performance) guidelines. Health and safety come first and them getting the most bang for your buck is second. For example, bathroom fans venting into the attic can cause mold, so bathroom fans must be vented outside (you have 2 fans on the top floor). The top-plates and all penetrations going into the house must be sealed and recessed lights must be covered so they are insulation compatible. These types of items make an insulation job more expensive, on the other hand you know you are getting a job well done. I'm sorry I can't just send an estimate over email, I used to do that and clients would call me 2 or 3 weeks later asking questions about the job and I could not remember their house any more. I can do an estimate over the computer in a "Go to Meeting" or I can come to your house. Either way I would give you the estimate and answer any questions you have about the job.

Great! They were on time and went through the whole house. It was a little rushed at the end, but probably more my fault than theirs (because I didn't allocate enough time). They also provided a very helpful written report.

Words will do no justice to tell how much I liked Energy Efficiency Experts. They came to my house for an energy audit and spend more than 3 hours poking around all possible cracks to identify the air leaks (with the cool whole-house air pump, see picture), and provided me with a useful, detailed report, which also compared my house to comparable houses. I'm looking forward to have them come to do the actual insulating.

EEE added insulation and performed sealing in my attic, part of which is 90-years old plus a 10-year old addition that wasn't that well constructed or sealed. They also added insulation under the floor of the addition, which should have been insulated but was not. Finally, they did an array of sealing and weather stripping as indicated as needed by a home energy audit (cost of that was $400, but there's a Pepco rebate so it was only $100). Ethan, the foreman, was pleasant and efficiently led the sub-contractors who did the insulation. Photos of hard to see areas were a helpful sales tool, but I also would have appreciated seeing after photos too.
Description of Work: We just had Energy Efficiency Experts (EEE) re-do an energy audit on our place and then do the recommended up-grades like more insulation, sealing, weather stripping, etc. Eight years ago when we bought the house, we had an energy audit done by a friend who was shuttering his business because he was going to run the program for the state. Because of his transition, he wasn't able to do the work, and we forgot about it. Long story short, we decided it was time to act after a major roof repair. EEE did the work, and Pascale's estimate was essentially the same as the one from 8 years ago, so I think her prices are fair. I was also happy to hire a women owned and run business. In addition, they've learned a lot over the intervening years, so in some ways I am glad we waited to do the work. BTW, apparently the Pepco/state of Maryland program is set to change in 2017 to focus more on major appliances, so if you know you need insulation, now is a good time to act while the $2K Pepco rebate is still in play.

Flawless service from scheduling through report delivery and payment. Pascale and her team were easy to work with and very thorough. We made initial contact online and Andee called set the appointment. We got a reminder call the day before. The team led by Pascale arrived on time and worked for over two and a half hours. The work included a complete interior inspection of the attic crawl space, a blower test where a large fan in sealed in place of the open front door to test for air leaks, inspections of the furnace, hot water heater, and air conditioner. They check all the light bulbs and replaced three incandescent bulbs I had overlooked. Pascale reviewed the report with us which included pictures of problem areas (missing insulation in the attic, vent ducting that is no longer to code, compromised insulation on AC refrigerant pipe...). The report was very specific to our house and included analysis of electric and gas usage and compared those to similar sized homes in the area. Pascale demonstrated to us a potential safety issue with the hot water heater and discussed a range of options to address it including a couple free fixes. The report concludes with a list of specific recommendations. The audit costs $400 but Pepco covers $300 of that cost which Energy Efficiency Experts collects directly from Pepco. Our out of pocket expense was $100.

It went really well! My place is notoriously hard to find, but Pascale and team arrived exactly on time. They were friendly and professional as they got to work examining my home. They were very thorough. I asked several questions as they went about their duties, and they were great about explaining the purpose of each test. Once they concluded, Brendan sat down with me and we went through their findings. It was very detailed. He showed me where my home was losing air, where I needed updates, some things that were old and needed to be replaced. Brendan was also quick to tell me what was doing well and what didn't need to be replaced, which I really liked. After the audit, Brendan emailed me a report that detailed what he had told me during our meeting. I found it very clear and I am eager to implement their recommendations to make my home more efficient. I highly recommend Energy Efficiency Experts!

Pascale, Richard, Brendan and Andee were all fantastic to work with. They were prompt, able to accommodate timely scheduling of appointment, very friendly, and completed the work in a very professional manner. They made reasonable recommendations and explained why they would improve energy efficiency, including a GoToMeeting with Pascale after the initial audit. We also really appreciate that they are taking care of the paperwork to get the PEPCO rebates. Total cost of work was $3,500, but we are expecting to get $1700 in rebates from PEPCO, and $500 from Takoma Park, plus a $250 tax credit. The $400 energy audit cost only $100 because of a PEPCO program.

Pascale and her team were very professional. We were able to schedule an energy audit with them within days of calling. Her team came to our house and were personable and knowledgeable. They answered all the questions I had related to the audit. Once they completed the audit, Pascale set up a conference call with my husband and myself to go over the work. She was thorough in explaining everything they did and why she suggested certain fixes be made. We were able to schedule the work within a week of the audit. The contractors that came were also very professional. They re-insulated much of our roof and crawl spaces. We were also eligible for a rebate from Pepco which we recently received. Should we need any other related work done to our house, we would definitely use EEE again.

Setting up the appointment went well and the technician arrived on time. I have never had an energy audit so didn't know what to expect. The technician spent about 3 hours and went over the main parts of his findings. The report that I received contained mostly boiler plate information. And the quote I received was a figure of $11,800 and five bullet points with a general description of the work. I sent the report to two other companies for their quotes, and they both remarked that the report was rather general and didn't include a lot of the information that they expected -- dimensions of the house, water heater and furnace readings (I had to ask that information in a follow-up email), Infrared camera analysis, and basic duct leakage assessment with pressure pan. I would suggest going with another company like Home Energy Medics and ecobeco, which are much more thorough in their work.

I could not be happier with my experience. Energy Efficiency Experts is a first-rate company. They surpassed my expectations by a wide margin. They visited my home twice. On both occasions, they arrived promptly at the agreed-upon time and immediately got to work. On the first visit, Pascale and her team performed a thorough energy assessment of my home which took about two hours. The cost of the audit was $400. Three hundred dollars was covered by PEPCO directly without me having to submit a rebate claim. At the end of the assessment, Pascale reviewed the results with me, provided me with a detailed written report, and pointed out areas where improvements could be made. She also pointed out what rebates were available through PEPCO for specific improvements. I found the assessment and recommendations to be very objective. At no time did I feel pressured to accept the recommended improvements. Before leaving on the first visit, Pascale's team installed two low-flow shower heads and approximately 10 CFL bulbs. The cost for these materials and the labor was fully-covered under a Maryland tax program designed to promote energy efficiency. I would not have known about it if Pascale hadn't educated me. On the second visit, they topped-off the cellulose insulation in the attic that had settled over a 10-year period and was no longer at the recommended R-value for the Mid-Atlantic Region. They took great care to protect my floors, carpets and furnishings. After the insulation was installed, they re-checked the overall insulation status of my house and cleaned up meticulously. Total cost for the insulation job was $3800.00. I paid $1700.00. The rest was covered by a PEPCO rebate. Pascale took care of submitting the rebate claim. In my opinion, Energy Efficiency Experts represents American small business at its finest: Skilled, attentive to detail, customer-oriented and honest. I would use their services again without hesitation.

At the appointed time, Pascale and Brendon arrived ready to work. They finished the energy audit in about 2 hours, checking air-flow in the house and crawling up into the attic, among other things. Pascale reviewed their findings with us, and discussed what they could do and also gave us the details on the Pepco rebates for the audit and for some of the work. We decided to go ahead with the work they prescribed and set a date. On that day, Brendon and his crew arrived on time with all the materials they needed. They worked steadily through the day, putting additional insulation in the attic, sealing the access hatches, and installing a zip cover for the whole-house fan. They showed us the work when they were finished, vacuumed all the spaces they had been working in, and explained all that they did and what to expect. Brendon was very professional about the job, and knew what he was doing. I highly recommend Energy Efficiency Experts for energy audits and the follow-up work.

Pascal and her team identified and fixed a problem I've had for years in my ground level floor. Every time it rained, the carpet in my family room would get damp from some sort of small leak from an unknown source. Energy Efficiency Experts succeeded after multiple experts in wet basements tried to evaluate the problem. My ground floor is now BONE DRY, and I have saved thousands in unnecessary foundation work. Pascal and Junior were on time, very professional and shared their whole process with me. This was a great experience.

Bottom Line: Energy Efficiency Experts is a highly competent company you can trust with your energy efficiency needs at some of the best pricing on the market today. Energy Efficiency Audit and Repair Estimate ($380): Scheduling the audit was a breeze via Angie's List. Pascale and her team arrived on time, conducted a thorough metrics-based energy audit by using a blower door test to determine house pressure, portable temperature sensor to measure cold/hot air leakage, and a visual inspection of the attic and all potential leakage areas. They provided an 11-page document with pictures and statistics fully demonstrating any problem areas, and Pascale sat down and explained everything in detail along with potential corrective measures. We truly appreciated her down-to-earth explanations and practical discussion regarding problems, repairs, and realistic cost savings and added comfort. Some things need to be done, while others can be done - you should know the difference. Corrective Actions ($15,020): Again scheduling the repairs was extremely easy. This time, Pascale sent out a foreman who headed up a team of experts to conduct all of the work over a two-day period. The foreman was exceptional at keeping me informed on the progress and any issues throughout the project. Everything was completed on time and in a professional manner and clean-up was excellent as well. Again, the foreman took me around and showed me the work that had been completed. Although it will take a year or so of collecting metrics and bills to see what cost savings were actually made, we have already noticed a difference in comfort when cooling the house with the same exact temperature settings as last year. Cost: Both the audit and the corrective actions were very competitive compared to other highly ranked companies on Angie's List.
Description of Work: Completed a thorough and metric-based energy efficiency audit followed by extensive sealing and insulation of attic, bay windows, garage, and exterior perimeter of house. Specifically: Attic and House Sealing Sealed the attic top plates and penetrations. Installed a cover over all recessed lights so they were insulation compatible and airtight. Insulated and air sealed the attic hatch. Replaced the failing trim on the attic hatch. Installed Rockwool around 3 flues so they were insulation compatible. Insulation Added R-38 Fiberglass. Installed baffles in the attic to direct the soffit or eave vent air over the insulation. Installed batts and cover with foam board for knee walls and/or sky lights. Installed a radiant barrier to retain insulation on knee walls and reflect heat in summer. Bay Window Removed and replaced plywood. Air sealed, blocked, and insulated between the joists going into the house. Installed 8" of open cell foam w/o an ignition barrier. Garage Drilled, filled, and plugged 2x8" cavity in the cantilever/garage ceiling. Whole House Sealing Performed whole house sealing to add caulk/sealant where it is old/non-existent. Continued until blower door test showed no/reasonable leakage.

I highly recommend Energy Efficiency Experts, and the owner, Pascale Maslin, for energy home audits, as well as the installation of baffles, insulation and air sealing. Energy Efficiency Experts is one of the few companies that is authorized by the DC Sustainable Energy Utility to perform this work, and homeowners can receive up to $1,600 in rebates through September 30, 2015. It is noteworthy that the companies with the lowest prices, some of whom get the highest ratings on Checkbook, are not authorized to perform this work, and if you hire them, you will not receive the rebates. It is important to note that if insulation is installed wrong, as explained below, considerable damage can be done to your home. This is one service where you want to hire a company that is competent, and not necessarily the cheapest in price. https://www.dcseu.com/for-my-home/audits-air-sealing-insulation/audits Pascale is clearly one of the very best companies in terms of her expertise and quality of work in the greater Washington DC area, and I highly recommend her services. Maslin performed an energy audit of my home, and her written report was very comprehensive and identified all of the issues in my 50 year old home. The key issue in the installation of blown-in insulation is the location of the vents in the soffits and eaves, and to prevent blown-in insulation from clogging those vents ? which will absolutely happen with blown-in insulation unless steps are taken to prevent it. The vents perform a critical function by allowing a free flow of air which lengthens the life of your roof, and prevents the formation of ice dams in the winter. In the vents are blocked, serious damage can occur, both from ice dams as well as mold in your attic. Equally important is air sealing of the top plates, walls, and lights that penetrate the attic. In the case of my home, if the job had been done wrong, it could have only been corrected by literally removing the roof, shingles and plywood in order to fix the problem. I was a bit concerned when I realized that Pascal would not personally supervise the installation of baffles to keep the vents clear, as well as the blowing in of the insulation. I quickly realized that there was no basis for my concern. The job was supervised by a member of Pascale?s staff, Brendan. Brendan was clearly well trained by Pascale, as he did an incredible job, and he was in the attic the entire time with the crew personally supervising the air sealing of the attic, as well as the installation of the baffles. My home has a very low roof, and almost no clearance within the attic. To reach the end of the attic and the soffits is an incredibly difficult job, with clearance of less than a foot. Brendan and the crew did a remarkable job in a very tight attic and in difficult circumstances. To reach those areas Brendan and the crew literally crawled through 50 year old insulation and dust, in a hot attic, on their stomachs. After the insulation was blown in, I installed a new roof and shingles. As part of that the roofer discovered that all of the plywood across the front of my house was rotten and had to be replaced, probably due to ice dams in the winter. The removal of the plywood allowed me to physically verify where the vents were, and verify that Pascale?s crew had properly installed the baffles and done a first rate job. Pascale even sent Brendan back to double check the insulation and baffles when the rotten plywood was removed, and that was clearly going above and beyond the call of duty. If you want the cheapest job possible, some of the companies that receive the highest number of ratings on Checkbook charge considerably less. One of them quoted a price of $150 for air sealing and $100 for installation of baffles. Those prices are simply absurd given how labor intensive this work is, especially if it is done correctly. The low prices reflect what would be the quality of their work, and I am not surprised that they are not authorized for rebates through the DC program. In light of the fact that air sealing and insulation is done only once, hire a competent company and do the job right the first time. That company is Energy Efficiency Experts and Pascale Maslin.
Description of Work: Comprehensive air sealing of all top plates, walls, and penetrations in the attic and basement. Installed baffles in attic and blew in insulation. Blew in dense packing of insulation in a garage ceiling to better insulate bedrooms above the garage.

Our experience with Energy Efficiency Experts (specifically, David) was excellent from start to finish. They spent several hours going over our 3 level home to perform the energy audit. David then returned a few weeks later to thoroughly review the results of our audit with us. We ultimately hired them to complete the improvements recommended in the energy audit. He worked with us on price and helped coordinate our refund from DC. When two of the thresholds on our basement doors didn't fit quite right, they returned later, free of charge, to replace them.

We were very pleased with the work that Pascal and her crew did and the benefits were immediately noticeable. We had definitely noticed some rooms were much colder than others in the winter and the upstairs was often sweltering in the summer even though my husband had installed a solar powered attic fan. EEE came out and ran an energy audit on time on the date decided upon. The audit was very thorough and conducted from a blower test and an extensive inspection of the house inside and out. From the inspection, we received a report with photos and graphs indicating our energy usage as compared to the ideal situation for a house our size, etc. Pascal (the owner) sat with us to go over the findings and we were shocked to learn from photos that not only was one of our crawl spaces done very haphazardly, but that the other area over another floor's ceiling had about only 2 inches of insulation. Pascal was very engaged in conveying the information in the reports to us and ensuring we understood the terminology and technology behind everything as well as the metrics on best practices. It was clear that she is passionate about what she does. Given the potential financial savings from future energy costs and given the generous Pepco subsidy (50% or $2000) toward the upgrades, we decided to move forward with the energy efficiency implementation strategies identified. EEE and their sub-contractors blew in a ton of insulation, sealed cracks with foam all around the perimeter of the house, and put in additional weather stripping. The team even found that there was a hole in the wall of our house underneath one of the soffits, and they patched it in addition to putting in the insulation planned for that area earlier. Since the work was done, we have noticed a huge decrease in the amount of time that the furnace stays on in the winter and the rooms upstairs are waaay more consistently heated. This is even more remarkable when one considers this winter is much colder than the last. We were further pleased when the last 2 month's gas bills came in indicating less usage than last year. These most recent months were the only in the last 18 months where our usage was lower than the year before, and clearly this is due to the energy improvements. We would hire Energy Efficiency Experts again in a heartbeat. Thank you to Pascal and her team.
Description of Work: Ran an energy audit on our house, replaced several incandescent bulbs with CFL ones and replaced shower head with low flow one, made energy improvements to house.

I left a message last weekend to try to set up a visit but no one called me back so I called back and was able to schedule a visit with Pasquale to come do an assessment of our home. Later that day she called back again and tried to schedule another appointment with me and I told her we had already booked the appointment. She asked when it was and said she didn't have it in her system so she asked for my information again. Today she called me again and just flat out asked if I had an appointment and it seemed as though she had no idea who she was speaking with. She said she was calling to set up my appointment and I told her again, we already have one. I asked her who she thought she was speaking with and she said Doug. I am a woman and my name is not Doug. I said again she already had me scheduled and asked me for when. I told her again and she said it wasn't in her system. At that point I said I had serious doubts about the quality of her work based on the fact that she couldn't manage to get my info properly recorded and saved. She said "Great, thanks " and hung up on me. I was very disappointed and think that this company needs a better customer management tool to keep track of clients. Guess Pasquale doesn't want my business. What a shame.
Description of Work: Unsuccessfully tried to book an appointment for me three times

Response from ENERGY EFFICIENCY EXPERTS
Hi, I am really sorry, the second time I called the phone had dowloaded a week's worth of deleted messages and added them to my day. I did not realize this until after I had made several calls to respond to them (the messages). Less than a week later it did it again. This time I was able to identify most of the messages that I had already responded to, the trouble with yours was that you had not left your name so I was unable to identify it, which was why I called the 3rd time. I did hang up after your response, sorry. I felt like I had just gotten caught with my hand in the cookie jar. I hope your audit went well with whoever you chose to do it, and once again I do apologize, I don't make a habit of being rude to anybody, least of all my clients. Pascale
