I contacted a contractor to remodel two bathrooms in my 1950s house, which presented some unique challenges due to the floors and walls not being perpendicular or flat. Bathroom 1: The hall shower had a drainage issue, leaving about two gallons of water standing on the floor. Additionally, the in-wall valve made noise when the shower was in use. This was a 36" x 36" corner shower that needed significant work. The team expertly tore out the old shower and addressed the plumbing issues. They added extra framing to accommodate the new tile, replaced the rough-in valve, and upgraded some of the existing PEX piping to support the new shower system. They restructured the shower floor to ensure proper drainage and waterproofed the backing and floor with the appropriate membranes. Laying the tile to achieve an even and straight look in an 80-year-old home was a real challenge, but they handled it with skill. Bathroom 2: The master tub/shower combo had a built-in recirculation system that constantly produced mold—definitely not something you want in your bathwater! Despite numerous cleanings, the problem persisted. The team replaced the tub, old tile, and installed a new rough-in valve for the shower. The old floors posed a challenge, but they made it work, ensuring the tub was stationary and installed correctly. They beautifully installed subway tile on three walls of the tub, along with new plumbing using PEX and Sharkbite compression fittings. I wanted to take on the wall painting myself, as I have a lot of experience with drywall and fixing blemishes. Overall, the work was excellent. The crew overcame the challenges of the non-flat, non-perpendicular walls to ensure the tile lines were consistent throughout. We navigated the project together, and they even added a bathroom vent in the master bath for proper humidity control. Even after months of use, it’s clear that they care about the appearance and performance of their work. They also installed two bathroom vanities, complete with sinks, cabinets, and faucets in both bathrooms. I’m now enjoying my new showers, which are wonderfully quiet—no more loud noises while showering! The drainage is excellent, without any need to squeegee the floor afterward. Plus, they look absolutely fantastic, and the vanities are both functional and stylish!
